    Dean, here's two easy checks to see if it has destroyed a big end without taking it apart - 1) remove all spark plugs - put a long tipped screwdriver onto the piston crown wind engine by hand so piston passes TDC and is just descending - now lean on the screwdriver - if the big end is shot you will get a thunk and feel the piston drop at same time. 2) inset bore scope - if the big end has gone it's likely the piston would have hit the head and the carbon line on the front and rear of the crown will bare witness with a visible line that mirrors the squish margins of the head

  • @craigvirgin8461
    @craigvirgin8461 8 місяців тому +25

    Dean. Drop the oil and get the filter off and cut it open to check for sparkles. To me, that's a bearing at one end or the other of a rod. I think the sporadic spraying of the oil from the lifters is a symptom of a bigger failure, not the failure itself. And as others have rightly pointed out, tuck your bloody drawstrings away!

    To be 100% sure it’s not the chain, there are specs for the length and VCDS can measure the angles of the cams, can always check those specs to completely negate the chain as a possibility

  • @Redshift-
    @Redshift- 8 місяців тому +32

    Listen to the speed of the knock relative to RPM - That gives you best clue ;)
    As the noise gets worse as the oil thins it's pretty safe to say It's run a Big End Bearing - A gentle drive down the road and the noise will vary on and off gentle load with the most noise when " floating" between on/off light load as the bearing clearences are closed due to cylinder Pressure/Vacuum on the Rods.
    The Owner cooked the oil but good Main Stealer still sold him a service 🤣 Would say he killed it what that Oil pressure fault was logged😉

  • @VOLKZZORN
    @VOLKZZORN 8 місяців тому +6

    Yes, I know the noise. Two cracked hydraulic tappets looked normal on ours, but when pulled they flew apart so no oil arrived and ran dry which caused this noise! But as some have already said, the pump is mechanical, unfortunately I don't know if that's the case then it ticks like that even if it's broken!

  • @jedi-mic
    @jedi-mic 8 місяців тому +7

    Before you do the tappets check their fuel pump it's mechanical you can get that tappet noise from a fuel pump, I remember the Old polo used to make an awful noise like that it could be a lifter on the fuel pump or something's not right with it. And I would check the oil filter so if it is the correct type and the return valve is working right and make sure you've got the correct oil where you're pointing out the loudest part of the noise is where the fuel pump is so my guess is the fuel pump or the cam to it

    • @apoco_lips9957

    Maybe try unplugging 1 coil pack at a time and run it, plug back in if no change and move to the next, see if it changes tone or clears, with no detonation may rule out piston slap / bottom end, feel like I've seen this before, same noise, ended up being shells gone, also partially blocked the strainer.

    If no sparkles because new oil & filter done defo replace Cam roller bearings & tappers with fuel pump shim, plus if that’s run dry … then complete an oil flush through so galleys are cleared .. new oil & filter then run a manual oil pressure check at idle then 4to 5k to see pressure values .

    Read a few comments of those saying rod knock/little end. Sounds too slow for that. I took a snipet and slowed it down, counted about 7 or 8 ish taps per second of footage. 420-480 or so taps a minute thats half engine speed at idle, so definately a top end noise. Id hazard a punt at a cracked or siezed tappet

  • @vincentking5122

    Sounds like either a worn gudgeon pin or could possibly be a bent con rod,maybe it’s sucked up some water? Try disconnecting individual coils with the engine running and see if the noise goes away or gets quieter as if it was the hydraulic followers it would make no difference to the noise with the coil pack disconnected 👍🏻

  • @projecteuroau
    @projecteuroau 7 місяців тому

    Actually sounds like it does have a little chain rattle on start for a few seconds. You can hear it on your initial start and when you started it again in the shop once it was put back together. I don't think it is your main issue however, it sounds like rod knock or a bearing issue. I'd drain the fluid, check for sparkles and then check the oil filter for shavings before spending any more on the lifters.

    Before you sink £300 into new tappets, you could move the ones you suspect are at fault to a different cylinder and see if the noise moves. Cheaper, but more labour it turns out you’re right as you’d have to strip and rebuild twice. I agree with others though, sounds too heavy a knock for tappets (via an iphone speaker atleast!)

  • @GarageItYourself
    @GarageItYourself 8 місяців тому +1

    The fact that the oil only squirted from a few of the lifters would say to me that there's either buggered lifters or an overall lack of oil pressure. Now multiple lifters may have failed due to low pressure but as there was a recorded low oil pressure code I'm thinking the pressure releif valve is being problematic. Thick oil on start up makes things quieter and then gets noisy as oil becomes thinner hence reducing pressure. Anyhoo, that's my thoughts.

    Wow a lot of replies here dean. So, I doubt you'll see this. First off as others have said I'd drop oil and look at oil and filter first!!!
    As you've got the oil filter housing adaptor, you could try that. I doubt it will solve it. But It wouldn't cost you a penny and not the same scale as the tappets. The valves in the assembly if anything like the ea888gen3 bracket are 1. oil cool jet control valve and 2. oil pressure regulation valve for hi / lo pressure. I think the workshop manual was referring to the spring loaded antidrain valve inside the oil filter cap? Anyways, good luck. I haven't worked on the 5cyl RS3 engine btw. Thanks for the vids.

    I'm really enjoying your videos! You mentioned the oil level was overfilled by 200 mil. That could happen if the dealership overfilled it, an injector was leaking, or the car was driven into water deep enough to get sucked in the intake and hydrolocked the engine. The injectors don't seem to be leaking now, though one could have been replaced. Seeing the owner just wanted to dump it, I'd suspect the latter.

    These engines are well known for having timing chain noise issues relating to the VVT pulleys, my TTRS has made some similar noises in the past to then not make them again at random intervals on warm starts. Pretty sure the The Turbo Unit made an article on their facebook page pointing out why these cam/VVT sprockets fail. So potentially maybe one of yours isnt getting oil pressure at all creating a rattle. I think there is also a piece of gauze somewhere in the oil channel feed to these VVT pulleys that can also get blocked up with debris stopping it from building oil pressure
    Ill bet audi over filled the engine with oil to see if it helped quiet down the noise
    im curious to see what you find.
    Good luck! 😁

Just seams very strange to have a problem, After a service from Main Dealer.. I'd put money on a partially blocked Oil pump strainer.. Andy ..

    High pressure fuel pump? works much the same as rockers eg shouldn’t have any clearance on cam, so if you have a weak pump pushrod pressure it would sound the same as tappet failure.

    After watching the full video, you can hear why the previous owner dropped it like a hot potato lol, can only imagine how it sounded at speed. He obviously thought the engine was toasted. Looking forward to seeing what it takes to fix.👍

    this for sure has low oil pressure and the first nock you did hear i would say was a bottom end nock with it being sat and oil has run back this is my best guess

    I had a similar noise on cam follower and high pressure fuel pump

    Don't go firing the parts cannon at it! Take the sump off and look at the oil and the end bearing on the side of the engine where it is most noisy.

    Possible fuel pump failure, they make a horrible noise when they fail and do like to fail aswell, would definitely be checking that first 👍

    Is it possible
    If they put to much oil in at the service and it’s started after the service . Maybe Oil level could be so high it catching the crank and been bubbled up so the oil pump can’t move it . Be Worth draining oil to correct level
    To rule it out .

    That noise was worse after the first start up might be nice cheap fix if it is what you think it is 👍🏽👍🏽

    Well the frequency at tick over is 6hz ish so if tick over is 750ish then its ticking at half rpm. Obviously if it was ticking over at 1500 then it a quarter rpm

    I had this tapping on my seat , it was starvation of oil not getting to the top the cause was debris in the oil pick up pipe in the sump I took it of cleaned the mesh on the pick up did an oil engine flush did oil change and it was sweet .

      Had a similar thing with an old ford cvh, it was sound when cold but after 4 or so miles it would miss fire and the tappets would rattle.

    wouldn't it be worth pulling the oil filter and check to see if you have any metal particles in first that would give you a good indication what is going on with it if it is major it might show sigh's of glitter in the oil too

    Big end worn bearing lets the piston travel more and touches the cylinder head hens the top end noise. Drop da sump I say🤔

    Dude check your piston heights I had exactly the same on my scooby and it was a slightly bent rod. Drove lovely just sounded like that. Same thing sounded like it was from top end…

    Personally I’d drop the oil filter and check it for particles before running it. Compression test it….

    Great video
    Look at checking the oil pick up in the sump as well as historical oil pressure fault might be suggesting that's blocked up/restricted
    Also what scan tool do you use
    Keep up the good work

    Why dont you check with a bore scope if a piston is not hitting something to be sure? Love your channel!
