Most miserable night ever. I know the feeling. Had a similar experience once... I went for a day hike. About 15km. But I started a bit late and it was harder than I expected. It was a lovely, sunny early Spring day. I had a good jacket, a lighter, a pocket knife, a tin of stew, and plenty of water. I was about 10km in when it started getting dark and I realised I didn't bring a torch. I wasn't worried about being lost, I knew where I was, but I was worried about falling off a cliff in the dark, so I decided to camp till morning. It was already dusk, so I didn't have time to build a shelter. I found a spot under a big tree, a sandy bar by the river. It doesn't snow here, but it can get to low single digits in early Spring on clear nights. Cold enough to frost the grass. So I figured the tree would help shelter me from dew. Don't have to worry about bears, either. Except those pesky drop bears. So I built a fireplace, and scraped together enough leaves to make a bed right next to the fire, and gathered enough wood for the night. Ate my stew, and settled in for the night staring at the stars... Except about midnight, it got _really_ cold. I was freezing. So what I did was take one of the large rocks from the fireplace, put it inside my jacket, and curl up around it in foetal position. That kept me warm enough for about half an hour of sleep before I had to wake up to tend the fire and swap rocks. And my feet were icy, so I'd actually stand in the coals to warm up my boots. Anyway, this went on all night. Longest night of my life, ever. Looking at the sky, waiting for the sun to rise, spooning a hot rock... Misadventures are fun... When they're over. :)
One thing I love about these videos is you explain what you're doing, why you're doing it and some of the things you've learned from not doing it. I just started watching you a few days ago and can't stop thinking about how amazingly talented you are. I have been telling everyone to tune into your channel. Very informational
I agree. I really appreciate the honesty. My advice for stuffing with cattail fluff is to introduce the entire cattail into the hole of the liner before removing the fluff, then you pull the stick out gently and repeat. That way there's far less waste and stress. This method has the added bonus of keeping your in or are the warming fabric for longer, which I'm sure Greg would have appreciated that little bit more.

Thank you so very much for sharing your experience and expertise. May God bless you and protect you Sir.
Wow, came across your channel for the first time today. You have a great skill at making such highly informative videos as well as being such a rad human to learn things from. Please keep it up!
I did this in Utah when my car died. I had a good coat but not pants and no blanket. So between my thermals and levi's I closed the legs and stuffed in between them and stayed toasty! Now my vehicles are always prepped! And it's served me well many times!
This reminded me of my childhood... we had a huge garden with young trees and old... lots of debris and ole twigs/branches... as kids we used to build shelters all the time, but never as much as when snow came... it was like we knew we rely on these skills. Looking back now... we were pretty smart kids :-)
The shelter was awesome, glad it didn't rain , there was a open spot where rain could have fit & it does look nice for sure , i would sleep there if i needed to .
That story with the bear tracks was wild. This video came up on my recommendations and I'm glad it did! I love a good story and useful information that might save my life one day. Can't wait to see more!
i had to insulate the same way when caught in an early winter storm. it was a sleeping bag though. i found it worked much better to insert the cat tail intact then break it up.
For those in doubt of Greg's survivability, he last 53 days(!) in Alone season 3. He is a hardcore, down to earth bushcrafter. Don't let his appearance may deceive you, and you will be surprised on how good looking when he was young. I dare you~ ;)

Great Video! I am an old Eagle Scout and former Outward Bound participant not sure if you are familiar with the program I was dropped off deep in the mountains with my survival knife canteen a large contractor heavy plastic bag and a compass. Oh I had my fire stick to start fires. No food or water or shelter. Watching you prepare for the weather and hearing your story being wet no jacket no weapon to defend yourself brings back memories. I maintained my weight by making traps catching squirrels and rabbits and fishing with a homemade spear although I had fishing line in my knife handle and hooks and matches I kept those in reserve in case of severe emergency. The stream water was clear and cold to me better than sweet tea on a hot day! Black bears and bobcats were the predators I had to keep an eye out for. Like you I scouted the area found water supply built a shelter very much like the one you built. I used fir bows to make a bed it was waterproof and warm even though it was close to summer it gets cold at night in the mountains. Well thank you for bringing back memories of a time gone by. I overpack on my day hikes just in case. I have shared my supplies with people who got into bad situations on many occasions. People always ask why I carry so much stuff on a day hike. Well, it can't hurt and if nothing else I'm getting good exercise. Great story Greg. You're the master.
Just love your outdoor videos. They help my mind escape from being inside all day long.
I look forward to these videos the most to be honest.
I love this channel! Please someone get Greg a sponsor, man does he deserve it. Great job Greg as always my friends stay save and keep up the great video's.
Clearly he was a MEGA FOX when younger, and he is now ruggedly handsome. Love that hair. And I pick him for my team.
JUST SAYIN
Quit bein so horny Jodie
Greg, I appreciate your time and the effort that you put into your presentation. You not only demonstrate the how and why, but the importance of the method to use to give you the best possible outcome, in a survival situation .
15:56 have first time seen grouse is druming.this man is a genious.
Yes me too
My grandpa showed us this when we were wi. Never forgot, great to see it done again!!!
Oh man, I been on the Rockies, when that sun goes down temp drops so fast.
5 minutes in and I already know I want to watch every one of your videos and I will look forward to more...keep it up man, thanks
Great vid! Greg is settling in, better filming, more talking, awesome information! Great vid, got my Dad watching also.
Love the stories. Please keep them coming.
For those in doubt of Greg's survivability, he last 53 days(!) in Alone season 3. He is a hardcore, down to earth bushcrafter. Don't let his appearance may deceive you, and you will be surprised on how good looking when he was young. I dare you~ ;)
Hello, yes, he is a survivalist, and...he’s still good looking. Have a wonderful day
He looks like his face caught on fire , and a bystander put it out with a shovel. He ain't much to look at or listen too.
@@thebigfellar7178 Im sure youre a beauty queen.
@@jerseyjunior I'm more injun than him ,I can live off the land with just a little . He wouldn't last a week in real life ,and you can spot this easily. It 's all T.V. you can see him waiting on cue for the ""Go"" He is not a good looking man. I ain't bad , I was a drywall man once too . but at 6'5 250 I wasn't suppose to do drywall or brick work . I did survival ,camping ,hunting, fishing, etc My entire life , trained by a cree Injun , There's real life and fantasy , I am the real deal. Peace.
@@thebigfellar7178 Sure bud
I am now a 100% handicapped back broken in car wreck neck been broken 3 time’s now lumbar discs going and I need a kidney transplant. I go to hemodialysis 3 times a week to survive. Top of the Day to Ya!! Gene from Outerbanks of North Carolina!!!
im sad to hear you story try to be strong still

Mr. Oven. You must read a story called, "to build a fire" good old Jack London
I'm so glad you were on tour with Zachary. Otherwise I would not have discovered your channel. This video was very informative. Thank you for sharing your story with us. This is how we can learn from mistakes. Your filled jacket with the reed seeds is great. I will test this as an underquilt in autumn. Keep it up. You are a likeable man with a lot of experience. Best regards from Germany, Marko.

I like the fact that you are or seem to be honest about the things you experienced. It would be pretty epic to go do a few days in the wilderness.

Subscribed a week ago after the algorithms blessed me with your channel. I love these stories. I spent the first half of my day fishing in my little aluminum boat listeming to your videos. Never stop, you will never have to install another piece of drywall again. Write your books too! Cheers from the Pacific North West.
"Everywhere I go, branches attack me."
Priceless!! 😂🤣🤣
You are my favorite! I watched your UA-cam channel then a friend got me watching the show ALONE and then I saw you and I yelled oh that’s my UA-cam bushcraft dude! I thought it was funny and now when you talk about it it makes more sense. I love that you’re so real and that you quote Red Green Show .. “If ya can’t be handsome you can at least be handy” lol I loved that. Thanks for this vid.
Mr. and Mrs. Bigfoot are watching, asking "Who the Hell's that Hippie talking to?"
No way man, YOU'RE AWESOME!! Love me a debris shelter, one of the first bushcraft type things I did back when I was a kid
