Why does almost every version of this song cut of the end .THAT is one of the best guitar solos there is .
If Mark Knopfler isn't the most technically perfect guitarist on the planet right now, he's absolutely in the Top 5. Hands down. I've seen him run other people on the list of "greatest guitarists" right into the ground with his skill. You should absolutely find the full version of the song, because this one shortened the absolute master-class in guitar playing at the end of the song.
Tommy Emmanuel every day of the week - but Knpfler is in the top 5
I place John Mayer at the tip top
As a left-hander that plays right-handed, a very novel finger-picking style and a bit of a lazy slide I would say Mark is wonderfully distinctive but certainly not technically outrageous. He has a great ear and a lovely touch - that is what makes him a superb musician.
Justin Johnson. Spanish Moss
Vince Gill all day every day! As a matter of fact, Dire Straights had asked Vince Gill to join their group, but Vince had just started his solo career, so he declined.
If you want a treat check out the alchemy version with the best guitar solo you will ever see and the drummer was off the charts!
I agree.
One of the best live performance videos on UA-cam!
Drummer is an insane beast there. ;]
Right, if you like guitar & drums, maybe best concert song ever by any group.
The best!
so true
"Walk of Life" and "Money for Nothing" are two more Dire Straits classics.
Tunnel Of Love, Brothers In Arms
Telegraph Road is a true masterpiece
Romeo & Juliet
Calling elvis
I'd say money for nothing and walk of life are there worst ever songs but maybe I'm a purest for the guitar
Best guitarist ever in the best band ever.
The lead singer, Mark Knopflier, is hailed as one of the greatest guitarists in modern history. He actually wrote this song after he stopped off in a pub for beer and when the house band stopped playing, the leader said “We are the Sultans of Swing, Goodnight “ Money for nothing and walk of life are two more their hits
Knopflier has said maybe his biggest guitar influence was J.J. Cale, and I noticed he seems to strum with the thumb much like J.J. did.
@@buckfan1969 Mark travelled over the Southern States, and picked up on the plucking, he's used his thumb ever since..
Telegraph Road even better
Well if a guitar player is able to have Eric Clapton backing him up at the "Money for Monserrat" concert, that says everything. Mark still has has a little bit of his Scottish accent creeping thru' when he speaks on the stage.
You don't sell over 100 million albums (in the pre digital era) as a roots rock band without being amazingly talented.
Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. Top tier Guitarist and wonderful storyteller. So many beautifully crafted songs that hit deep in the feels. I recommend Tunnel of love, Telegraph Road, Love over Gold, Romeo & Juliet, Brothers in Arms
And many others like : You And Your Friend ...
Alchemy version has a guitar solo that will blow your socks off AND the drummer is outstanding! Another awesome song by them is "Brothers in Arms" . I am glad you enjoyed this one.
The drummer is TERRY WILLIAMS an absolute star.
For a tribute to Mark & Dire Straits the group Home Free recently released their version of “Band of Brothers” keeping it close to his original while adding their touch…absolutely incredible!
@@hamblinta Marvellous..so moving... .
Brothers is my alltime No. one.
while the drumming and guitarplay are much better on alchemy , i like the vocals on this version alot more, its alot less swallowing of the words and they come out more clear
Dire Straits, my favourite group. They easily go between serious material: Private Investigations, Telegraph Road to fun songs like Twistin' By the Pool and Walk of Life. Almost anything you will play will be good
One I love and no one reacts to is Romeo & Juliet. Such a cool song♥️
Mark and Bob Dylan used to hang out in Muscle Shoals, Alabama when they were recording Bob's Christian albums at Muscle Shoals Sound with some of the Legendary Swampers!!
@@kenperk9854 I will sound "braggy" lol, but my dad does such amazing impressions, and plays guitar... so I was sang to sleep as a wee one by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, some dudes I don't remember except they sang House of the Rising Sun lmao oh! And Ricky Nelson... but he always told me he could never play like Knoffler... try as he might! I always loved Dire Straits mostly bc they were THE ones dad couldn't impersonate!😉✌
My fav song by them... well, besides SOS. But the R/J vid too odd, too artistic. But the song is amazing.
This song is a master piece.
Love this joint. But this version cut off the best part, he kills the outro…
I know right.
It was butchered. They cut out the best part
Yep, best to listen to the full version of the original.
Best part of a great song
One of those outros you never want to end. Like Hotel California or the Freebird ending.
Why does the solo get cut off!??
yeah, missing the whole outro solo. Disappointing.
great reaction, but this version is tame, watch the live at alchemy version its one of greatest guitar solos ever and the drummer and bass guitar are amazing as well
Omg loved your reaction an you both was smiling all the way threw this tune ❤ dire straits are from 50 miles away from my town my dad loved them and introduced me to them and we played air guitar them ❤
The Dire Straits Album Brothers in Arms, one of the greatest albums of the 20th Century!
I remember when this song came out...people went nuts over it!!
You got to hear the ending.. guitar solo is killer
I saw them on a warm up night in a night club on a cold Tuesday night in Newcastle with no more thane 2 hundred people there, getting ready for they're world tour! Long time ago but it was just genius!
Be honest. You've never heard of these guys before, have you. So many great songs to check out.
Dire Straits reactions should ONLY be done using songs/videos from the 'Alchemy Live' album(if blocked) or concert video (if not). The unbelievable guitar playing and Terry Williams on drums are second to none. All songs from it are great, particularly 'tunnel of love' and 'telegraph road'.
The performances and energy place this at number 1 in the 'all time favourite albums/concerts' for me!
Yes, whoever recommended this song without telling them about the Alchemy Live version should be banned from the planet.
NO NO NO FIRST you HAVE to listen to the STUDIO version, to get the magic of the PURE SONG (THEN you can go on to Alchemy) - only it MUST be the FULL-LENGTH VERSION though because cutting off the final solo should be a CRIMINAL OFFENCE 😡😡😡😡
"Sultans of Swing" was composed by Mark Knopfler on a National Steel guitar in open tuning. He thought the song was "dull" until he bought his first Stratocaster in 1977: "It just came alive as soon as I played it on that '61 Strat ... the new chord changes just presented themselves and fell into place."
The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced their name, the Sultans of Swing;
I believe this style was called new wave. For many it was a breath of fresh air from the glam hair rock.
Mark wrote the song after watching some band perform badly at a local pub and at the end the lead singer said, "Thank you and goodnight, we are The Sultans Of Swing"
Elvis, Prince, Myles Kennedy, and Tupac on the wall behind you. 4 legends of 4 *very* distinct genres of music. Mad respect.
Glad you guys liked it, I think it's one of the best songs ever written!!!!!!! Listen to their song Romeo and Juliet!!?
Thank you for playing this song. But if you can please please play the long version from. Alcamey live Sultans of Swing you say you like ROCK. The one you played was alright but this one will blow your mind the Alcamey live version..... Please.
But FIRST the FULL-LENGTH STUDIO VERSION....how can you deny someone the pleasure of listening to the PURE SONG together WITH the final solo???!!
(FIRST....THEN listen to Alchemy!!)
Omg they are so good!!..thank you for your reaction
Dire Straits are another great band from the U.K. London, England to be exact. Formed in 1977.
They formed in London, although non of the members are actually from London. They're from Newcastle and Leicester I think.
She This Song came on the radio back in the late 1970’s nobody had heard of them though it became one of my favorite songs!
Man, this was a staple of FM radio growing up, but watching it thru your eyes is like hearing it all over again for the first time!!!
Guys, if you listen to the lyrics, there's a story there too! Thanks for sharing!
❤️🥰❤️ 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ❤️👏🏼❤️
You guys were done short/injustice with this version...they cut off at the peak of an insanely devine guitar solo...omg!
Mark makes it look easy and effortless. A master.
“So Far Away” is one of my FAVOURITES by Dire Straits
I have it as my ring tone...!
@@rebeccasimantov5476 how cool! Very few people ever mention it! Nice! 👌🏻💛😁
j'ecoute dire straits depuis que je suis gamin ...
je ne m'en lasse pas , c'est le top
From France , greetings !!!
To watch your reaction takes me back 30 years cool
I put this song on when I want to be in a calming mood🙂 I'm in my 40s I first heard it in my early teens.... been a fan over since.... luv this band.🥰👍
You know you got it when your the lead singer and the lead guitarist. Well done.
If you REALLY want that guitar to sing to your soul, the Sultans Of Swing Alchemy Live version is A MUST!!!!
Please check it out.
He was picking those strings with his fingers, amazing
These guys came along as disco was exiting stage left. They got the Juices flowing again!
Stood out in the sun all day to get good seats for our general admission tickets to see DIRE STRAITS at Red Rocks in the 80s. . . .worth the wait!
You missed the best part of the song because the guitar mastery was coming right up. Find the full song
One of the most iconic guitar players out there. Do a reaction to Skateaway, he really shows skills in that one too
In my top ten bands. They cut off the last part where he really gets down. Also that was a live performance but the audio was from the studio version.
Love you guys, another great reaction. Unfortunately, this version is cut short and misses out some superb musicianship. I would also really recommend the 'Alchemy Live' version of this song. It's live music at it's best and takes this song to another level. I think you'll definitely enjoy. .👍😊👍
Yes, I was so disappointed that they did not select the Alchemy Live version of this song. They really missed out with this one.
Ever since it first came out it's been one of my all time favorites
Mark Knopfler is one of the most underrated guitarists in the Rock genre. He sat in studio with Steely Dan and played a jazz/rock style guitar on TIME OUT OF MIND on the album 'Gaucho' (you can also hear Michael McDonald on backing vocals). Check that out, as well as ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST on Dire Straits' album Communique'(1979). You can dig it! Some other DS favorites; MONEY FOR NOTHING (with Sting on vocals), CALLING ELVIS (really jams it out long in some Live videos), SKATEAWAY (from album Making Movies, official music video recommended), and WATER OF LOVE (self titled album Dire Straits, '78). Enjoy!
I love the rhythm for sure!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Love Dire Straits! Industrial Disease is another great song by them. You should totally check it out.
Me too! ❤️
being from glasgow always loved seeing mark in the early days of mtv
Hr JUST played guitar on a new Blues album by Dion (from the 50's ) Amazing as always. The track is already on here.
First time watching this channel. I enjoyed watching your reaction to this song. You both were spot on. Awesome.
Definitely watch the Alchemy version!
Brothers in Arms will amaze you. I promise
Thank you for sharing this with me my baby brother died yesterday and I don’t know how to live without him help
Mark knophler is one of the best guitar players in the world. Often ranked in the top ten of all time. Very distinct style
Been a huge Dire Straits fan since 1980, I was lucky to see them around 8 times. You should check out their Alchemy live show & watch again Sultans of Swing & Telegraph Road, you’ll be blown away
For those wondering this song is in the key of D Minor.
I can't believe you've never heard this 40 yo hit...Dire Straits were big around the world.
I have read where Dire Straits come up with their song. But I also read that Alan Freed who "coined the term Rock and Roll played trombone in his band named the Sultans of Swing back in the early 50's"
Great song! One of my favs! But you missed the end which is awesome. Love it! ❤️
"Brother in Arms" by Dire Straits is an Amazing song
Sadly guys you picked a poor video version of this song. It didn’t even have the guitar solo at the end. You really have to watch the Alchemy Live version of this song. It is probably one of the best live guitar and drum performances you will ever see. Absolutely incredible. Please Please watch this version because you will be missing out big time if you don’t. In this video You will see the true exceptional talent of Mark Knoffler on the Guitar.
Poor ??? but this version has the better singing i can atleast understand what mark is saying in this lmao , i dislike the singing on Alchemy but the guitar is much better there
All about the guitar. Genius at work.
IDK why they cut the video short, but the guitar lick that he was just getting into is one of the best recorded.
"Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink." - Douglas Adams, So Long And Thanks For All The Fish
Love this song. My favorite Dire Straits song!!! And it seems Shawn is well on his way to the same conclusion.
As Always Love You're Agenda Bless Prosperous be on You Thanks a MILLION FOR POSTING KEEP ON KEEPING ON 🙏 RESPECT 💯🎯
Sham,Mel,they are so good..Mark is the best guitar player in the world..I am 80 now he can make me swing..😊😊
Mark plays from the heart. A real blues player.
Like you love you Shawn & Mel 1000 times
A good number of years ago, I found myself in the hospital again, for what reason, I can't remember, some petty little life crisis or so, I suppose, whatever. A very pleasant woman physiatrist came in to talk with me one day and we were chatting, she asked me what type of music I liked. I answered Dire Straits, she says, who, I never heard of them. I don't know why but I respond to her and said, "yeah and I'm the one that they got locked away in the nut house, again". They kept me on for several more weeks after that.
Mark was in London and it stated to rain, so he went into a small pup to shelter and a jazz band called The Sultans of swing were playing, so this is how this song came about. As everyone has said, you must watch the alchemy live version
Mark Knopfler is also a very good acoustic player. Check out their 'Private Investigations' track to hear some phenomenal guitar playing.
Crazy this man finger picks all that on an electric guitar 🎸
STILL a GREAT SONG after all these years ❤️🎸
All hail Mark Knopfler 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
👍👍👏👏👏✨✨✨✨✨✨❤❤❤❤❤❤
Whilst the song was inspired by a less than average pub band, Guitar George and Harry are shout outs to George Young and Harry Vanda from The Easybeats, an Aussie band from the 60’s.
George is the older brother of Malcolm and Angus from AC/DC and was influential in their success as well.
Check out The Easybeats hit “Friday on my mind”.

I love you all so so much
This is that surfer rock genre. Love it.
You guys gotta do another reaction to the full song! the guitar solo at the end is BOSS!!!!!
What about to watch the Alchemy Live version of this song?
It's freaking mad!
Version you did watch above was cutted from the main guitar solo!
Mark Knofler plays guitar with a rolling finger picking bluegrass style which makes for a very melodic sound and a fuller unique riff tones from the guitar Keith Urban has a few songs that sound like this and acknowledges that Mark Knofler is one of the guitarist that he listened to while learning to play the guitar
Alchemy Live!!! Best guitar solo ever........
My favorite by them. Walk of Life is another great one. 👍
Do notice that Mark the lead guitarist doesn’t play with a pick because he is sooooooo talented!!!!! So says Austin Tx!!!!!!! 😎🍸
I love how you have Tupac and Elvis there in the wall. Two of the greatest.
Great reaction. Man, the outro guitar solo is the icing on the cake for this song. Smh as to why it was cut off.
Every version of this song reacted to is different. This one is a clean neat one, featuring the bass a lot and Knopfler seems to be enjoying himself singing and on his tasteful leads, thanks so much!
It's a shame the video cut off probably one of the greatest riffs you would ever hear at the end of this song.
I know, every time somebody reacts to this song I just hope they don't pick the short version.
If you'll notice, Mark Knopfler doesn't play with a pick. He's a finger picker, and one of the few guitarists the late greate Chet Atkins invited to pick with him. That in itself says something, and the videos are great.
Just two great guitarists having beautiful fun.
Highly recommend the Alchemy live version of Sultan of swing...cheers 🍻! That will blow your mind into a kazillion pieces! 👌🏻
Leo Marachaoli ( I think that’s how you spell that) did a awesome metal cover of this. He takes songs and Metalizes them. His first viral video was Hello by Adele. His channel is Frog Leap Studios. He puts out a new song a week on Friday. He does most instruments himself, rewrites, costuming, video, post production. All of it.
If you guys have Ten minutes, check out the Live version from 1983!!! It's BRILLIANT!!!!!
Same reaction I had when I first heard this song in 1978
It's never been PC but Knofler will always be a legend to me ,telegraph road ,brothers in arms an on and on and on
this is a great track written after Mark Knopfler saw a dixie jazz band in a south london pub one night and the general performance/actions of the band members. Listen to Brothers in Arms, that's a very emotion track where Knopfler's guitar tells the story alongside the lyrics.
Mark Knopfler is one of the few guitarists who can share the stage with B.B. King and Eric Clapton. You should check out one of the sets the three greats have recorded together.
