I had a fishing lure manufacturing company called Creative Lure founded in 1969. Our major lure was The Gyro, an alphabet crankbait. We, also, made a spinnerbait called The Brushmaster then renamed The Timber Topper. It was very high quality. I still see always on Ebay Gyros and Talk Tall crank baits for up to $100.00 My spinnerbait was one of the first that had a tapered head so it went through grass easily....The length of the arm should reach the tip of the hook so as it rolls over cover it doesn't snag. Spinnerbaits are the most flexible lure that is made. Can be fished from subsurface to 20-30 foot depth. The thickness of the blade is critical too. When hammered you shouldn't see the indentations on the inner cup side. If so, the blade is too thin.... We, also, were the first to reverse the skirt so it flared out. I hated vinyl skirts and always used rubber skirts. Just a few tips that are critical... This was an excellent review and I really learned a lot. Thank you
my first lure was an H&H spinner bait w/no hook. I was 4. At 6 I got a hook!!!!!! And I been throwing a spinner bait for 50 years. Today I make my own.
@RetroBassin all that great Pradco stuff over your left shoulder. The Moss Bosses, Racket Shads, and of course the Talking Spoon! Favourite spinnerbait growing up were the ones put out by Blue Fox. So many different sizes, colors and blade combos they took up an entire 4 by 8 pegboard in the shop.
The Spence scout was an amazing shallow water lure great show. Loving the memories coming back. Worked in a bait shop in Ocoee FL making worms for enticer worms in 1984
Outstanding walk-thru on the history of spinnerbaits! Man, you covered a lot of ground. Loved that you started with the Twin Spin and ended with tips from Bernie Schultz and Hildebrandt spinners. So happy to see this video this weekend. I NEED these kind of deep dive videos!
Thanks, Dave! The “History Of” is definitely one of favorite type of episodes we started doing on the channel, but boy, they do take a little time to give the subject the proper treatment…glad you enjoyed! Maybe Mepps or Dardevle next…
@RetroBassin supposed be in mail today,I like them may get a dealer box especially since box has old printing, I'm about calk that place in new Orleans for baby 1 - ,they killer crankbait
Thanks for this video, sir! I believe that Cordell spinnerbait you're holding at 14:10 is called the Buck Spinner, for the simple fact it cost a buck. It was a good basic spinnerbait. A couple very famous spinnerbaits that deserve mention are the Bass Buster Scorpion and Tarantula, which came with ball-bearing swivels, even in the early 1970's. Rayo Breckinridge used several lures for his Classic victory, including Mann's Wooly Bully spinnerbait.
My dad was a fishing guide when I was a boy. He was invited to the mid south states to fish late one winter(‘72 or ‘73?). He returned with a few dozen spinnerbaits. I fished them lots that summer. They could do it all. Fast or slow, high or low. One thing you didn’t cover that I always wondered about was when the R bend arm was developed. I grew up using snap swivels and hated the R bends at first.
@@RetroBassin I think a couple reasons for the change was it is easier to make an R bend than a closed loop twist bend and also fishing line cannot get caught and thus damaged between the twists in the loop. I still prefer the closed wire loop, though. It is strong and sturdy.
Hard to beat a classic like the spinnerbait. The H&H is cheaper than most and the compact profile gets bites that the bigger spinners won’t. But the double hook makes it snag more. Can’t fathom how many fish I’ve caught over the years on a beetle spin. I make my own as well and some of my biggest bass have been caught slow-rolling a spinnerbait in the fall or winter.
Son! Loved my Big Bass Spinnerbaits in the 80s. They were a bit expensive, but the Blue Fox quality was top and they came with a good trailer hook. The blue and yellow was my favourite. Started throwing Strike King in the 90s. I liked seeing the “new” diamond blades in the Bass Pro catalogue, they were great too. First spinnerbaits I remember throwing were Bomber Bushwhackers and Mini-Whackers in the early-mid 80s
@@RetroBassin They had great packaging as well, they just scream old school 😀 Sadly vintage spinnerbaits are one lure I don’t have. Where I tend to throw them and pike mangling have seen to that
@@RetroBassin Yes, that cone-shaped bearing protector is unique. I still use Strike King's 38 Special, which stands for 3/8 ounce in addition to the gun. I also still use Strike King's one ounce Pro Model with it's cone bearing protector, though my stock is limited.
Cool video! Love the little walk through time. I started fishing seriously about 1985 ish. I remember some of the lures I had one of those shakers I lost it and never replaced it. Fond memories of those days. Love the retro stuff
@RetroBassin The cotton cordell is my favorite one, and I think I prefer that hook to be smaller like that. Also, I have one called Manns undulator with a segmented blade. Gnarly metal blade. I think you showed one in a different video way back.
I have a few of those beetle spins and have no idea where I got them, though it was some time ago. I am going to make a point of throwing those next fishing season.
I have been watching your channel for about a year now ! I live in Florida and have been Bass Fishing for 56 of my 60 years on earth! My question to you is : I want go on a Retro Bass fishing trip ! What 6 retro lures would you bring ? I would be committed and not bring anything but retro lures ! So let me hear what lures in Florida waters you would bring . Love the show ! Mr Fishhook 😀
Great idea! Ok, six OG baits for a Florida day would go as follows... 1. Original Slug-Go in 6" 2. Culprit worm in 7-1/2" 3. Original Rebel Floating Minnow 4. Johnson Silver Minnow 5. Devil's Horse
lol…. Threw an original gold pepper shiner on the Withlachoochee River for 5 years when lunkercity first put them out ! I threw a moccasin culprit 7 inch ribbon tail Texas rigged on a black gremlin 1/8 oz weight pegged with a tooth pick on stren line as a teenager! Caught my PB at the time 8.5 on a fire Tiger Devil horse in Fort Cooper park lake as a teenager ! Everyone in Florida had an original rebel minnow in there box ! Never really threw a Johnson spoon . I’m in my 60’s now ! And fish more than ever ! I’m going to go back and look at your videos and throw some older vintage baits one day ! Some of the ones you get at the vintage lure shows . Thanks for the recommendations. You live in Florida now . Maybe one day we could go Florida fishing one day . I have a Nitro bassboat , but also a Sun Dolphin Pro 120 that I love to fish in !
I remember getting the BPS catalog in the mail and just waiting for my dad to get done reading it so I could. They were much better than the BPS/Cabela's catalog now. There is a BPS/Cabela's store in the next town over from where I live now except I'm into catfishing nowadays. I'd rather catch one cat over twenty pounds than a bunch of little bass
It's probably been ten years since I used a spinnerbait except for one private lake I fish. Everyone else uses this lure in the lake I fish so I use different baits like a dropshot worm.
@RetroBassin I saw some single blades ,but I'm not a bidding type person, just give me a price, you've got me hooked on big ants and anything shore minnow

I am trying to get more old school fishing baits
Spinner baits Rule!! Can fish em anywhere! Most fish catching lure I carry with me ! 🤠 Great show!
Thanks, ol pal!
Gotta love the spinner bait
How's the bite been? May be down your way next week or two..
@ we always catching 😁
Can't stop staring at that wall of gold behind you. Reminds me of my Dad's tackle shop when i worked there in the 80's.
Spot any old favorites?

Spinnerbaits. Old school that absolutely still works.
Thanks, TX! What's your favorite??
With no evidence, half of the bass and pike in Minnesota in the last 30 years have been caught on spinnerbaits.
Awesome bro! That new Shimano Calcutta may have been in that 91’ catalog as well,, what a gem!
Maybe I need to do a full walk through of that year...
Perfect vidio timing,I got in touch with jenson tackle on Tuesday and got 20 extractors in 4 different colors on the way very nice people
Can't believe they still have some! I bet they sold hundreds since we dropped that video...

Still not crazy about the r bend...
I like a closed eye way better than an r bend but they break so much faster. ie. Hank Parker

Those double hooks are definitely more snag-prone, but bet you could add a spit ring and a single hook!
Them walmart $1 spinnerbait is hard to beat. Made be stike king.
No doubt!

I wore em out on a spinnerbait today! They stand the test of time
Which one?
@ not a retro model 😆 war eagle willow/ Colorado
Ditto. I'm hooked on war eagle ³/⁴ oz in FL clear water. The z man Luke Clausen version in ³/⁸ oz in eel grass is a killer with the silver willows

HAHA, I seem to remember failing miserably at trying to turn a safety pin into a spinnerbait, probably after reading an article in Outdoor Life!
The pin would be way too short, right?
