Bill, from one father to another, from the outside looking in, you have more than likely said your piece to your boys especially Billy. If you say something that proves your point, the best thing I've found is sometimes quietly be supportive and let him figure out on his own that he does need you (he does). I'm super afraid that his animosity will quietly keep growing. I advise to just help when he asks, but let him realize on his own.. I'm a huge fan of you both! We both know how being young and stubborn, like dad, will cause them to push away for spite. He WILL come around. I'm afraid it will take longer this time if you push. He watches your videos too. Stay strong, this will pass. I'm a huge fan of yours. I recognize the signs of this tension. I always look forward to your videos.

We all made mistakes in the past and learned from it. Its how knowledge comes to be. Some one can teach you how to bolt it togeather but it takes someone that's been there to teach you why it blew up! In racing everybody fails. It's what knowledge you take from it that counts. @@David-uu1oj hey David, what Corvair do you have buddy? I had a 63 convertible with original paint, 4 speed, bout 100% completely original except for the top. There wasn’t a tiny spec of rust anywhere on the sheet metal, the floors, trunk, anywhere!! It was white, and that old lacquer paint was thin and faded and I was looking forward to painting her but that was at a time when my wife had a great job offer to go from gods country of Colorado to The University of North Carolina Hospital & Clinics and they had been trying to recruit her for a number of years for their burn unit so we decided that the winters were probly much warmer and they offered her a an offer we couldn’t pass up but the issue came when we moved and being that far away, we had to make the move in one shot but I had 6 vehicles. I ended up leaving my Corvair and a 16’ Ryder moving truck I had at a buddies house and he had a soot in his garage where he could keep the Corvair and my plan was to fly out some time and load the Corvair into the back of the truck somehow and drive them back together but before I could get to that point they got stolen and I doubt I’ll ever be able to find another all original Corvair in that hood a shape!! God I miss that car!! I wish you the best of luck on yours brother and wish I was close to ya to help ya with your body and paint work on it. I’ve been painting for over forty years and could probably teach ya a few good lessons but it’s not tough at all and there are some excellent resources on line you can learn from as well. Well you got other guys doing 70 passes on their truck without pulling the motor out. I just hate to see them struggling and spending all that money and time. I think it's time to get a built motor that's done from a known shop. It’s a very complex situation between a father and son who has become a young man.. you want to correct his mistakes before he makes them as any good father would and he wants to prove he can do it on his own without making mistakes as any up and coming man wants to prove himself as being able to handle anything… it’s tough it really is… it’s tough for you to have to sit back a watch him take a fall knowing it’s about to happen… and it’s tough on him to be humiliated by failing yet again… these times will pass… y’all both love each other… you may just have to adapt and maybe adjust the way you approach him… approach him as you would another man and not as your son… and he needs learn that you’re not trying to run his show you’re just trying to steer him right. It’ll all work out

Bill you said it. It's a balance. It's easy to get distracted in the day we live. You will not find a truly successful person who is undisciplined. The old saying... the bigger the pond, the bigger the ripples. Y'all are treading new territory. Some times it boils down to, what do you really want??? To be a racecar driver, fabricator, business man, UA-cam celebrity. After awhile it becomes about delegating responsibilities if you are not able to handle everything. I wish you and your family the very best. By the way I am 56 years old. This past June 27 we laid my father to rest. He was 85, It all started with covid. Me and my father were like oil and water. I'm not sure exactly why but I miss him very much. I stumbled on a young blond headed gentleman with a laptop on top of an ole S-10 a few years ago. I've watched every since. I have never made a pass down the strip. But I love hotrods and honest hard working people with integrity and morals. God Bless!

Bill, as a grouchy ole man I agree with you on teaching the next generation. I'm a trucker that loves drag racing. When I was training new drivers in the old days, They would come out of those schools knowing everything there was until I tell them, "show me what you know." That applies to raising children in this day and age. I remember growing up without a father to guide me. your sons are blessed to have a strong handed Dad in their life. I had my grandfathers, but they don't replace having that father and son bonding. For those that feel you are tough on your young men, screw them. These are the young men you have to be accountable for in the end. Stay the course and fight on. This is what Real Dads do to raise the next generation stronger. Tough love is allowing your children to make mistakes and guiding them to make better choices. One day, they will remember the lessons learned, when you stepped back to allow them to venture out. Although you only see my post, I salute the way you're teaching Billy and Tommy. Have great weekend down there and much love to you all. I have to get use to the new name. Until next time, stay warm too.

I’ve built at least fifteen engines and my dad supervised and taught me a lot of tricks on at least 10 of them. He was meticulous about cleanliness and making sure clearances were perfect. He worked 6-7 days a week as a mechanic on a strip mine and still found the time to do a back half and roll cage on my 63 Nova when I was 17. I didn’t truly appreciate the sacrifices he made until I was about Billy’s age. Hopefully his attitude and attention to detail will come around too.

I had to gringe a little when the engine quit after that last race, just from the sound of trying to restart, Billy should have realized it was blown and not run it again. That was hard to watch lol! Real happy for you guys it wasn't worse and I think Billy has a lot to learn on different standpoints. I think Billy is a very bright young man and will definitely learn about decisions having consequences with time, we all pretty much do. Both him and Tommy are damn good drivers the last video tells it all!

As a former diesel mechanic I learned many years ago to attach myself to the "old guy" in the shop because that's where the real education of being a mechanic came from. Your break-down of the engine was clear and concise and hopefully people learned how to properly tear down an engine, especially a blown one. As for Billy, he'll only learn when he wants to. You can't force him to learn, just pray he learns before it's too late.

I know you don't think it's a big deal that you explain this stuff the way you do. But at least for me I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain this in terms that everyone should be able to understand. I'm a firm believer that any and all knowledge a person can learn from another person is PRICELESS. My uncle used to take the time to explain how and why and even though I always thanked him for his help and knowledge I'm sure he never truly understood how important that it really was to me. You the old man try to be there and show the right ways to do things im sure would do anything for your sons . experience come with time and I know that whole heartely now that I'm older 38 lol, and I see Billy sides of it to being young and eager and talented driving that truck as always been amazing watching him do, but being young comes at a price that we all think we know everything and we to a point that we think where smarter and know more than our dad and Billy one day out will superseded the old man but it comes with time and patience and knowledge witch your father has on you. where I'm getting at is in sure the old man's a ahole to you and probably doesn't say what he need to you the right way or goes off on you quickly and that's not the right way but probably the only way he knows how to he's from a different time and one day you will understand that and you being a young man and everything you have accomplished witch I'm very happy for you and proud as me being a father to your young still and think that you know more than him or just as much and your way younger witch is good and bad. My dad has been a automotive Tech for over fifty years and tought me alot of things over the years and I was at that point in my life like you where i thought he was just old and didn't know shit because he's been wrong to in the past ,witch I'm a automotive Tech too for 15 myself and very good at what I do. but not till a few years ago did my dad and me sit down and talk till he said that I've far Exceeded his knowledge , that blew me away my dad tell me this . It's all because of him that I was about to do that and I had to thank him for it because without him I wouldn't have never done it. he gave me the tools I just made them into what I am today from his help amd knowledge. Be a father we just want the best for our kids and to be better than we where and not make the same mistakes, we always don't do the right things or say them the right way but it's all with the best intentions I promise you this!!!!! yall are a great team and complement each other well witch us a deadly combination if used correctly!!!!! help each other make you shine together and BOTH OF YOU stay humble and try to think before you blow up and get mad for dumb shit. trust me time wasted you and never get back 💯. stay safe and kick ass together. would love to meet yall ,I'm sure would be a blast.

Mr. Bill i've been watching all SRC ch's for a while now. I'm 47 so I can clearly see both sides of this coin. A lot has happened that can't be taken back from both you and Jr. I feel the only way to repair this is to be quiet and what I mean is you have said your peace and Billy knows where you stand. From here your best path is to focus 100% on Tommy's truck. You need to make sure that truck is sound and ready to go fully maintained everyday. When Tommy continues going round after round and Billy struggles including likely blowing up his new big block he will quickly see his mistakes. It's time to give your full attention to Tommy's program and just quietly prove your point. It will only be a matter of time before Billy realizes his mistakes. It will hurt for you to watch but it's time for Billy to learn the hard way. Keep the great videos coming i can't wait everyday for new posts!

I grew up much the same in alot of ways as billy my dad had me in to restoration and racing of cars and I'm sure I drove him crazy with alot of my decisions once I went out on my own. He passed almost 14 years ago there isn't a day that one of his lessons doesn't help me as a mechanic and there isn't a day that billy doesn't use one of your lessons. The problem is when your pride got hurt by one comment about jets or other decisions he has made lately he is young and wants to prove himself to you and he knows as much as you that he made a mistake. The best part about your channel and Billy's is its family and seeing u working together and it shows how good of a father you are by the young man you have raised. The fine line of teaching us the mistakes and making it feel like you are rubbing it in his face is tough and I'd hope you talked to him before teaching us. Best part about my dad was I knew even if I was wrong I knew he was right beside me in my decisions. He might say to me after what were you thinking? but always said "we all make make mistakes it's who learns from them that makes you smart". You have raised a smart young man I love the content on all the channels and look forward to next chapters

Funny thing about "What is a lean mixture?" (with any fuel). With methanol, the stoichiometric (complete burn) A/F ratio is 6.45 parts of air to one part fuel. Methanol's peak power A/F ratio is 4.0 to one. When an (operating and calibrated) oxygen sensor is reading 5.2 parts air (to one part fuel), the mixture is leaner than 4.0, but richer than the chemically correct (stoichiometric) 6.45. In practical terms (in terms of engine health), running leaner than the optimum of 4.0 to one is no big deal as long as you don't go beyond the 6.45 to one complete burn limit-which will definitely increase the cylinder temperature to an undesirable level.
The problem, as I see it, is a disturbing lack of understanding by Billy. He needs to listen to his father while also making a concerted effort to learn the physics and chemistry needed to become a successful engine tuner. Learning by the seat of your pants is the most expensive and least successful way to go about doing this; there are tuning-specific educational organizations out there who can get a 25 -year-old neophyte up to speed without experiencing bankruptcy. It was excruciating to watch Billy the Kid use a drill motor on an in-service, expensive carburetor during the dyno test session.

I've just discovered this channel recently and man do I love it . Great video as usual and always looking forward for more . I'm 65 and ole school myself . I sure can relate to this ... I grew up with my dad concrete business and my grandads concrete business ....My Grandad had an old 58 chevy dump truck that I loved . He used to take me to the gravel pit to get gravel and he would blow the hillside with dynamite and we would hide behind that old truck from the blast. I was on an old ford backhoe at the age of about 10 years old loading the old 58 . In 1975 grandad climbed up on the bumper to work on the carburetor . The truck was parked on a sloping drive and the truck creeped on him . He fell off and hit the back of his head and had a heart attack . Grandmother watched him do this and when she got to him he had a smile on his face as he passed on / I sure miss my hard working grandad........ Found myself around a whole lot of older gentleman all through my young years . Each ole timer showed me different techniques of general construction and a little of everything including repairing broken equipment . Every single one of those fellows are gone now , but I still have their wisdom and memory with me . Just wanted to share for a lot of younger fellows out there about listening to older experienced gentleman . It can sure give you some good shortcuts in life . Thank you Bill , I have already learned so much from you too ! Can't wait for the next adventure !

Programming on the other hand a computer is required. Let me guess your one of those younger mechanics that’s always complaining how the can’t make any money. Even the cathedral heads can be worked to exceptional flow numbers. That’s the big kicker vs the oem gen 1 and 2 , the gen 3/4 oem heads have so much potential, and the bottom end strength is unmatched also. Build A-line off the back of the pump that you can stick in a jug of racefuel and and idle it until it starts blubbering... When it's time to use the truck again open the bulls and push Race fuel out until you see meth... It needs to be done every time the car's gonna sit gonna sit for more than a night... I really wish my Dad was more like yourself and was willing to teach. Billy should be extremely grateful. My father messed around with cars my entire teenage years in a 40×60 polebarn. Thing is I wasn't allowed to touch tools or help to fix a thing. He didn't want to teach or show me nothing saying I would just be in his way. Graduated high school and bought a 90's Civic to teach myself on. Built that thing as much as I could over time. Now I'm 36 with a 95 Mustang GT project that I'm building for street/strip cruiser. I feel it goes both ways and you have done your part willing to teach. Now he just has to come around and do his by willing to listen, interpret, apply and learn. Thanks for the knowledge from someone who's father didn't give him much on this subject. 👍👊 🍻
