  • Mental toughness is a highly desirable athletic attribute - an important asset for every competitive athlete to possess.
The difficulty is that although mental toughness is talked about extensively in coaching, few coaches understand it and even fewer know how to coach it.
It comes down to what you as a coach believe mental toughness actually is.
Mental toughness in competitive sport could be defined as the ability to continue to perform to your potential regardless of what's happening to you or around you.
In football for example, this means that players can continue to perform their role for the team - to the required standard - regardless of fatigue, pressure, pain, poor officiating decisions, making errors and missing opportunities.
And the good news is - that from this definition of mental toughness, coaches can create training experiences to develop mentally tough athletes.

Thank you - really appreciate your comment. Mental toughness is often misunderstood - and many people confuse it with being aggressive - i.e. the more aggressive they are the more mentally tough they think they are. I've found the opposite is true. Mentally tough people tend to be cool, calm and composed in challenging situations.

Happy to chat further. It's probably my favourite topic to discuss. Deal with me doing podcasts is that it can't be used in a commercial product - e.g. not in a paid course. Happy to do it - but it would be for education, social media and not product development. Contact me by email wayneATmoregold.com.au Thanks. WG
