I think it was Merle Haggard who said "if there was ever an example of a man God gave too much talent, it was Glen. Plain and simple." I so appreciate all your reviews of Glen's music. Thank you.
Believe it or not, Glen is one of the best guitarists who ever lived. Lots of other stuff too for that matter- I’m not sure there’s an instrument he couldn’t play! I highly recommend his final two songs, “I’m not gonna miss you” which chronicles his battle with Alzheimer’s. And “adios” which is his goodbye song. The video to adios is pretty powerful- it follows his guitar across the country after his death, being handed from one person to the next until it ends up in the hands of his grandson.
Alice Cooper and Glen were good friends and golfing buddies. When Eddie Van Halen found out they were friends he asked Alice to hook him up with Glen for some lessons..FACT
I teared up watching this video. Glen was such a talent then to see him go down with Alzheimers was heartbreaking. According to his wife and daughter the last thing to go was his guitar skills. The doctors said that music memory must be stored in all parts of the brain. Love you Glen.
Glenn was a self-taught guitarist, and couldn't read music, yet he was a highly sought after guitarist who was in The Wrecking Crew, a loose-knit group of studio musicians that played on all the hit records back then, even developing the bass lines, hooks and solos that made those songs so great and memorable. He played as a studio musician for The Beach Boys and even toured with them. He also played on albums from a multitude of artists from many genres.
Fun Fact: Alice Cooper who was a friend and golf partner of Glen's was asked by Eddie VanHalen if he could hook him with an intro to Glen and some Guitar lessons from him. I watched a vid. with Alice where he mentioned this.
Even though I was a child when Galveston was released, like Wichita Lineman, Galveston hits the same melancholy place in my soul. I love the original & it makes me want to cry.
When this live version, the entire concert, was presented, 2001, Glen Campbell was SIXTY FIVE YEARS OLD! His gifts as a musician were by then so refined, and his voice was still on top.
Always liked Glens music and had a few albums but never knew how great he was at playing the guitar till I saw him on HeeHaw with Roy Clark. Those two were truly magical when they played together. He was one of my dad's favorites so this brings back a lot of memories about my dad.❤🥀
I had the opportunity to watch Glen's television variety show from 69 to 72. I wasn't old enough for a full appreciation, but as a 10-12 year old, it was apparent this man had an incredible musical gift. His guitar playing is rightly praised, but his voice was also exceptional. I do remember seeing Glen on his show holding his own with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald in duets.
Reggie Crawford Don't forget the Beach Boys! He played with them from time to time and they wanted him to join but he had other plans. But he was part of the Champs. TEQUILA!
In 1969 I was on a flight from Wisconsin to California. I had donned a pair of headphones falling into a deep sleep only to find myself gradually awakened to this haughting melody playing softly and the realization that I was on my way to Vietnam. An emotional moment never to be forgotten. Ramsey
One of the most talented and prolific guitarists of the 20th century. Many people don’t realize that he was an excellent and sought after studio musician and was a member of the legendary “Wrecking Crew.” Everyone has heard him play guitar many times without knowing it.
There you go making me cry for real. My brother was killed celebrating being out of the Marines for a year. 50 years later I still miss him. It's still hard to think ilof him in Vietnam.
Glen is a Musical 🎼Genius in. My Opinon .iLove this Guys Music and He Can Burn A Guitar Up Now ..God Bless You Sir For Playing Real Country Music At Its Verry Best .
Glen was performing with orchestras around the country. He did this in Sioux Falls, SD for PBS. That's why he says, "IN SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DEE-KOTA." Hats off to the South Dakota symphony! Glen's southern roots coming out. He was from Delight, Arkansas. He calls it Dee-light. I gotta tell ya Dj Pj-roc, there are fewer, famous, talented musicians he didn't perform with than the one's he did. Just google him. There's a long list on it and it doesn't scratch the surface. Hat's off to you! I'd love to buy you a beer or three sometime!
Glenn's talent playing the guitar is epitomized when he plays the theme to the Lone Ranger before a live audience with an orchestra background. The song isn't meant for a guitar, but he easily keeps up with the orchestra. The amazing thing is, he is playing a single neck 12-string electric guitar, walking around the stage with ease and never missing a beat. The finale has him playing that 12=string above his head!! check it out.
Much respect on your presentation of the Campbell classic. I'm a drafted, disabled, Republic of Vietnam combat veteran '68. I turned 21 in Vietnam. My girlfriend ditched me while I was in Vietnam. I'll never forget the heartbreak this song brought to me in 1969. The Webb music is like a shot in the heart. I cleaned my gun while dreaming of the USA. Mortars and rockets reigned down on me in Vietnam. R.I.P. Glen. Godspeed...
ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATEST SINGERS AND PERFORMERS! I JUST LOVE THIS MAN. HIS MUSIC WRITTEN BY JIMMY WEBB WILL ALWAYS BRING ME JOY AND GREAT MEMORIES. I STILL HAVE HIS LP ALBUMS FROM 1968 AND 1969. THERESA SPATH.
Glen is the best guitarist and singer in my opinion. He is so talented playing other instruments as well. He also wrote some of his songs. He always sang from his heart and soul. I always felt what he was saying in his songs as if I was going through it with him,.
I met him in 1984 at an after party for the Gospel Music Dove Awards. He hosted that year after he recorded a Gospel album. I was in Gospel radio at the time. He was a very nice guy. Oh and he can also play bagpipes..which he did that night.
I have studied this man. My gosh what a talent. He could hear a song once & nail it. True guitarist know his talent. He could not read music. The music was in him. Glen always added that special touch to a piece. He had perfect pitch. To quote Merle Haggard “a man who had too much talent for one person that was Glen. Glens siblings & parents were all gifted but Glen shined brightest. I miss him
Glen was beyond category....To isolate him as a country artists is short-changing his incredible accomplishments as a session player and solo artist. He was a multi format and multi generational favorite.
It's always amazed me that Jimmy Webb, the songwriter, isn't more of a household name. He penned songs that became hits for many artists, including Up, Up and Away for the 5th Dimension but his most successful collaborations were with Glen Campbell and Linda Rondstadt. Check out Ronstadt's version of Webb's I Keep It Hid (either the album version or a live one). The power of her voice is incredible.
Although I do really like Glen Campbell, I feel like most of his songs sounded very similar style. They had the kjind of sound that makes you think of wide open spaces, or a soft breezy on a summer day, which explainers why so many of his songs found their way into movie sound tracks depicting exactly that. This song came out about year before I went into the Marine Corps, when I lived about an hour and a half from the beaches at Galveston. Special memories, great song.
I'm not a fan of country music, but Glen Campbell was a great talent. Love that he has a full orchestra behind him. This is definitely one of his best songs. Check out the studio version.
One of the greatest anti-war songs is "War," recorded by Motown's Edwin Starr. If you don't know it, you will be blown away by his performance of an incredible song. As far as Campbell/Webb songs are concerned, the studio version of "Still Within the Sound of My Voice." Song, musicianship, arrangement, and production make it one of the greatest songs of the era in any genre (is it country? is it pop?). Just a masterpiece. And "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress" is another amazing one, even if I don't understand what it's about. Many people have recorded Webb's song, but Campbell seemed to get to the heart of his music better than anyone.
Linda Ronstadt's version of Still within the sound... is also a great version, it was the first time i heard that song. i love The moon's a harsh mistress also
@@kevindohn6776 The entire Webb/Campbell album REUNION is a classic, with "Harsh Mistress" being just one of the gems. Another from the album is "You Might As Well Smile," as good as any the pair were involved with. Jimmy and Glen did a second album together, LIGHT YEARS, which has more great songs than "okay" songs. The main drawback is some synths were used, and it needed the same acoustic orchestration that REUNION had. Still, it's a keeper.
I would encourage everyone to watch a video on UA-cam called “the wrecking crew“. The musicians of the wrecking crew played on myriad classics during the 60s and Glen Campbell was a part of it!
Love this song ! I also have fond memories of Galveston its a beautiful place. Glen was amazing on the guitar, saw a video of him before he passed and even in the depths of alzheimers he could still play his guitar...♡
What a song and performer! Love hearing the classic songs that you don't hear much anymore! keep up the great work! So glad your going on this journey and taking us with you! Lot of great music you just don't hear anymore. :(
Glen had so many great songs. Thanks for the background you gave on this song; I had not even thought about the war reference previously. Great musical accompaiment with this one. (Obviously, the concert was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.) Hope you have a chance to react to "By the Time I Get to Phoenix".
The definition of country, is holding a microphone in your hand while having a guitar strapped to you, while being among the greatest guitar players who ever lived.
Personally, I like the original album version better - maybe because I heard it first but I honestly think it was better. The tempo is different and there is less background instruments which I feel suited the song better - but this has it's own charms. If you like this one then I suggest you listen to the album and see for yourself.
Looked forward to The Glen Cambell Show each week. He was one of the best guitarists, ever, along with Roy Clark. Both of these performers have deep rabbit holes to fall down.
I love your channel sir! I grew up on the music that you are reacting to. If you would like to see more of Glen’s guitar skills I highly recommend his video of The William Tell Overture from this same concert. It will blow your mind. Be well sir!
Glen was a member of the elite group of musicians in L.A. (The Wrecking Crew) which played on most of the giant hits of the mid and late sixties. He could act (True Grit), sing, write and play like a virtuoso. He had it all and even dated my friend Maria back in '65 when he got off a tour with the Beach Boys. He had just had his first hit out called Hey Little One and was becoming well known. I like the 45 version of Galveston rather than this version, which seems like a recording of a live concert or t.v. show.
It’s NOT about Vietnam: The protagonist is a soldier waiting to go into battle who thinks of the woman he loves and his hometown of Galveston, Texas. The song was first released in 1968 by a mournful-sounding Don Ho,[6] who introduced Glen Campbell to it when Ho appeared as a guest on The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Campbell's recording of the song, released in early 1969, was perceived by many (who listened carefully to the lyrics) as being a Vietnam War protest song,[7] but Campbell performed it up-tempo. In his original promo video, Campbell was dressed as a soldier in a military-style outfit. Webb has challenged the implication of Campbell's version that it was in any way "a patriotic song". According to Webb, the song is "about a guy who's caught up in something he doesn't understand and would rather be somewhere else".
I love JImmy Webb 's songs and Glen just does them jjustice. Glen also does a tune named " Can you Fool " by Michael Smotherman who played in Glen's band. You may want to check out that song...if you do, I hope you like it. Glen recorded a whole album and a half of Michaels tunes. Glen was an awesome supportive artist and bandleader.
Lol. Well. On another of your reaction videos, I suggested this song and this exact performance in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Then I discovered you did so! Glad you enjoyed! Take care, sir.
Glen Campbell’s musicianship was off the charts and thank you for bringing light to the meaning of this song’s lyrics. I have loved this song since I was a kid, but never recognized its meaning. I have to say that I enjoy your gentle, classy approach as you highlight artists and their music. I wish you much success!
A fine vocalist and a world class guitarist. One of the best musicians who ever lived. Thank you so much for including the writers of these songs in your videos. Without writers there's no music and these folks too often get overlooked. If you get a chance, look up the song by Sammy Kershaw "Still Loving You". Its one of my favorite songs and was written by my friend Rock Killough who also wrote for Hank Jr, The Oak Ridge Boys and various others. Its a beautiful song that I think you'll appreciate.
R.I.P. Mr. Campbell. Your music will live on for many years.
This song brings tears to my eyes..

Love your choice of music and your appreciation of the lyrics as well as the music. Keep the reaction posts coming. Thanks.
Many people aren't aware of what an amazing guitarist Glen was. Truly among the best of the very best.
Glen was a stand in bassist for the Beach Boys apparently
Great vocalist too!
I teared up watching this video. Glen was such a talent then to see him go down with Alzheimers was heartbreaking. According to his wife and daughter the last thing to go was his guitar skills. The doctors said that music memory must be stored in all parts of the brain. Love you Glen.
It’s subconscious so Alzheimer’s can’t do too much. It’s not memory

Glen was a class act! ❤️ I was so thankful that he and his family documented his health challenges with Alzheimer’s. He was incredibly brave 🌻
Glen was in the top tier of studio musicians. He was a part of the " Wrecking Crew" the famous sessions musicians in LA. Played strickly by ear.
Also when he was just in the LA scene filled in with the Beach Boys for a time!!
Wow... ..!!!

Was one of my favorite song by Glen Campbell as a teen. Thanks for sharing 👍
Enjoy watching your journey. A couple more hits from his early years, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Gentle on My Mind".

Great reaction! This brings back a lot of memories! Glen was an amazing artist!😊
Lol. Well. On another of your reaction videos, I suggested this song and this exact performance in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Then I discovered you did so!
Glad you enjoyed! Take care, sir.
Great minds

So gorgeous… love this version
Awesome artist, thanks!
Thanks Ben
A fine vocalist and a world class guitarist. One of the best musicians who ever lived. Thank you so much for including the writers of these songs in your videos. Without writers there's no music and these folks too often get overlooked. If you get a chance, look up the song by Sammy Kershaw "Still Loving You". Its one of my favorite songs and was written by my friend Rock Killough who also wrote for Hank Jr, The Oak Ridge Boys and various others. Its a beautiful song that I think you'll appreciate.
Thanks
Hard to believe he was once a beachboy, what a great artist he was.
You need to hear the William Tell Overture done by Glen Campbell awesome
