    I am a firewood cutter and have been using the 400c now for three seasons. Bought one when they first came out to replace my 038 super and was not disappointed. At my stage of life and the couple of cords I burn a year, doubt I will need to replace this saw.
    I understand (somewhat) Stihl needs to continuously develop product to meet regulations and keep customers interested in the brand, as the competition does the same. Not all bad.
    If not for change and progress I would still be using an 08 with a 16” bar and wondering why my back is always sore:)
    I am interested to see a comparison of the three saws in question, same bar, same chain, same operator.
    Thank you for the video, good job!

      I used to run a 038 av super which I had rebuilt and ported myself, I opened up the exhaust, it was a beast even with a 24 inch bar and chain, never bogged down, legend, then some scrotum broke in to my lock up and stole it, 😢😢

      Love your videos, Richard. Throttle response is about all that 400.1 has. Great job Stihl... introducing the world's HEAVIEST "limbing saw"! Is this what happens when Stihl's accountants and marketing department start designing saws!? Oh yeah, 5:26 ...sounds like a real winner...not! A current 400cm with a Bark Box or Straight Shot, would kick the snot out of the 400.1 running identical 20" 72DL 3/8" .050 RS chain on ES bar burried in an oak stump. Get real ...the 400.1 cuts production costs and product line better than it does trees, is a paper stats cheat that doesnt perform as well as it looks, and is a marketing department's ugly step child.

    A very interesting video, guys, despite the suspect test material...the next video can correct that. As someone who owns a 362, 400 and 500i the main attraction for this 66 yr old body is the weight difference. A saw that is 300 grams lighter than my 400, with the same power more or less, might just tempt me to get rid of a few saws and risk this largely untried version. More likely, I will wait a year and try to find out how it has performed in a tough professional forestry or tree-service environment, but every test video like yours is very helpful and I look forward to your next comparison test.

      The old 400c was too close to 462 in both weight and power. They dropped the weight and kept the power level to about the same with this new one. We probably won't know, but it most likely was screwing up with their sales and bottom line and wanted to return to bigger differences between chainsaw model/sizes.

    I love my 400 cm. One of the best saws I have owned. The aluminum piston in this will be a benefit over the magnesium. Heavier crank and heavier piston will help it not bog down like the 400 cm when you pry on the dogs.

    I like the fact that lots of parts like clutch cover etc are interchangeable on the old stihls and i can service everything myself. I also quite like the squat nature of the 04 series stihl, they feel right and balance well with both short and longer bars.
    I wonder if the weight saving will come at the expense of long-term durability compared to the heavy but reliable old saws.
    Would i buy one? No, im happy with my old saws but if i needed too then i could be persuaded. The styling looks good and the saw looks compact.
    I have a husquvarna 572 that i rarely use and find it a really bulky saw almost the same size as a husquvarna 390xp but without the power.

    I own a Stihl 400 Ms I and it's cut over 100 cords of wood without a hiccup... It gets cleaned n serviced properly after every cut... I run it on premium 91 with Lucas mix and a bottle of seafoam with a touch of marvel ... Closer to a 40:1 and the seafoam keeps it squeaky clean... Stihl makes the best saws hands down... Keep them cleaned, serviced and run quality mix and fuel and they'll last forever... Also don't bog the saw, keep the chains sharp as it keeps the saw in it's power band (they're 2 strokes) bogging them is hard on the clutch...

    It seems the ms 400.1 cuts really good in smaller stuff but in bigger stuff when you push it bogs down I bet the saw has a 8 pin sprocket change to 7 pin sprocket. Maybe it will cut stronger.

    I mean of course people are gonna hate on it. Especially 400c owners because they see the minor decrease in cc blah blah. The bottom line is … the 362cm and the 400cm were totally clashing … I own both. I always thought to myself, if you’re gonna get the 362 might aswell get the 400 … and if you’re gonna get the 400 … might aswell just get the 462😂. Bottom line is the 400.1 is going to be light, more torque, and be a perfect middle saw. Now u got your 261, your 400.1, and your 462 (or 500i 661) for the big saw. It’s going to simplify things and I guarantee you it’s going to be a great saw. Another thing to note is likely in some time , 5-10 years, those 362 and 400 parts may be harder to find/work on/tune up giving the discontinuation. I don’t see why people wouldn’t want the new 400.1

    • @FT4Freedom
      @FT4Freedom 12 днів тому

      Maybe because they discontinued an epic saw after only 3 years on the market and are leaving a bunch of loyal customers to deal with it. Killed one of their most loved saws 400c.

  • @saltrock9642
    @saltrock9642 2 місяці тому +1

    It better have torque and durability. This appears to be a move to run people to the higher priced 462 because who wants to downgrade to a lesser saw. The 400.1 specifications say lesser saw than 400C and people look a the numbers. I have 400, 462 and a 261 so I’m in great shape. I’m curious to see how it goes but chances are I will not be getting a 400.1.

      I’d say it’s real close with the original 400 time will tell how it holds up. Stihl is in the process of changing all the saws in the line I bet. Started at the 881 then all the small ones 162-212 came out now this new 400 all with white letters on rewind and orange on the clutch cover. They replaced one of the oldest saws in the line with this 400.1, the 362 design is old along with the ms261 which I wouldn’t be surprised if its replaced next couple years.

    • @CutterCH
      @CutterCH 2 місяці тому +1

      @christopherlehman4045 And the 163-212 don't perform as well as the saws those replaced. They are all turds. Said to have more power but they don't. Stihl has been working in reverse. I know a few people that got their hands on the new version of the 400 and they all agree that the original 400 performs much better. When Stihl takes a very popular and trusted saw that is only 3 years old and changes it that much, that tells me everything. Stihl has cheaped out once again. Cheaped out and bumped the price up. Yet they wonder why their sales have dropped more than any other brand.

    • @christopherlehman4045
      @christopherlehman4045 2 місяці тому

      No they don’t claim the small saws make more power than the old ones. 162 is heavier and less powerful and Stihl said that. 400 was a revamped 362 that’s old as heck and was going away still need to make new saws and 80% of the 3 year old 400 was 362 they decided to change and go one 60cc in the middle. I have a 400 currently that’s ported.

  • @FT4Freedom
    @FT4Freedom 12 днів тому

    MS 400.1 torque 4.3Nm. MS 400c 4.1Nm. 5cc less volume but .2Nm more torque. Likely because of heavier piston.

      @xviesulisx Місяць тому

      Stihl chainbrakes can last long time even on this hardcore use, all other chainsaw makes are far behind in chainbrake department IMHO. Husky-constantly brake band end gets broken off, Echos, mechanism linkages can wear down or broken and handle itself can go broken off and no such problems on Stihls at all.
      Old SOLO had very similar chainbrake linkage construction style. Maybe on Dolmar is similar.
