well trying your best is all you can do and being able to do that is a victory in its own, may be a loss on paper,mentally it may be a loss but deep down if you know you tried your best its a win
@@stinkmod2297 then it's not your actual best. Because mentally IS deep inside you. It's about developing that mental toughness more. Better get em next time. Keep striving!

I really miss him. Very motivated . Unfortunately we lost him. His words always with us.
I took an hour private lesson from him back in 2012. My game improved by years in that hour. He’s demanding, strict, precise, but kind, true hearted and a brilliant coach.

As a tennis instructor by trade now and never play tennis until 2 months ago , played semi pro soccer without any prior soccer experience my baseball career as a shortstop and an outfielder made me perfect for playing goalie ,played baseball up to Semi-Pro, trained basketball to inner City kids in Oakland YMCA, archery and any sport that use body mechanics. This speech has made me laugh and cry and think about how his views are so much the same as mine but is obvious experience makes me feel like a child thank you very much for bringing him on I shared this with many of my friends who have the ability but don't think they're young enough will have the time to fulfill I've spent 50 years trying everything not reading instruction playing sports without training and still being good but not being constant.

You cannot gift someone to others. Mr Nick B is a gift to the tennis world.
Best example is Bjon Borg and Chris Evert. There were many players who had a natural ability, gifted, during their time. Yet, they beat everybody and became a legend. Both Evert and Borg had an incredibly self confidence and great mind. Also, Nick at 86 looks FANTASTIC.
As I met you personally and appreciate the coaching style. I have rounded up my style in the way that I help people and players become mentally strong and understand how to mange emotions and play really well each ball/game/match. As a performance tennis coach, PT, sports psychologist and NLP master I see all these details that composes a geta player, break them down and revompose them step by sptem with greater understanding of why/how/when to play that particular ball and extended to planed game tackling every option and opportunity. I use in my coaching all the tools/techniques from mentioned knowledge and expertise I have, to bring the best from every person/player who enjoys/loves playing or wanting to play this beautiful and complex sport.
Tennis is exceptionally grads sport to learn superb life skills mentally, emotionally, de Ion making, crating opportunities, capitalise in offered opportunities, etc

I was a 15 year old court attendant for Andre Agassi in the Vermont Volvo tennis tournament when he beat Tim Mayotte. He was very friendly and cool and was kind of the buzz player even though he was a nobody. After he beat Mayotte it was like the media suddenly turned on to the small tournament and Agassi was mobbed and on his way to the player he became.

Sooo simple, but if you break this down and truly Coach. It could take you a lifetime to understand and find the solution for your personality and coaching type.

What’s very interesting is that Nick never played tennis, just like Tom never sold real estate. But they’re both great teachers. Very interesting.
This proves you don't need to have direct experience in something to be world class at showing others how to do it. That's not to say direct experience isn't helpful but rather that it isn't required.
Or Leo Fender. He couldn't play the guitar.

Absolutely great speech. However, towards the end he was totally contradictory. Nick said: "You don't judge people by just what the score board says. You judge people by the effort they put into doing things." He moved on later to say: "You go out to win... Don't ever tell me you're gonna do the best you can do. You tell me you're gonna win." I understand, it's about the winning mindset of the champion, but at first he talked about result (winning/losing) as something not important. He basically said it's all about the effort, but it's also about winning.
I guess it's about always putting your best effort with a mindset that you are going to win!
What I understood him saying; there's a difference between the player doing their best, and the player fighting tooth and nail to do everything they can to win. Like Davydenko/Ferrer compared to Nadal, or even just Davydenko on most of his tournaments (the ball machine maniac) vs the ATP finals he won (where he just crowded the baseline, balls out, supper aggressive early ball striking straight out of Andre's book). The player who runs and grinds the point, cross court, and the player who digs deep and keeps searching for the strategy to make the win happen. I think that's what he meant. That the expectation you set is that you will win, and you will find a way to do it even if it means struggling. When you're losing you can just go through the motions, or you can get outside the box. Try something completely different. Like Medvedev last year at the USO final. He showed his heart. That's what we all judge him by.
For me the meaning is; are you willing to suffer? That's the effort. Are you ready to reach down past the worst struggle to find the true strength for victory? I think that expands from just your point play, but your mechanics in movement, in stroke mechanics, serve and point play. Are you willing to really suffer to find the best possible way you can do something? Suffer by torturing yourself learning every possible pattern your opponent wants to play? The Dunning-Krugger effect shows us that as we go beyond the initial understanding we essentially experience ego threat. We feel like we knew even less, we are even less capable or competent than we thought. And we feel weak. We must suffer through this. Both in the moment, and in the long term, to reach our true potential.

@TENFITMEN tennis impulse I have seen a few of your vids have any of you made the big time yet?
You go out to win means the thought process should be bent towards winning and its ok if you lose in the process. You won't be judged by the scoreboard eventually, you will be judged by the effort that you made to win.
You can consider the Wimbledon match between Fed and Djoko as the best example. Djoko wasn't supposed to win that, but he stayed in somehow because his will was to win it. If Djoko had lost it, he would have got the same respect nevertheless because his effort was always bent towards winning.
Fed is 40 but is still looking to win. That's the attitude you need to possess, the eventual results might not be the same.
Agassi , Sampras, courier, Martin all said he didnt really help them. IMG hasn't put out a top pro in decades.
