update: hydraulic lifters replaced, starts like new
either hydraulic tappets (lifters) or camshaft worn. probably ran on a low level of oil for a while. To replace it you've got to remove cylinder head, therefore you will also need to fit a new head gasket set & new cylinder head bolts & new oil & new oil filter. Make sure cylinder head is removed while engine is a bit warm so you won't strip the threads on the engine block!!

yea, you could do that for a temporary fix..
or, you could've used the correct oil type for your engine condition..

Have the same problem, it's something related to lubrication on the valves. That's what my mechanic said, and that is very expensive to change the parts. You can live with the problem, that usually solves after 3-5 minutes after start, so I think its something also related to the oil type and temp.
this sound is coming from the hydraulic lifters, common problem in old engines with shitty oil. After changing the oil with 20W-50 the annoying sound should vanish.

I had the same problem,i changed the roker cover gasket and i allsow cleaned the roker cover couse it had a thick layer of solified oil and dirth...and the noise is gone.

Open the holes in the oil pipe and in the hollow bolt using a 1.5mm drill sticking very carefully. This procedure will alllow the oil to flow better and lubricate de camshaft and the valves properly. Assemble the parts back and VOILÀ, DONE, FINISH, FINITO, ACABOU, NADA!!!! Problem solved. Is not necessary you have mechanical skills or be an expert to do that. Just having the right tools,a little patience and courage. I guarantee you´ll be very happy.
e46 do click when cold, that is normal. Seems abit loud to be that. The only other time ive come across a loud clicking noise is when a spark plug wasnt put in properly after a service and poped out then the car had a loud clicking like in your video so it could be as simple as that.
sounds like its the valves ticking, wich is normal when a car has been standing for a while. It takes some time for the oil to get to the top of the engine and lubricate the valves.
What was the point of this video if the owner does not explain cause of the noise?

the motor is incorrect air waiver does not defective hydraulic ram or something
mine is doing this now, iv been in a pit and had a look around it just sounds like the gearbox, it does this when the car is hot or cold when hotter it just gets quitter unless driving then it's load. does anyone know what it is?

Mines was exactly like that. making that noise and I was keep driving it. then the engine locked itself now is not turning on at all. I end up in mechanic shop. I don't know what is gonna happen tomorrow.

Sylvester Karudi yes, starter motor caused the problem. Gear teeth’s was broken. Starter motor is replaced and problem solved.
My BMW 316i E46 was normal. When I change the oil (Fully Syntetic 10W60) this annoying noise appeared. I am quite sorry about that. I was wondering to change the oil again and put 15W40 to see if this bally noise disappear. By the way did you solve your engine rattling noise problem?

Had the same problem with my e36. Change the oil cap. rattling went away.

I have the same problem. But mine was only at idol, my mechanic said it was my double mass flywheel. But by the sound ofnyour definately just needs some oil.
mine is doing the same but not that too much after few seconds is bit ok.

Jakie zacofanie panuje w tym kraju z olejem silnikowym. Ciągle panuje zasada: "masz powyżej 100tyś lej pół syntetyka itd"
Gówno prawda. Jeśli producent zalecił lać np. 0W40 to taki ku..a lejcie cały czas. Potem wychodzą jakieś "dzięcioły", panewki.
Kolejna sprawa to taka, że większość w Polsce zna tylko Castrol, Shell i Mobil. Niestety są to średnie półki.

Mam e46 2000 318 i 118 km. Jak kupiłem miał zalanego.... castrola 10w40.... Zwymieniłem na ELFa 5W30... Po 3 tyfodniach olej znów czarny. Jakieś płukanie polecacie ? Czy mniejsze interwały wymian oleju ? PS: Klekot też występuję na zimnym silniku przez 5-6 sek. Coraz ciszej i potem normalna praca. A w okresie letnim cisza ood samego początku.

BMW ist nicht in der Lage, brauchbare 4-Zylinder in seine Autos zu bauen. Wobei Auto da auch eher ein aufwertender Begriff ist.
