Also, wanted to add, the very last solo on this montage was during his farewell tour and at that time, he was in the late stages of Alzheimers. There's a documentary of his struggle abd his final tour called I'll Be Me. Definitely worth adding to your list!
Thank you for your Jimmy Webb marathon yesterday. As you know, he was a part of the famed “Wrecking Crew” ace studio musicians. “The Wrecking Crew” documentary is sooo good. I would highly recommend it, but you probably would burn through hundreds of songs watching it.
Glen was a master musician. He's rendition of William Tell Overture is mind-blowing. You should check out Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Steve Warner, and of course, Mr. Guitar Chet Atkins. Glen was self-taught and couldn't read music . Started out with the Wrecking Cew as a studio musician. So yes, he could play any style.
Great revue! Glen was twice blessed. He had a truly memorable voice and could make any song his own, as attested by all his classic vocal hits. And of course as you've seen he was a truly top flight world class guitarist, a prodigy from a very early age. On top of that, before he became a star in his own right he was a top session musician with the legendary Wrecking Crew out of LA. He played guitar on literally hundreds of pop hits for everybody from Sinatra to the Beach Boys. He even toured with the Beach Boys for a while when Brian bowed out of touring in the mid-sixties. As for his solo playing, look out for another example of his phenomenal technique when he plays the William Tell Overture at breakneck speed with a full orchestra. And oh yes, he plays most of it with his guitar over his head, ala Jimi Hendrix. Breathtaking!
He could sing as well as the best, and play guitar better than most. Thanks for covering Glen -- he was a singular talent. Glen's playing supposedly influenced even some famous heavy metal guitarists. He had so many different influences, and when it comes out, it's easily identifiable as Glen, who incorporated all those different styles into his playing.
From '69-'72 we were so lucky to see GC each week on his tv show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. In addition to his own performances he had wonderful musical guests. One of his favorites was John Hartford who was a master of the banjo and fiddle.
Yes and Hartford wrote his breakout single, Gentle on My Mind which became the theme song of the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. That show really started in 1968 as a summer replacement for the Smothers Brothers Show...After summer he had a hiatus in the fall, filmed True Grit with John Wayne and Kim Darby, then returned to a full fledged TV show the beginning of 1969 .
Hi Nick, Loved this !!!!!! Brilliant ! There is a guitar track I have loved as a kid, so much so I learned how to play it when I was in my 20's [ forgot it now ] and it's called "Classical gas". I have the single by Mason Williams. I adore that composition.... Glen Campbell does a brilliant version live on u.t and at the same concert totally blows everyone away with [ just type on u.t ] - William Tell Overture [ Smokin' instrumental ] including doing a Jimi Hendrix ......?.......Just watch !!! Amazing ! Thankyou for this, and yes a great idea to do others....Richie Blackmore .... Roy Buchanan ... Duane Eddy ... Pete Townsend ...Prince ...Joe Walsh....Gary Moore ...Randy Rhoads to name but a few. [ Think ya may have started something here Nick ? ! 😀👍 ] Byee Jim X
Thanks for this! It was Fun! My Dad was a huge fan, and though I wasn't a fan of country music, I learned to admire the great players I watched on the uniquely Southern American variety show, Hee Haw: Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Campbell, etc.
Glad you read the comments and dedicated a reaction to Glen Campbell!! One of the guitar solos was from the song Galveston, written by Jimmy Webb. I highly recommend doing a reaction to Campbell playing that song live. Beautiful, and sad, lyrics. Also, Campbell playing "Classical Gas"!!!
Glenn's flawless technically, but he's always melodic too, which I really appreciate. That last one is notable because it's from his farewell tour when he was deep into Alzheimers and some nights didn't know who he was. But when they put a guitar in his hands he played just as cleanly and flawlessly as ever. And speaking of metal, he was Alice Cooper's golfing buddy for many years. I got into Glenn by an odd way. My dad died in 2021 of dementia and when he was first diagnosed, I was recommended to check out Glenn's documentary "I'll Be Me" to understand how those things progress. It was definitely useful on that front, but it also made me an instant fan of his playing and his music.
Glen Campbell was an absolute master. I grew up seeing him on Hee Haw and Grand Ol' Opry. A wizard of technique, and he also understood and embraced appropriate melodic sensibility in his solo work. Fantastic!! Thanks Nick this was great fun.
One of the guitar players playing with Glenn during the video is Jerry Reed (RIP) -- an amazing guitar player in his own right. And sitting among the artists when Glenn played the acoustic Ovation was Chet Atkins -- another amazing guitar player and frequent guitar duet partner of Jerry Reed's.
I was nine years old when Wichita Lineman was a hit. Parents had the album in cassette and I used to steal my fathers cassette player to listen to it when he wasn’t around. Still remember watching his summer replacement tv show where he always started with “Hi, I’m Glenn Campbell”. Only saw him live once, in 2009 when he was doing his final concerts. Huge respect for him from the crowd. I know you were just joking about him playing metal, but who knows what he would play when sitting around with his good friend and golf buddy Alice Cooper.
You should also do a reaction to christopher Cross. He is mostly known for yacht rock songs but an exellent guitar player as well (he replaced Richie Blackmore once for a tour when Richie was indured)
I know we exchanged text about a review I did not enjoy, BUT. Thank you for this. And it’s a great idea to make this a series of great guitar players! I first got into Glen with his late 60’s-early 70’s soft country ballads ( mostly Jimmy Webb songs ), and I knew he was the TOP session guitar in LA in the 60’s, played on a ton of hit songs. In a double live album from the mid 70’s mixed in with his hits, and a tribute to Beach Boys and Elvis he did 2 guitar based instrumentals, one being the song Classical Gas that blew my 20 year old mind! If you do a series, keep you eye out for Peter Green! He founded Fleetwood Mac as a British Blues Band. At the time he was considered on par with Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. If nothing else listen to a archival version of his song “Albatross”. Even his Guitar is famous (Greeny ), he gave it to Gary Moore of Thin Lizzy, and now belongs to Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Again thank you for Glen Campbell solo’s. It made my day!
Even Eddie Van Halen had guitar lessons from Glen. Truth.. He was doing Elvis kind or rock back in the 50's and from what I know was in Elvis's band at one point.. but he went on to just go Country.. that's my favorite era of Glen Campbell... and I was a baby in the late 60's but it's what my Pop-Pop raised me on.
Glen and Rocker Alice Cooper were best friends and golfing buddies who lived close to each other in Scottsdale,Arizona. Alice gave an interview on the day of Glens passing. Among other things that Eddie Vanhalen asked for Alice to introduce him to Glen for a few guitar lessons. Also please watch Glen performing with 'Pops and the Boston Symphony. He does some 'tapping' on the guitar performing 'MacArthur Park'. Thank you for a really great reaction video!
Over on the west side of the industry, there's a lot of great guitarists: Roy Clark, Tommy Emmanuel, Junior Brown, Richard Smith, Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, just to name a few. Deep rabbit hole. Hey, and this coming from a rock guitar guy. Good on ya, mate.
There is a documentary called Chet Atkins: a Life In Music, and its got some rock stars we have all heard for many years, and lots of country musicians. He ended up being a very involved and successful producer in Nashville, but the guy was a brilliant guitarists who influenced so many other guitarists in both categories. Best of all, you get to see what a really good person he was.
👍 “That lady was like,”Whoa!” That Lady was Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn’s sister. That crowd was all Country Music Hall of Fame members. (Hall of Fame writer Ray Stevens was looking up close trying to screw Jim up)
Not many people bring up Les Paul these days. Long story but I started playing guitar when I was six, When I was a twelve year-old in '75 I starting playing in a band, mostly wedding gigs so a lot of jazz. We played a set at the Bloomsburg fair that summer, anyway to my surprise Les Paul was the headlining act and I got to play on stage with him. Damn heck of a musician, yet down to earth and one of the nicest guys I'd ever met.
Awesome that you checked Glen out. You could als check out some videos that feature the wrecking crew. They were the studio pros that played on lots of the 60’s hits included Tommy Tedesco, Leon Russel, Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Jim Gordon and many others. Great Job Nick.
Hey Eagles, it’s hard to know exactly what songs are played on together cause record keeping is pretty bad and they didn’t get the credits individually sometimes . I know that their acquaintance goes back a bit they played in a house band called the shindigs on ABC in the mid 60’s. There used to be a video on UA-cam but I haven’t seen it lately. There is a concert of them together on UA-cam called in session from 1983 about 40 minutes long and they. cover lotta standards. Let me know if you find them.
If you've never seen it check out the Documentry The wrecking crew. It's about L.A session musicians that played on thousands of albums, which glen was one of.
Glen Campbell was a great entertainer, I believed he also did the banjo occasionly. Another great guitarist was Lenny Breau died young at the age of 43 in 1984 but was well respected by other guitarists.
I found out what a great player he was when George Benson was a guest on his TV show. Of course they played together and Glen gave up nothing to Mr. Benson. I wish I could find that on YT, I would love to revisit that performance.
I've always been interested in the parallel development of Rock and Country guitar in the 60s and 70s. Im not a country fan particularly, but nobody shreds like the incomparable Jerry Lee Lewis, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins.
The storyof of Alice cooper being approached by Van Halen to get guitar lessons from glen Campbell is now part of the story as Alice cooper played golf with. Glen cambell

Glen was a session musician with the L.A. group known as The Wrecking Crew, who played on many of the great songs of the 1960s.

Yes, to seeing the guitar players!

Glen's playing supposedly influenced even some famous heavy metal guitarists. He had so many different influences, and when it comes out, it's easily identifiable as Glen, who incorporated all those different styles into his playing.
Thanks for checking him out, I knew you would like his playing. There's even a longer video of him playing solos, it's about 15 minutes long.
Glen was/is one of the greatest to ever touch the instrument. He's gone but his legacy and influence is timeless.
