  • How to disassemble a pallet without splitting the wood...DON'T USE A HAMMER!!! It's important to keep some of the old rusty nails and weathered edges for that rustic look.
    You asked for links to tools! So, here they are!
    I used a Dewalt 20 Volt Cordless Sawzall/Reciprocating Saw like this one.
    Dewalt 20V Sawzall Bare Tool amzn.to/2WW6kfo
    Dewalt Sawzall Kit amzn.to/2yVCijR
    Thin Blade amzn.to/2yUtMSk
    Punches amzn.to/3qw63Ni
    for punching the cut nails out of the planks.

    • @jeremylakenes6859
      @jeremylakenes6859  3 роки тому +4

      @@pokebui1640 You can use any blade that is a bimetal blade, but you run the risk of cutting more wood with the nails. I like to use a thin kerf metal blade with small teeth. It fits better between the planks and runners and cuts just the nails. Then you pop the nails out of the planks with a punch from the backside and you are ready to use or plane them.

    • @jeremylakenes6859

      @@dumfries4463 I am not sure. If you got a long blade maybe, but jigsaws are such short stroke and probably aren’t made to handle the blade being pinched between the boards and the friction that would slow it down. I wouldn’t try it. Craigslist is a great place for a cheap corded used saw or even Harbor Freight if you are looking to save a few dimes.

    I will continue to use a couple of hammers, and a pry bar. I do not like the nails left in the wood, and the bit I end up cutting off the ends would need to be cut off anyway, due to them not being square. I reuse every bit that I can, and that includes most of the nails, or screws that the pallet is made from. Saves a lot of money, even if it adds a little bit more time to the project.

    • @dusshan1
      @dusshan1 2 роки тому +7

      I don't think you will save that much by reusing nails from pallets.. good compromise can be to pry the boards then cut the nails using a saw while still leaving some small length of the nail in place and then hammer those ends out and finally pull them out using pliers.

    In the uk we use a 1" diameter solid steel bar with one end flate and tapered. we put the pallet flat and just lift thev boards of this also helps to get to the nails and take them out so you dont ruin your saw blades. It takes minutes per pallet. You can also weld a small hindged piece across so it is easer to priese off. Hope this is helpful

    I us the planks to plain down thinner boards for scroll sawing. Set boards up on horses then use a pin punch and small air nailer. It works perfect to knock the nail heads out of the boards and super fast. Place a bucket under the horses to catch the nail heads as they drop.

      Most pallets its either runners or planks you get. If the planks pop out without splitting and the nails come out of the runners, more power to you! I personally have not encountered a pallet that comes apart without splitting or destroying the planks.
      Go to a woodworking store and for a couple bucks you get hardwood by the lb. Typically the runners aren’t worth that much work and cleanup.

    Just spent an entire morning removing the boards from a heavy duty pallet used to transport a bathroom suite. Used a single leg car jack (not scissor type), claw hammer and pry bar to separate the boards and heavy duty runners. Ended up with a bucketful of bent nails. Wished I had seen this video first. I've done this and it works as shown. However, because you cut the heads off the nails you cannot mill the stringers for use without ruining every cutting surface you have. If you just need the slats, punch the nail heads out and get busy with your project. If you plan on using the stingers, be ready to disassemble the old fashioned way. If I'm planning on using the stingers, I cut the slats at both ends with a circular saw, then pull the slats off the middle stringers with a nail bar and hammer.

    Pros: No split boards, fast & easy, clean.
    Cons: Nails left in the runners and flat boards, you still have to punch out the nail heads on the flat boards before you cane re-use them, can't use the runners for nicer projects, major hazard when sawing-planing-sanding, even by driving the nails deeper into board they're STILL in the board.
    Moral of comment: know what you are going to use the wood for before tearing into a pallet with a Sabre Saw...

    I have the same Sawz-All and the nickname is true. Makes short work of nails. I like Diablo and Milwaukee blades. Punching out any embedded nail fragments in the slats takes a little time, but it's easy. The stringers are another story, but if you're using them as-is without milling, just hammer down on anything sticking out and put them to work in whatever you're building. My next project is going to be a tool shed using mostly pallet parts, although I'm not a purist -- I'll occasionally even buy a piece of lumber if I really need to - but pallet slats, especially, come in really handy. Thanks for sharing your technique.

      I have a Ryobi 18+ v Sawzall with Diablo blades and using a 4.0 Ah battery mine doesn't run through nails that quick. I think something's amiss about this video. Even still, after this is done, now you get to punch, pull nails out of everything. Much easier to get them out of the slats, than the runners. And all the boards will show signs of nail holes or damage from extracting the nails unless you intentionally cut those areas away. On some of the slats, it adds character. Not all though. Don't be fooled people, there is still a lot of work ahead after the way these pallets are torn down.

Made some stakes out of left over boards, drove them into the ground, then screwed the post to them so it wouldn't fall over. After painting white,Added some solar lights and our fire number on the little plaque and set them at the corners of my driveway.

    I use a different method and I'll explain why. Since the ends of the battens are invariably split anyway, I use a reciprocating saw
    ( I cant afford this fancy cordless stuff ) and a coarse wood blade. You cut through the batten next to the strut. This shortens the battens, but you dont get trapped nails and I think the split ends are a loss anyway.
    Once the ends are free, you can often prise the battens away using a chisel/bolster/whatever. With care, most will survive although some will split horribly ( stick 'em in your wood-burner ). The nails will often be in the batten, but can easily be bashed through a tad and then pulled with a claw hammer.
    That way you end up with battens with no nails and often no split ends.

      @@jeremylakenes6859 Hi Jeremy, I learned the hard way, destroyed one set of planer blades. And here in the UK the nails they use to construct pallets are a lot bigger than the one in this video. They take some getting through and I've tried various metal cutting blades with different teeth. I use a Ryobi 18v reciprocating saw.

    • @jeremylakenes6859
      @jeremylakenes6859  5 років тому +3

      Ian Stewart Porter The smaller the teeth, the better. I think mine was 28 Teeth Per Inch. The nails I cut were about 2.5 mm thick...maybe just 2mm. I use Milwaukee, Diablo, Dewalt, and Bosch blades.
      The longer the better because you can change where the nail hits the blade when the teeth are destroyed.
      They usually have two nails on the end and one in the middle. You could try a circular saw on the ends (taking off 3 cm on the ends) and then you are just left with the center nails to cut. This would also leave the nail head for the thick end boards making the nails easier to remove.
      I worked as a carpenter for 5 years going through tonsil nails, a name brand blade should hold up.
      Thinner blades help too because they are cutting less material and thus should heat up less.
      Bimetal blades probably won’t last as long as quality metal cutting blades.
      Also, I use a cutter head that doesn’t use knives. There is a “Shelix” head by Byrd and they use small square bits you can unscrew and turn if you hit a nail or rock. They last way longer than knives in hard wood. In the USA it costs about $450. I imagine it’s double in the UK.
      I moved to Brazil so I ended up buying a Velix head. It’s nickel plated so better for the humidity here.

    • @jeremylakenes6859
      @jeremylakenes6859  5 років тому

      Larry Huddleston Well, this method allows you to disassemble the pallet without splitting the ends. If you need the ends, then get a punch and knock out the nails backwards. You’ll still have good wood with the rust stains.
      The only part of my method I don’t like is that it leaves the nail ends in the larger pieces and that’s not good for a thickness planer.

    This method is OK if you only want the boards from the outside of the pallet. I also use the four rails from inside the pallet - often for turning tool handles etc on a wood lathe. This method is a complete waste of time to me, as it leaves these rails full of steel which you cannot easily remove.

    • @jeremylakenes6859
      @jeremylakenes6859  5 років тому

      BM Aus Yeah, I’m your case it’s better to run a skil saw down the sides next to the rails. Then pop the wood chunks out and you should have full access to the nails for pulling. Generally the middle rails use less nails so they might come off without splitting the planks.
      This also allows you a good chance at getting a lot of plank wood without splitting the ends.
