According to the article on Time Out, they polled 20,000 "city dwellers" and local experts to determine the 51 coolest neighborhoods across the planet. Guess which one got the top spot? Spoiler alert!! It's Colonia Americana in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
It was just this year that I lived in Colonia Americana for 5 months, so I thought it would be fun to travel from my current home in Ajijic back to Guadalajara and showcase what makes this 'hood so awesome. Hint, hint: Instagram-worthy restaurants with delicious food, historic architecture, art, events, nature, cultural aspects, overall energy, and more!
Also in this Guadalajara Mexico vlog I interviewed locals to see what they think about Colonia Americana getting this designation. Do they love it? Hate it? Let's find out!

Hi Maddie! Great video and yes loved the interview part. It's interesting to hear what the locals have to say.
Yes, they are very interesting, it was good to see that some in Mexico feel a bit put off by having "gringos" invade their spaces as we see that in the US as well, the increases in prices due to this is unfortunate for the locals who have been their for their lives.
Awesome video Stay Gorgeous and keep smiling Amazing 👏
@@hannahanderson4305 We have that in my city as well. Lots of displacement, high rents, and evictions by landlords just to get older tenants out. If the tenants don't leave willingly, they evoke the Ellis Act (it is a work around and allows the landlord to claim they are moving family members in the units), then they kick tenants out, or they will go "gangster" and illegally harass or refuse services to tenants so they are forced to move out way outside of the City Limits. That started around 1990s here... tons of displacement of long time families and communities were ruined. So now rents here are $4000 for a tiny studio in luxury apartments or the older units are around that same price as well. Insane displacement and sadness. Our communities lost thousands of artists and low wage workers and long time families.
Foreigners are totally afecting the locals. Costs are going up, and staring being more afortable just for outsiders. I'm mexicana, and I've being leaving in tjis neighborhood the last 12 Years, and rent Is almost 200% up. Please stop making publicity to the city and to the neighborhood.. Please.!!!.
As a Mexican who has traveled extensively throughout the country I can tell you Americana is no doubt one of the coolest neighborhoods in the country, along with Condesa.
What can be worrying is that the entire metro area of Guadalajara could see the same “domino” effect Mexico City had starting about 15 years ago when prices started going up like crazy in Condesa, then Roma and so on, making it almost impossible for many Mexicans nowadays to rent anything in Central Mexico City. Let’s hope things stay sane over there!
@Merican Modi Actually no, it was a very low-income area for many decades, especially after the 1985 earthquake, gentrification began around 2000-2004 in those areas, forcing people to move further east or outside the city only recently. It isn’t true for many cities in Mexico yet: Monterrey, Querétaro and Mérida are just a few examples where the suburbs are still more expensive (San Pedro, Juriquilla).
It's happening all over the world.
In Canada I'm being bought out cuz I can't afford it anymore.
@@angelab4652 Of course, but it’s different in a country like Mexico, France, Argentina or the UK that have a Primate City. The effects are 10x.
Also, I believe salaries at least have stayed steady in Canada, here they’ve gone down in the last 20 years while housing in Mexico City has gone up more than 230% in the last 15 years! It’s insane.
La Condesa is actually three colonias: la Colonia Condesa, la Colonia Hipódromo y la Colonia Hipódromo Condesa.
I lived in one of them more than 20 years ago before the boom. Wouldn't live there now. I'd now prefer la Santa Maria la Ribera 😉
@@chacmool2581 Yes, I know there are 3 colonias that make up the one Condesa “district”, but gentrification is advancing so rapidly that the whole Condesa-Roma-Escandon-San Miguel Chapultepec-Juarez-San Rafael-Santa María la Ribera “area” just priced out 95% of Mexico City’s population. And I’m sure you can add both Polanco and most of Benito Juárez borough, basically all of central Mexico City. Also, both San Rafael and S. María la Ribera are still quite dangerous at night. They just seem “attractive” because the RE Market pushers want it to make it look like they are, and there are still lots of gangs just nearby in Tepito, etc. I would definitely NOT recommend those two (at the very least).
Maddie, the gentleman you guys interviewed at 10:31 is Sergio Garval, he's an international artist (painter). I'm from Guadalajara and been living in the Dallas TX for almost 20 years. I went to art school in Guadalajara 20 years ago and even back then Sergio was a big name. Funny... here I am watching your Guadalajara videos nostalgically seeing my home town and all the sudden I see his face and I get all excited hahaha
Hey, I’m traveling to Guadalajara soon and I’ve been watching videos and reading articles because I want to have fun but also be safe and respectful. You have any tips?
I’m from Guadalajara and I visit from the U.S at least 6-7 times a year and when I see videos like this I miss it so much regardless of how many times I go! Thank you for this Maddie ♥️
This is where I was hanging in Guadalajara right before the pandemic. It is incredible. Thanks Maddie. Love what you are doing! Don't feel bad about your anxiety. We all have our moments.
I don't think we can assume they are xenophobic. Gentrification is an issue that financially impacts local residents. Prices increase and natives are priced out. That's a real thing that is happening not just in Guadalajara but here in America also.
As someone who has suffered panic attacks myself, I feel for you Maddie. Your friend Moni (sp?)seems like such a fun loving light hearted spirit. The kind of friend few of us are lucky to have. Great video!!!
Thank you so much for this Awesome share Maddie! Looks like you enjoyed your time with friends. Please continue to take care of You so we can continue to enjoy your adventures 🤗😊
Seeing my GDL friends again was long overdue! It was a blast for sure 🥰
Thank you Maddie, for sharing about this area of Mexico. As for your anxiety attack, I'm so sorry you are going through this. At the risk of sounding like "medical advice", I have used EMDR in therapy & it is amazing for healing trauma. REALLY healing it.
Just sharing as an option. You do whats right for you!! Thank you for being vulnerable & sharing your challenges, as well as your joys. It takes guts & i totally respect that. You are quite brave. ❤ from Colorado.
I agree with with what the interviewee said about the Coolest Neighborhood in the world being a "real estate tactic" to raise prices, but it's also amazing how Mexico has made it to the top or #1 in Happiest people in the world, Best city/state in the world to travel to (oaxaca & SMA), Best city to retire (SMA), Safest city in North America or all of America (Merida), at least at some point or in several consecutive years in a row.
what?... I would fact check happiest place in the world...for whom?
Damn lies!
@@heatherwhittaker3946mentally.. we are. We, Mexicans, for the most part do not believe in happiness as a concept to achieve.....like most westerners do.. We know happiness is a chimera....Therefore we tend to accept life as it comes...and so we celebrate life in all its aspects. We dont DEMAND to be happy. We dont want to be happy all the time...whch is why we celebrate Death as well. We act as kids... playing the game of life for the sake of playing and not to be happy... and this mon amie.... makes us one of the happiest countries in this miserable planet. Lol
@@heatherwhittaker3946 I heard Denmark is the happiest place in the world.
Real estate tactic? I’m not so sure. That area of guadalajara has always been one of the most popular places in the city proper. I don’t think it needs any help developing or even having awareness spread about it. It’s been the most sought after place for foreigners since forever,
Great video and super informative. Loved you asking locals their opinions. When living here (México) it's important to get prospectives from the locals. Sad you had to deal with a panic attack. They are horrible but I know you will be able to guide yourself through them. Keep up the fantastic content.
Nice Video. I did read the article regarding the #1 city. I was surprised to see that, I’m glad you went out to show us viewers the city and what it has to offer.
I love your videos ❤
You do such a good job conveying the information and flavor of this phenomenal neighborhood! Gracias 😊
Great video, Maddie! I really enjoyed it. Thanks for showing us this fabulous neighborhood! Stay safe! 💖
Thank you for this video! I hope you find calmness and are able to explore and share more of the city ❤
Another very informative video. Love the way you included your friends and their observations.
Absolutely top notch content Maddie! ❤️ You are at the top of your game….really love seeing you reach your potential! ❤️ Your confidence is inspiring! 👍👍👍
This!!
You look really wonderful and relaxed. I love your videos! You explain so much about Mexico that makes me want to go there. Sometimes Maddie as you know one door closes another one opens to a wonderful world of exploration and happiness that you deserve!
Maddie thanks for your videos!!! I'm so sorry about your anxiety 😔 please have lots of fun now that your young and have energy.
The interviews with the locals were enlightening. Better, really educational, content than most travel bloggers. If you can sustain this it might really catch on. Hope you will.
Excellent, informative video. I spent a few months in various parts of Guadalajara in the 80's and 90's, but haven't been back in the last 20 years. I'm planning to return there for a 2-4 month stay this winter and this vlog post is part of my research on where to stay. I appreciate your positive and informed videos, Maddie.
Thanks for sharing Maddie, I'll be there next month for 20 days, I can't wait!!!
Maddy, this is one of my favorite videos from your channel, good job
Loving your channel maddie your vlogs are top notch and asking local peoples opinion just shows your class and willingness to learn well done girl all our love from Ireland 🇮🇪🤘
My favorite video in your recent series..you expressed your jubilant spirit and the exuberance I've been missing. Perhaps because Guad is a fave of mine also? Keep up the good vibes and yeah panic attacks are no fun.
Such a compliment, thank you!
Haven't been online much for the past few months. I am finally catching up with you. OH my gosh, Maddie, you have definitely excelled since moving on to being you! I truly enjoyed this video. Keep up the good work.
Gentrification is complicated, but it's important to ask the locals how they feel about it. Hear their voice, directly. You might not like what you hear, but that doesn't mean their view is wrong. What might be great for one person, may be bad for another person. It's important to see/hear both sides of this topic. I hope you continue to ask these questions and hear the voice of the locals and understand how certain changes are affecting them.
Mexican here, I was born in Guadalajara and I still live here and I live from few minutes from that neighborhood ( 5 minutes by bus concretely) and I'm absolutely against gentrificacion culture you USA people bring from the States for an American is difficult to get a conclusion but from a Mexican for me is not, so I'm against to that gentrificacion.
For fvck sake, my grandparents used to live in Providencia, for absolutely no reason a year later after we sell their house back in 2017 the prices got WILD after that. (3.4M the house, now it probably costs 7M wtf).
Gentrification is harmful.
@@gustavoperez5480 I am from the U.S.A I have family in Mex and I am against it as well!
@@intheuniversekey well, thanks.
@Merican Modi I don't know if you're aware but most people in Mexico are poor or middle class.
It's not just what people think, it's a real problem. Rents and house prices are rising, it is known that it rises a lot in neighborhoods like Colonia Americana, which is a neighborhood for wealthier people, but the problem is that these prices reach other neighborhoods as well, because foreigners buy them.
In the future it is possible that if you are not from the upper class you will never be able to buy a house being Mexican and that is worrying because middle class people today have the possibility of buying their house, in the future they may not .
I'm not saying it's the foreigners' fault, I'm glad that people want to live in Mexico, things like this happen in all countries, when there is a greater number of foreigners in a country different situations appear that affect the locals and in this case the The Mexican government must solve it in some way so that we can live together and maintain economic stability, even so, while the solution is being sought, the problem is still there.
From the way you wrote the comment, it shows that you don't care how things affect other people. Not all people are lucky enough to have your privileges and your living conditions, there are people who are born in very negative environments in which it is very difficult to achieve better living conditions.
I usually stay in Americana when I visit Guadalajara. I love the vibe there and have many favorite spots. I thought the comments about gentrification were very thoughtful. As for your anxiety attack, I am sorry that happened, but I think it is healthy that you can share it. Keep up the great videos, Maddie. And above all be as happy as you can❤
Maddie you look better than ever! Wow
Thank you 😊
She sure does!! Her profile pic on the thumbnail......wow!!
Another great V/log , Maddie. That food is Unbelievably good. Great watch.
I always look forward to these videos regardless of topic. I enjoy the vibe, style, humor and insight you always bring Maddie!
Great job on this video, you gave a good perspective of this area 👍👍👍 Loving this makeup look Maddie.
Great video, Maddie! For me it was particularly interesting because I've been to most of the places you went, although not the restaurants. I road the metro several times. I can't remember the specific part of the city but we wandered around tons and tons of market stalls, and also went to a huge area of streets that were all closed to traffic. I even remember shooting a video of their funky walk signals on the traffic lights. I hesitate to offend you on this one, but you know I've always said how cute you are. The less makeup you wear the cuter you are because you are a natural beauty. As probably your oldest fan, in years, I'm also glad to see the nose ring is gone in this video. Love ya!
I'm really liking your content lately, great job Maddie! 👏
Thanks Melissa!
I keep on being amazed by the great video concepts you have 🙈
Interviews with locals will explain much & are truly appreciated. Different gens are worth listening too as well. Let’s face it, they frequently -not always- have the power & control of their region. Like that your videos are really developing in content. Gracias, Maddie.
Great video; I loved the part where you interviewed the locals. it gave a deeper view into the culture of the local people in the area. Once again great video.
Great episode Maddie. Good to see you’re doing it.
This is the content I signed up for! Thank you !!
thanks Maddie, that was really interesting and informative
Nice video maddie been following ur videos for a long time ...always enjoy them...
Why is it when the opposite happens the cities and neighborhoods get worse?
Keep going Maddie! We love watching you! Marie
How crazy you are one of the reasons I am in Mexico by myself now and I am going to Colonial Americana today! amazing coincidence!
Keep improving your Spanish, it WILL pay off.
Thanks to you, I always have a new trip.✨ Thank you for the great video 👍
You packed plenty into this video without the missed day. I enjoyed the interviews with the locals.
This was a wonderful super entertaining video! So much to see and the food....Yum!!! Elvis loved all the dog content.
hey maddie! ive been keepin up-to-date with your vids, keep doin what you gotta do!!
I also had some difficulty catching an Uber near the old bus station, and our driver told us it is because the taxi drivers in that area threaten Uber drivers. Walking a couple blocks away from the station to a more inconspicuous place to be picked up helps. Similar to catching an Uber at the airport, where Uber technically isn’t allowed but if you walk past the Oxxo where the taxis and cops aren’t monitoring so closely they will feel more comfortable picking you up. Good advice at any Mexican airport.
Good to know, thanks!
Maddie, you are doing great at story-telling. Your videos are so fun with music. You can feel the happiness. I also think that the day you adopt a dog will be the happiest day of your life!
Great video. I've living in Guadalajara's Metropolitan Area for around 6 years now and I did not really know too much about all the advantages of living in that area of the city. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.
Enjoyed touring Guadalajara with you, many ways to get around.. when your friend mentioned " french" influence I thought of course with the name "Saint Malo.. we have a small community in our province named exactly that. 😃
Hope your anxiety has subsided 🙁
Take care...
Such a good video today! Thanks.
Great vid. I love that you tackle the implications of money flowing into these areas.
Never rode the metro in Mexico! But I stayed in Colonia Americana a couple of times and enjoyed exploring it. It's definitely one of the most interesting neighborhoods of Guadalajara. Thanks for the great video, Maddie. Made me miss Guadalajara
Came to show my support. Thanks for sharing. Much love.
Love your energy. Your videos are great! So glad your channel is growing so fast.
Thank you so much Janice!!
You look healthy and happy. Keep taking care of yourself. Good video.
Thanks for the insightful presentation about this little gem of barrio. In general it seems very liveable and even more enjoyable.
Maddie- stay safe and well-love your videos !
Really nice tour and opinions of the city and it's new ranking. As a result of the "best" rank, gentrification will eventually ramp up which is probably not all that great for the locals. Nice to see Emma again (and he wasn't on his phone, lol)! Looked like you had a good time, and we don't mind that you finished the video the next day.
You’re doing so great … enjoy your videos tons 😊
Thanks for your suggestion! Will be staying in Ajijic and going to this spot for a Sunday and overnight until our bus trip back to Ajijic on Monday. Can't wait for January to get here!!!
Love you vlogs, keep up the good work❤👍✔

Sending you huge hugs, I think we all get anxious from time to time. It is always a pleasure to see your videos. Un abrazo. 🤗
Thanks so much Rosalba! I appreciate you watching to the end 😊

Maddie = Vibrant, entertaining, well spoken, engaging. You are clearly doing well, thriving and smiling. Oh, and I also enjoy 'meeting' your friends. Keep doing you, Maddie. Whatever you are doing, these day, keep doing it. It looks good on you.
Im honestly worried about gentrification, specially after reading how it affected cities like Atlanta or San Francisco. What makes cities special like Guadalajara or CDMX is the culture, the people, and some of those people dont have money... if you take that and just replace it with hipster restaurants with overpriced chilaquiles and americanized "mexican stores", then the culture is gone, and now its basically a caricature. Are you visiting mexico or a filtered idea of it?, think about it.
The best mexican food its not in expensive restaurants, thats a fact, and after living in Guadalajara for 6 years i can tell you that "Colonia Americana" is the not the coolest part of Guadalajara, let alone the world. Theres other places that are more beautiful, and safer, but i wont tell you before you gentrified it too.
Exactly. I don't like hipsters or their stupid restaurants. They f*** everything up.
Hater
Great videos Maddie, estás bienvenida en Guadalajara. Te queremos mucho por mostrando tu cariño a la ciudad. Keep up the good work.

Nice to see your doing good, been in yoir channels since 3 years ago. Greetings from Northern Mexico.
What a great video and no better way to end it but with your traditional bell Gong! 😊I had my bike stolen in Mazatlan last year,it was locked in front of my Airbnb. The thief broke the lock. I rented it from the Airbnb host who made me pay him 3000 Pesos ( even though the bike was not even worth 1000!) . Now I am really paranoid of even taking my phone out to take pictures when in public. There are some pretty desperate people in the world. Thanks for this upload Maddie, I appreciate your hard work. 😊 PS sorry about the panic attack 💗
I wouldn't be surprised if the AirBnB host had a friend help out with the "theft", imagine how much extra money that adds up to if the rental bike gets stolen on a regular basis. Just need to supply their friend with good bolt cutters.
@@starsparkle999 this is exactly what all my friends and family were saying..it’s sad some people can be so dishonest like that. The bike was pure junk and they made me pay 5 times the price of it. I left that Airbnb early because I suspected it was staged and I was appalled!
You do a great job especially in this video ❤❤❤❤
Wow you would you believe I've walked through Americana several times, and even know the benches where that couple was interviewed, and where that green cafe is, off the side from Avenida La Paz, but never got to see the inside until now. Cool, thanks Maddie.

Maddie....great video !!!
Enjoyed your clip .
The history is amazing the Colonia Americana was where the wealthiest people lived in the Colonial period and the mansions in that time were so amazing, the street with carriages going down what is now avenida Vallarta is mindblowing. It's a shame the state of a lot of those houses now but glad the more beautiful ones are still up
It didn't exist at the colonial period.
Colonia Americana is a relatively recent neighborhood. It was laid out in the late 1800s, and built up in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most of the mansions imitate European architecture. Until the early 20th century, Guadalajara was very small, surrounded by farms and fields. Most of the city is new. The old parts of town are all clustered close to the San Juan de Dios River - which is still there, but which now runs beneath Calzada Independencia, one of the main streets of the city.
17:52 I used to live a block away from here, 14 years ago (omg I’m old now). I rented a studio for 4 years for $3,500 pesos ($220~ USD) monthly. My window had a view of Templo Expiatorio (the gothic church) until construction of THAT BUILDING started lol, blocking my amazing view. I think those apartments used to cost around $15,000 MXN / Month, although don’t quote me on that, it should be way more expensive now.
I don’t have a lot of travel experience (like only major cities in Europe and US), but I will say: La Americana will always have a place deep in my heart. ❤
Great video Maddie! I'm so sorry you had a panic attack 🥺 I don't wish them on anyone.
Thanks Jason! Hope it doesn’t happen again anytime soon 😝
Between Lake Chapala and Guadalajara there are so many nooks and crannies that you'll be doing videos for years to come. Keep up the good work. Anxiety is a beast. Find exercises that you can do right then and then and I'll bet you'll overcome it. You're not alone.
Maddie you rock!👍🏻
I was having a good time watching your video Maddie, but I felt so sad to know that you got in that way because of Mexico's lack of security. It´s terrible to know that Mexico has been in this awful situation.
I hope you are better now and I'll be waiting for your next video with a lot of happiness. See you soon.
Sorry I'm not sure I totally understand your comment. I got in what way because of Mexico's security?
Maddie tu puedes "agringarnos" todo lo que quieras
Aww muchas gracias 💛😊
@@MaddieGold I noticed the one couple you interviewed seemed very angry about the fact that things are becoming "white" and "gringo-ized" and shortly after that your guy friend of the couple who are your friends, focused a lot on the architecture and became quite animated. I felt like he was trying to compensate for the prejudice comments of that previous couple. I have experienced that prejudice myself from Latinos here in northern California where I live, even up in the mountains where they are a minority. I personally like hanging out with Latinos, but it does hurt me to to feel the sting of some of them being quite prejudice.
I lived in Japan back in the 80's and as a blue eyed blonde haired young woman, sometimes I got especially nice treatment, other times, the opposite. I guess it's like that anytime you are in another country. Some like "foreigners", some don't.

Good to hear local views.
Thanks, Maddie, for a thoughtful and enlightening video. Keep up the good fight to work through that dang anxiety! I suffered with that at 19. It was awful. I could barely leave my room for a month. But then, when I would feel it coming on, I would *force myself to stop* by getting really mad at myself, cursing and yelling out loud to stop it, etc., and really took control of myself (that sounds a bit nuts now that I write this 😮🤪, but IT WORKED.) I stopped having them!! Worth a try, dear girl. Good luck! ♥️
Sorry to hear you went through that! Sounds like an interesting tactic though! If I'm in a private place, I'll have to try that out....can't imagine a public temper tantrum at myself would be received too well by bystanders haha
So true! Hahaha I really hope it works for you. It was a lifesaver for me! An inner monologue might work, too. I just happened to be sequestered when the attacks occurred. Gawd awful things but you can beat ‘em.
@@MaddieGold in a PUBLIC situation I would recommend EFT Tapping or the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise .
