Sahlene wasn't even supposed to sing "Runaway" originally, the singer who was supposed to sing it withdrew, shortly before the contest in Estonia. The composers were unsuccessful finding an Estonian singer for the song, but somehow they got hold of Sahlene who was able to jump on a plane to Tallin on short notice. She even brought her brother with her, he's playing the guitar in the background. It wasn't her first time on Eurovision, she was one of the backing vocalists when Charlotte Perelli won in 1999 with "Take Me to Your Heaven". Sahlene will be back in Esti Laul in 2025.
How you're talking about Zlata reminds me of how I experienced Kate Miller-Heidke's "Zero Gravity" in 2019 - it was hitting me on so many levels, regarding the journey that I was on. In many ways also regarding my journey as an artist. I felt very seen by the latter entry. It induced me with incredible joy, and oh wow, I just realised the two songs are called "Gravity" and "Zero Gravity" (and I have always loved them both - they were my personal favourites of their respective year).
Wow - that's the first time I ever clapped eyes and ears on the Latvia 2000 song (went and watched it just now) 🤯 It's probably the most unique delivery I've ever seen/heard in Eurovision ... it's utterly charming!! This is why I love these recaps ... I'm discovering stuff I missed out on. Keep going, please!
if you are wanting to follow an interesting rabbit hole brainstorm is quiet literally music royalty in Latvia, so they send their biggest stars to eurovision the year they debut (I think). My best friend grew up to their music in Latvian and it's really awesome!
I wasn’t following Eurovision back in 2000, but I definitely remember this song and didn’t know it competed! I guess it was played quite a lot on radio and tv in Finland back then, and I really liked it in my high school years.
Hi Gabe, just a quick note - Arash actually lives in Sweden too. So you could kinda call him a Swedish producer as well lol. He deserves a little more credit here because he's written a lot of bangers that have become staples at Persian parties! I heard Always frequently as a kid and was shocked to hear it was actually a Eurovision song :)
Wow your words on Gravity and your beautiful love and admiration for Eurovision is such an eloquent summary of my feelings too. Beautifully put. I just love how we are out here and that it really resonates with us to a rudimentary level that I feel it so intensely and are drawn to those who feel the same way. I'm a late bloomer tuning in 2017 but it changed my life and gives me purpose and I don't have your words but I felt every word of that dude
Gabe, thank you for talking about the beautiful sentimental feeling you have about Gravity! It has inspired me to have a nostalgic look back and seriously think about how other entries have had a life-changing impact on me. Also, thank you as always for the excellent videos!
10:40 the reason why Sahlene got to sing "Runaway" for Estonia at Eurovision 2002 was because it was originally planned to be performed by estonian entrant fo Eurovision 2000 Ines, but she withdrew before the estonian national final at 2002
Thank you, Gabe! I absolutely love your enthusiasm. You are also very funny and precise with your expressions. I love how you tell your honest opinions without sensational clickbaitings. I just wish that you could keep the texts on the screen a little bit longer. Now I have to pause and scroll back all the time because I´m not reading fast enough.
2007 Serebro. You call them Russian music royalty and a powerhouse.. well, they were created specifically for the ESC 2007 contest. Song #1 is literally the first song written for them. Their legacy was created afterwards, this song was their foundation
As a Russian who was 4 in 2007, Serebro's song fell into the adulthood that we were promised category for me, it just aligned so well with the glamourous aesthetic of this era and my mom's motorola that I was listening this song from, it had that cool older sister in 00's vibe
The Joy and enthusiasm which shines through on every one of your videos (excepting the angry ones lol) was justly notched up in your explanation of your love for Gravity. I agree there are some Eurovision songs which hit you and you cannot explain to others just why a particular song means so much to you. I have found each year there is a song that just connects with me emotionally and is why I love this wonderful silly music competition which we all love. Long may you get emotional about entries. Looking forward to your input on the Montenegro selection (if you're doing one that is). Much Love and so glad I found this channel.
It was so sweet seeing you getting all emotional. 😊 I know how you feel in regards to the pure joy of your country getting to host Eurovision. I’m going through this now because I’m Swiss. For years I’ve been hoping for my country to finally win again after such a long time and being able to witness it. This year this dream came true and now I get to see Switzerland host the contest. 🥹 P.S. I also really love Gravity and I feel the same pure joy when listening to this song.
The way you talk about Gravity and other songs from 2013 is the same way I talk about 2003. That was my first year of properly watching the contest and being really grabbed by it. Given that I am a dash older and was there during the 2000s, I think I’m always going to view that era much kinder than you do, for me something that has aged badly for you, just feels nostalgic - and I will always be super into a key change! That being said, really enjoying your content! I was fan media myself between 2009 and 2015 and then member of one of the delegations between 2016 and 2023 and decided to step away this year, and its content like yours that is re-energising my love of the contest 😁

@@theincomparablemess As an spaniard myself, from what I remember she didn't have that many after winning Benidorm Fest. She only got like 4% of the televote (whereas Rigoberta got 18% and Tanxungeiras got 70%), and even some politicians were attacking her, not to talk about the media, which tried to tank her. When she became a fan favourite to win, everything changed, but it was hard being a fan of hers at the beggining.
@adriann1829 I do remember all of that. And don't get me started about that Tanxugueiras televote. Chanel was the best option for Spain that year and I'm so proud of her. She kept working hard, delivered one of the best performances of all time and "shut some mouths".

I had completely forgotten unicorn beat due vite in 2023 and it took med 30 minuets into the video to realize it’s not here. And then I got just as mad as I was in 2023 all over again.
Romania 2005 was so epic, I mistook it for the interval act. A vibrant stage-filling setpiece which meshed so well with the song in terms of choreo and percussion. Spotless vocals which are hard to achieve at that tempo. Bonus points for the mix of modern with folk. It was so much more than just an ethno-bop. Great energy and a 3rd place which deserves to be remembered more. :)
YAYYYYY I WILL SEE TWO SONGS FROM MY COUNTRYYYY 🇷🇴 Edit: wow you liked 2010 but put 2005 in F tier… I kinda expected the reverse, given Luminita Anghel’s outstanding vocals Alsoooo, since you’ve mentioned what Zlata Ognevich’s song “Gravity” means to you, my own favorite song from ESC all-time actually does that same emotional role to me: of a core memory. It was in 2019. The second ESC edition in a row I was watching without my country in the final. I was only watching it to have fun on a Saturday night. And then, Zala and Gasper showed up on the dimly lit stage. And I fell in love. With the song, and with the way they were looking at each other throughout the performance. Adorable, minimalistic and - since I’m a fan of electronic music of all kinds - it was also a great listen to me. They only came 15th. Many people said their song was boring. I say, they just didn’t make the emotional connection that I did. The song is in their native language - Slovene, and somehow they made it sound like the sweetest thing possible. You were talking in another video about The Common Linnets and how well they created intimacy in their performance - pretty much that happened again with Zala and Gasper, only that almost everyone slept on them. The song itself is about self-love - and honestly, I feel it’s a song that more people should see the translated lyrics to. It’s beyond beautiful, and since 2019, I have become a genuine fan of this contest, despite the EBU’s best efforts to ruin it for me, and despite having seen Romania in the final only ONCE since (btw WRS was so robbed).
We need y'all to come back asap😭😭 I also think Gabe couldn't be more right in 41:11 , and I would say Viszlát Nyár is my Gravity. I understand how it can be hard to digest, but the fact this was Hungary's entry during the first time ESC was in my country and the first time i kept up with the show since the semi-finals, it stood out to me being a rock&metal enjoyer and the emotional weight of the lyrics being about going through the loss of someone you deeply care about (the main singer's father's death) made viszát nyár stick with me till today. Sebi was one of my favorite 2019 songs, too.
this is a great selection of songs. My fave are Cesar Sampson and Zelijko Joksimovic and of course Ovi and Paula - adorable Jerry Heil and alyona alyona
Eric Saade is apparently on good terms with SVT and is the host of "Hello Mello", a new show that's like melodifestivalen for 13-15 year olds. I'm very glad he's not out in the cold and he said himself that there's no bad blood between him and the broadcaster ☺
You talking about Gravity in such an emotional way has honestly made me tear up a bit and think about my childhood, the things that shaped me as a kid. And then I thought about the Eurovision song that made me fall in love with the contest. Cha cha cha by Käärijä made me so obsessed with the song and the contest at that time, partially because I had been trying to learn finnish (unsuccessful) because I have a finnish girlfriend. She was the one that introduced me to that song. And I absolutely loved it, I still play it often amonst my favorite songs. I even got to see him live in Munich a couple weeks back and it was an incredible experience as someone eho doesn't go to a lot of concerts. Actually it was only my 2nd time, my first time being The Weeknd's Europe Tour in 2023, also in Munich.
I'm at the half point of the video and unless A and S tier are filling up like crazy, I don't understand all the "I must be harsh" "Can't rank it higher" talk. Be a fan, man.
Thank you for sharing your lovely story about your personal feelings and connection towards Gravity, it's such a good song. For me, my song that hit at the right time was watching Molitva win and being so moved in ways I didn't yet understand as someone who hadn't realised she was a lesbian yet
Swede here. I used to think Sanna Nielsen sang ”undo myself” like it was a song about suicide. Maybe because I couldn’t believe that someone would write ”undo my sad” in a serious song.

I feel like comparing Helena Paparizou to herself could have actually had intellectual value, even if Gabe didn't intend it that way. Like, putting into perspective how she had a much better performance in the past and didn't live up to the expectation now is a very relevant point. Looking at you, Loreen from 2023!
2021 was cut-throat. i'm no vocal expert but gjon's tears has one of the the most impressive voices of any of my favourite artists. the extra high note he did in the jury grand final was incredible, and repondez-moi was also my favourite of 2020.

The singer was supposed to be Ines (2000) but she had a change of heart
How you're talking about Zlata reminds me of how I experienced Kate Miller-Heidke's "Zero Gravity" in 2019 - it was hitting me on so many levels, regarding the journey that I was on. In many ways also regarding my journey as an artist. I felt very seen by the latter entry. It induced me with incredible joy, and oh wow, I just realised the two songs are called "Gravity" and "Zero Gravity" (and I have always loved them both - they were my personal favourites of their respective year).
kate miller heidke is the most listend esc song ever by me... i remember the limitless energy that i got listening to that song
"truly has the subtlety of an illegal annexation" WOW
Maria Teresa should be in S tier period
u gotta do 4th and 5th now too yknow right? you aint getting out doing only 3 🙏🙏
At least all songs in the top 10. 😁
Honestly... I would be very very into him doing every single place hahaha

As a Swede, you 100% have a free pass on "undo my sad". We also don't know what that's supposed to mean, lol.
How dare you make me cry when talking about the effect "Gravity" has had on you!
I kinda loved that Nemo entered to Gjon's awesome vocals - Gjon should be in S tier. Chanel being in a tier above for me is wrong.
Exactly! 200% agree!
Their legacy was created afterwards, this song was their foundation
i love your channel !! i'm still a fairly new esc fan and every video feels like a little history lesson
Cant wait for gabe to rank every eurovision 4th place since 2000!
Rightfully slag off Russia 2007s lyrics but yet you give Chanel a free pass for "zoom zoom on my yummy"???
It makes sense becuase she's talking about sex and anybody that's old enough to understand, would
It was so sweet seeing you getting all emotional. 😊
I know how you feel in regards to the pure joy of your country getting to host Eurovision. I’m going through this now because I’m Swiss. For years I’ve been hoping for my country to finally win again after such a long time and being able to witness it. This year this dream came true and now I get to see Switzerland host the contest. 🥹
P.S. I also really love Gravity and I feel the same pure joy when listening to this song.
Imma need Jay to expose the footage of Gabe comparing Helena to herself 😂
And hard agree on 2021, 2017, 2011 and 2010 all of them being such bangers 🥰
I'm still shocked they even let Israel compete this year. Absolutely hypocritical to remove Russia but keep them.
Because Israel didn't start the war, the muslims did.
Literally no country petitioned to remove Israel, a majority did for Russia 😊
@ No
@@karinm.doesitagain2620which is hypocritical
@@karinm.doesitagain2620 a LOT of people did sign petitions and protested in other ways to remove israel, because sane people wouldnt want a “country” like that to participate

Not you calling Epic Sax Guy Moldova's biggest cultural export when Dragostea Din Tei is right there.
I was listening to SloMo earlier today and I was thinking about that exact thing you brought up, namely the fans hating on her in February and then in May they all love her. Good that you brought that up!
Not everyone behaved that way, she had some true supporters since day 1 (myself included)
@@theincomparablemess I completely agree and I'm so greatful for the trust the juries put on her. It was crystal clear that she was the stand out of the BF, but the public was too focused on the other 2 songs to even pay attention to her.
@@adriann1829 a great example that 100% televote isn't a good idea
Mate I have to admit when you got emotional about Gravity and what it means for you and your passion for the contest it really made me very emotional too thanks ❤
As a Spanish person myself,i genuinely remember watching the live grand final version of the performance and i was screaming and going crazy over this bcuz of how insane it was back then,i don't think we'll even top this and it makes me sad this still didn't won (Ukraine deserved it tho)
Not to mention Chanel would have won if not for the war. Ukraine stole more public than jury points. She was totally robbed.
Gjon's Tears' vocal performance in 2021 was absolutely fantastic.
When I saw Brainstorm on the Eurovision stage that year I fell in love with them. Still loving the band until this day. 🙂
I love how whimsical "My Star" was! Probably the best Latvia has ever sent.

The lead singer of Brainstorm also cohosted Eurovision in 2003 for Latvia along with the winner Marie.

Just found this channel today and already binged these rankings videos, would love to see more!
Can't wait for "ranking 5th places" and Eden getting Polina Gagarina treatment from you :)
Or even better, getting thrown off the list 🎉
Polina walked so that Eden could run
@Darko_Milosevski03 well, it makes sense
@SilversonXmusic It sure does
And plus Eden is half Russian
I know Eden has a bit of Ukrainian decent but I don't think the Ukranians like her
Ukraine gave Israel 0 points in 2024
Next year I hope we don't get a Eden Gagarina 2.0
Gabe: How tf can you write an expression like "my sad"?
Song writer: Sorry... my bad
Not me crying while watching a video about ranking every 3th place in Eurovision 😅
Thank you Gabe, great work as usual! ,💖
Antique in C-tier is absolutely criminal
Ignoring the fact that noa kirel should have been in F, this is a Zeljko appreciation comment. Nije Ljubav Stvar and Lane Moje are both amazing songs and I want him to come back

"In Sweden they speak English, better than the English do." Facts.
@escwilde222 honestly it's time for Sweden to send a eurosong entry in Swedish
I had completely forgotten unicorn beat due vite in 2023 and it took med 30 minuets into the video to realize it’s not here. And then I got just as mad as I was in 2023 all over again.
Romania 2005 was so epic, I mistook it for the interval act. A vibrant stage-filling setpiece which meshed so well with the song in terms of choreo and percussion. Spotless vocals which are hard to achieve at that tempo. Bonus points for the mix of modern with folk. It was so much more than just an ethno-bop. Great energy and a 3rd place which deserves to be remembered more. :)
YAYYYYY I WILL SEE TWO SONGS FROM MY COUNTRYYYY 🇷🇴
Edit: wow you liked 2010 but put 2005 in F tier… I kinda expected the reverse, given Luminita Anghel’s outstanding vocals
Alsoooo, since you’ve mentioned what Zlata Ognevich’s song “Gravity” means to you, my own favorite song from ESC all-time actually does that same emotional role to me: of a core memory.
I absolutely love zalagasper. Their new songs are also top tier, and I still listen to Sebi often, one of my all-time favorite songs in general.
We need y'all to come back asap😭😭
I also think Gabe couldn't be more right in 41:11 , and I would say Viszlát Nyár is my Gravity.
@@laeminiscence Viszlát Nyár rules! Rip their vocalist :(
this is a great selection of songs. My fave are Cesar Sampson and Zelijko Joksimovic and of course Ovi and Paula - adorable Jerry Heil and alyona alyona
Bro is defo going to go through every Eurovision act in the known universe
Can't wait for the video where you rank every 11th place in the semis!
your esc videos are absolute gold 😻
This series is a lot of fun. I would love to see your 10th place tier list. And 5th place as well.
lmaooo not me tearing up at the end, I feel the exact same way about this contest
I'm at the half point of the video and unless A and S tier are filling up like crazy, I don't understand all the "I must be harsh" "Can't rank it higher" talk.
Be a fan, man.
UNDO MY SAD, UNDO WHAT HURTS SO BAD. I believe I have made my point.
Suggestion: ranking 2020's songs
Gjon, Go_A, The Roop, Dadi, Victoria and many others... RIP to what could've been the most interesting ESC ever
Thank you for sharing your lovely story about your personal feelings and connection towards Gravity, it's such a good song. For me, my song that hit at the right time was watching Molitva win and being so moved in ways I didn't yet understand as someone who hadn't realised she was a lesbian yet
you have to rank the last places in the semifinals
I want someone to mock up that Spidermans pointing at each other meme but it’s 2001 Helena and 2005 Helena 😂😂😂
Swede here.
I used to think Sanna Nielsen sang ”undo myself” like it was a song about suicide. Maybe because I couldn’t believe that someone would write ”undo my sad” in a serious song.
tbh I though it was "undo myself" till now x-x;
Because I didn’t understand much English back then, I thought she was singing “undo my eyes said”

Jerry Heil is the sexiest Ukrainian in esc history
OMG, someone needs to send this to Zlata🥺 I'm sure she would appreciate it a lot❤
Also, the feelings that you're describing are so familiar. Eurovision is so much more than silly and scandalous contest for all of us❤️🔥 thank you for sharing😉
If anyone could share it with her, it would mean a lot to me!! ❤️
Can’t believe you put Brainstorm in c tier. It’s an absolute banger!
I feel like comparing Helena Paparizou to herself could have actually had intellectual value, even if Gabe didn't intend it that way. Like, putting into perspective how she had a much better performance in the past and didn't live up to the expectation now is a very relevant point. Looking at you, Loreen from 2023!
What about a ranking of Eurovision openers?
2021 was cut-throat. i'm no vocal expert but gjon's tears has one of the the most impressive voices of any of my favourite artists. the extra high note he did in the jury grand final was incredible, and repondez-moi was also my favourite of 2020.
This is making me giggle, I had no idea how MANY of my all time favorite 2000’s entries came in 3rd place 😂 I love you Gabe, thanks for this video even though we never agree on the ratings 💕💕🌸
Great video, Gabe! Can you do a ranking of ESC hosts since 2000?
Gabe talking about not even watching selections in 2013 and being so young makes me feel so old. How old even are you? I'm 37 and my first contest was 1995. Also, it's QwaarJet from the forums. It seems only yesterday when we were gabbing on the forums. Had no idea how young you were! So glad for your success. Long may it continue.
May I suggest host country's entries?
