- The STIHL MS 500i has been out for a few years now and I have ran a few of them in that time. Some say it is the best pro saw on the market. So today I am going to run a couple of tanks through one and give it a good workout! I was not disappointed at all, this saw is AWESOME! It cuts fast with nice power and sounds great while doing it! THE HYPE IS REAL!

Happy father's day dads.
Thanks Ken!
im full time tree service, i dont get sticking to just one brand. i run husky, stihl, johnsered, echo......and love them all. varity is the spice of life
Yup, every brand makes turds and gems!
My father was fluent in German and I asked him this very same question many years ago. Still or steel. He said it’s pronounced more closely to steel. “Schteal” in German. So kind of a hybrid of both. Happy Father’s Day !
Thanks...I like that one! SCHTEAL IT IS!
That’s what I have always heard too Chad. My mother-in-law is German. A lot of SCH in there vocabulary
Same here, but then again the American-tion of the pronunciation is to drop the H hence Stil. Now don’t ask Irene she calls it a chainsaw no matter who makes it to her that’s all it will ever be!, remember Chris your the one who says “I like it as long as it’s sharp and runs”….
Being German, I always found the American pronunciation - like steel or steal - way cooler... 🤔
But anyway, if you're interested in the German pronunciation, then yeah, it definitely starts with an "Sh"-sound, like schteal. It gets a little more tricky though when it comes to the vowels, since even in German there will be local differences. Speakers of standard High German will pronounce it with a very high i, like Schteel. But STIHL is a company (and Stihl is a family name) from Swabia in Southern Germany, where most speakers will pronounce the i more like in "still" (only looong, of course). They will also pronounce the t as d. Seen from that angle, there is no "correct" anyway and you might just as well forget about the whole issue. And maybe you better don't ask the Swedes about the allegedly "correct" pronunciation of Husqvarna. Just say husky, they will love it 😉
@@homeroffice2000 Awesome feedback! I do enjoy my mother-in-laws accent so much!! Appreciate ya👊🏻
I have always found that Husgvarna have a better air filter system. But the 500i is awesome
Great point!
I will never deny that the 500i is an awesome saw. I cannot justify the price tag. Could buy 2 saws for the price of it. Stihl dealers in my neck of the woods, never have a sale on pro saws. Big orange on the other hand, usually a big sale twice a year. 15-20% off and a cash discount. Show me a 500i for $1400, I'll be sure to own one. $1700+ retail in south west, PA area.
Yup, as my friend would say..."they are proud of there stuff"
That they are, for sure. Lots of people are buying into it. I own a 400 and 462, they aren't the best thing since sliced bread!
@@EricChmelarsky-vh7eq If you are not happy with the 462, I'll take it.
That Schteal shirt looks more natural on ya Sir Chris!🤣 Leave the dark side and join us😂👍🏻👍🏻GNI
Ha! I want all the saws! More is the right number!
Thanks for wearing safety gear. 👍👍👍
Always!
Good afternoon Chris!!😀😀
The 500i is a heck of a saw!!
The proper pronunciation for Stihl is Steel. It the German pronunciation.
Back in the 1980s at my old Stihl dealer in Berlin they had a display rack from Stihl that said right on it say Steel.
That's why we pronounce it Steel.
Happy Father's Day my friend!!😀😀💚💚
Logger Al
Yup, it is a great saw no doubt but for the pronunciation there are some German "experts" here that claim the Stihl family says it..."SCHTEAL" and others say Still, Steel and Schteel so now I am really cornfused!
Happy Father's Day guys... good day to be ontop the dirt. Enjoy it
Yup and vertical!
Happy Father's Day Chris and everyone, awesome video. You're enjoying the "Dark-side" more and more.😁
It is a great saw!
A Stihl 031 was my first chainsaw. It was a great saw buy my dealer started handling Jonsered and a 49SP was the same size saw but ran an 18" bar must faster than the Stihl so I switched to that, then got a Jonsred 910, That was a great saw. IO have been thinking about a Stihl 500, I need another big saw.
It is a great saw!
Good power to weight .
I wasn't expecting a German or English lesson in the comments this morning.
Happy Father's Day to you and your family, Chris 😉👍
Thanks Sir Daniel! Same to you!
good seeing you use the log jack. I love mine.
Yup, it is awesome!
Power to weight is amazing. I totally get it. Wished my life was appropriate for one lol. I’d never do it justice! Happy pops day.
You can do it!
Super awesome video today Chris! 500i carnage was 🔥💯👍. Thanks so much for all your awesome daily content! Love visiting everyday!! 😊. We’ll see you tomorrow, an happy Father’s Day! Andrew from NB :)
Thanks again Sir Andrew from NB!!!!
Happy Father's day bud I ran on of those 500 saws all day on day it's a great saw to rich for my blood if I cut every day I get one for sure.
They are very nice!
500i is a great saw, it has features I enjoy, has pretty good power, but I will say I run a 660 just for the sake of the sheer power they have. I noticed on the landing bucking logs that a 660 runs circles around 500
Yup, I would agree, I have ran a 592 and 661 side by side and the both are faster and more power than the 500...but heavier too.
G’morning Chris. Looks like a Rippa ! Excellent Carnáge !! For sure on my list of things to make my collection more better ! I would say “Shtill”
GoodNightIrene
Good morning! Yup, she does cut ....and very muchmorebetter than most!

Getting my first chainsaw this week, a Stihl 251C-BE. I grew up watching my dad saw with McCulloch's at our tree farm, but lost interest in the woods just about the time I was old enough (in his opinion) to be taught to use one. But I've taken a safety class, have my steel-toed boots, and ordered my chaps and helmet. We've got a couple of acres and they're mostly clear, but we've got 6-10 mature trees around the edges that need to come down this year or next (a big, dead maple, several ash trees the borers have gotten to, etc.). We'll have arborists bring 'em down for us, then I'll buck the trunks for firewood. I figure it'll take me, oh... the rest of the year? :) Love the channel and appreciate your no-BS style. Cheers!
You will do well! I have to warn you however, it is like drug...it leads to more!
Good saw. I just got one and they are cutters for sure. Hope you are getting better from your tick related illness.
Yup, great saw and I am much better ...thanks!
Nice work!
Thanks!!
Good Honest review Chris, Happy Father’s Day🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
Thanks! You too!
Glad to see you using the safety gear and holding the saw correctly with your hands. Your grip will help catch kick back from the saw. A lot of users don't wrap all five fingers around the front handle. Nice video!
Good call! Yup, PPE and grip!
Loving my 500i. Great for someone with back problems, light enough, but with enough grunt to make its way through Aussie hardwoods.
Totally agree, it is a great saw!
The county I live in is heavily forested, has a huge papermill and 2 commercial sawmills. It is always pronounced steel here. I have had a top handle Stihl for 10 years and it has been a great saw, and a Husky 550XP MarkII for 4 years that I like very much, but it is still young. All I use them for is yard trees and my own firewood.
Both companies make great saws! Keep cuttin'!
Whoever says "still" is talking about a great grand pappy's moonshine operation.
@@thefirewooddoctor Ha!
That MS500 eats! Especially for something like locust. I've used a friend's MS462 and that was big fun to use. Chews through hickory and oak like nobody's business
Yup, they are great saws!
I agree Chris there’s no E in there👍 although as an Aussie you yanks do talk funny😂🤣
Yup, we all talk funny! Gday mate!
Chris,as you have said before as long as it cuts it’s doing the job doesn’t matter what brand 😮😊❤
Yup, every brand has gems and turds.
@@InTheWoodyard welcome to the Darkside! Once you go stihl you never go back! We had Husqvarna in the past and they are great saws! Chris, have you tried the MS 261?
I'm still ole school big cc and more power! After felling froozen hardwood for a Huskie guy with My ole AV075 404 pitch21"bar&chain. He was converted the first week! Could saw steady for anout an hour on a tank of gas. Yes 23 lbs is heavy working in 4' of snow. Just carry saw on My shoulder.
Yup, big saws are for production!
I thought that 500 was Bert’s saw. Very nice saw. Stihl with an I.
How is the weight to power ratio on that saw compared to your huskys?
No Bert is afraid to touch it. It is good, they all cut well.
My dad ran a pair of Stihl saws in the 80s until the local saw shop switched over to Husky. Everyone around here pronounces it steel. I think that's the correct pronunciation.
So far it is 50-50 so......????
@@InTheWoodyard I guess it's one of those German surnames like Porsche that most Americans mispronounce. The real car and saw snobs pronounce them Porsha, and shteel.
Good morning Chris nice big chain saw love it ( Happy Father everyone Ty Ron
Thanks, you too!
I bought my full wrap 500 when they first started trickling in. I run a Egan straight shot exhaust and maxflow on mine. It may be painfully loud but it screams so hard that it still gives me the goosebumps and smiles with the out of the cut crackle on a 32” bar. She sure does guzzle the fuel tho! Recently picked up a 400 to replace my tiring 036 as my main with the same treatment and it might be even louder 😎
Yes I know the mods make the saws faster but the cost of loosing my hearing is a little to high for me.
@@InTheWoodyard all the years of owning a landscape business without hearing protection already made me half deaf, now I know better. But when I open a yard im prob Gona have to be nice to the neighbors and go back to stock
@@carl27890 yup!
It’s going to be great once I get my left elbow fixed I’m not able to do any heavy lifting or anything with a chainsaw 😢 hopefully the mri will help find what’s going on 😁
Good luck! If you have problems I do have a rusty dull jack knife here that I could use to fix you up! HA!
You are lucky to still be able to find Husqvarna in your area almost all of my local dealers have dropped the brand or carry very limited models. I was going get the 550 but none instock so I got the Stihl 261, I have also looked at the new 562xp but they are special order through a dealer that has carried Husqvarna since the 80's they are all saying that they having issues with getting parts up to six months on somethings.
That sucks... the new 562 is awesome!
Around here there is probably 3 Stihl dealers to every 1 Husqvarna. One of the reasons I kinda prefer the Stihl. Dealers are everywhere and there is one within 5 miles of the house. The one main Husqvarna dealer here too is a real asshole. I still have some Husqvarna saws besides the Stihl, Echo, Makita, I have an old John Deere too and a couple ancient Homelites. There is a big box store here though that sells both brands and they have all the pro stuff but its a big box store would much rather deal with an actual dealer. There used to be a Jonsered dealer but I don't know if those are even sold anymore. I know there is the RedMax now maybe they replaced Jonsered I don't know but I have a RedMax as well and its just a red Husqvarna. There is one RedMax dealer I know of here but they have basically just mowers and trimmers not sure I ever seen a saw in there before but I am sure they could order one for you.
Love the saw vids no matter what brand
Thanks!!!
Damn Chris now you really got it going on❤!!!
Yup, it is a good one!
Nice video Chris. Never ran a 500i or really wanted to. Too expensive for my budget but if you like it I’ll take your word for it. I call it STILL. All the big gas saws are living in fear of the batteries that are destined to steal their thunder. Honey Locust I have lots of experience with. Heavy with a capital H. Makes a sharp chain chatter. Noodled lots of it with just a 455Rancher but a lot slower. Not my favorite campfire wood unless I want to cook over it much later, then the bed of red coals lasts a long time. GNI
Yes for heating wood it is very hard to beat....VERY HEAVY STUFF!
Stihls rubber primer bulbs usually crack pretty quickly. I've had it several times on my leaf blower and string trimmer. Hopefully my husky doesn't learn bad tricks from the other 2 strokes
Good to know!
Great content. I imagine its more like your used to with the right now rpms. I like my 500i the worst thing about them is the price and the crappy factory air filter for that price. That honey locust is no joke. The locust borers sure are making a mess of my wood stacks. Have a great day
Great point! Yup, locust is serious wood!
Best saw I own by far. Even the 592 xp ! Honestly don’t understand why Stihl haven’t come up with other fuel injection saws.
I have heard that a 600? 100cc ??? might be coming???
I ran a 500i for the first time today. There's no bloody way it keeps up to my 592xp. That being said, it doesn't weigh anywhere close to my 592xpg either. I'm nowhere close to a stihl fan, but the 500i power to weight ratio is good. I'm helping a guy right now and I might ask for a 500i as payment after I put enough hours in. If he writes a check the govt takes it. If he buys me a saw they take alot less.
Seems like your recovery from tick attack is ongoing. You seemed fatigued, and when you sat down at the end I knew it.😂😂
Yup, but better every day now, thanks!
I not sure of the correct pronunciation, but just wanted to be sure you had a great Father's Day!! GNI
Yup, thanks Bill!
Nice saw, that thing is a beast in the wood
Yes it is a winner!
Happy Father's Day Chris!!
Thanks Tim!
Can't wait to get my hands on a 500i, waiting to see if my hunting land in western michigan sells so I can get myself some handy upgrades 😂
It sis a great saw for sure!
Awesome. I wonder where the evolution of saws will go next…
Rotary jets?? Nuclear?? Flux capacitors??
I bout a 362 recently and realized that it weighed close to what a 500i does. Guy at saw shop said he got a used one in from someone who didn’t want that much saw, offered it to me in trade for the 362 and some cash. It was all I could do to say no, but I sure was tempted.
Yup, the 362 is nice but the 500 is nicer!
The video with all the saws cutting will be interesting. I like those types of videos.
What does the i stand for in 500i ?
Neat tool for moving and lifting logs, you had that in the old wood yard.
Great video. And
Happy Father’s Day
I do not know what anything stands fro with the Stihl saws ...the numbers are very confusing to everyone.
The "i" in the STIHL MS 500i chainsaw stands for the electronically controlled fuel injection system. Stihl first came out with the fuel injected 500i concrete saw
Ahhh. Thanks Fred, 👋👋👍🏻👍🏻
@@FredFlintstone21 So even the i in 500 i stands for an E as in electronic...?????Must be more German babble???
the "i" stands for injected as in not carbureted.
Hey Chris! Amazing video! Cool angles how you made the video. You look good with that stihl shirt and hat on! Definitely stIhl not steel lol! My 500i does the same thing, kinda has a little "shake" as it's ripping through the wood. I have the light bar as well. Is that why it shakes? I have an 064av stihl, 85cc, I need to make a video comparing the two. Both rip very fast!
Awesome thank you!
The tree service guys I know have 500I’s but the 462 is their go-to machine. I say “Still” and all I know is there no “qua” or “kwa” in Husqvarna. The rep laughed and said it’s pronounced “Hooskvarna”. And I hear people say Johnsonred 😂
Yup, Hooskvarna is correct. And yes the 462 is a great saw!
Yup,great new technology Chris. But going to have to stick to my 576 and 395. They both cot faster and last longer than I can
Yup, great saws!
The chain / clutch cover is interesting, looks like it is actually metal, and seems very long.
It is....it's a West Coast Saws.... after market ( better) cover.
The 500i is a great machine, but a bit fickle at times. It seems to prefer a very sharp chain, not too hungry, and a full load on it. A little hard on fuel, but it has power for days. I will say though, they’re really tough to run for limbing or munching brush, IME.
Great points! Yes ..she likes to drink!
I haven't never ran the 500i. I would like to one day
If you need a saw do, it if you want a saw do it, if you have the money for one do it ...BUT if you can't buy one don't because you will HAVE to get one.

The german-language pronunciation of Stihl sounds like the english-language pronunciation of ”steel". If you use the english-language rules of pronunciation, Stihl sounds like "still".
Good to know..thanks!
Good saw and looks like the Cadillac of peavey also
Yup, great saw and great Woodchuck peavey/cant hook!
Still more expensive than an equivalent Husqvarna.even more so once you start adding on aftermarket pieces like clutch covers. I think it would be great if Huskie redesigned their 572 clutch cover to mimic the chip performance of the 592. Still like my Stihl, Huskies and Echos.
Gordy @ WCS makes quality aftermarket parts for all 3 makes of the above brands.👍Even has a YT channel running big saws in big trees amongst other topics.
Yup, good stuff!
nice!
What the Professor. Still? Steel? StihL. Would you buy one? If so 3 outta 10. If not 9 outta 10! Theirs always Homelite professor.
Yes I would buy one...they make great saws!
STIHL with a I not a E. Happy Father's day
So far it is about 50 50 with the pronunciations.
Having no idea how one deciphers stihl saw sizes from their model numbers I looked it up. So it is an 80cc saw. So I did a quick check of the specs against the oppositions offerings in the same size range.
What I found really interesting is that Stihl only claim 5kw for the 500I, which is on par with the other brands 80cc saws. I would have thought the fuel injection would have given it quite the power boost over a carby model, but apparently not. Not sure why it is worth the $300 price premium.
Yup, their numbering system is way confusing...even for the guys that work there!
The thing that impressed me when I first used one is the immediate throttle response, and it very linear power which just gets stronger as you pull harder on the trigger.
When stihl money kicks in
Yup, they are proud of their stuff!
Noticed the west coast side cover immediately, was curious if it has the West coast suspension kit as well, put it in mine and made a significant difference in the handling
I do not know...good question!
Happy Father’s Day Chris. I know that you ran the stihl 462 as well. You seemed to like it too. What’s the difference between the 462 and the 500? Thank you. Love your videos
Yes the 462 is a great saw, not as fast as the 500 but close!
The television commercials and dealers around here say steel, so that's what I've always said. I'm sure it's colloquial
Yup, a lot of words and phrases can very different in certain areas.
Love that cant hook how it picks the wood off the ground!
Yup, they are awesome! WOODCHUCK IS THE BRAND!
There is a bunch of them out there. I like this Woodchuck he has but I have a Stihl. The Stihl ones though are just made by Logrite and orange instead of blue. Would have probably been a little cheaper had I just got the Logrite but the Stihl dealer is right around the corner from me and I was in there for something else and picked up one. I don't really use it as much as I thought I would when I got it. Think it was like $100.
@JesseLJohnson I have a very old cant hook, it's AWESOME but like the pick off the ground feature
