DOLLY PARTON on WHITNEY HOUSTON - Diva on Diva
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- In a series of interviews spanning nearly a quarter century from 1992 to 2016, Dolly Parton shares her take on Whitney Houston - and the song that will forever bond them, "I Will Always Love You".
She’s always spoken so beautifully about Whitney and the way she sang her song. If only everybody could be as gracious as Dolly. Everything doesn’t always have to be a competition.
Of course she's gracious. Whitney's version made, and CONTINUES to make Parton a shit ton of money!!!!
And fair play, why not, it's DOLLY'S song. Always will be.
Of course it's not a competition. Was Whitney ever a songwriter? Dolly was already a millionaire before this song. Elvis wanted the song and she refused because his people wantef the rights. She already had money enough to say no. She really wanted Elvis to sing it but not under those conditions
She already knew her value back then. But do you know whom she gave her song to just because she thought she could sing anything? Linda Ronstadt. Whitney's version is based on hers and never gets recognition for that. Go listen to it and you'll realize Whitney wasn't that of a genius. It's just an overproduced version of Linda's. Dolly contacted Whitney's producers to to tell them to add the last verse Linda had removed. Whitney's mother used to be Linda's backup singer so I bet Whitney had already had heard the song, contrary to that story that Kevin Costner came out with the song.
@@Caprizonica Aha😮 thnx for the information 👍
@@Caprizonica Whitney is a singer, but you're right; Dolly is one of the best songwriters in history. I don't recall a bad song by her. Dolly is a great singer also thought, 'Here I am' her duet with Sia early in the year, and 'higher love' by Whitney are my two fave songs for vocals this year.
As dolly says over and over she ain’t bothered if folk give Whitney the credit cos she (Miss Dolly Parton) gets the cash!
“My little song, my little simple song...”
One of the nicest and classiest women in entertainment.
Simple is best, ask the Beatles
Robin Alexander Ariana coming to dethrone the insects.
She may show off some assets but she has a modest and kind heart.
@@RavenousFallen TOO MUCH ASSETS
Love you
"you can give the credit, just send me the cash" LOL! Dolly knows the bottom line!
They can get the credit just give her the cash
Love that! Songwriters are the best.
Whitney got money off of it too
Andre Suston they both got a lot money off of that song
Wonder how much she gets from the song each year
I wished both whitney and dolly done a duet together on that song unfortunately we will never get that chance
With technology today, we could make that happen today
Joe... Your comment captured my imagination. That would certainly have been spectacular.
Someone could edit it in a video and upload it to UA-cam. Dolly is on UA-cam so she might even see it and like it
@@lvelez1999 You just don't get it.
Dolly offered that, but Whitney turned her down and she was rude about it too. Kinda sad.
This woman is pure class and gold!
Sweet Jesus Dolly will not risk $$$ by speaking up about Trumps child abuse...GOODBYE DOLLY=FOREVER $$$$$$
pure heart of gold more like it. I cant believe she doesnt have kids, but I guess God has his plans
Always has been!!!
She's nothing like wendy Williams
That is for sure. Wendy is not a classy person but a hater
@@sargonsrobot2552 you have some screws loose
Dolly always says “Whitney can have the credit, I’ll take the cash.” 😂😂😂
I loved it when Dolly did it, and I loved it when Whitney did it. Both were excellent versions. Sweet
NO DISRESPECT TO DOLLY BUT ITS NOT THE SAME SONG SIMILAR BUT NOT THE SAME IF YOU PLAYED THEM AT THE SAME TIME YOU WOULD HEAR AND FEAL THE DIFFERENCE.
akatheempress Me too!
@@curtisburr8717 Shut up
@@curtisburr8717 That is no disrespect to Dolly as Whitney ruined it and turned it to shit.
Yep Dolly's felt a bit more subdued , but both are beautiful.
Dolly tells the story the same way every time she a perfectionist Beautiful spirit an soul.
Sweet Jesus Dolly will not risk $$$ by speaking up about Trumps child abuse...GOODBYE DOLLY=FOREVER $$$$$$
The footage is not in this video but I think Dolly summed it up best when she said "When I sung it, I took my money to the bank. When Whitney sung it, I bought the bank."
"You can give her the credit; I just want the cash!"
LMAO! Dolly really did get rich off this 1 song!
She was rich before Whitney's cover, but her wealth just about doubled afterwards.
Whitney's version of I Will Always Love You is one of the biggest selling singles of all time.
Yes, Dolly is very smart.
She didn’t get rich off this one song. Let’s not forget the many movies she’s been in, the other songs she’s wrote and performed. She owns a theme park for God’s sake.
Brock Wayne but this is the biggest song of all time. Stop playing acting like it was loose change for dolly!
I remember seeing Dolly on the 'Tonight Show" saying she's not going to complain..."hell she made me $6 million"
Some artists get so salty when another singer has a bigger hit with their song, but Dolly has always spoken so respectfully about Whitney. Dolly has always been a class act, a wonderful lady inside and out. Love her.
Dolly is a class act in general but she also has the right attitude. Let the other have the credit but send the cash to her. Why get bothered by who is the bigger hit when the money is rolling in.
Exactly!😀👍
Most of the artists who do get salty don't have a songwriter or producer credit in the song they performed, so they don't get any money from the new version. It's easy to not be salty when the new version gives you a truckload of money in royalties.
Whitney was not a songwriter. Dolly is a songwriter, and it's her song. What Whitney was was a MASTER of musical interpretation, so it's as if she wrote every song she sung. So many of her famous songs were covers, including The Greatest Love of All, so it's silly to argue over who's song this is. Dolly and Whitney are both amazing talents, and that's all that matters.
Nophi Mitchell whitney can act though, i watch her movie and she has talent in acting. No wonder whitney’s stage act is great. But i agree both Dolly and Whitney are talented.
@@glorias4462 Whitney and Dolly are inseparable. Both, gorgeous, amazing, class acts.
Nophi Mitchell,
Wow and you're a black woman downgrading Whitney for Dolly
Nophi Mitchell Y’all are bugging. No one says this is Whitney’s Song. Everyone knows this is Dolly’s song, well I take that back, those are Dolly’s words, the creator made it Whitney’s song. It is a completely different song from Dolly’s. But Whitney doesn’t get credit for that either. The arranger does. Whitney sang the mess out of that song and arrangement but even Dolly acknowledges that. But the world knows this is Dolly’s written song. Whitney’s version paid Dolly so well that Dolly honestly doesn’t give a shit what you say about it as long as you cut Dolly the check🤣
A total class act, acknowledging the tremendous job Whitney did with her song!
now she is...back in the day dolly used to end her performances saying "Now sing THAT whitney houston!!"...i remember so well.....money changes things....
Melvin Moore it was obviously a joke lol. She says herself early on before the song came out that Whitney would make it huge if she sang it.
She's fabulous in and out www.stevepafford.com/dollywhitney/
Her story has never changed on when she first heard Whitney sing it. This lady is class all the way and thank Goodness she resisted signing it over to Elvis.
Her story has never changed because the TRUTH always remains the same. Only LIES change.
Right, Truth is easy to remember...lies changes over time
She's fabulous in and out www.stevepafford.com/dollywhitney/
Dolly is so humble and gracious. I've always loved that song. I've never had a problem separating the two songs. Both versions are uniquely touching and beautiful. Dolly's version is so heartbreaking and subtle, while Whitney's is so incredibly powerful. Both perfect in their own way, kind of like the two ladies.
Dolly is so humble
Shelton Logan well... Not too too humble... She said give me the cash! 😅🤣🤣🤣
@@SnoopCatts and rightly so.
@@SnoopCatts Humble, but not stupid. lol
Yea she is...just love her
Dolly is a national treasure!
I don't own a single Dolly Parton record, but you just can't help but like her. Love her movies.
I'm young and only now that she was in a lot of media but her philosophy and the way she carries herself are great.
Whitney made everyone in the world sing this song.
But Dolly wrote that song
I always have high respect for composers and writers of the song.
@Erna Bajric I agree! You can't talk rationally with "some" people...they are too full of hate & jealousy. I admire the way Dolly accomplished SO much on her own...and has written so many beautiful songs. She helped many people when the fire destroyed so many businesses & homes around Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge. She's a wonderful lady!
The only problem is whitney never mentioned or gave credit to dolly.
@@absisfabs873You are mistaken. Whitney often said before her live concerts that she wanted to thank Dolly Parton for writing such a beautiful song about love.
I had the same reaction when I first heard Whitney sing it.
I remember the first time I heard Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" when I was walking to work down on South Street Seaport in NYC & I remember I had to stop walking & really listen to her amazing version of Dolly Parton's great song. It just caught my attention Completely. The Acapella intro is spectacular. Whitney's soft smooth clear powerful vocals are stunning. Whitney Houston can sing anything & she has. Besides that song, Whitney took "Greatest Love of All" (another remake) to Number 1, "I'm Every Woman" to Number 1 & "I Believe In You & Me" to the Top 5 in the Pop & R&B charts. I truly wish Whitney Houston had been loved by someone important & special to her. Maybe she could've loved herself more & taken care of herself & her Gifts & all her Blessings. Cause Whitney Houston was truly an amazing talent. She will always be missed & loved.
I love dolly, she no dumb blonde 4:44. She owns all her masters and always has.
Betsy lol
There's a story that Elvis wanted to record I Will Always Love You but he always got 50% of the copyright of other people's songs and she turned him down which turned out to be a genius move because she made a killing with Whitney's cover. She's a smart business woman.
Yes, smart. Didn't get chumped like the Beatles, lol.
He basically just asked how did a black lady singing your song making you feel? I love her answer !
That was a revolting question.
Disgusting! I agree.
berryboy888 what? why is it revolting? He was just highlighting how they have different backgrounds and how she felt about her rendition. It’s ok to point out that Whitney Huston is black lol
They came from two different cultures, that's all
berryboy888 how was it revolting? He didn’t say anything offensive. Just pointing out their different backgrounds.
When they raised her casket and I Will Always Love You played...I couldn't stop crying...Dolly is spot on
tipofmytongue1024 same here. Between Kevin Costner’s eulogy and the casket being lifted I balled my eyes out!
Cried through the whole thing - when they came in singing “Whitney...Whitney...Whitney,” I started crying. When they lifted her casket and Sissy broke down... it took me out! 💔
tipofmytongue1024
Saddest thing ever, I watch it on occasion because it was such a beautiful exit to a tragic ending.
That song was the defining moment of Whitney’s career.
The world will always remember her greatness through that song.
She will be missed forever
Tanya Hopper
It was painful to watch.
I tear up just thinking about it
Thank God Dolly never gave her songs away.
Sweet Jesus Dolly will not risk $$$ by speaking up about Trumps child abuse...GOODBYE DOLLY=FOREVER $$$$$$
She doesn't do politics.
Elvis wanted to record I Will Always Love You, but wanted 50%of the publication rights and royalties and Dolly didn't want to give away any rights to her sing and said no.
@@sargonsrobot2552 must we bring Trump into this
I love to hear both ladies sing it. 😍
Same here, they both sing it very good but each have their own way of singing it since one is Country and the other is R&B
"If Whitney does it, it could be a big record..." understatement of the century..
Dolly is so humble.she’s so sweet!😍😍😍
Dolly Parton is now one of my role models. I can only hope to be as fucking sweet, classy and humble as she.
She's the best!

"If Whitney does sing it then I think it COULD be big enough". Gurl. You knew nothing of what was lying ahead of you. That cover became the BEST-SELLING SINGLE BY A FEMALE ARTIST.
Slender Man she took it to the next level
Derrick Belmar: She took it to the ultimate level.
That damn song solidified her as a ICON!!!!!!!!!!!!
Learn your history. Miss Dolly is a Singer/Songwriter/Musician and Producer! You don't get ANYMORE of an Artist...than that! Thanks and good day. Don't you dare disrespect Miss Dolly like that. How dare you? Hell she was in the business doing all of her thing before Whitney was damn near born.
Arikm7 who cares enough to read all that? I doubt anyone.
I just love Dolly. Sweetest face you ever could see. I informally met her once as a young African American college kid in NYC. My auntie got me a job as a doorman in this swanky building on 5th Ave and guess who lived part-time in that building. Ms Pardon heard my southern Ascent and took the time to say hi to me. I was a fan from the word hello.
Everyone forgets dolly wrote the song but Whitney Houston made it an iconic song
NO! It was ICONIC years before Whitney did it! She did it differently. Dolly sang a LOVE song. Whitney sang a SHOW piece! ALL GREAT!! ALSO, NO ONE FORGETS WHO WROTE THIS SONG!
It was not iconic before Whitney did it. Maybe in the world of country music but not worldwide.
Angel Ruset: Whitney made it a global sensation. Prior to WH i think the song was only known to Whites in country music community.
whitney made that song iconic
Nobody ever "forgets" Dolly wrote the song. A lot of young people may not know that Dolly wrote it, but it has never been a secret or anything that anybody forgot. Dolly's renditions were successful, but Whitney's singing-- along with David Foster's production-- made the song into the ultimate global phenomenon.
She seems like one of the loveliest people in Hollywood. I would be so happy to hear my song covered with such passion 💜

I met her cousin in Alabama he is such a sweet man
“ that’s fine, you can give her the credit and i just want the Ca$h. “ -- Dolly Parton
Who else is here in July 2019... for Dolly Parton 👏👏 as well as in forever loving memory Whitney Houston 🌹🌹
The fact Whitney took that simple song and made it into something HUGE
Whitney made you rich girl and made that song a LEGENDARY SONG WORLDWIDE! And also made you relevant again. Thanks for acknowledging it. Like Dolly said numerous times, WH took the song to a level she could never have herself.
Whitney was a saddened soul. A great talent. But she didn't make Dolly rich, Dolly got rich on her own talent, and not being a coke head.
Dolly was one of the richest people in country music well before Houston recorded the song.
How does such a voice reside in a human ?
Whitney Houston the greatest singer of all time
Dolly Parton the sweetest woman of all time

I'm a huuuuuuuge Whitney fan, and I adore Dolly Parton, they don't make 'm classier than her. Such a sweetheart too!
That song never fails to make me cry like a baby
Anybody else dream of a duet with them performing this. I’m just glad they shared this.
Whitney put her stamp on two songs that will never outshine her readings. "The National Anthem" and "I Will Always Love You".
Miss Whitney so much! She was a beautiful person and singer.
When I heard Whitney sing the song, I was floored and in awe of her vocals. It truly was a thing of beauty and a marvelous rendition. But when I first heard Dolly sing it, I cried. That's the biggest difference to me.
yes
Yep
Thank you ma'am for writing that beautiful song!!
Only one person a generation is gifted with the unmatched talent to write the song, "I Will Always Love You" and of course the World knows that artist writer is the unique phenomenon, Ms. Dolly Parton... Thank goodness...
Dolly took that money to the bank when she sang it. When Whitney sang it, she bought the bank.
Dolly is such an angel. Two talented queens 🙌🏽✨
I remember when Dolly shared her heart through this song in the early ‘70s and I was SO DEEPLY MOVED back then, and I cried. When Whitney made it a huge hit again in The Bodygaurd I fell in love with the song again. Whitney was such a wonderful singer! I saw Dolly on stage once in a rather intimate venue and I will tell you that she is one sincere and big hearted person!!! THAT’S what I experienced when Dolly sang in that concert and when she sang “I Will Always Love You” you just KNEW that that was written fron deep down in her most honest and brilliant soul. That’s why I cry; because it is that artistic connection with our humanity that is what both Dolly and Whitney remind me, and US all, of!
Dolly has a great attitude why she lives so long.dolly happy to be getting those checks.don't blame her.

Dolly Parton is a class act Diva... seriously... I love Whitney Houston, but she was a diva all about her own recognition... Dolly has no problem sharing and appreciating other women’s gifts... love Dolly...
Dolly's amazing as a songwriter and vocalist. I admire her modesty. She acknowledges Whitney nailed the song. Which she did.
Hhh
She is the epitome of graciousness… I wonder if she is aware of her own stature being a legend herself. I will wish you all the best Dolly.
Pure grace and humility. For that, Dolly, we will always love you.
There's only one Dolly. What a gal! Just love her!
Dolly is such a nice lady that she can answer the same question over and over and over over decades and not annoyed.
To me Whitney’s rendition was absolutely groundbreaking and so strong, but Dolly’s was so genuine and vulnerable.
She is the most gracious and lovely artist around today. Love her soul.

I love both versions. Both are masterpieces. Whitney's though is epic. A home run. No denying that.

Two of my favourite female singers. Legends. 💜❤️Dolly Parton is such a sweetheart. 😘
Dolly is so extremely gracious, loving, Christian and ONE SMART business lady who shares her wealth with many through her various charities. I have always loved Dolly. I’ve never been a fan of her music or her voice for years, but slowly her personality combined with her mega song writing talents pulled me in. That voice, her tiny little body and that HUGE HEART. My two favorite divas. Classy Ladies. Miss Whitney is missed. Voice of an angel and Dolly my hero.
Dolly sang it so beautifully with such great emotion. But Whitney has such amazing range and control for the song.
I love Dolly Parton, she just has the most amazing soul, and the way she spoke so well of Whitney. A lot of artists don't like when younger singers sing their songs, even if they do make a lot of money from it.
I just love Dolly Parton. Every time I hear her in any interview, I fall in love all over again. She just seems so decent.

Dolly Parton is a gracious human being and a living legend!
Am I the only one with tears😪 in my eyes on this journey down memory lane
One thing I will say about Dolly, is that not only is she still stunning, but she doesn't lie! In Every interview, her responses have been consistent and unchanged. Like Judge Judy says, if you don't lie, you don't have to have a good memory!
Legends both. Dolly is such a sweetheart.
Dolly is a real star and comes across as a lovely person. Love her.
Love both versions.
Dolly is so great❣️
Pure class, as usual, by Dolly. She gives credit where due (Whitney sang it beautifully and powerfully) and took credit gracefully. ("I wrote that song 18 years ago")
Dolly is a class act. Whitney re-recording her song, made her millions.
Dolly is such a remarkably humble and kind woman, you can really see how proud and impressed she was with Whitney's version of it. You don't see this much class from a lot of performers these days.
Nice. Thank you for sharing.
I am literally crying right now , both of you guys are legends 🤞🏽❤️
I love how she admired Whitney and her talent, as well as her take on her song, it seems like there was a genuine respect there.
We will always love you Dolly and we will always love Whitney Houston!!
One of the greatest songwriters ever. She wrote I will Always love you and Jolene in one evening. Now - that's good! Not only extremely talented, but also a very, very shrewed business woman. She once said: "I don t mind when they call me a dumb blonde, because I know that I am not dumb and I am certainly not blonde."I like her. And she is a decent woman.
What a humble, sweet woman!!!
I still prefer the original, but Whitney's voice always blows me away to the other side of the Milky Way Galaxy!
Very fair enough.
Very fair enough.
Me too. Whitney's version is an epic production but Dolly's original, to me, has far more feeling & emotion to it.
I love the tenderness in Dolly's version and the majesty that Whitney brought to it. We are spoiled to have so many great artists enriching our lives.
I think most people will agree wth you. I love how when Ms. Parton sings the song, it's more subtle and has that delicious country flavor. Whitney is my absolute fave but Dolly is a VERY close second and SUCH a class act. Each woman sang this song while being true to themselves.
It's more then a simple song, It helped me more then words can express!
I love Dolly...she just always seems so genuine
I never really watched or listened to Dolly Parton but her bubbly humble personality is infectious.. I understand why people love her now
Dolly is such a down to earth and genuine person. Too bad more people aren’t like her. This world would be a much better place.
UNBELIEVABLE that people will argue and badmouth 2 ICONS in the world of entertainment. My goodness people, get a grip. 2 very beautiful people .... let it go ... and show some respect .... please.
I love Dolly!
This is so sweet.
Dolly is truly a class act!
i have very personal respect for both dolly and whitney and i think dolly is so gracious to give the magnificent whitney so much credit and feel competitive with her.that shows the amount of class dolly has and speaks well for her as a person.
👍👍👍
Dolly wrote the song just writing a song is so hard song writers deserve so much more credit just like my favorite singer says I'm a song writer first a singer second Stevie nicks by the way I love dolly and Whitney so much
It took Two supreme geniuses to make that song that song... They both will live forever.
