SWV means sisters with voices! 😊😊
And they prove it every time
I mean every single time 🎉🎉
Never knew that
They used to be called T LC.
@@kimakotrotman6860 hate liars
Fun Facts: 1) The male background singer who was featured is the lead singer's son. 2) The one on the right is the wife of former NFL player Eddie George.
Facts
Taj of SWV was also a superstar on CBS SURVIVOR
Her son is literally the male version of her…but he’s gay so they’re basically the same person lol it’s so funny
Also, the group's initial name was TLC (Taj, Lee-Lee, Coko), but they had to change it once the group we know as TLC came out first.
Weak is a generational classic. Love this song!
Never gets old. ❤
@@quickpstuts412never
Coko is one the best vocalists of the 90s. She’s been cited by many singers (Jasmine Sullivan, Keyshia Cole to name a few) as one of their vocal influences. SWV was part of the soundtrack to my early 20s.
Great Reaction Gentlemen; So Glad to see You Reacting to more of S.W.V.🔥🔥🔥
90's? She's one of the best of all time
Her gospel album is amazing
Coko is one of the best vocalists TODAY
@@0xTRellyx0 PERIOD
The line "keep running" is a sample of the Gap Band's 'Yearning For Your Love'.
Exactly 👍🏾!
That song is fantastic!! For those who don't know, that song was also sampled by Nas on "Life's a Bitch".
"You can't keep running in and out of my life," being the full sentiment of that Gap Band song. ❤
Would be a great group to review
"It's like that y'all" is a common Hip Hop phrase that goes back to the early 70s.
Exactly!
Yes! Correct! Sorry, Kai....Dad was right this time lol. 😊It's used as a general hip hop expression, especially back in the 80's and 90's. "It's like that and that's the way it is!"
Ahhhhh, they so clueless! Come on, y'all, let's revive having community culture, so we have vibes like this again
Im not going to be the only one to say this, but the studio version of "Weak" needs its on reaction. Its literally top 10 all time r&b song from a girl group.
Coko is the lead female voice on the song by Will Smith "Men In Black"
I did not know that
Yep
SWV and En Vogue are probably the two best girl groups EVER. Listen to their entire first 2 albums though, they harmonize like butter. Dad knows!!!!
What type of drugs you on the best girl group ever is xscape
If Xscape was the best the sales and music would have been better. Clearly you don’t know your history
@@AntHen-qg5cq😂
@@double0068Now you know goodt and well that sales have absolutely nothing to do with the quality and talent of an artist. How Beyonce has more Grammys than Rachelle Ferrell is an abomination… and this is coming from a Beyonce fan. People get it wrong all the time. My metrics of a great group, male or female, are harmonies and the ablility of EVERY SINGER IN THE GROUP TO TAKE THE LEAD AND KILL THE GAME. With my definition, that would be no one better than En Vogue.
Dad's memory is impeccable! How he always remembers everyone he's listened to as well as random facts he's learned about the artist/genre is quite amazing. I'm probably half his age and could only dream of having a memory that sharp!
Coco's voice is soooo strong and steady...she is top tier
@@tslee3008 Coko
One Correction for you: SWV did not start to get “big” in the early 90s. They came out in the early 90s and had instant success!
Yep by the time the second single came out the billboard charts couldn't keep their songs out of the Top 10 ❤
Truth!
@@eizyaws 💯
They definitely ruled Summertime in the 90s. I couldn't escape hearing "Weak". Great times!
Also June was Black Music Month...and Tiny Desk series did not disappoint ❤
They sure didn't!
Pleeease have dad listen to:
Tamia - Stranger in my house
Debora Cox - How did you get here
Two vocal power houses. I think he’d love them!
You have suggested two great singers, hope they listen to that.
Id only add Debora Cox We cant be friends

You Put a Move on My Heart by Tamia is golden
I wonder if they are already familiar with them since both of them are Canadian too but they def should react their music
Have you guys listened to Mint Condition “Swingin’” or “Pretty Brown Eyes” yet?
They did pretty brown eyes on Patron. Its a weekly series called people's choice.
U Send Me Swingin is one of my favourite songs of all time!

@@itsi3187❤❤❤ I totally agree, super underrated💯
Now that you've heard "Rain" and liked it, you all should listen to the album version. It's even better.
It's an R&B classic. A beautiful, perfect masterpiece.
I totally agree 💯💯
Y’all saying Coco voice is small OMG…..she is one of the strongest best Vocals in the business
Clearly it was the mix, not her voice - the music was just a bit too loud relative to her voice. But thoroughly enjoyed it all the same. (dad)
@@frontroomyou gotta hear more of her music to understand she has a really full voice listen to her gospel songs
Her voice is high and bright, but also extremely powerful. Tori Kelly has that quality too. When the voice isn't weighty, some read that as smaller.
Please 🙏🏾🙏🏾 do a reaction video to SWV singing "If only you knew" live version
They were nominated for a Grammy for that song. Coko's displays super powerful vocal abilities 🔥🔥🔥
ESSENCE AWARDS SWV 2024❤❤
Coko (the lead, in the middle) is actually one of the best vocalists to EVER do it. After 30 or more years she has kept her voice in pristine condition. She has a song called "Sunshine" she released when they took a break from the group that always makes me emotional, it's so beautiful. You should check it out
Love tht song
The “The tour that no one thought would happen” is speaking about the XScape vs SWV tension. This tour was supposed to happen years ago and they even started a reality show with the two groups as part of the promotion. There was a lot of tension and things went off the rails. That’s why that statement was so funny to the band and the crowd. SWV did split for a while but I believe it was more about different directions in life and starting families ands such. They’ve never had messy drama like XScape did. That group is still going through turmoil as we speak lol
The “Keep running” break is homage to the song they sampled from The Gap Band, Yearning For Your Love.
When SWV hit the scene in 1992 with Weak, people went crazy! They're voices are great together. I've seen them in concert many times and they sound just like the records. BTW, Coco's vocals are strong. Reminds you of Patti LaBelle.
Not sure if anyone already commented this but SWV stands for “Sistas With Voices”. Just explaining the that part being that you guys were delighted by them sing that at the end of “Weak (In the Knees)”
You guys need to review more SWV and ALL the artist they announced they're going on tour with
@15:20 There was a reality show a year or 2 ago with SWV & Xscape attempting to put together a show and possible tour. It was chaos. Very entertaining but chaotic. lol That’s why Lele said that.
They got it together though!! I saw them on Sunday 😊

Sisters With Voices (SWV)
That’s her son singing with her …..Always on my mind
“It’s like that y’all” is an ol school hip hop reference to a comment chant during the very beginning of hip hop in the late 70’s.
The phrase "keep Running" is a sample from the Gap Band's song entitled "yearning for your love" from 1981.
32:57 Common didn't start "It's like that y'all" get out of here son 😂. That phrase has been since the origins of hip-hop.
Crazy to think Common of all people started a phrase such as that. Lol. I mean I like Common but...what??
Wow Guys!, this is so Awseome. Im so proud of the both of U going down memory lane w/Us. These are our hidden treasures from the 90's. Thank U4 always showing appreciation to our ol' skool memories 🥰
A new world of music for the two of us! Thanks for watching. (dad)
SWV's studio version of "I'm So Into You" has a New Jack Swing sound. It's an up tempo fusion of R&B and Hip Hop developed in the 90's. Here are some examples of songs with a New Jack Swing sound: Bobby Brown- Every Little Step, Bell Biv Devoe- Poison, Boyz II Men- Motown Philly, Janet Jackson- Alright.
Coko ( lead singer) is not using her full voice and I think that's because of the space of Tiny Desk. Because she is a powerhouse vocalist!
Coko was the female vocal on the will smith track Men In Black for the film... Errr, Men In Black. Her voice is big. But that film is so old do you even know that song 😬 👵🏾 Love me some SWV.
Kai and Dad are so sweetly innocent not realising what the song Rain is about.... lol....
I can see the Love on your Sons face... He Loves Coko.... I recognize that face.. I got the same face 😂😂😂
Coco / SWV is THE SOUND IF 90s Rand B! They are also 90s style icons! Their harmonies changed the standard
The interlude when they started singing "Keep running" is from Yearning for Your Love by the GAP Band. They are a classic R&B group from Tulsa Oklahoma. That "Keep running. Keep on running" part repeats on the song at the end. It jams! SWV did great!!! Glad you watched and enjoyed 🙂
On "You're the One for Me", they realize that it was a crazy song. That's why she said "sometimes we got it right, sometimes we got it wrong." They're all saved now lol
I've just understood the lyrics of that song. I was a French teacher and didn't"t have a clue of what they were saying. When I heard it lately I was shocked but found them funny 🤣
I think the guys would've REALLY been messed up if they had sung the second verse 😂
😂😂😂
SWV was and still is one of my favorite girl groups. Coko is the lead singer (in the middle w/ blonde short cut). Her son J. Clemmons is singing background vocals which is super cool! The Human Nature version of Right Here was remixed from Michael Jackson’s song. You guys should do En Vogue & Xscape next if you havent already. I enjoy hearing your collective take and watching Dad’s reaction. Also SWV (Sisters with Voices) pre-dates Common on the music scene…”its like that ya’ll…”was a common phrase in the 90s.
Oooh, i suggested Xscape but EvVogue was a great suggestion !
It’s especially sweet considering he wasn’t even born when the song originally came out. He’s got such a beautiful voice though, and got in great.
You guys should check out Tank and the Bangas Tiny Desk session. I KNOW you'll both enjoy it. To me, it's like a new genre of music
Thanks for this, I am going to watch this myself.
One of the absolute best I’ve seen.
That one is Magicalllll!!! 🤩🤩💫💫💫 and also feels so cathartic 👌🏾👌🏾
I love Tank and the Bangas tiny desk, my grandson (who is 4) always asks to watch it😊❤
Check out the recent Tiny Desk featuring Chaka Khan.
Yes! This!
Yesss..
And the Hadestown cast
So good!!
I just finished watching!! The algorithms was doing their job!
90’s R&B forever!
Fun fact: Taj (right of Coko) was on Survivor: Tocantins (18th season)!
SWV murdered this, and the band buried it! Damn 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
weak, rain and right here (human nature) are my all time 3 favorite SWV songs
Those are my fav too and in that order.
I think you all might enjoy SWV’s third album, “Release Some Tension”. There are a lot of hits and deep cuts on that album that blend their signature sound (all 90s r&b supefans can always tell an SWV song by Coko’s voice alone) and hip hop acts of the time. The group wasn’t a huge fan of this album, but it was their last one before they broke up for almost 2 decades.
Also, Coko sang the hook on Will Smith’s Men in Black soundtrack title song. The acoustics in the room didn’t do her voice justice, she’s one of, if not the strongest sopranos in R&B. I highly suggest listening to SWV’s cover of Patti LaBelle’s “If Only You Knew.” It’ll blow you away ❤️
Xscape is another girl group from the 90s. They started in high school in Atlanta. (I will leave some song suggestions below.) The 2 groups (Xscape & SWV) had a reality show last year when they went on tour together for the first time. There was a lot of drama (particularly over which group would headline the show). I think they were able to compromise this year (which is why LeeLee made the comment about the tour nobody thought would happen.) Xscape ultimately lost one of its original members (one of the 2 blood sisters I the group) during the taping of the reality show, as well.
Xscape Songs I Suggest:
Who Can I Run To
Understanding
Tonight
My Little Secret
Just Kickin It (their first hit & probably most popular song)
I went to their show last month....it was amazing!!! They are still on tour!! SWV looked and sounded fabulous 👌🏾. My favorite 90s girl group...besides Envogue
They need to react to some En Vogue music
The algorithm worked for you guys today! I’m subbed to the channel and SWV is my fave group! They have been together (separated briefly) but have pretty much always toured because of their catalogue. They’ve had like 3 or 4 songs go viral that ‘TikTok’ has no clue (The Rain song, Kanye used in Sunday Service for ex). Also, “It’s Like That” was like a hype thing from the 80s. I think it dates back to Run D-M-C. - Check out SWV’s song “Use Your Heart”. They were some of the first people to work with a super young Pharrell.
They also mentored a young Destiny's Child that produced Beyoncé
@@PheLaReux IKR! They used to follow them around when they toured. 😂 - Brandy also said Coko was her goal vocal on the first album. They got her to record the album version of “Broken-hearted” in a couple of takes by saying “If YOU wanna be like Coko, you better SANG!” 🤣 She recorded it in like 20 minutes and went to Six Flags.
Keep running comes from the Gap Band song which is sampled in you’re always on my mind.
New Jack Swing was pretty popular around the mid 80s/ early 90s where RnB artists would sing over more upbeat dance/hiphop production. A few of my favorite tracks from that era
Bobby Brown - Don't be cruel
Guy - Groove me
Hi-five - I like the way
Boys II Men - Motown Philly
Keith Sweat - Something just ain't right
AMAZING Tiny Desk! Heard them when it first came out but hearing them again reminds me of their why they're called SISTERS WITH VOICES (SWV). These renditions were a wonderful jazzed up version of the originals. Great pick you'll -- you'll need to listen to the originals.
The one that sang the solo was Coko son
Teena Marie is one of my favorite singers of all time. Please dad and Kai do a listen to her song Deja Vu (I’ve been here before). One of the most lyrically beautiful songs ever. If that doesn’t bring dad to tears I don’t know what will.
One of my favorites.
100% agree
Portuguese Lover is another slept-on Lady T song.
The version of Anything (last song) had Wu Tang Clan on it. It’s a classic. “It’s like that y’all” is from the 80s and is still said in the hip hop genre. Now y’all should listen to SWV’s albums. And Coko’s voice is very strong which you will hear on their albums. ☺️ SWV started in 1990 in NY and to add to what others have said about the members, Coko was in a relationship with Butterfly from Digable Planets and they have a son together who was singing the male lead in this performance.
New Jack Swing was ushered in by Teddy Riley with his group Guy, Bobby Brown, TLC, BBD, Wrecks N Effect to name a few.
Great summation
They were singing a part of “Yearning for your Love” by Gap Band
Father very cool loving his reaction and y’all relationship of bonding 😊❤
There was a TV series of Xscape getting back together, and having competitive drama with SWV. I'm a huge fan of both of these groups and grew up listening to them. Xscape has 4 individual singers and so their performances are different. I highly recommend a listen and watching their live performances on BET. Loved how your pops closed his eyes for track "Rain" and was vibing 🫶🫶🫶
I went to the show a few hours ago. It was LeeLee's(red hair) 51st bday. They are all in their 50s now
Dad's expression when Coko starts on "On My Mind" is me every time she opens her mouth lol
Coco voice is not small she is in a small space and btw that woman's voice can beat the blocks of a whole team of women combined 😊
😂😂😂 and did on Run to the Arms 😂
I don't think that they were being insulting. I think that they meant that maybe her voice isn't quite as full as someone like Aretha Franklin
or Whitney Houston. Here her voice is a little lighter, but those of us who have seen her in a full concert setting knows she's a
vocal beast.
Her voice is really small, she's a light soprano, her tone is bright and light weight but she can sing those notes well. An example of big voice is Whitney Houston.
@@eleeveeayees3425 No no, her voice isn't small. Go listen to Coko sing "If Only You Knew".... That's all 👋🏾
@@eizyaws Having a small voice doesn't always mean you cannot project the high notes or you lack volume, she's a light soprano which is characterized by bright, light weight, warm and youthful tone. Smaller voices have more agility compared to big voices which have heavier and darker tone. Smaller in size doesn't necessarily mean you lack volume output, it depends on your technique.
I highly suggest watching and listening to this group SWV’s original recorded videos Weak, Rain, Use your heart ❤️
Some hits by the acts that they’ll be touring with Xscape: Just kicking it, Who can I run to, Do you want to Total: Kissing you, What about us 702: Get it together, Steelo Mya: My love is like, Wo, It’s all about me, Take me there
Also, "It's Like That Y'all" was first recorded by LL Cool J (and Run DMC). It's a Def Jam thing.
Run-DMC on Here We Go. 1984. They weren't on Def Jam but Profile. I'm sure there was someone before them, not recorded..
It's a NYC thing
I love to see Jaye and his mom Coko sing together! They are fabulous! SWV is my favorite girl group from the 90s!
Scarface NPR is really good! Add that to your list
We did the Scarface NPR already, and yes, it was amazing. (dad)
The guy staring is me when I saw them live. Like Thanksgiving dinner.
Y'all might be the only Humans on earth that don't appreciate the Human Nature Remix of Right Here !! It's a certified classic
Keep running… taken from another song. Gap Band (Charlie Wilson lead singer). You can’t keep running in and out of my life. They took that part of the song and the beat/music from his song
You'll have to go down the rabbit hole of SWV. You won't be disappointed.
Yes!!! Swv was lit
Dads right! It’s the mics like I wish they would’ve turnt them up
If you want to dive into New Jack Swing, research Teddy Riley. He introduced the sound with various artists that he produced. Also, check the soundtrack to the movie " New Jack City."
Gen X here: Omg. SWV were one of my favorites in high school. Awesome video.
Get their album, you won't be disappointed. R&B CLASSIC PERIOD! 🎉❤💛💚
I agree that the band was too loud and they needed the vocals to be louder.
Please listen to the track version of
I’m so into you
Weak
Rain on me (absolutely beautiful track)
The lyrics and melody during “keep running” is homage to The Gap Band ft Charlie Wilson song ‘Yearning For Your Love’.
Take a listen 😊
FYI Kai and dad, SWV= Sistas With Voices!
This was a good and soulful one and I’d also like to see what your dad thinks of Chaka Khan’s Tiny Desk❤
So y’all have to react to some Xscape as well. Basically Xscape and SWV had a tour planned last year but it didn’t work out because Xscape kind of had an ego problem and felt like they should’ve headlined and not Co-Headlined. So that was a whole issue. Even though most of us felt like SWV is the bigger group in comparison to Xscape but Xscape has some members that are on TV so they feel like they’re the bigger group. It was a mess but now they’ve gotten it together for this tour🩵🩵
They are on tour now
I think the album cover with 3 ppl laying in the cobweb is Millie Jackson. Btw SWV = Sisters With Voices.
You saved me having g to write this comment lol. Millie Jackson Caught Up. Classic album
That’s Coko son Jayye Michael
You guys have to listen to Mint Condition. One of the best 90s R&B bands that played live instruments. The lead singer Stokely has a great voice, he always felt like the male version of Coco to me.
The phrase , " It's Like Dat Ya'll began when hip-hop began..Common is doing what everybody else has done, sampled.
The "keep running" lyric from "Always on My Mind" is taken from The Gap Band's "Yearning For Your Love" which was released in 1980 and is an R&B classic.
You guys need to do them singing if only you knew by Patti LaBelle...the lead singer gives octaves and range for days in that song...every single time she sings it
To me, the music was louder than the mics. Coco’s voice isn’t small at all. It was just drowned out. So were the backgrounds.
13:22 You’re Always On My Mind sampled Gap Band’s Yearning For Your Love. So when they’re singing “keep running” they’re singing the hook from the original song.
SWV still going strongggg! please react to Chloe & Halle tiny desk live. it's so amazingggg. the vocals, harmonies, lyrics, live band, etc💓 10000/10 would recommend🥰
Dad, super producer Teddy Riley is the creator of the New Jack Swing genre from the 90s. It's a fusion of R&B and Hip Hop...my favorite era of music. Blackstreet is a group where you can hear some music from that time period. Check out Don't Leave Me, Before I Let You Go and Never Gonna Let You Go if you're interested in the sound of New Jack Swing music.
I think what probably felt "retro" and familiar about "Weak" was the churchy chords and harmonies.
Now y'all have to react to the groups and artists mentioned going on tour with them haha
I miss the 90's R&B music.
Xscape and SWV had a reality show leading up to them doing a few shows together. They had a lot of differences, especially about headlining and closing, so no one thought the joint tour would happen. So glad it did because I enjoyed it immensely
That Common song is "I used to love her" and it sparked a small beef with ice cube
Man I love this channel 🙂
Its Like That Ya'll- PreDates Common.... I remember hearing Run DmCs song Its Like That Yall... but Im sure it probably started before then ...
They are one of a few r&b girl groups of the 90s they was really big in the r&b side of the billboards if you know you know
Great listen! I would like to recommend Tina Marie. She has a track with Rick James called "Fire and Desire" its definitely worth a listen, There's also "Deja Vu" and "Portuguese Love" which are also outstanding.
Don't forget the classic Square Biz
Love u guys for this 💕 Please react to the originals of their Tiny desk songs, coko was a vocal powerhouse back in their prime !
She still has it
