The R8 gets an applause for starting at -10 😂 "extreme" 😂
lol i said the same thing, was kinda worried tho thinking the RPMs are supposed to be a little higher
At least now we know that a Subaru starter motor is very strong.
yes because Mitsubishi makes them
Ill tell you how strong they are. My clutch fork of my subaru outback 2002 was once broken, so i was stuck in 1st gear (was able to shift very gently without clutch). But in order to start up, i had to just crank it in 1st, and the starter literally pulled the entire car fprward, then the engine fired up once i was rolling hahah, had to do that multiple times, as coming to a stop at a traffic light meant it would stall lol
@@jeremiahjorenby2275 i am very much aware that only a few companies make these starter motors.
@@jeremiahjorenby2275 ok
@@carloS-jy1fl OEM starters in general are pretty strong, unless you have bad luck with your stock, or if you have an aftermarket starter..
Strong battery, synthetic oil, good starter and a block heater (if equipped) are all you need. I find what also helps is having a sheet of cardboard over the radiator, and running seafoam every couple tanks of fuel.
Cardboard on the grill works wonders for warming up a small engine faster in the winter! Just don’t forget to take it off when it warms up 😅
@@JadenZeCreator Cut a hole in the middle and you won't run too hot, if you do make it a bit bigger

that subaru had me at the edge of my seat.. most nervewrecking thing ever... man that' can't be good for the car
This Kia is amazing! 2 weeks in the cold and starts like that at -39C ?! whaaat?!
fake.
Nothing special as long as the battery and fuel are good, every gasoline engine will always start.
People on Russian north just take car battery back to home if they need to leave their car for a long time. And then bring fully charged battery back to car and start engine easily if it is gasoline engine. Diesels are better to heat by webasto or other heaters first
Such cold start take +50000 km of car mileage. I live in Russia and do not use a car at temperatures below -35. Starting a car is not a problem. But all rubber compounds harden in such frost, it is dangerous. Engine oil solidifies and for the first 5 minutes hardly lubricates the cylinder walls.
😆
In temperatures like that the engine oil needs to be 0W/20 to help the starter spin the engine over faster, there should be no necessity for it to spin over for so long before firing up,my diesel BMW 3litre diesel fires up within seconds no matter how cold it is but I always have 0W/30 engine oil in winter conditions and 5W/40 in summer and never have a problem. Changing the oil twice a year means the engine is spotless inside with not a sign of sludge even though I do a lot of stop start local journeys.
@@davidellis279 замена масла 2 раза в год? Господи... Хотя если вы катаетесь по 10.000 в 6 месяцев, то да
i think the Subaru needs attention..lol
Seen this occasionally happen to Subaru's, bad airfilters and/or lack of oil changes causes the rings to gum up and suddenly one day you'll go to start them and they'll have zero compression. I have been able to eventually get them to start after cranking with what sounds like a broken timing belt for 30s; seafoam and a bunch of redline pulls up to 100mph later the car was back to normal and didn't loose compression again. I can imagine that bad fuel injectors not properly atomizing the fuel have something to do with the failure to start in this video too.
Stuck rings will definitely cause that and like you said you wouldn't know until it got cold.

Good oil, strong battery and healthy starter are all you need (usually),we've got block heaters here in Canada but my civics have rarely needed them.
do you really need the block heaters for gasoline cars? I'm assuming maybe in yukon? lol
@@FuryfistX It was -37c here in Edmonton last week. It depends on the car
@@FuryfistX it helps a ton, keeps your oil in the oil pan a little thinner. I live in Winnipeg,it can get past -40c without the windchill and into the -50s with. Block heaters are a big help,a good starter and good battery are also musts wherever you live that has extreme cold.
@@FuryfistX Really depends on the car, my 01 VW Jetta 1.8t (gas) (which recently turned 21 years old) starts in -45c without issue. We had about a week long stretch of consistent -40s during the day and nearly hitting -50 at night. Without a block heater or pan heater it never failed to start regardless of temperature. The coldest start being a still -47C. Meanwhile my neighbors 2017 Jeep Wrangler needed a boost and cranked for nearly a minute before coming to life. I am located in Central AB
@@icemedia4830 я в прошлом году запускал HYUNDAI GETZ 1.6 в -46С. В итоге из-за такой эксплуатации, ремень ГРМ пришел в негодность к весне и его пришлось заменить.
1:50 That R8 doesn't sound good even at minus 10. Something's knocking.
A typical VAG engine feature.
@@WouterB76 Stop believing what the Internet tells you.
Well u can clearly hear that the knocking sound doesn’t follow the rhythm of the engine. It could be some heat shield that’s come a little loose. When the engine is cold and running at high idle and also varying idle the vibrations are more frequent and a lot different, therefore heat shields and other thin metal parts may rattle.
Nevermind, it does follow the engines rhythm!
It sounds like it's not even running on all cylinders, that is not a healthy engine. It's probably dead by now.
The amps and wear used in this video equals a years worth of normal starts! 😮
More like 5 years

Those are gasoline engines, they don't have problem turning on when it's cold outside. Tryout that with a diesel engine, that would be mission impossible 😃
First crank on a bmw E84 X1 xDrive20d, no preheating and -36c, sat 20 hours. No problem, jumped into car, pressed start button and after a few seconds of cranking the car started. It is all about proper fuel and good glow plugs.
ya you plug those in or its no go
as long as you're using #1 diesel, it wont be too difficult to start
Subaru starter could pull the thing farther than the motor ever could
I could of walked to where I was going in the time it took that piece of crap to get going
Another toast Boxer, what a surprise

I've found out that if you have good fuel with cetane booster, good plugs and injectors and good oil - aka a well maintained car - any car will start no problem in any weather.
My trusty old W245 Mercedes 2.0 diesel does 1-3 crank rotations summer/winter/anything in between and never fails to start first time.
But as soon as you neglect your car - you can sit there cranking for a while and change a starter and battery every 2 years.
Must have been very cold, the first Audi started talking italian instead of german
wasnt even italian that was romanian lol
A nice tip for people with a remote start: Use it when it's cold outside. I noticed that starting with the remote start is easier than when you're in the car because all lighting and electronics stay in "sleep" mode until you actually enter the car. If I had to put a number, I would say I get around 20% more starting power when using remote start.
When you start the car, all accessories are automatically shut off temporarily, regardless if it's remote or in car. It should make no difference from where you start it
@@davidzebar6876 Not every car does that
An Audi that actually starts, that's a surprise.
We don’t have any problems with our diesels at all. Our Mercedes W201 and our Mitsubishi L300 both 4 Zylinder Diesel start after glowing perfectly. Both have already run near 300k km.
We have to be impressed that Audi R8 is starting at -10C (with engine rattling) ?? My Yugo was starting at -15C decades ago..
The difference is the Audi R8 is a supermarket. It's never intended for this kind of condition. These cars are meant to be garage Queens.
Damn that Audi r8's oil pressure didn't even come up after all that time lookin at the gauges :'( haha

That Subaru is gone there's no compression
Thankfully I don't run into problems with starting my car anymore ever since I got a block heater installed on my car. It's installed directly into the coolant tubes so the whole engine warms up to about 20-40C after a couple hours of it running even in very cold weather -20 or colder.
Couple Hours? how many kw does a block heater like that have?
550W for my small VW golf, larger cars would have a higher effect for their heaters. But yeah they usually run a pretty long time ahead of departure when it's really cold outside.@@janhendrikfranke
mine is 500W, takes 3,5 hours to 20 at -22c :)@@janhendrikfranke
I am from north Kazakhstan usually during the winter temperature may drop -35 -40C I have a lot of experience with starting car in extreme cold conditions, Toyota is one of the best to start in cold.
Made in Germany is the best

Sound of water pump grinding ice
King Lexus.
At this temp I would pretty much remove the battery and heat it up inside my house with a portable heater and maxing a small room thermostat before putting it back on the car haha.
My car, a 92 civic si hatch with 450 thousand kms on it would start within 5 seconds in -42 c with no block heater. Our brand new work trucks failed to start so I walked out to my car, fire it up and drive to town from camp, the power steering pump would sure growl and moan for a while tho.
That Subaru gave me anxiety cuz I wanted it to start so bad
Same
Cold start with a modern fuel injected petrol or diesel engine is normally no problem as long as you keep your starter battery fully charged and use a high viscosity motor oil, e.g. 0W30😊
I think you mean a low viscosity oil.
That Is cute, here am I with my 2015 Volvo V60 D5 starting on first tooth at minus 35-40 celsius.
Waoooo !
Once I had subaru like that. No problem starting when -20°. That subaru is dead.
The flywheel in the audi R8 sounds like needing replacing😂
My cars 17 years old even with the car plugged in and a good strong healthy battery it still struggles in temperatures below -25 degrees Celsius. I once attempted to start my car not plugged in sitting g for 3 days in -35 degree Celsius weather and it was so cold my dash lights came on so slow the fuel pump barely primed all the door lock barley worked all the buttons on the radio were very stiff. My headlights and dash lights would not come on the relays were so cold some were not working properly. I started the car and it started but was making lots of noise and the RPMs were struggling that’s how cold the oil was I shut car off right away only ran probably 10 seconds and I said nope not driving today. Plugged car in and didn’t use it until weather warmed up a bit. From there I knew my cars limits anything below -25 is not ideal unless you plug the car in overnight.
Must not be a Toyota ☺️😅
You should have just let it run. It will be fine after it warms up as long as you don't start revving it immediatly.
As a former Subaru legacy 1988 hatchback owner. DAAAAAAAMN that subaru once it started sounded PISSED 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
thank god they put the Country in the video as text!.
