This is the style of RPG that I'd want to make. Something that looks like the old Square soft games. I don't like a lot of the other assets. They look way too stiff and generic
I like RPG Maker as a way to create art for lack of a better way to put it. I am a reasonably capable coder and sometimes do other things in other engines, but when I just want to relax I put on some lofi and I do parallax mapping, or write a little adventure and place it in a town I build up from RTP tiles. It is a bit like an adult coloring book. Some of those little sessions have become game jam games and in two cases fairly complex projects. I thin RPG Maker is unique in how pleasant it is to just play around with.
@@aradia509 I guess it was all UA-cam tutorials, really. I learned the most when I tried to solve a problem on my own, vs following a code along video. That way you know how to do the project, which you can focus on getting more efficient in your coding habits.
I agree that this is a great way to get into game development. I tried godot (another great option), gdevelop, unity, and unreal. Those engine took too much time to get anything done and i hit constant roadblocks with those. I use rpg maker mv and I love it. I've made a small project in just 2 weeks that was around 2 hours long. Granted i put some time into that (around 50 hours of work for 2 hours of gameplay)but it was so worth it and so satisfying. Not to mention the HUGE community around rpg maker. There are a ton of tutorials, forums, and plugins that are free to use to really make your project stand out.
I remember thinking rpg maker games aren't good, or maybe are good but don't look pleasing and battles seem uhh, and also text boxes, and thought if u wanted to make a good rpg just use gamemaker (which is now free, I'm using it now) like undertale and deltarune, but the game Omori really showed me I was wrong (and I think the usual visual in rpg maker games was the actual problem) Edit: All the games shown here in the video have the usual problem I'm talking about even tho they don't have the same artstyle, idk what it is
The prototyping capacity of RPG Maker can be quite surprising. With the built-in ability to input code in more recent versions, you can break the mold and do anything. I'm making a tactical RPG in RPG Maker because I want exploration phases occuring in the same maps as combat. Other makers seldom have that flexibility.
I made it so that projectiles can meet unexpected obstacles in their trajectories. This will allow monks and ninjas to catch arrows that fly by them, even if they are not the intended target. It will also allow the warriors to stand in the way of enemy fire with their armor and shield to protect the party. Once you can intercept projectiles, you can make is so that moving about in formation becomes critical for survival. And I want to create a game that reflects that.
Which version of RPG maker are you using? I have interest in also making an RPG with tactical turn-based combat on the overworld. I wasn't certain if I'd have to use Godot or perhaps one of the versions of RPG maker is flexible enough for it.
Learning the ropes was a journey of a couple years. I'm using RPG Maker MV. It has all the scripting capabilities I need, plus it has a pathfinding function that you can use. I don't feel the need for anything fancier. I got my copy at a discount for 20$. MZ never drops this low and basically does the same thing. VX Ace uses another scripting language, but has similar capabilities. In the learning phase, it's better to go as minimalist as possible, especially if you want to actually own your work and not owe it to the author of a plugin.
@@claude-alexandretrudeau1830 Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for when MV goes on sale then. I'm currently working on a smaller project in 2k3 which should help familiarize me with the engine a bit, but I can definitely feel the lack of (native) scripting when trying to automate certain things.
I used a lot of RPG MAKER 2000 before I got into game maker like 20+ years ago now. What I really liked was how some people turned it into a zelda-like game. You could sacrifice one of the 2 buttons they give you for a sword swing or a jump or something. I'm not sure how the engine has progressed but if they allow more buttons then you can definitely make a more dynamic zelda game.
I remember being heavily into RPG Maker back when people still used rm2k and rm2k3. You have a tutorial on a story rich scripting? That's what I'm trying to do, but can't find anything for scripting what I need and want to remove battles and have them set as choices. I want a story rich and choices mattets.
Before I go on a rant that could be pointless; Do you want to disable and enable battles through a menu or do you want combat to be depicted as scenes where the action is described through text?
The neat thing is that if you don't want battles to exist, you just don't make them. Concentrate on the options you really need. Like textboxes and events. With the basic assets, you can prototype your scenes and write anything you want into textboxes. Soon, you will need switches. Whenever you want to ask your game a yes/no question, the answer is switches. Did you pick [x] item? That's a switch. Did you talk to [x] character? That's another switch. Then, you'll want the game to count things. For example, dating sims determine the amounts of care a particular girl has for you with a particular number, which can increase or decrease depending on choices and events. That number is a variable. If you want your project to be a game and not just a novel, you'll want to translate interactive concepts into numbers, which are stored as variables. There is no tutorial per se for what you want to do. Start with the beginning. Experiment with the tools at your disposal. Soon, you'll be able to identify your needs and ask precise questions in forums or look up these answers. RPG Maker makes eventing and mapping really simple. Start with these. Then, you can add some mechanics behind with textboxes, switches and variables.
I bought RPG Maker first to make a prototype, but my idea is to make an isometric game similar to how some RPG scenarios used to be made in AOE2 back in the day. I used to be a modder of that game back in the day, always present on AOK Heaven, before even AOE2: HD came out, and the fact everything is HD and super nice made my AOE2 style pixel- drawing skills obsolete lol. I wonder if I can make combat in RPG Maker MZ more "real time", not as in action-based games, but kinda like how AOE2 does, which is simply an auto-attack animation when two collision boxes touch each other, not something high-octane or anything. If I remember, although I did very little "modding" in that game, Mugen, that 2d fighting engine which is the basis of Touhou: Hisoutensoku, worked with touching collision boxes too. I'm fine with turn-base as well though, it's just that I'm more "accustomed" with RTS style of combat in RPG-like scenarios like micro-ing, kiting, throwing your beefiest "tank" characters onto the path of an incoming enemy, while you bombard them with ranged units, taking terrain elevation in consideration to gain buffs, etc... TBH, I don't plan to move to other engines or create my own if RPG Maker provides everything I need to create my idea, which isn't much. The only really essential stuff I need is a nice "trigger system", A GUI that can handle lots of info if I for example want to introduce crafting, farming or other sorts of minigames and handle Isometric "2.5d". Also, Big maps, although I don't mind if they are presented in smaller chunks, but I wish to make a map as big as some AOE2 maps where the largest was 512x512 tiles with hundreds of units moving around and dozens of animals and all sorts of buildings triggering things, etc...
I've decided to try after a online lobby hosted dungeon crawler, i have the necessary plugins to do this. I think i might use a dice based battle system or keep it default, much akin to ancient dungeon vr there will be relics that will help or hurt your run. and if the host or the party dies in the dungeon you'll get kicked out but you can rejoin with no consequence. I'm working on a way to make death in a online run less annoying with the no game over plugin.. it's a challenge to say the least.
So I have this program on my Nintendo switch. I don't understand how I could make a game that other people can play or utilize the game to put on to different consoles, if I'm making it on switch
You can't, the Nintendo Switch version allows you to share your game on their platform and other people owning RPG Maker on a Switch can download it and play it.
I've seen some crazy stuff made in RPG Maker 2003, which sold me on the engine's potential so many years ago. And that was before the built-in capacity to implement code of your own. VX and VX Ace implemented RGSS when they saw people hacking XP to great results. And now, MV and MZ use the more accessible JavaScript as a language.
Yes totally but the process of doing is quite difficult because you'll have to study the documentation of the game engine itself and for you to understand the engine you'll have to study javascript to make a plugin in doing so, because essentially plugin is how you can import and make youre own custom mechanics of the game and how the game revolves to your own liking, I hope this late reply helps 😊
When I was like 18 I worked on making a game with rpgmaker. But the problem I always faced was: no unique soundtrack, no talent to draw and scripting was so confusing to me. So I just stopped. Was fun while it lasted tho. I ended up making a cave and a village filled with random encounters and nier soundtrack 😅
I have a question: Why are the games I make so big? I created seven scenes and plots, and used some plug-ins, but the size was actually 5G. I tried to delete some original files, and the total pixel assets I drew did not exceed 5mb. I would like to know. the root of the problem
i was excited to make use of RPGmaker MV, and noticed it was one of the latest versions of RPGmaker. After examining it recently, i feel like i was scammed as it's very limited in what it can do and is only capable of the most basic RPG creations. Or seemingly. There appears to be lackluster information on what the different RPGmaker versions can do unless i'm missing something.
Hi I know this video was made years ago. But is it possible to have like a dialogue % chance of maybe convincing a character to do something or whatever? Like in fallout u have the different dialogue options
If you check out the video I made on how to randomize anything it'll show you how to do that. As for the percentage... Hmm I'm not sure how to do that. I'd probably make a charisma skill that only allows for dialogue options if it's high enough. (Check out my tutorial on variables for that it's pretty simple to set up)
I think you'd need to actually set up stuff before you get to that part. It's not meant for that like engines made for stories so it's a lil hassle but you can and you get extra choices if you want to
can u pleas tell that visual novel made in rpg maker in which thing ? visual novel ? i downloaded now visual novel it is only like anormal visual novel but in your video visual novel totally difrent so please tell in rpg maker which one type of downloaded they did it in visual novel.rpg maker mv , visual novel or anything else please tell
I'm wondering if is possible to create a mix of Visual Novel and Adventure games. Something simple. Nothing fancy. I know there's Adventure Game Studio (AGS) as well, but some features of RPG Maker seem like a better fit for this idea. (My experience is only with Unreal, but I was thinking about something simpler, that wouldn't be too heavy on visuals - even though I'm an artist. I even have an Adventure Point&Click kit in my Epic's vault, but man... I don't know. Maybe using something I don't need to code anything, even in Blueprint, would be a good thing for me now)
Absolutely. Just have character busts appear on screen during dialogue and it's basically a VN. The only difference for the adventure part is it's not point and click, but walk and examine
Yes thats possible but in doing so you'll need a to have a backbone of rpgmaker itself and familiries with the basic and when you have same knowledge background i will have to advice you to learn the game engine documentation itself and this process will be difficult espiecially you have no experience in javascript which is the scripting language for rpgmaker this way youll then make a plugin to set youre own custom mechanics that fits youre preference
Also, its possible with some creativity to make an action rpg instead of turn based, you can create target shooting sections and ive even seen a racing game

What is the game at 1:04? thanks! great video very informative!
reouija sleepover by hatoge
Which RPG Maker tool would I use to make a similar side-scrolling game like the Flesh, Blood and Concrete game you showed?
You can use any RPG maker , just use invisible walls as a ceiling so the player can only go left and right. That's the most simple way
I've decided to try after a online lobby hosted dungeon crawler, i have the necessary plugins to do this.
I'll make my own game soon, I'm calling it "The Therapist", it will be good
So I have this program on my Nintendo switch. I don't understand how I could make a game that other people can play or utilize the game to put on to different consoles, if I'm making it on switch
You can't, the Nintendo Switch version allows you to share your game on their platform and other people owning RPG Maker on a Switch can download it and play it.
Great 👍
3:40 So it *is* possible to make a boobalike on RPG Maker.
There is plenty boobalike rpgmaker game ;)
@@killeak999 I'd always heard the RPG Maker engine couldn't handle the technical aspects for massive booba and would simply crash.
Hope you're gonna make a complete series..
very nice customizations...
are these made with mz or mv? are they both capable of making these kinds of games?
as far as I know MZ is just an updated version of MV so they are almost the same but people are still making games in older versions as well.
@@inkribbontutorialsi Only have the switch version 😭 i can't' even put plugins or do most of the things in this video
What is that game at 3:00, starting at the beginning of the chapter prototyping?
I have a question, can I make a game like Stardew valley using rpg maker MV?
Yes totally but the process of doing is quite difficult because you'll have to study the documentation of the game engine itself and for you to understand the engine you'll have to study javascript to make a plugin in doing so, because essentially plugin is how you can import and make youre own custom mechanics of the game and how the game revolves to your own liking, I hope this late reply helps 😊
Great video, quite informative. Can you make all these types of games with RPG Maker XP?
What's the second game that was shown for the visual novel example?
cool. cool.. i have a question though can you make a choice based story game on rpg maker?
You definitely can. It's just a matter of variables and switches.
@@maskedblanks7774 well , well, well isn't that awesommee?
is this rpg maker mv? just thinking of which to get, to get started
thanks!
is it possible to mix up the types? like a visual novel with RPG elements?
I cant seem to find a tutorial for making a visual novel where u can walk around and stuff... I really wanna make something like that
When I was like 18 I worked on making a game with rpgmaker.
3:40 my God
the best side scrolling visual novel I play made in RPG maker is cherry tree high comedy club
3:40 good googly moogly
i was excited to make use of RPGmaker MV, and noticed it was one of the latest versions of RPGmaker. After examining it recently, i feel like i was scammed as it's very limited in what it can do and is only capable of the most basic RPG creations. Or seemingly. There appears to be lackluster information on what the different RPGmaker versions can do unless i'm missing something.
i love you for that
Hi I know this video was made years ago.
(Check out my tutorial on variables for that it's pretty simple to set up)
@@inkribbontutorials thank u I will check the video ☺
how did you make the first visual novel, character design looks on point!
What version of RPGMaker do you recommend the most?
so how do i actually use it to make a story rich game? it just opens to the few download things.. :/
I think you'd need to actually set up stuff before you get to that part. It's not meant for that like engines made for stories so it's a lil hassle but you can and you get extra choices if you want to
Is it possible to make a DND campaign using this software?
3:39 scared the shit outta me
can u pleas tell that visual novel made in rpg maker in which thing ? visual novel ? i downloaded now visual novel it is only like anormal visual novel but in your video visual novel totally difrent so please tell in rpg maker which one type of downloaded they did it in visual novel.rpg maker mv , visual novel or anything else please tell
I'm looking into adding side scrolling/ platforming sections in my rpgmaker game, is it possible in 2k3?
@@inkribbontutorials " it's not point and click, but walk and examine" Oh, indeed! ^^
The game "omori" inspired me, I want to make a horror game on it
Which is the best RPG maker to get?
Would it be possible to do a fallout shelter / WOW WOD garrisson simulator where you just send minions to collect/do missions?
Yes thats possible but in doing so you'll need a to have a backbone of rpgmaker itself and familiries with the basic and when you have same knowledge background i will have to advice you to learn the game engine documentation itself and this process will be difficult espiecially you have no experience in javascript which is the scripting language for rpgmaker this way youll then make a plugin to set youre own custom mechanics that fits youre preference
@@Jack-so1hz Thanks for the answer !
what game is this 3:58
I also want to know!
Are there any youtube channels that mainly give tips for Nintendo switch users who don't have the extra features in game pc people do
3:39 hahah!!
I knew there was gonna be a trans flag in that characters room before they went in, lmao.
Lmao
Damn Goddess of order! Calm tf down! Lololol
i liked this video
0:55 please tell me how you did it so the enemies attack animation shows and it shows the actors face
It's a plugin "Yanfly Engine Ace - Ace Battle Engine"
What’s the game used as an example for the visual novel
It's called "Reouija Sleepover"!
Maybe we can make Fire Emblem with it? But we need to find a way to create the enemies' AI.
It's possible with srpg engine in rpg maker mv
Also, its possible with some creativity to make an action rpg instead of turn based, you can create target shooting sections and ive even seen a racing game
i may have played the blue palette game (escaped chasm???) years ago, but the dialogue feels so wrong
3:40 MOST IMPORTANT PART 👾
Hello.I want to make a Story Rich style videıo game in RPG MAKER MV but here is the hardestpart= Drawings.Do you have any idea how can ı draw every cutscene?where ?
Yup drawing is the hardest part but it can make it so memorable. Maybe try to have few characters?
Remember the more work you put into a game, the better it will be
I wanted to make a point and click adventure game in RPG maker, but I don’t know if there is any way to click some thing in RPG maker
I think some newer versions and plugins allow that, but I'm no expert.
Can you do your own art if you want?
Bro there is no nahda none youtube tutorial from start to finish on how to make a game with every game engine out there, trust me I have looked. But I did decide to go back into RPG maker & start from there & heck once I get character assets it might just be good enough. Nice video.
So are you drawing all this doing all the art yourself?
