2D sprite are actually more expensive than 3D models when it comes to games. The reason 2D sprites were originally used is because they are less taxing on the hardware. So it makes sense that game developers would move away from them as soon as consumer hardware was strong enough. I still prefer the 2D/isometric look. Broodwar for example looks better to me than SC2.

You also can't monetize 2D sprites as much as you can with 3D models, most of the cloth and hair in Street Figther 5 isn't even keyframed so they can sell costumes, imagine the workload to make costumes for games like KOF13(KOF13 kinda had that but it was pretty limited and only a quarter of the cast if less had them) compare that to Street Fighter 5's 200 costumes

Such a beautiful art style, but so taxing.

I liked your take on this! It seems like the common wisdom is 2D animation costs more / too much, but there's a ton of inefficiency in 3D animating as well. Like in theory you have your character model ready to go and it's just a matter of posing and you're saving time on redrawing every frame, but manipulating those 3D tools is way less intuitive than just drawing what you want the frame to look like. You can also deviate from mathematical perfection and give each frame more character when drawing. If you're sharing animation data between 3D models to save time it's going to look compromised as well. The in-betweens that a 3D program generate for you (in theory to save time) are primarily a crutch, you still need to fine tune the timing and curves to get the right feel and end up tweaking so much you might as well do each frame individually.
As I'm thinking about it, it's probably just more difficult to find someone that has both solid design and animation skills, which is what would be required to make good 2D art. For good 3D art you can have a dedicated designer creating the models, dedicated rigger, dedicated animator, and it's easier to distribute the work among a team which increases efficiency.
    Anyways, long live 2D!

My understanding is that these days good 2D artists are far harder to come by then 3D animators in the current industry as well. This means you can pay 3D animation teams to churn out decently looking 3D even if it's expensive but all the money in the world wont speed up quality 2D animation.

    3d is way way cheaper.
Money is not the issue, 2d requires a shit ton more effort.
Spending more money into something that is more efficient is cheaper.

"[Anime Fighters] have gotten away with some pretty nice 2D animation, many [...] appeal mainly to a majority Japanese audience."
"Wakfu, which is not surprisingly played mostly by french people, also uses nice 2D animation."
Oh my God. The problem is Americans.

In Hollywood, and in most game development studios, there is no quest for excellence. The only exception, of course, is in the marketing and sales departments. :P

That's KoF XIII, not XIV. I'm surprised you didn't bring up KofXIV's, shall we say, lacklustre graphics and animation. Furthermore, I don't think it's right to say Cuphead is "relatively low-budget" since the developers did remortgage their house to finish it. Maybe it's due to Microsoft's publishing fuckery, but a game with as much detail as it had can't have been cheap to make.
Nitpicks aside, I'm glad to have you back. This topic, especially as it relates to fighting games like SFV and GGXrd, is very close to me ever since I started playing them last year. It's a shame to see more and more developers choose, as you said, slightly stylized photo-realistic 3D graphics over expressive 2D sprites and animation. I'm glad that my favourite fighting games know their audience and know what to do in order to retain them.
Any plans on your next video? I saw one of your threads on the darkest reaches of the internet, but that was at the start of the year.

I did get the numbering mixed up. The reason I didn't bring up 14 is because it didn't feel like a fair comparison. Everyone has insulted 14 and while I agree it looks like a ps2 game it was made extremely cheaply. SFV on the other hand is a sequel to the best well known fighting game series of all time and therefore it's more insane to me that it looks so ugly. For my next video I would like to do a Star Control 2 review. It's related in that it has some of the (in my opinion) the best sprite work of any game and it has been one that deserves more recognition. I hope to definitely release videos at a faster rate now that I am more free. It's sad to me that I really liked the way this video turned out but it's seeming to get less views than my last few, but I guess that is all randomly based on if people want to spread my videos elsewhere or not.

Don't let it get you down. Popularity is often completely arbitrary, and YT's algorithms prioritize cancerous regular uploads over quality videos like yours.
If there's one thing I suggest, it's "cutting the fat" from your script. The middle section of this video felt kind of meandering and I got the impression you restated ideas once or twice redundantly. Punchier writing tends to make people more interested in sharing it, although of course clickbait is just as bad.
Looking forward to your next project.
