  • From pine trees to a year-round home, this is the FULL build of Greg's Off-Grid Tipi (Teepee). Ovens and Finn move in and furnish the place, spending the night. They even test the tipi in the Rocky Mountain winter after heavy snowfall.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

You could see him feeling a little embarrassed spending 1000 on the mosquito thing. Youve earned it treat yourself brother. Its just him in a t shirt n jeans with his dog and a lifetime of knowledge. Love your channel and love seeing Finn! I had a beautiful GSD too named Major, 16 long years and we grew up in the desert together; it would get to 50 C and he'd go nap in the heat, I hated when he'd refuse to come in and fight with me about it but he loved the heat and cold. Not me, I am an AC guy hahaha. Thanks for the video.

Beautiful teepee! Amazing you basically put it up by yourself. I do have a question…In the rainy season how to u keep the floor from becoming saturated, like I’ve experienced in a tent? I suppose u would need an elevated sleeping platform.

Great video. Welcome to life in a tipi. One recommendation if I may would be to use your inner liner. This is an important part of your lodge for a couple of reasons. With your lodge set up with a gap in the bottom, this creates a space where air can pass freely underneath. With the liner, it creates a dead air space between the cover and the liner allowing the air to travel upwards to the smoke hole. If you are building a fire inside, this creates a chimney effect where the air moving between the cover and liner will draw the smoke up and out. This will make for more comfortable sleeping, especially at night when you fall asleep and the fire burns down and becomes a bit more smoky. Secondly, it helps keep the lodge cooler in the warmer months by moving the hot air up and out of the lodge. Last but certainly not least, is that it creates what is called a "modesty cover." When you have a fire lit, or other lights inside the lodge, you backlight yourself and everyone outside can see you moving around inside. By having this installed, it will give you a bit more privacy.
Keep practicing setting up and tearing down your lodge. When my wife and I got ours years ago, it took us several hours to set up the first time. Now I can set it up by myself in under 45 minutes. One last recommendation would be to pick up a copy of "The Indian Tipi" It's History, Construction and Use" by Reginald and Gladys Laubin. This book is considered to be the bible by many if you are going to spend any time using this amazing piece of equipment.

    • @billparker987
      @billparker987 Рік тому +4

Inner lining is called a dew cloth for a reason, Dew will consternate on the inside of your outer cover and then run down and out at the bottom of your tipi. and not drip down all over you and your bedding. And as stated it will give you a smoke draw for your smoke hole, If you keep your flap set properly, away from the wind.

@dherman0001 that sounds like it was amazing. Bet you had so much fun. I’ve almost got my Quigley 4x4 van, completely converted and ready to go do the same exact thing. Going to travel the country for a year, maybe longer, and check off as many items on my bucket list as possible. I live in northeast Ohio and purchased the van from someone who worked for a news crew in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. They would drive it around the mountains and look out for/report on forest fires. I’ve been racking my brain on what kind of shelter I want to use for the times when I have nice decent weather, and can sleep outside instead of inside the van. I would absolutely love to do it in a teepee, but being single, and by myself it’s just not feasible that I could easily put something like that up every other day or so. Sure sounds like a blast though and I would surely love to do it… envious!!

    Well done!
Can't say that teepee construction is one of my skills, but once in Ontario I helped putting up one. It was in 2000. I was on my first of many long sea kayak voyages. That one had me paddling from Duluth to New Jersey, by way of Montreal. I'd stopped at Wawa, on the North shore of Superior. There was an outdoor center there with lots of instructors, half my age at the time. One was putting up her teepee with the help of others, so I joined in. It went up relatively quickly, but there were 6 of us, and some knew the process. Can't imagine the challange presented by putting one up, all alone, without prior experience. But hey, now I can. Just watched your video. Kudos to Colorado Yurt company! Looks like a real step up.

For the rock toss… you want to have a lighter weight heaving line to toss it, attached to your heavy line for the actual lifting, sort of like fishing electrical wires through walls. Epic tent, awesome editing, and a great video. Normally I don’t watch “really long” 1+hr videos, but this was worth every minute!

I've thought about doing this if i ever got my hands on a bit of land next to a reserve or somewhere civilization can't intrude in a few yrs! I can actually see myself as kinda Grizzly Adam's with lots of critters hanging about! I live outside of Denver. I give up looking around here(within a hundred miles) for something usable. Found a nice lil valley that had fresh running water, lots of wildlife, nice an heavily forested with even usable hardwoods and a few nut and fruit trees. Depending on what shape your in ,about a 2 hr walk into the area. If one made the trip a few times you could cut half an hr after you familiar with the area. It was beautiful. I found a clearing against the eastern mountain with a good sized cave about the size of a large room that narrows down to the floor of the cave. Perfect i thought to build into my cabin design id been thinking of. Best piece of land I'd come across in 20yrs of serious looking. Here comes the problems. Closest maintained road was the 2hr hike ,nothing else less than 10 miles.
Owner wouldnt allow a road across his property or utilities because ground is mostly rock with varying depths of dirt on top so you couldn't just bury electric lines, but would allow for a cut trail atv size. So i thought maybe make it a summer refuge and camping spot. But it just wasn't to be. I'm 64 now and have pretty much given up on any of this. But have fun buddy your living what some of us can only hope for.

Loved watching this! My Uncle spent every summer and fall in an authentic teepee, I spent many days inside visiting him but had no idea how much work went into setting it up. ALL of his equipment, bedding, decor, clothing etc was hand crafted from hides, shells, beads, stone, wood, wool, etc. NOTHING he had other than his knife/hatchet, first aid kit, cooking pan, oil lantern and coffee mug were mass produced. The first aid kit was honestly there just for back up b/c he made his own "medicines/salves" that he learned from generations past.

As a Canadian, I approve this guy is a real Canadian. People in the states seem to think because we have a communist dictator in office that we are all stupid up here in Canada. Majority of us are good old boys just like this man.

I built my own tipi. It was about 12 ft across the floor. Poles were approximately 18 to 20 ft. I'm 72 now. I was about 40 when I built it. High winds and rain didn't phase it. I'm a widow, but I feel it was the easiest tent I've ever set. I never should have loaned it out. They burned it down.

My dad was in Jeremiah Johnson. He was one of the grips. He's the one who would chop down the tree with an ax and get it just about to fall and then they'd pull him out and Robert Redford would come in. Hit it a few times and it fall down.

I love this video every time I see it. I put up a teepee with 20 ft poles when I was twenty some years younger and a longhouse shaped teepee (it was big) while i was living off grid on 4 acres another time. I am 75 now and I want to put up another one to use as a green house this winter if I can,---with help this time! This old grandma wants to build a small rocket mass stove in her teepee to save some of my food plants if i can. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

    1. We just wacked them- the freshly felled trees) with the back side of the hatchet along the length which ...using the steel for leverage, seperated the bark quite easily. Then we tied them tight and let them season and dry out by putting them in our creek for 6months. Yes, I said dry out IN water. Kept them un-split, straight as, and was a good thing to do. Patience is way more than just a virtue. I lived in that 18' tipi for over a year out in the bush (Australia). I had put a socket outlet onto the side of my toyota landrover wired tk the battery, and when I got in at nicht, I had a lead outside the tipi with a plug on one end, and a LED light inside the tipi with a switch next to my bed, with an inline resistor too. Worked a treat when I still needed to make my fire and cook dinner after dark. Second best year of my life... every morning first thing putting my feet on the bare earth was about as good as anything Ive ever experienced. amen sista.❤

First best year? Living with Yolngu in Arnhemland, learning to laugh again, seeing nature and ritual in a whole new way, going hunting for wild honey or tree bark, and being taught things I could never know without the patience, good humour and knowledge of a people more honest and genuinely good spirited, than any Ive ever come across. I will forever owe them a debt of gratitude. ❤❤
