For anyone whose bool tool hot key doesnt work (for any reason), dont skip the video. Do this instead; Select the object you want the bool to be performed on, go to modifiers, search Boolean modifiers, once applied, click on eye droper and select the second object ( in this case, the cube ) If you do not see the section being cut, select the cube, go to "object" click on viewport visibility and change from textured to wireframe.
It's wise to select all the side edges you want to bevel instead of doing one by one individually. And before that, ctrl+A to reset scale&transform object.
The amount of video tutorial I watched that are 1+ hours and I almost didn't retain any info (ADHD) this is arguably the best video out there. I kept asking for a short and sweet video. With the shortcuts, keep it simple etc. Nice job (will try the full course if I get stuck XD)
I've been doing hard surface modeling for the past 3 or 4 months and due to all your videos, they have made my projects so much better! I love the content! Keep up the badass work!
I really appreciate the overview. Blender seems so complex and your videos really cut to the core things needed by a beginner like me. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, this is a wonderful introductory teaching video. There is a new problem at the end. When I use the latest version 4.1, I cannot find the normal setting in the data option.
I've been using Blender for a month, I use Corel, Sketchup, now polygonal modeling, I get the duplicity of vertices, edges and faces, I like doing 2D in Corel, exporting as DXF and converting to Mesh, but I struggle to put things together and especially things with duplicity
Thanks for this, I actually like how you explained to details and also taught how you corrected the things that make the models look bad. Towards the end of the video, you made a correction to the smooth edge, but I can't find the normal drop button there anymore. 🙌🙌 Please how do I go about this?
When I press Ctrl +shift+ B and open the boolean tool dialogue, and the "difference" option is selected, it doesn't make the cutter transparent, what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance, cheers
If it makes your cutter completely disappear, you simply selected the wrong "difference" Boolean. You'll see there are 2 sections after opening the bool tool dialogue : "Auto Boolean" and "Brush Boolean", you might have selected "Difference" in the Auto Boolean section, which apply directly the Boolean modifier, and delete the cutter.
Enable the Bool tool from the addons in order for the Bool tool shortcut to work. Should have mentioned this in the video. Took a while until I figured out why the bool tool menu never showedf up. Newbie here.
yes, right? Is not easy to find a tutorial of HS or SciFi that doesnt use those AddOns, they are awesome but we want to learn how to do it "by hand" :)
i want to learning from them but i can't paying these adones now because 1$ = 50 of the currency in my country but now i don't need them, bool and loop tools helped me @@remola81
In my blender 3.0.0 at mac os i had to add the bool tool by open edit/preferences/add-ons. May be it will be helpful for someone. In other way i can't use shortcut ctrl+shft+b
Greate video and thank you. I have some challenge here. Even though I add the cube on object mode it is moving together with the first object and and also happening with the Bulean cutting object is sticking with the fist one. Why is this happening ?
Does turning on the bool tool cause any unwanted results elsewhere, say for instance if you were doing something unrelated to hard surfacing? I guess I'm just curious why by default the tool is turned off. Also, fantastic video, thanks so much name twin!
Are there more of these step by step videos am VERY NEW to learning Blender I tend to get frustrated constantly searching for videos to learn that are in order an easy to understand.
someone has this problem too? after I bevel an edge (Value 8), for example, after apply it I still have flat faces all across my bevel. I apply auto-normals, and did all the steps but it doesnt look the same as Josh mesh. Same thing happens to me with a cut from boolean, I start to see some artifacts, no matter if I move the cutter in different position and nothing, is there any approach to achieve this? thanks in advance. And Josh, thank you so much to explain so clear and share your knowledge with us. Cheers
The last time I used a boolean negative, a camera was unable to see anything (just black) when it was inside a space the cutter used to occupy even after I applied it. It seems to me that the mesh remains visible in camera mode or is it just me?
When you've activated the Bool Tool Panel using Shift + Ctrl + B, take Boolean Difference from Brush Boolean section and not from Auto Boolean section to keep the cutter visible.
I'm stuck on one part, either the cube and other shape get stuck together, or I'm only able to grab one side of the block and it stretches out instead of moving
Okay So when I Tab to bevel the cutter, and I am in edit mode the square goes back to solid and doesn't show my cut until I go back into object mode, What can I do to see my cuts in edit?
hello I have a question if you want to texture your hardsurface object shouldn't our mesh be in quad I have trouble understanding why on some models there are n-gones?
hey man i want your help when i use box cutter there is a problem like when i use BC on the same object twice the first Boolean get canceled and it makes a copy of the same object how can i fix it i want to send a video of this problem to you how??
In 2:10. I'm struggling with edit mode. You grab a vertex and move it. When I try to grab a vertex (left mouse click), I just get a "select rectangle". I can't grab the vertex. I'm stuck! I can hear a keyboard press at the same time you grab the vertex, so you've missed a crucial detail. What is that keyboard button?
how do i rotate my camera with the mouse (clicking and holding) i can rotate my camera just if i click and hold on this thing on the corner of the screen
Booleans can produce ugly mesh, if you don't clean it or retopo the model won't be subd compatible. But hard surface modelling usually flat anyway, you don't really need subd for it.
hey josh , hope you are well , I have some problem in using box cutter how I can send screenshot to you to help me about it , some bad artifacts showed up... it in just only simple cube and flat surface and I can not understand why this happening . I add more segments to solve it or change some options but did not work
Josh, first time through I missed the step of tabbing back to object mode before adding the second cube ua-cam.com/video/ynuGMQ2-AS4/v-deo.html. Mode is so important for so many things, I wish you'd address this fundamental difference sometime.
All this is good, thank you. But what if ALL the edges of my model needed to be beveled? You did the two at the top surface and then all the vertical edges on all sides. What about the last remaining big 2 that forms the top and the bottom faces of the above model? How does one go about beveling them without breaking the model into fractals?
@3:44 ... absolutely nothing happens for me after I click "difference" ... does nothing at all pretty hard getting these tutorials done when you do exactly what is shown, all for nothing to happen ... arggg, so frustrating

Thanks! Coming from 3DS max and this 5 mins is all I need to get started
What can I say? Effective, friendly and easy to grab.
Wow, that's literally it, Thank You! now the same basic principles gets in a complex combinations as the object gets complex
very cool trick with the beveling the boolean object
Thanks, this is a wonderful introductory teaching video. There is a new problem at the end. When I use the latest version 4.1, I cannot find the normal setting in the data option.
Tanks Josh, big hug from Brazil... Tankyou mate!
What about n-gons? Aren't they a problem? I normally work for videogames so I would be grateful if you explain to me 🙏🏻
Great video! I did not know about the "bool tool" addon. Very cool!

didn't know about the ctrl+shift+b menu. You can also apply your Booleans by doing that same hotkey rather than going into the modifier tab.
Just getting back into it, your videos have been helping a lot thanks man. Cheers!

you probably have found it by now, but if you havent: modifiers > normals > smooth by angle
Great quick hot take. Very efficient and concise 👍
a very good tutorial. how can I find the object or surfaces's topologies while shading. thanks, Josh
Thanks for the video, very useful.
@blenderbros rule!! nice sesh Josh!
nice video but i cant find the Auto Smooth controler and the other ones he have.
That was great, thank you
To bevel next edges , you can use Shift R to repeat last command ;)
Thanks, this is all i needed.
Yes, these kind of videos tutorials are quite very helpful for noobies like me.. thanks
Thank you. Very useful. Hello from Ukraine!
Your tutorials is inspirative. I like them.
Thanks !!! very beginner friendly :)
Josh a lot of my hard surface fantasy stuff is beginning to look you made it. Any tips for finding my own style as an artist?

Thank you very much , really informative . Brevity is the sister of talent 🙏
maatering a good workflow is probably the hardest part.

Awwww thanks!
Great little video mate cheers
any advice for just wrapping my head around this everyday?

How would you get the viewport shading to end up in final render, i like those edges
good kindly tut thx a lot
"shade smooth" is just a feeling of viewing , or this model's surfaces changed?
good tutorial, thank you!
Good video - great bang for buck

Such models are not good for texturing. A texture-friendly mesh is made of quads, indeed.
