I believe in MV and up (maybe even VX, I didn't use that one) they were renamed to something else; but the name had stuck.

ok this video is 4 years old but I'm still gonna comment because as I am attempting to make my first game using RPG Maker (that way I don't have to get bogged down with making all the art/music/code/etc) this was actually a really great video. Pretty much every other video I've looked at on this topic is just 20 mins of them dogging on the default assets and even RPG Maker as a whole. The end conclusion usually being either don't use RPG Maker or disguise it so much you can't tell it was made with RPG Maker. Which aren't exactly bad points (I'm trying to use some community made assets to vary up the art) but I am specifically wanting to make that jrpg style and not just a puzzle horror game (which seem to be the go to alternative style). Finally finding someone talking about both the good and bad of default games while keeping an overall positive attitude was super refreshing.
Thank you for making this video. I'm one of the aforementioned RM creators with no art skills and I get very disheartened hearing people both in the community and on YT tear games apart for using default RM and say you just should bother publishing if you don't have full custom assets. Seeing that some people can still enjoy a game because of its story or gameplay even if it's using default RM gives me hope.
RTP is indeed Run Time Package... With older versions, your players could download RTP seperately, so developers didn't have to add them all to their projects. As of MV this is not the case anymore.
I've been a bit preoccupied with other projects to help me advance in my personal career so I haven't had much time to work on Wayfarers. :( But I'm always keeping notes and thinking of ways to improve it when I'm eventually able to work on it again, hopefully sometime this year.
RTP standing for Runtime Package is correct. So named, because it's a package of default assets you install to your computer that will be accessed by an RPG Maker game at runtime.
bro i have been making a game series for my friends in MV with only the default assets (ONLY the base ones, no dlc) for 3 years because i literally forgot that you could use plugins and i was too lazy to do own sprites, sounds and music (each of the games is about 0,5 to 2 hours long, depending on how you play) this looks normal to me edit: okay lol i cant believe people upload these broken 3 minute games and wayfarers is really cool
It is officially called "Run-Time Package". rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-packages/ However that name is only suitable for versions prior MV, since MV drops the idea of the RTP (being a redistributable default collection of assets that games made with the program could access as long as you have it installed, in order to potentially decrease download sizes).
Same here. My first attempt at a game, so using default assets and have used a couple "template maps" though I have tried to at least edit them some. As I learn I may go back and redo them as well.
Thank you for the review. I enjoyed watching it. I decided that instead of writing books that no one will read, I'd better make games like Novells. RPG maker has enough assets, so I don't need to manually draw everything by myself! But then I realized that it is more interesting to create a world, a game with RPG Maker. So, now I'm in process of creating a maze-exploration game. With the default assets. It won't have the tactical battle system, and I'm still not sure if I will add enemies there. So, if I complete that game, I will share it here.
I wanna make an RPG Maker MV game. Gotta get some practice first! Just a general idea of the plot: "A boy named Anton falls into another world that bases its entire society around magic and sorcery. He then learns he’s part of a prophecy going on with an evil sorceress named Eldia. He is destined to collect the eight Stones of Light to open the door to a powerful blade that can end Eldia and her forces once and for all. Along the way, he meets and partners up with a colorful cast of characters. A girl named Katelyn, a boy named Zane, and a girl named Terrina."
I have a copy of Eternal Eyes for the PS1. It just happened to be in a PlayStation I found at Goodwill several years ago. I haven't really played it, but I'll take your recommendation after watching this.
I'm only 4 years later watching this vid BUT either way great content. Got me motivated and excited for my own projects! (Now let me check if you did a part 2)
maybe since people thought that RPGMaker built in assets are only meant for prototype phase, which after the mechanic is established, the assets are expected to be replaced by original assets
Now that we know the Switch version of MV is coming out, this would be very encouraging to those who are forced to use the limitations of the console version...like me. For some like me, people simply can't get the PC version due to varying circumstances. So we need some good feedback on devs who absolutely-through no fault of their own-MUST use default options.
the thing is that the XP and VXA "RTP" is hardly a "runtime package" since its just a bunch of assets, imo RM"s true "Runtime Package" is the "Game.exe" file included in every game
Well, just remember. I’m going to be making a game called lemon quest, which uses the games assets. And uses the pre-made maps. Mostly because I believe somebody will hate the maps, and calling them too hard to explore in. Which is the main thing to do when playing my games.
Older visual novels from the late 80s to early 90s were either in the normal format aka text box plus images or they were top down. Heck, all JRPGsactually were originally based around visual novels... The rpg elements were added in to give VS game play, but, because of this addition JRPGs were born as a genre.
Imo. Best rpg maker game I played is Medieval Chronicles and its spin offs. VasantJ really good at using the original assets and actors to make his detective games.

Devs need more constructive critic videos like this. That's how we get better games!
i wish i was made with Default RPG Maker Assets
I had this on in the background and you got my attention bringing up eternal eyes, first tactics rpg i got for christmas in the early 2000s
RTP is indeed Run Time Package... With older versions, your players could download RTP seperately, so developers didn't have to add them all to their projects. As of MV this is not the case anymore.
Dude if Wayfarers actually gets finished I would actually be really hyped, it sounds really good
I've been a bit preoccupied with other projects to help me advance in my personal career so I haven't had much time to work on Wayfarers. :( But I'm always keeping notes and thinking of ways to improve it when I'm eventually able to work on it again, hopefully sometime this year.
@@wayfindersgame1261 Ah, well take your time! Completely understandable that you’re busy and I hope you do well in your endeavors!
Your review of James VS The World had me straight dying. So funny.
New sub! Trying to get into RPG Maker again during the pandemic
Wayfarers sounds legitimately like something I'd buy on Steam!
This motivated me to keep working on my little weird game egg that I've been sitting on while trying to learn the engine. Good times.
whoever made wayfares they need to do more because I really want to play it
The creator is still working on it! This video is one of the main reasons for it yay! :D
liking this video just for the Eternal Eyes reference! That was my favorite RPG as a child and it left a lasting impression on me. :)
Enjoyed this a lot! Would love to see another one of these videos with some more default-asset RPGMaker games!
This is very wholesome. Thank you for this video.
RTP standing for Runtime Package is correct. So named, because it's a package of default assets you install to your computer that will be accessed by an RPG Maker game at runtime.
bro i have been making a game series for my friends in MV with only the default assets (ONLY the base ones, no dlc) for 3 years because i literally forgot that you could use plugins and i was too lazy to do own sprites, sounds and music (each of the games is about 0,5 to 2 hours long, depending on how you play)
this looks normal to me
edit: okay lol i cant believe people upload these broken 3 minute games
and wayfarers is really cool
The RTP in the right hands (and some GIMP editing) could still make an attractive looking game.
I remember eternal eyes, is like monster collecting tactical strategy.
Hilarious without being just flat out mean for not having the most polished game. Please make more of these!
Never thought I'd hear someone reference Eternal Eyes. Good job! :D
Very good video, I like the way you review, taking the time to appreciate the work behind every game.
13:24 Oh, nice, it's Ron the Raccoon! He does super cool art ^^
The final game looked genuinely good.
The last sovereign is also a game that uses mostly default assets and it's amazing
It is officially called "Run-Time Package".
rpgmakerweb.com/download/run-time-packages/
However that name is only suitable for versions prior MV, since MV drops the idea of the RTP (being a redistributable default collection of assets that games made with the program could access as long as you have it installed, in order to potentially decrease download sizes).
This just gives me confidence with my game
This is an amazing video! You gave each game a chance to shine. I'm using default assets and this gives me ideas on what to avoid.
Same here. My first attempt at a game, so using default assets and have used a couple "template maps" though I have tried to at least edit them some. As I learn I may go back and redo them as well.
@@djkouza always room to redo and refine once the bare bones are down. Like in writing, a bad page is better than a blank one.
TheGamedawg: Sometimes you just want to make a game despite having no artistical talent.
Me with no artistical talent: *cries*
That's why art commissions exist.

7:35 nice to see that wasn't platitudes. I've seen a lot of RPG use a "standard fantasy setting" as a facade.
Every time I watch a video like this I feel better about my rpg and feel inspired to finish it
what spinny thing probability random display visual was that in the cut-scene ...i need that in my life
there's an rpgmaker game made with default assets called Big Trouble in Little Hoboken Maine.
I suck at art & just don't have the resources to commission/hire artists so this actually made me feel a lot better!
26:24 That song is one of the RM2k3 remakes in the MV bonuses.
"Let's just bite the bolt and jump into it". Famous last words. Also this was a really good review
Scwarfbandito
I will never forget this and will name my first pet after it
we also made games with default rtp assets, namely maven, shiori amiga and fireheart legacy.
4:45 listen to how he pronounces "I'll" lol! 😂😂😂
Wow. I was so looking forward to Dude night.
But that Berserker one seems legit.
Can we get more videos like this?
I laughed so hard when he ripped the wall with his hands.
the thing is that the XP and VXA "RTP" is hardly a "runtime package" since its just a bunch of assets, imo RM"s true "Runtime Package" is the "Game.exe" file included in every game
I'm making a game just for fun, so I'm learning from this. Thank you!
It would have been really cool if James VS The World was a sequel to James and the Giant Peach in game form.
These reviews were so wholesome :')
Well, just remember. I’m going to be making a game called lemon quest, which uses the games assets. And uses the pre-made maps. Mostly because I believe somebody will hate the maps, and calling them too hard to explore in. Which is the main thing to do when playing my games.
You sure do give devs the benefit of the doubt. It's a double-edged sword, though.
