    Bono is a wonderful person. He is a loving family man (married his high school sweetheart and they just had their 40th anniversary) , he is a advocate for human right and so much more. Now, being older, he sounds so peaceful funny and wise when you hear him talking. I have the highest respect for him 🥰

      I do too. He's a humanitarian above all else. They all are.
      When they played early on in their career in Belfast, they were set to play Sunday Bloody Sunday. Since it was about The Troubles and the 30-some citizens of Derry who lost their lives to the soldiers shooting them in the streets - Northern Ireland (more personal) struggle versus theirs on a daily basis with bombs going off down the street from their homes, etc. - they felt maybe they shouldn't do the song there.
      Bono spontaneously said to the crowd: This is Sunday Bloody Sunday. If you don't like it, we'll never play it again. The crowd loved it. But can you imagine any artist or band doing that - saying they'll never do one of their biggest songs again if those most affected by the subject matter didn't want it? Incredible.

    The boys are really young here, we're going all the way back to '84. There's a fun clip here on UA-cam called "U2 - Bono recording Pride (In The Name Of Love)". It's a grainy recording of Bono laying down the tracks for this song and Eno/Lanois and the band are both taken back and yet amused/charmed with him for how worked up he was getting while singing. He really is a fascinating person though; I look forward to his autobiography "Surrender" that is coming out later this year (also on UA-cam if you search "Out Of Control - 'SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story' by Bono").

    You are really starting to get it. Keep doing more U2.. you are just scraping the surface as to how special this band is. To go off what you said I believe the story goes Bono's Mother was told by a fortune teller she would one day have a famous son. So that sort of plays into what you were saying. If it weren't for the drummer, there'd be no U2! It all started in his kitchen after he'd put an ad on the bulletin board at school. Bono was one of the respondents, but he made it clear that he couldn't sing at all, or play any instrument. He had attitude though, so we're glad he still gave him a chance.

    The Edge is very good at creating an atmosphere and a driving a guitar sound. He has indeed a very characteristic sound. He is not the flashy guitar player, but amazing in his own way.
    The song is referencing to big people who sacrificed themselves. The obvious ones are Jesus (one man betrayed by a kiss) and MLK (Early morning April four, a shot rings out etc). Others might be Dietrich Bonnhoeffer (barbed wired fence), Ghandi (the man resisting) and Roger Casement (washed upon a beach). He is singing about how these people made sacrificing for the greater good and love.

      Love that one and wish he would watch all of Red Rocks, tbh! And, some others like at Slane Castle and Live Aid. He's going to see Bad from Live Aid next month - the one that set them on their course to superstardom. The thing about that performance isn't that it was such a great song or such a great performance; it was more about how they had no idea how much the world decided to love them after it. They were very down and disappointed in themselves, the band miffed at Bono for disappearing for 2.5 minutes. What could they do? They didn't know where their singer had gone so had to keep playing the same bit the whole time, or stop playing altogether. I've heard that Bono's ad libbed 50 different songs over all the appearances of Bad in concert. lol!

  • @lauraallen55
    @lauraallen55 2 роки тому +7

    The song is about non-violent human rights activists throughout history (one man betrayed with a kiss: Jesus by Judas, for example) and inspired by MLK Jr. In an interview I saw, Bono said his parents were mixed: one Protestant and one Irish Catholic. He grew up in Dublin during the Troubles so this was noteworthy. His father told him he didn't approve of how the Irish in N. Ireland were responding to violence from the English with violence; that non-violence was the way. This speaks to why Bono says at the beginning of Sunday Bloody Sunday (the live version) 'This song isn't a rebel song. This song is Sunday Bloody Sunday'.
    Bono (and the rest of the band) is a big human rights activist and it comes out in their songs a lot over the years, and they are involved in several causes. I never thought about how he has a kind of faraway look when he sings sometimes until you mentioned it, but it may have something to do with his passion about worldly matters.
    As someone else mentioned, yes, it's great you are getting it about why they got so big. I noticed this time that you are commenting more and more about the Edge's playing and how unique it is. He has a very light touch, typically, and oh so recognizable style and sound. Yes, Bono is mesmerizing, he pulls you in with his passion and emotion. Every single song they do has that element. And, there are so very many for you to hear as some have mentioned! A lot of non-U2 fans say Bono is arrogant, but that is not at all what I've seen/heard in interviews. I've noted respectfulness, passion, and a lot of emotion, even humility from the band in general over the years. But yes, there is a definite confidence there! In interviews I mostly hear him discuss things at a higher or philosophical level.
    I chose this song because they were so young in it (although their first song was a hit and they were 19-20) and it is more of a rock song all the way through and you haven't really heard any like that yet. It isn't one of my very favorites by them, even though I love it. I'm trying to show you several sides of their music across a few decades, so I'm glad they're growing on you - it's gonna take a couple years just to show you a smattering of their best songs, especially since a bunch of their deep cuts were as good as or better than their singles.
    Mostly I'm glad you're enjoying them, and I am very much enjoying seeing you start to see what fans saw in them in the beginning and over the years. The details, like you mentioned before. I have to add his passionate and emotional delivery is one of the reasons for their success and of course brilliant lyrics and music don't hurt!
    Great reaction, as always!

  • @lauraallen55

    I really should have told you this before but in 1987, they were campaigning for Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday to become a national holiday here in the States. There were many who didn't want this, and there were threats against Bono's life if they performed in Arizona. The FBI tried to insist they don't go on and play the gig. Bono and the rest of the guys decided they would. And, they did the song as part of their setlist.
    When they got to the third verse that is about MLK Jr. (as Bono related in their induction to the R&R HOF speech) he was 'excited to meet his maker, but maybe not tonight'. He continued saying that he closed his eyes when it came time to sing that part and then when he looked up, Adam Clayton, the bass player for U2, was standing in front of him playing.
    Bono finished by saying that many people will say they'll take a bullet for you, but Adam would have that night. Bono said 'that's what it's like to be in a truly great rock and roll band'.

    Forgot to say: what you said about that confidence that they just seemed to know they would be gods, I'm not so sure they always felt that, although they may have exuded it. At Live Aid where they weren't as well known yet, Bono introduced them in a humble manner as an Irish band. The've never behaved in a cocky manner, but many seem to think that of Bono. I think his confidence and otherworldly persona make it appear that way at times to some people. Also, a lot of people don't like 'do-gooders' which is weird as I find it admirable people of that stature try to help the world at large.

But to think you have anything to say about how the world should work? What arrogance!" I think that's why Bono is disliked by some people, they think he is pompous, arrogant and egotistical, but he's misunderstood many times. He could choose to support causes quietly and donate to charities in his own time, but he chooses to use the fame and status he has been given to help make a difference.

    Love this song, it's one of my favorites. I've noticed when you speak of U2 you usually mention Bono. He's wonderful but they are a team, have been together since 1975. Adam Clayton is an exceptional bass player and along with drummer Larry Mullen, they're the backbone of the band, it's rhythm section. Their beats are phenomenal. And The Edge, whoa! he's powerful and funky and majestic. I think you're beginning to see why they are so important; they matter because they care. Other songs to check out: Angel of Harlem, Where the Streets Have No Name, Night and Day (from the Cole Porter tribute album, a dance floor delight), With or Without You, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Ultraviolet (Light My Way) another favorite of mine, I can go on and on. I'm working on it - requesting them one song at a time. At this rate of one per month, he'll hear all their best ones by 2026 🤣 I've got 6 done now, only 35 more to go.
      Yeah, they've been together since teenagers and Larry put an ad for a people to form a band. They showed up to his house and no one wanted to sing. According to Edge - Bono opened his mouth and it was all over lol! Larry was just 17 when Boy was released, and two of them were 19, Adam 20 I think. I saw some early footage that shows them on a boat, black and white, and I swear Larry looks about 12, and the rest look 15. Just children. They worked hard though.
      Edge is definitely amazingly creative. I found out how he gets the chime-y, lightly distorted sound. It's his plectrum. He uses a very thick one with dimples/bumps and turns it round the wrong way and hits the strings with the wide end of it.
      What Anton said about Bono seeming not really there: I get that because he so gets into what he's doing, he loses himself. He puts his whole self into everything and it's never more obvious than in live performances. You can just tell how deeply he feels everything he does on stage.

      @@andubh9360 I called it that because it was alternate to what I and most people knew. It's called 'the single version'. Whenever it was written, I like it better than the one we saw. It was for forgetting Ali's birthday. What's the problem? I originally said 'it' was an apology for forgetting her birthday as in the song was. And it was, yes? I never said the later version was for forgetting her birthday. I didn't say anything about the versions. After you commented I gave my opinion the other version (whatever you want to call it) is better.

    U2 wrote songs that make you want to sing along to them, with 40,000 other people in a football stadium. And made a killing doing it. You can call it commercial, or sellout, or whatever, but there is something to be said for the genius of that simple formula.

    • @andubh9360
      @andubh9360 8 місяців тому

      I don’t know if you can call it pure sellout or commercial writing songs that are anti war/anti violence (Sunday bloody sunday, Bullet the blue sky, raised by wolves, Please, Love and Peace or Else, etc, etc), about drug abuse (bad, running to stand still), faith, human rights, and other pretty “heavy” subjects.
      And many the songs have some spiritual/ religious meaning - in the sense that if you are religious or know the scriptures you’ll get more out of the songs than we who don’t, not in the sense of preaching or trying to get people religious.
      So I wouldn’t call sellout or commercial. Their songs might sell a lot - but there’s not sellouts and they’re definitely not simple lovesongs or made to hit the charts or just to sell and make U2 a lot of money. They have something to say.

    What are they teaching/taught in schools of the under 40 crowd?! The Jesus reference and MLK assination reference flies right over their heads. We studied MLK in Jr. High and Highschool and my schools were 98% white students (not sure why,it just was).Watched many reactions to this awesome track and none of them knew. Smh
