George Benson’s “Breezin” went triple platinum, making it one of the best selling jazz albums ever. It was number 1 in the jazz, r&b as well as the pop charts.
Nick, it’s a Flugelhorn. Great choices by GBMM. Herb Alpert is the “A” in A&M Record Company. Please go to Spain. That’s the most important thing to do now. I speak from experience. 🙏🙏
I remember being a pre-teen and I had to buy the Herb Albert album, well made my parents buy it. Love RISE! 40 years later, still have it in my collection.
You never heard of Herb Albert? No way? He was really big in the 60's as 'Herb Albert & The Tijuana Brass'
Then he kind of got burnt out.
And then reappeared a decade or so later with 'Rise' which is more a smooth jazz style than what he did with theTJB
Herb Albert was THE SOUND of the sixties.His music was everywhere. He also introduced Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 and married one of the singers, who was also the sound of the sixties. As far as getting burned out...He sold his record company for an outrageous amount of money and became an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor and could work when he when he wanted, or not. He came back in the late 70's with this song.
Nick, it is a Flugelhorn that Chuck is playing! It has a mellower sound compared to a Trumpet or Cornet which is sharper! My older brother bought the "Feel So Good", Rise & "Breezin'" albums in that time period! I can't tell you of the enjoyment that I had listening to Chuck, George & Herb in my early to mid-teens! It sure brings back memories of simpler times!!!

Growing up in the 60's Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass albums were a staple in my home as well as on the radio.Alpert Formed A&M records in the early 60's.
My parents had had every Herb Alpert album out there. I bought George Benson albums when I was a teenager. In my hometown "Rise" was playing on the radio. Growing up in the 60's and 70's we had the greatest variety of music to listen to. So much talent...no autotune. I feel sorry for today's generation and their lack of exposure to different genres of music. This was great...thanks.

By the way Nick, George Benson's album "Give Me The Night" from 1980 is also an excellent choice. It features George's remarkable voice. A selection I highly recommend.
I loved watching Chuck Mangione perform Feels so good. When it was time for another musician in his band to solo, he would sit behind his fender Rhodes and play! Such a great Flugel horn player!

Great selections brother Grey Beard. Seeing the beauty that is "Affirmation" make Nick cry made me tear up. The emotions he displayed are real. I get these emotions too from the pure musicianship, but also from remembering my childhood and those family members who introduced me to George Benson's music no longer here. Thank you from New Zealand bro. This made my day.

You nailed this one Grey Beard. George Benson's "The world is a Ghetto" would have been great too along with the Taxi theme. Throw in a random Grover Washington Jr track or even Earl Klugh, and bam. You got another classic reaction video and you make Nick cry again. Or at the very least, pull out multiple bass faces.

Feel so Good was at the forefront of the fusion popularity back in the mid to late 1970’s.i had this album and played it all the time.Maui Waui is another great tune from that same fantastic album.
back in the 60's Herb Alpert and the TJB had 5 albums in the top ten/twenty of the billboard charts. no one else, ever...

Affirmation is a masterpiece written by Jose Feliciano, George Benson’s Breezin’ album is a truly great jazz album crossing many genres, he is a true living legend and never forgets to let the joy of music come from his voice and fingers ✌️🔥
I'd choose George Benson's In flight album over the great Breezin album. "The world is a ghetto" is ten minutes of epic mastery.
For a singer of such quality, half of George Benson's catalogue is instrumental. A jazz icon and music legend.
Greybeard strikes again - great tunes, a couple of my absolute favorites (and Chuck Mangione). “Breezin’” and “Rise” we’re HUGE albums, listened to them endlessly!
P.S. my wife’s parents saw Herb live in the mid 60s, we got to see him during his tour for this album, and he is still out there doing gigs with his wife!
Saw Chuck Mangione 3 times. Once at the Mann Music Center in Philly, then at the Irvine Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania also in Philly and then at Mt. Gretna.
Saw George Benson at the Valley Forge Music Fair. Manhattan Transfer opened and George was the head liner. They did Route 66 as a encore together.

The Chuck Mangione LP has unbelievably great music on it (His brother Gap is also an accomplished musician, check out the album "Suite Lady" if you ever get a moment). The George Benson album is a masterpiece and the Herb Alpert album is also awesome!! Great picks Nick!!
He had another hit in 1979 with his 'Fun and Games' album called 'Give it All You Got' #nicknlexrequest It was used a lot for the 1980 Winter Olympics.
I remember the Lake Placid Olympics - it was quite an emotional event when the U.S. Hockey Team beat the U.S.S.R. for the Gold Medal. And at the concluding ceremony, Chuck Mangione's band was there to play "Give It All You Got" -- quite a meaningful and memorable event.
Yeah when you think about the level of perfection these guys reach for and attain. I agree it's very moving and if the world would just realize it's all right there and ready to go - no pretense just beauty.

Great reaction Nick. First and foremost I hope your mom gets better. These are three great songs, I have all of them. I remember hearing them for the first time when I was in my late teens, early 20s and the blew my mind as well. I grew up hearing Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass when I was a child as my parents really liked them. Then when I was in my 20s and he came out with Rise, it was amazing. Chuck Mangione song is so iconic. I was 17 when it came out and even at that age could appreciate its relevance and quality.
I’m reminded of the scene in the 2016 “Doctor Strange” movie, where the protagonist mocks his assistants for thinking he wouldn’t recognize this song.

"Rise" was used in an episode of General Hospital in 1982. Luke and Laura were dancing to this song, people called the radio stations all over the U.S. asking what this song is called and to play it on the radio. Record sales went through the roof.
Growing up near Rochester in 1977, “Feel so Good” dominated AM radio WBBF for months. (Chuck was from Rochester…so hometown feels)
The “radio” version was way shorter… not (Wayne Shorter)😅

One of the great privileges of growing up in the 60's & 70's was the instrumentals that were a regular feature of the top 40, we don't see them any more but these three were some of the great one's also you might Jean Micheal Jarre's "oxygene" and Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" .

Yeah George Benson can make you cry. We are awfully lucky to have a guitarist of his pedigree still around today. I was 14 when I first heard Affirmation by the grest GB in 1977. A friend gave me a cassette with this song on it. And when I heard it so mesmerised was I that I played that cassette probably 50 times over that day. I kept my ear pinned to my sansui speaker - and was sold. I am a jazz guitar freak and Benson is still my absolute hero. I think the guy on Fender Rhodes is Jorge Dalto - he had another keyboard maestro in Ronnie Foster. Wes Montgomery was GB's hero and one can hear the octave influence in there. Yes it's unfortunate that you could not be exposed to this music earlier - these were absolutely best music times; they will not easily return. Chuck Mangione an absolute legend indeed. Today's music can't compare
Feels So Good was a big hit. Radio Edit was like 3 and a half minutes. Flugelhorn. Mangione plays Flugelhorn, not trumpet. Much softer sounding.
His guitarist, Grant Geisman and Sax player, Chris Vadala are both excellent musicians.
First time I saw them at the Mann in Philly, Steve Gadd was drumming for him, though not on any album; just that live performance.
Played on more than just jazz stations when it came out.
Steve Gadd, as well as Tony Levin were part of Chuck's 1970 Friends & Love concert at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, NY and that is available as an album.

I first heard Chuck Mangione in 1976, my roommate was in the jazz band at the college I was attending. He turned me on to a lot of great music. Fun fact: I worked at Harrah's Tahoe in the spa as a massage therapist. After work one day I had some congestion so decided to take a steam bath, another employee and I went in and George Benson was in there warming up for his concert that night. He sang some tunes for us, just warming up stuff, very nice person. Free mini concert.
Cool fact! I also have one...my father-in-law once sold Chuck Mangione a car in Rochester NY where my wife's family still live.

The entire “Breezin’” album was an absolute jam. I remember hearing the tail end of “Affirmation” on an air check of our long time soft rock station, WNIC, from the late 70s. I had to find out what piece it was, ASAP. Thank God I found it!
I'm in a George Benson cover band called Affirmation in New Zealand. We are musicians from various bands who come together for jazz festivals. We even have musicians from the NZ Symphony Orchestra. I'd love to be in this band full time.

For full affect, clarity, and balance, an old quality record player and vintage speakers are a must. There is nothing clearer in the world. On a record all levels are balanced to perfection.

Still the same set up except added cd players over the years. a close friend I worked with was a technician and took me to a warehouse to find the best system for me. He was right ! Never needed to buy another since. Sound quality is top notch. 😀👍 Cheers !

Records are being produced fairly regularly again, and I'm so happy that people have wised up and are starting to appreciate the quality of records and record players, and they're making a comeback. Not very mobile though.
We had a quality National Panasonic record player when I grew up in New Zealand. My old man was a musician and funk jazz freak. He had all the albums from Average White Band, Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire, Renee Geyer Band, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Steely Dan, Grover Washington Jr and George Benson..
Listening to such music on vinyl is a must..

Herb Alpert was the "A" in A&M Records along with Jerry Moss and is actually Jewish even though most of his music is Latin flavored. My favorite album of his is Fandango from 1982.

The greatest smooth jazz album ever recorded, is "Chuck Mangione Live At The Hollywood Bowl" Great band that was flying on all cylinders that night. Check it out.
It's Chuck Man-jee-own and a flugelhorn, not trumpet. Also, you owe it to yourself to check out "Hill Where The Lord Hides" from his 1970 Friends and Love concert (or better yet, the entire concert). I was fortunate enough to be there when it was recorded.
You would love the group Spyro Gyra and their songs Morning Dance and It Doesn't Matter. Nick, you will love them - guaranteed!

It's pronounced Man-gee-own-ay. Kind of sounds Italian. And he's playing Flugelhorn on this track. This track is from another classic album from the '70's Feels So Good. Chuck once joked that one of his songs lost out on a Grammy to a song called Boogie Oogie Oogie. Not sure if it was this song or maybe Chase The Clouds Away.

Affirmation is a Jose Feliciano song. Benson wasn't really a composer. One song he wrote which I love is Nature Boy, which he sings (George has a wonderful voice, too!)
Herb Alpert sang a song called "This Guy's In Love With You", by Burt Bacharach.... guaranteed to make Nick cry!.. as it does to me.
"Nature boy" was written by Eden Ahbez and recorded by Nat King Cole, who made it a hit.🙂

You might not be ready to hear “This Masquerade” by Mr. Benson, the lyrics are about a break up and although it's sad it's a wonderful song and his solo is epic and yes he did influenced Metheny. G. Benson adds an 5th to his octave playing and that sets him apart. All the best.
Nick! I own a physical copy of that George Benson's album, and I can tell you that electric piano solo was performed by JORGE DALTO, an Argentinian Jazz pianist who is unfortunately no longer with us. He made 6 albums under his own name and he also played with people such as Spyro Gyra, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr. and Steve Gadd, just to name a few. Not super famous, but still an amazingly talented musician who deserves attention.

There’s a documentary about Herb Alpert that you can get on lots of services, including Tubi and here on YT, and you will be astounded by how much this guy has done. (He’s still touring in his 80s, and he still has it.) His 60s hits were under the name of “Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,” and for a while, he was the biggest-selling musician in the world. Sold more albums in 1965 than the Beatles. Oh, and he’s the “A” in A&M Records; the trumpet in the company logo is his.

flügelhorn, brass musical instrument, the valved bugle used in European military bands. It has three valves, a wider bore than the cornet, and is usually pitched in B♭, occasionally in C. It was invented in Austria in the 1830s. In the mid-20th century the flügelhorn found favour in some jazz bands.

I’m quite honestly shocked you’ve never heard of Herb Alpert before now. _Rise_ is such a ubiquitous piece of music, it’s a wonder you had not encountered it earlier. Alpert is also known for his “Tijuana Brass” ensemble (see tunes like _The Lonely Bull_ and _Tijuana Taxi_ for a little taste.)

Herb is also known as helping get Carpenters in the main stream. Couple other groups you might want to check out Acoustic Alchemy (smooth jazz band) and Maynard Ferguson (know best for Rocky Theme) but lots of good other stuff.
"Rise" was playing during that famous scene between Luke and Laura on General Hospital way back a few decades.

You guys rock, you're my daily "Music Appreciation" class, much more fun than what I had in college.
This marathon could have been called "Feels so very good!" Kudos to Greybeard for this sweet trio of songs! They all fit in nicely with the popular disco music of the time, though each was unique and had so much more substance than the usual fare. I saw George Benson in '77, in the first concert that I remember had a persian rug center stage. He was wonderful, of course. I'd known Herb Albert's music since I was a little girl and had always enjoyed it, as well as Sergio Mendez, who was also on A&M records, and which featured Lani Hall, Alpert's wife, in his group Brazil '66. Interrupta reactionem 😄 sometimes I can listen to music at work, so I thought, this is the right stuff. After being interrupted several times, I finally finished watching today.
First of all : great selection ! I know Chuck Mangione's song from radio, but searching for information, where you might have heard it, only brought Solid Gold, a Paramount 80s TV series.
The album reached in USA #2 in the charts, the single #4. I don't know any other hornplayer in Jazz.
George Benson is the sound of him that I like, that I had heard on radio, but when I bought a compilation, there was lots of songs with vocals, which I don't want to hear of him; I guess, I have to look for some older stuff.
Herb Alpert is even known by my parents 😁 they had a LP of him, and back then I thought "how boring". Nowadays I love this music ... and this marathon makes me want to hear more 🤘

A much shorter,single version of "Feels So Good" was everywhere on the radio in the spring of ‘78. I hadn’t heard this long version (wow), nor had I heard it with earphones until now. In a way, I’m hearing it for the first time, too!
The Strings section on the George Benson track i think were arranged by Claus Ogerman....For me they are the high point of the following albums because they are totally evocative and really capture your heart

The Fender Rhodes electric piano was everywhere in the 60s and 70s. Name the genre and somebody had a hit record that included a Rhodes.
I think it's one of the greatest instruments ever created. It's great that an instrument that began life as a way to help heal and rehabilitate wounded veterans, became a big part of the sound of a generation of music.
It's a coronet, and I listened to the song when my dad bought the album when it came out. As to Herb ... check out the original cover to the album Whipped Cream ... the dreams we had!
Saw Chuck Mangione live in Ft. Lauderdale the year this record was released indoors in a concert hall with excellent acoustics. Sat in first row of the balcony. It was almost like being in Church. Hard to describe the rapt attention given by 4000 mesmerized audience members during each song then the rapturous applause after each song. Amazing concert. One of my best experiences ever. 💓💓💓

However, I have been waiting for the right moment to direct you to a couple Jazz masterpieces that I believe you must experience: Maynard Ferguson and Big Bop Nouveau Band - Jazz Festival Viersen 1996, and Jazzwoche Burghausen 2001.
Each of these are relatively lengthy, live video recordings and absolutely fantastic compositions!
The music is captivating, the video quality excellent.

Chuck Mangione (yes Italian name), George Benson (a legend), and Herb Alpert, of Tijuana Brass fame. So much musical history to talk about, so little time. First of all, I get very emotional listening to music. Good music. And, I think that is the thing. I have to say say, that you are keeping great, wonderful music in the forefront. Alive. Dude, I'm gonna be 64 years old pretty soon, and I still get tearful listening to good music. That's what it's supposed to make you do. It's supposed to make you feel. Love all of the musicians you covered here! Love and appreciate the spectrum of genres you cover on your channel, Nick, and your deep appreciation for the art and the artists. The thing about growing up in the 60's through the great music days of the early 80's, I got to experience it all but it's what I grew up with so I didn't understand it didn't exist before and that one day, it would not exist anymore; it never occured to me that it would go away and it surely has, which makes me appreciate it all the more now. I so love new listeners of the younger generation being turned on to it and loving and appreciating it as welll. I think what blows me away the most is the range of music being created at that time, it was surely the golden age of music!
String orchestra conducted is Claus Ogerman one of the best conductors from the 60’s and 70’s check out Joao Gilberto Amoroso he is on the whole album here top notch !
