Thank you for putting it up in English, I really appreciate it and I'm sure many others do as well. Easy to understand, nothing lost in any form of translation... You made an excellent video!
Here in Southeast Alaska on the Tongas National Forest, I have been running my Stihl 440 and 460 for years, for logging, chainsaw milling, and with my Lewis winch. As I have grown older and my family has grown I run my saws less frequently. Over time the only problems I have had with my Stihls were carburetor related (2 rebuilds each), so I am EXCITED about fuel injection. My 460 is 15 years old so I think I can justify the 500i when it comes out. Thanks for a good video!
Coming from a traditional dolmar guy it looks like a really good tool. Only two screws to service, very steady idle and clean full throttle pulls. As for the stupid comments about the air filter he specifically notes he is opening it after 20 refills. There is absolutely no saw in the market that doesn't require cleaning after 10 refills. Let alone 20 that he did.
Excited to see a fuel injected chainsaw, but I'll wait until they've been in the field a couple years before considering one. First model years in anything tend to have more issues, and fewer refinements because manufacturers haven't had enough data returned from end users, and servicing dealers to see what works, and what needs tweaking, or what would benefit from being added or removed.
Still have not bought one, mainly because my old Stihls have been pretty reliable. If with the occasional repairs I have to do, I cannot bring myself to spend the money on a new saw. One of my small saws, the MS170 is getting a little tired, but since its mostly my limbing and brush saw, maybe an battery powered saw will replace that one.@@karm00n29
@Loner Wolf yes it’s overpriced, has sloppy motor mounts, and sure as hell doesn’t feel like 6.7HP, but it’s definitely rebuildable. Anyway, my bone-stock 572 doesn’t struggle to keep up with the 500is and is less fatiguing to use with the better mounts.
Great review, love that acceleration-fabulous operator, my only scratch my head moment, is the amount of saw dust under those covers and air-filter. been problem for many Stihl chainsaws......
Thanks for the English ! I double win on this video , part of Swedish and German decent . Looks like a real nice saw . Love both my Stihl saws , but injected would be an improvement .
Would like that too. Hopefully it's coming. It can be risky doing e.g cookie-cutting comparisons only, I believe you have to go deeper than that. Moreover, saws in such comparison needs to have been run for the same amount of time. A new saw, like this above, tends to perform better and better with each refuel. What do you think would be a minimum om running hours before a fair test could be done?
I have a MS461 that I use for milling lumber and am looking to upgrade to a bigger saw possibly a MS661 or MS880, but hearing about this saws performance and weight I'm interested in how this saw would compare as a potential replacement for that role in comparison to the MS461. As far as run time before comparing them I would think after running 10 tanks of fuel each would be a reasonable break in period for each and then do the comparison of the two saws.
@@Chris-Fennimore I agree and if I wanted my saw to last I would mix my oil 30:1 and back the top rpm down some to help it survive. I have seen first hand that a MS661 will not survive milling and it won't run on a mix other than 50:1. I bet this saw is the same way. I think these saws have there place and hopefully they will be a better setup than the electronic carburetors. Whatever you do, if you do purchase one of these or an electronic carburetor saw, don't tell your dealer you are using it for slabbing because I have seen them get out of warrantying a saw.
@@johnmorris7960, I wouldnt go messing with mix ratio unless you are running a type that reccomends it. Also, you cannot adjust top rpm on the electronic saws, it is computer controlled. Also, all Stihl chainsaws are designed to be used at full throttle under load, if you mess with throttle settings or mix ratio you can wind up with sludge or coke in the cylinder. Always use mix oil designed for air cooled 2-stroke engines.
You're a stihl plat tech, so you can get me one by sunday right? =) Shit, I'm obsessive, just got the 880 yesterday, never even seen wood, yet I've already forgotten about it.

It's not the first EFI chainsaw ever made. I made on once but used windows vista to run the EFI computer control. It took about 5 - 7 minutes of vigorous pulling (Not sure exactly cause I passed out from exhaustion once) to get the computer too boot up and run but every time it kicked back hard while cutting it would bluescreen on me. After two days of use I went back to using a unsharpened late 1800's hand powered buck saw I found in the mountains a few years before.
Too all that made comments about the air filter ? It is not whats on the outside but what is inside the filter that counts . The little bit of dust in and around the inside of the saw is normal it is a air cooled two stoke and they suck lots of air inside the housing for cooling . I stihl like my Huskys and doubt I would change .Old west coast BC boy
That's a good point the HD filters on the mtronics don't let much in and you still see a good bit around it i was missing a seal around one and it still didn't let much in after a good few days work.

I like the way he isn’t very verbose and seems to hesitate when he speaks. Probably because English is not his first language. But also because he is a man of few words to begin with.
Omg, so many complaining about saw dust, maybe find another line of work lol! Stihl saws can cut 8-10 hours a day with ease, no need to clean air filter more than a quick blow at the end of the day. My saws have never had an issue after 17 years in the game, service them myself, my original 660, 200t & 192t still going strong. Had a few huskys, air filters are better i guess but the rest is rubbish, only advantage is the weight, much lighter big saws, lighter on the spikes when blocking big barrels but id prefer the stihl anyway for the power.
It's true. I run a 28" bar on my MS290. Others say it can't be done but I have for years. That 290 will run every inch and pile chips all day long... so long as I keep the chain sharp.

The new click knobs on the filter covers don't help with the sealing. It is better to swap them out for an old style screw knob and tighten them down more or better yet use a MaxFlow oiled filter. Twenty tanks is also waaaay to much time for one of these filters, they should be cleaned/switched daily if not after a half a day. I have noticed that putting the filter on with the same side up always helps with sealing as the base plate can deform the sealing lip which causes problems with sealing if the filter is not put on the same way. Good video Just from looking at the movie I wonder is it just a bit too light for the sawing of the log a lot of sawing action? I like the no Carb idea Progress.
Hi! What is that thing on the top of the engine cover? Rpm meter or what?
Hi, It's Stihl Connected, a Bluetooth device where you can check running hours and so via an smartphone app.
Wow! Thx!
The saw is a beast I think it's Overkill for me. I'll go with an 462 what is also an really nice saw
Professional Forestry Chainsaw in 2021! - with rubber fuel primer..!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Bloody Hell. STIHL - Grow up.
I know someone who bought one - Mouse chowed on the primer bulb at night - and that was that. Can’t go to work in the morning..! Nice.
Jonsered had the first fuel inj saw ! A good review as you always do and thanks for doing it in English ! Be interesting to see how this and the 462 cope with some tough days in the forest, the area around the airfilter looks a little basic but in the hand maybe it's a lot tougher ?
I need parts for a Stihl chainsaw old 48
