Dolly: "When I sang this song, I went to the bank. When Whitney sang it, I owned the bank." A LEGEND
yeah.... she's good.... And she could run Shell....
Dolly also said this about the royalties from the song: “She made the song go worldwide when it was first released. It’s a song which keeps me in wigs, hair and make-up.”
She made 50 million just by royalties alone. And she wrote I will always love you and Jolene in one evening. Now - there's showbusiness for you!
@@normadesmond6017 and you know Norma Desmond knows a thing or two about showbiz :)
😂 Dolly is a real one. She’s a National Treasure.
Whitney is too. RIP 🙏🏽
She donated 10 million dollars of the royalty money to a black town in Whitney's honor.
THAT, my friends, is class. I'm not a fan of Dolly's music or Country music, but I am a fan of Dolly.
Amen
I like some of her songs. She chose some good ones. Dolly also has a unique sound that separates her from the rest, but to each his own.
Same here, but oh man, she is an awesome person, with a hart bigger than she!
@@b_uppy
Not many can make me listen to country and enjoy it, but Dolly has a few songs that will, and this is one of them
@@LindaC616
I am picky about my country music, too.
It takes a really classy lady to acknowledge someone else's greatness. One reason why Dolly Parton herself is such a star....
Now, if Whitney Houston had only a little bit of that class. . . ?
@Rip Torn well said
@@josephbloggss7286 You mean classy like Elvis Pressley classy?
And wtf have you done with your life?
Such a generous lady. Shows she is secure in her own abilities and isn’t threatened by the talents of others.
She wrote it and the music too so I guess there is no reason for insecurity. Whitney Houston definitely took the song further but the king or queen of any song in my view will always be the writer of the lyrics.
I love Dolly!! She is such a kind person
Dolly is a class act. One Legend respecting the other legend. Not being shady diva like some other artists, she said in her documentary that is Whitney's record now but it is my song.
@Under the Surface Stunningly ignorant comment.
@Under the Surface She doesn't have to "keep" us because many of us love her personality, and are loyal fans. She demonstrates humility, class and grace. You can tell when someone's being opportunistic, manipulative and disingenuous and Dolly's not. You can feel her kindness and genuine spirit though a screen. She's has managed to go her 50 year long career without scandal, has been married for close to 6 decades. Maintaining a positive reputation and great personal relationships as a celebrity is difficult, I imagine. She's done it well.
@Under the Surface I don't usually defend celebrities because I don't feel it's smart or necessary to argue over the character of some I've never met. People like Dolly are the exception, though. The only thing fake about that woman, as she has stated many times, are her breast.😂😂
@@rantallaboutit very well said.
@@rantallaboutit : everybody thinks their 'fave one" is the exception, that's why they defend them just like you are here defending Dolly, so don't judge other people for that.
Dolly is such a class act. She had already taken it to #1 twice before that.
Never on Billboard hot 100 or WW.
@@andrese9805 Sorry, Billboard Country charts. Dolly is being gracious about Whitney, so if she’s not making it a competition why are you?
@@homefry707 : you were the one who mentioned that before, so it was you the one who started the *competition*
@@andrese9805 not trying to...I was merely expressing that while she didn’t feel the need to brag on herself she had made it a success of it as well. She’s so humble. Please don’t try to assume you know my intent, because you’re way off.
@@homefry707 : assuming nothing. You said something and I stated a fact about what you said providing more precise information.
Dolly is a beautiful soul. She is always so generous in her praise of others.
Dolly is the real thing. As a gay man, I remember her kind words about love and acceptance, coming from a corner of America you might not expect. A treasure.
This feeling is really beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I hope you know there are a lot more of us kind folk out here who love and care for you, yours, and everyone else. #compassion
😊✌😊In my RuPaulish voice,"Can I get an Amen up in here?
She's always been an ally. Class all the way.
You're saying in your comment that it's refreshing that gay men aren't judged while expressing surprise that a Southerner isn't homophobic.
This African-American male here🤚 loves the hell out of Dolly Parton. She's always been pure class all the way from day one. I fell in love with her original version because the lyrics were phenomenal but Whitney's version sent the song through the stratosphere. Dolly is a true iconic legend. If You Ain't Got Love is my favorite song by her though💛💗💛
I need to hear that song from Dolly.
@@nemospence2724 It's phenomenal. She sung it to Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies movie🙊By the way, I love that movie. Dolly was absolutely gorgeous in it.

I had no idea either... How gracious and honest Dolly Parton is. One supreme talent recognizing another...
It says a lot about Dolly that she can be one of the most legendary performers in history and still be so kind and so humble. Class act.
How much of a boss are you when you can give people a song and then forget about it. Wow, love Dolly.
Oh make no mistake -- she didn't GIVE (as in gifted) the song. Dolly made a lot of money off Whitney's version. Dolly didn't mean ''give" in that way. Lol
Valentino Miller lol. I know. Obviously she made money off it. I meant that she let them use the song and then went about her business and forgot about it in the process. That is a boss move.
@@olimakiella haha. It *is* a boss move !
Believe it or not, Dolly Parton is *74 years old!* She has written over 3000 songs for herself and other people. She is still humble. She is truly an amazing human being.
I absolutely LOVE Dolly and how gracious and kind she's ALWAYS been! She's always spoken about Whitney in such high regard. And they've always had such wonderful respect for one another. Dolly, you deserve EVERYTHING you have and more! I will always love you is simply one of the most beautiful ballads EVER written. I LOVE BOTH VERSIONS TOO! #GODbless :)
She’s so humble!!! I love her!!

I love you Dolly! You're such an amazing singer, friend and a powerful woman!
And that is why Dolly is a treasure!!!! What a class act.
Whitney’s version makes me cry every time ♥️
I have a friend and her husband worked on Dolly's security team a few years back and he said that she was THE sweetest , kindest lady ! I LOVE HER !
I I am not a true country music lover but I do like some country music. However I will always love Dolly Parton and thank you for writing a beautiful song that Whitney Houston took it to another level.
You are country and you have class and style Miss Dolly Parton. You put a smile on my face.
Dolly is a Class act.
It's always amazing when an artist like Dolly, or Dylan, or Prince, has a song that is elevated by another artist. It makes us feel amazing and has to make them feel amazing as well.

Dolly is so humble. She's a truly wonderful, classy woman.
Oh my god, she is so right. That song, the way Whitney sang it, DAMN. Like it gave us all CHILLS! It was simply marvelous. Dolly is a far and away better song writer than anyone else living, for sure.

Love love Dolly, and I love the love she spreads. I had to look up her other music like "Jolene," and that should be another crossover .
That is humility.
She is so generous, such a great heart . . I only wish Whitney could have heard her say that. I can only imagine how much it would have meant for her to hear.
Amanda Jarboe I think Whitney knew. Her cover of that song is a national treasure. One of Whitney’s very best - and that says a helluva lot in itself.

There are legends who are looked up by other singers. But you know you're in a different league when you're a legend looked up by other legends. Whitney Houston was that woman. Once in 100 years. 👑
The number of times she repeated this exact same thing makes me wonder how sincere she is. Like, at this point I would say omg you all know already the story
Dolly is a nation treasure. She has done is all throughout her amazing career: singing, performing, writing, acting, business, philanthropy.
...& savvy business woman that she is ..
she kept the publishing rights to that song...so IT MADE HER TONS & TONS
OF MONEY !!! Couldn't have happened to a better human being ! God Bless this woman who is a lesson in generosity ( sad the other millionaires & billionaires DON'T follow her lead - like they should ).
Dolly Parton is a down-to-earth person. Her fame and success did not get to her head at all. Bless her!

quite a compliment.
Dolly's version feel more personal, in a different way at least. I want to say it's more raw.
I like more Dolly´s version for that reason. Is more emotional and for me delivers the message in a better way.
Dolly Parton is an International Treasure with a GRACIOUS SPIRIT!
The world loves Dolly!
And yes, Whitney Houston had a marvelous voice.
Dolly is a national treasure
And Whitney should('ve) be proud to sing a Dolly song. Dolly has a mind for business and thank God she never sold the rights to her songs.
Yes now that’s an artist who appreciates and is full of confidence to say that about whitney who did a cover of her song unlike vitas who whines and threatened to sue because wonderful artist had covered his song but made it his own version it should be an honor for an artist to have someone to even wants to cover their song
Linda Ronstadt covered this song in 1975, on her album Prisoner in Disguise. Read somewhere that Kevin Costner owned the album, and suggested the song for the end of the Bodyguard movie, when the first song choice fell through. Whether that is true or not, Linda's version is stellar, of course. The album liner notes included handwritten lyrics by the songwriters, and I remember thinking that Dolly's handwriting looked so pretty and romantic, and suited her image perfectly.
Well said!
Whitney Houston is the gold standard of singing, in my opinion. She’s the greatest singer of all time, in my opinion. May she rest in Heaven.

Dolly is so fabulous. I can honestly say there isn’t a song or movie of her’s I’ve seen or heard that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. In interviews and such she’s always so positive and uplifting, so inclusive and inspiring, humble, innocent, wise and unendingly hilarious. What a gem she is to our world! 😂😂
This is why Dolly Parton is the GOAT. She is the ultimate songwriter. This, and her acknowledgment of The White Stripes' version of Jolene, as one of her favorites tells you that she understands that songwriting is telling a story, in as many ways as possible.
Dolly is one of the most legit, real, wonderful people out there. It's just a joy to see someone own their station and stature with such grace and sincerity.
She's the coolest aunt in the world
Recently I watched Yellowstone and the English actress Kelly Reilly played some hell of a role, would love to see her in this show
The money dolly made after the Whitney cover was released is the money I can only dream of
Dolly Parton, I don’t know what your about in real life, but you are perfect in image. Absolutely perfect.
In real life, she's about accepting and admitting to her imperfections. Which makes her even more perfect! 😆

as produced by David Foster is most impressive.
One cannot simply pull greatness out of a vacuum. If the basic fundamental seeds of greatness were not already inside the core of the original song, then it would not have been possible to raise them to such heights. It is important to acknowledge the great work of both of these remarkable women.
I disagree. Firstly "great" is an opinion. I do believe a song can be garbage by one artist, yet taken to greatness by another. You should listen to some demos. The beginnings of many songs that we think are great would surprise you. Greatness has to do with production, delivery.
