    There's one detail that nobody discusses is the vibrant colour palette that Sega used in all its games. Games like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter looked gorgeous with their colour scheme and their glorious 60 fps. Thanks for the video. Cheers!

      Doug R. Except people do talk about it. There’s a whole movement on the Internet called “Sega blue skies” which began with the (now defunct) website “UK Resistance” and spread everywhere. Just Google it, it’s a well known term to describe and invoke that kind of colourful Sega magic.

      Then you need to see the real versions and not the emulation Sega Lord is using.

    • @SDSOverfiend

      @Retro Regulator You know this. Once I seen mesh gates on every shadow in every game he discusses.. I knew Something was off. I own the original to a majority of these titles and I clearly remember thicker polys and transparent shadows. These viewers believe these are the original versions. Can't have the original versions in HD. So this is a terrible false narrative that should be disclaimed. Because VR racing on Sega Saturn is a BEAUTY TO BEHOLD

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому +7

      I have never used emulation on Saturn game I've covered. The mesh you see is created by the RGB capture I use. That's how it comes out looking. The old school composite and S-Video signals on a CRT simply hides the pseudo transparency better.

    Sega Model 1 ran at 30fps. Simply compare VR on model 1 with that of the PS2 Sega Ages version which does run at 60fps. Night and day difference. Model 2 is where 60 fps became a reality for the Sega Model boards.

      Model 1 was capable of 60 FPS, and some elements of these games ran at 60 FPS but the polygon rendering ran it 30 FPS.
      Remember when spec sheets say something like "180,000 polys per second" that would mean 3000 per frame at 60Hz. But 6000 per frame at 30Hz, so they opted for more detail by running the game at 30 FPS in these particular games.

    • @MoonScythe1
      @MoonScythe1 Рік тому +1

      @@nrXic I completely agree with your statement. I didn't mean to give the assumption that the board itself was incapable of 60fps. I'm just saying that all the games on it ran at 30fps.

To be honest, I didn't even make the connection with the Japanese/nuclear thing, but it was a good move to include the apology (especially given how the internet can be).

      32X was just a bad deal all the way around. It had potential had it come in way cheaper and way sooner, making it a different product all the way around(an SVP add on), but Sega really made a mistake releasing that thing the way they did. Every one of these Model 1 games should have been Saturn launch games in Japan.

      Same here. I was not a fan of the Model 1 in its time. I think it was mostly Virtua Fighter. Doing human characters on Model 1 was not to its advantage. They lacked the kind of style you'd see in sprite-based games. It all seemed to be a step backward to me. I've also changed my overall opinion on the topic. Some of the games look excellent now, especially ones that are just vehicles and environments. The smoothness and higher resolution than the home systems could give helps too. I've even come to appreciate what they were doing with Starfox on SNES, which I did not find appealing in those days. I thought that Namco space game show in this video was quite nice looking as well, along with the Model 1 stuff. Maybe it was the purple spaceships.

    • @Kashmir23
      @Kashmir23 5 років тому +1

      I think it’s also a kind of nostalgia we have for these type of graphics. Today games are trying to be so real they lose the artistic view and we also lose a fun factor we will never get back. I’m not saying yesteryear is better, just far removed and we won’t see to many Retro type Games and graphics. We miss this style ...

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 5 років тому +2

      @@Kashmir23 that's a good way of putting it. For me, it's like the uncanny valley concept. My view is that graphics got to a point where they got too realistic and too detailed that it doesn't look appealing anymore. I'd say it looks off in a lot of ways too. I think some of that is due to animation as well.

    I remember being a kid at my local mall's arcade and seeing Virtua Fighter for the very first time. I must have stared at people playing that game for over an hour not being able to comprehend what I was seeing. It was so bad one of the arcade workers checked on me...and when he realized what I was staring at he left me alone. I wound up playing that game for hours that night. I have never heard of Wing War or Sega Net Merc. I want to play both.

    Great video! I'm a sucker for flat shaded polygonal games, there's just something so mystical and interesting about them. It kinda seems like Star Wars Arcade flew under the radar back then. It's funny, many will say that Star Wars Arcade on the 32X was a port of the 1983 Atari arcade game. There was a twin Wing War machine at a Tilt location and they were looking to get rid of it for $100, though one side was out. It didn't sell so they took it to an auction and I haven't seen any Model 1 game on location since.

    Very nice video. Along with other viewers, I think the flat, shaded polygons look quite nice now. Some look better than others. The human characters in VF1 were tougher to pull off at that time. Back in 1992 and 1993, I was not a big fan of Model 1 graphics, especially Virtua Fighter. The polygonal characters seemed a step backward compared to the sprite art(Capcom and SNK were pushing that forward) and digitized graphics at the time(which looked pretty good when it was a Midway game). Despite not liking the graphics at first, I was blown away when I got to play Virtua Fighter in 1995 after a friend bought a Saturn. I got used to that game pretty quick and was pretty good at ducking my friend's high kicks at the last second and then scoring tons of throws. As I got older, I was able to see things differently and have come to appreciate the Model 1 graphics along with other early 3D like Starfox, which I appreciate more now than I did back in the day. On games with a vehicle focus like Virtua Racing and Star Wars Arcade, the Model 1 looks particularly nice. That Namco space shooter also has a great look to it. Great work and thank you.

    2:46 You are mistaken. Virtua Racer runs at 30 frames per second, which was already almost twice as much as the competition. It wasn't until Dayona USA and the Model 2 that 60fps became possible.

    I own 2 virtua fighter arcade games, and the game is still great today! Nothing beats the beautiful polygons on a medium rez monitor, crisp, clear and colorful! The best part is that as far as arcade cabinets go, its pretty cheap these days. Sound boards are tough to get as they are usually robbed from them so operators can keep Daytona USA’s going even today!

    Just a quick correction. The Model 1 games did not run at 60 fps. They ran at 30. They didn't achieve 60 until they made the Model 2 and Daytona USA.

    I love Sega Lords channel and all its content. So beautiful. But there should be a disclaimer that most of the model 1 and 2 arcade games are emulated and they take a big hit through emulation. Less polys and No transparencies. I have these a majority of these games and the shadows are mesh in emulation but transparent on Saturn hardware. This is evident by watching Burning Rangers. That game has EXCELLENT TRANSPARENCIES. BUT THRU EMULATION ITS MESHED. I urge you guys to seek out the real versions of these games on the UA-cam. They may not be HD but they are really better looking

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому +3

      I stated in the episode and the description that the games in this episode were emulation. I do not own the Model 1 originals so that's how it had to be. I'm not sure what you mean by Burning Rangers, however.. Every Sega Saturn game I cover is captured on real hardware. I've never used emulation on any Saturn game I've covered.

    • @stephandolby
      @stephandolby 5 років тому +1

      Burning Rangers keeps its transparencies when emulated through SSF; player shadows and teleportation effects are mesh on both the original hardware and emulators. Also, there's no sense in downgrading from a transparency to a mesh unless it's for speed, and SSF actually allows you to render meshes as transparencies.

    • @SDSOverfiend
      @SDSOverfiend 5 років тому

      @@SegaLordX I see what you are saying... What im saying is I have access to a Lindbergh without the online dongle to play a fully working version of Virtua Fighter 5:R. We also have access to the Model 1,2, 3 arcade card that has the games stored up to full graphic capability. With that being said..Some of the arcade games you are showing have transparency issues. Even. That's beyond the point tho.. The point is.. Unless you record from the Saturn itself with the original components. Burning Rangers looks like shit anywhere else other than the Sega Saturn with its original components. Bottom line with all due respect Sega Lord.

      @@SDSOverfiend If it's made with mesh and dithering than I don't mind seeing it that way even if it was intended to look better through a softer CRT with original hardware. Most people arent viewing youtube through a CRT anyway. I only dislike emulation if the sound is off or the movement is glitchy.

    • @SDSOverfiend
      @SDSOverfiend 5 років тому +1

      @@Lightblue2222 True... But GamingPalooza has a high fidelity series some including Saturn games on the original hardware. I don't know what tools they are using but the emulation comes out crispy. Nothing takes a hit. But I agree.. Once the sound takes a hit... It's unacceptable.
