In a world where live-action and animation are growing closer and closer to one another, Richard Williams was and still is one of the last remaining members of the old guard who wanted to push animation in the exact opposite direction, to do what no other medium can, and that's perhaps most evident in the masterful way in which his films move. Let's dive in and see what we can learn.

No-one I repeat NO ONE does animation without passion. Its like the most annoying and time-consuming process there is. You have to be a military general, an ascetic monk and generally crazy to truly be a great animator. Not matter if 2D or 3D that stuff takes for ever.

To add to what Tim wrote The illusion of life is a great book , it's goes back forth between the history of Disney and guide book for animators.
Richard Williams also wrote a book that all animators use " the animators survival kit " the first 2 chapters are a great look into animation for anyone who loves the medium.

I'm a big fan of Williams and I feel the need to point out that Williams was animating most of the Thief and the Cobbler long before the 90s, it's just that the 90s were when it was released. So he was literally doing those perspective shots when no other animated films were using them at all, and before anybody was using CG.

It's because it's animated on 1's and with incredible attention to character movement. What people don't realize is animation can look beautiful if a huge amount of, albeit painstaking, effort is put into it

I knew Richard Williams did Roger Rabbit, but I forgot he was also behind The Thief and the Cobbler. It's such an underrated film. Yes, it has its narrative problems, but the visuals are absolutely stunning and have stuck with me for decades since I saw it as a child. His book, The Animator's Survival Kit, helped me immensely during my animation studies in college. It's pretty essential to anyone who'd like to break into the artform. Anyway, thank you for making this. It's awesome to see tribute paid to one of the lesser-known greats of the industry.

OMG, what I love about this is that one time I published an unifinished project animation I made, and people said that it's too "smooth" and I felt like their were saying that because they didn't like the fact that it isn't smooth
The thing is that I love animating in one, and hate animate on two or even three, but I felt like I was the only one to do that
Now knowing that the master Williams had this ideology too, it's just taking care of my ego ! I'll keep animate on one because I love it and thanks Williams for confirming that animating on one is GREAT !

I remember watching the Thief and the Cobbler when I was small kid and being mesmerized by the chase scenes where the background moved in tandem with the characters, and the stunning graphic style that was so different from nearly every other animated film at the time. I honestly think seeing that film (and having my older sister study to become an animator herself & use the textbook Williams wrote lol) really sparked my love for art and led me towards a career in graphic design. So thank you Richard Williams. Thank you.

Depressing dot Co. don’t let great things intimidate you, let them inspire you! Let them show you the possibilities you have the potential to create if you’d will it. Don’t let the fear of failure stop you, because if you never try, that’s when you truly fail.

Well that attitude isn't going to get you anywhere good.
It's normal to feel overwhelmed or like you can't make it, but don't pitch a tent and stay in that mindset. That'll only kill the potential you DO have, and in turn that will be no one's fault but your own.
It's incredibly important to pick yourself back up and not let negativity beat you.
You're only as good as how far you push yourself to improve.

How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, but life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, but life goes on
As I bail through the empty halls, breath stinkin' in my jaws
Ring, ring, ring, quiet, y'all, incomin' call
Plus this my homie from high school, he gettin' by
It's time to bury another brother, nobody cry
Life as a baller: alcohol and booty calls
We used to do 'em as adolescents, do you recall?
Raised as G's, loc'ed out, and blazed the weed
Get on the roof, let's get smoked out, and blaze with me
Two in the morning and we still high, assed out
Screamin', "Thug 'til I die!" before I passed out
But now that you're gone, I'm in the zone
Thinkin' I don't wanna die all alone, but now you gone
And all I got left are stinkin' memories
I love them niggas to death, I'm drinkin' Hennessy
While tryin' to make it last
I drank a fifth for that ass when you passed, 'cause life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G

Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, but life goes on
Yeah nigga, I got the word it's hell
You blew trial and the judge gave you 25 with an L
Time to prepare to do fed time, won't see parole
Imagine life as a convict that's gettin' old
Plus with the drama, we're lookin' out for your baby's mama
Takin' risks, while keepin' cheap tricks from gettin' on her
Life in the hood is all good for nobody
Remember gamin' on dumb hotties at yo' party
Me and you, no truer two, while schemin' on hits
And gettin' tricks that maybe we can slide into
But now you buried, rest, nigga, 'cause I ain't worried
Eyes blurry, sayin' goodbye at the cemetery
    Though memories fade
I got your name tatted on my arm
So we both ball 'til my dyin' days
    Before I say goodbye
Kato and Mental, rest in peace! Thug 'til I die!
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?

From way befo' kiss me from my head to my toe
Give me a paper and a pen, so I can write about my life of sin
A couple bottles of gin, in case I don't get in
Tell all my people I'm a ridah
Nobody cries when we die, we Outlawz, let me ride
    Until I get free
I live my life in the fast lane, got police chasin' me
To my niggas from old blocks, from old crews
Niggas that guided me through back in the old school
Pour out some liquor, have a toast for the homies
See, we both gotta die, but you chose to go before me
And brothers miss you while you gone
You left your nigga on his own, how long we mourn? Life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, but life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, but life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G
Be a lie if I told you that I never thought of death
My niggas, we the last ones left, 'cause life goes on
How many brothers fell victim to the streets?
Rest in peace, young nigga, there's a heaven for a G

Stuff like this is why it bugs me so much that animation isn't really taken very seriously in the film world. This man is undeniably one of the greatest artists of our time, but he doesn't have nearly the recognition he deserves, and there's very little opportunity for younger artists to try to follow in his footsteps, because traditional animation is just seen as fodder for kids' TV shows and slapstick humor. And heck, even 3D animation is treated that way, albeit with a bit more respect for how impressive it is because I guess it's okay to call something important when there's a computer involved somehow.

I'm trying to learn how to animate and i'm not sure if other animators have trouble with this starting out, but I still don't understand animation frames and how they work like animating on twos ones and threes, etc) its a bit confusing to me. I guess it involves math and I never really liked doing math but ill have to get use to it...so if someone could please explain it to me in a more simpler way it would really help! Thank You! ( its probably really simple to understand but I just can't wrap my head around )

I know this is from a year ago but I'll try to explain this the best I can lol. So lets say you're making something that's in the standard 24 frames per second for animation. There are 24 frames of animation in one second. So what people mean when they say "one's, two's, and three's" they mean the numbers of frames that 1 drawing will be shown on screen IN those 24 frames. A more simple way to see it is, lets say you're animating on two's. The first drawing you do will be the first 2 frames of the 24 frames in that 1 second. So 1 drawing for 2 frames. "Two's". Same with all the others by their names. Though two's are more time consuming so if you want to make something simpler then do something like three's or four's. (you might have already figured it out judging by this being from a year ago but yeah lol)

American animation killed Richard William's dream of Animation growing up, carrying serious concepts. Only the French and Japanese can carry on the dream.
