Here’s why: all military branches spend more time planning a mission and making contingency plans before action ever occurs. There have actually been more scrapped missions that never happened, rather than mission that were carried out in all of military history. Planning a mission can take weeks, over even months (depending on how big the mission is). Because of this, there’s nothing for the troops to do other than train and wait.. So the bulk of most soldier’s careers are spent waiting for missions to happen over sitting in actual combat.

Literally every person who has ever had a job doing anything can look at a movie where that job is portrayed and tell you how it’s all wrong. It’s a movie, don’t worry about it.

Here's the issue with that: For decades now, certain movies, particularly war movies, have been marketing themselves as being realistic. You can't really say "It's just a movie, it's not supposed to be realistic, it's all entertainment," when the marketing for the movie is saying: "This movie is realistic." As easy as it is to be apathetic, sometimes you just gotta call bullshit.
My father was a Master Sargent in the marine corps during WW II and Korea. He didn’t talk about war but once I asked him how he was able to get his men to leave those boats when they knew they had a 50% chance of dying and is answer was…..because they have 100% chance of dying if they don’t. That was the last question I ever asked him about war.
Ww2 was dark. This might not 100% be accurate but i recall being taught that the nazi special forces "totenkopfstaffel" Killed anyone who wouldn't charge in trench fights.
I guess that would make you disembark rather swiftly. The invasion of Normandy is the operation that I would have feared the most as far as I know. Imagine artillery landing with bullets pinging then gate dropping and men piling up blocking the way wounded or killed on the bow. Those still aboard have to get over those that aren't going any farther the entire time knowing 8 mm rounds are incoming still. It had to be chaotic and terrifying as well as disheartening. I guess that's why it burns me like fire to see such ignorant disrespect when someone waves a Nazi flag at a protest in the US . What could they be thinking.
People who actually fought in D-Day said Saving Private Ryan was the most accurate recreation of what they experienced. Crazy how a producer can re create such a historical moment.

Watch John Wick, he literally changes clips every 8-10 shots, every time he switches guns, he takes the clips off the dead bodies to match.... it's amazing his hand eye coordination. While John Wick 1 is a better film/story, 2 is even more technically proficient (I realize it's an imaginary world and he kills 100+ people every movie, but I mean his ability). They also avoid cutting away from him during those extended fight and shootout scenes. His judo/bjj is amazing too. No way I bought Common able to go hand to hand with him.

Tropic Thunder is the most realistic war documentary ever created. That movie told so many truths that soldiers have to quietly live with every day. So the next time you see a vet you tell them, "I never knew the struggle until I saw Tropic Thunder."
@@jamesedington3153 I think that was the point of his comment. Navy SEAL man has no experience with that type of combat. Saving Private Ryan was extremely accurate in the combat portrayal especially in the beginning of that movie. There weren't any real special tactics that he is most familiar with used in that invasion. Their plan was to use thousands of men with no real advance combat training beyond basic to run up the beach while getting shot at with machine guns and artillery with the hope that 1or 2 out of every 10 would make it past the beach and be able to clear the offensive line for the next wave. The plan was simply strength in numbers. Navy SEAL man has no experience with that and no U.S. service member since Vietnam has experience with that.
The thing about saving private Ryan is that its more realistic than other war movies. That doesn't at all mean that it's truly accurate to real life. Once you have seen real combat footage it becomes very obvious that Saving Private Ryan isnt that realistic, just more so than other films.

The last Rambo movie was pretty realistic, he killed over 10 AK47 wielding dudes in a field using nothing but a single fire crossbow. Loved it. Nobody even shot back. 😭😭😭

It's a long story so I'll shorten it up. When I was about 17 I was involved in some stuff I shouldn't have been involved in. It was at night time and we were out in the country. When the cops showed up I got away and I was running down a dirt road on a farm next to where the stuff was going on. All of a sudden I heard someone rack a shell into a shotgun and I stopped dead in my tracks. All I can say is that with me anyway, that sound worked. Turns out the guy with the shotgun was someone I knew and he let me go, but he did say he would talk to my old man about this later. Thankfully he never did. Well I guess he never did, because if had, I'm pretty sure my dad would have killed me... LOL
I am a regular soldier, and I thought I was the only one to catch the charging handle was still back. The same points he makes pisses me off as well. This dude is so true. The Navy seal stuff I can't speak on, but the training, practice, and briefings is something everyone in the military has experienced and is mind numbing and boring. We sit through 8 to 16 hours of PowerPoints to drive a damn Humvee, I can't even imagine an actual operation from beginning to end.

So what I gathered is Lord of the Rings is the most accurate war film ever. Not quite 50 hours as he suggested but you get over 11 hours. And 90% of it is just walking around.
Yeah he reloads on time every time, you can watch Kill Count videos on it and he is constantly changing mags. Even a few times he will run out and use it as melee.

I love the movie but I personally see it as being science-fiction as much as The Terminator movies,Aliens and Starship Troopers are.I I think it should have marketed itself that way(as science fiction and fantasy) because outside of the SEAL Teams being a real organization-there isn't anything else that's even slightly realistic about the movie. Navy SEALs is basically a science fiction,action-adventure fantasy movie. I think if you're making a movie or book and it's fiction and you market it as such,there won't be a problem with people saying it's unrealistic because that's part of the point.Former Navy SEAL Jack Carr writes popular fiction books and he just goes to town with it but it works because he doesn't claim that they're anything other than fiction.Same thing with Tom Clancy and Brad Thor books. I'm going to be writing comics and books in the future and likewise,they'll all be fiction and fantasy. I would love to see a sequel to Navy SEALs made(with different actors,obviously) but one that's either more realistic or that's just a full-on science fiction movie.
Haven't seen that one, but as a general rule there's nothing less objective in the world than american docus about ww2. With the possible exception of russian docus about ww2..
My great uncle said the only thing that was missing for him was that he had several days of seeing dead paratroopers in trees. They’d been caught on the branches and had been shot in their harnesses.

He also fought at Burma, and every minute I spent with him, I would ask him about the war, which he loved talking about. He was in the Royal artillery, and fought at Ramree island against the Japanese. He told me about the american, and gurkha friends he made. He used tell me some words in hindistani, which he learnt whilst he was there. I've got all his medals and papers from the war, including a bible he was given to carry around during the war. I miss him so much, and I am happy, that I made the most of the time I had with my grandad.
The only inaccurate thing that a D-Day vet at the War Memorial in Bedford, VA told me was the beach was about 400 yards wide while in the movie it's nowhere near that.
Maybe because it was based on book written by journalist who was with them whole time. And two marines who actually were there worked as consultants during filming.

@@Goose21995 that depends on the trigger itself some nail guns require you to depress the front guard and then pull the trigger in that order for every nail shot .. although you can usually modify this with the different trigger (usually black, grey) that comes with the nail gun … I believe black is for holding the trigger down and tapping and grey is for depressing the guard then pulling trigger

Silencers in computer games are the most inaccurate. Silencers increase a bullets velocity, yet every game reduces the bullet velocity if you attach one.

You can speak to most combat infantrymen worth their salt and receive the same info plus more. I can tell you what an interpreters asshole looks like after getting gang raped by a platoon of Afghan National Army Soldiers. Or what a MAXPRO looks like after it was destroyed by driving over 500 pounds worth of anti tank explosives, and what the fireteam that was inside loked like afterwards. Fact is, the Navy actually funds and heavily assists in Hollywood movies that showcase the marines and seals. There is one scene in the museum where you never see a reload or him grabbing another pistol and he fires close to 32 rounds...but yeah the rest of it was so accurate you could just assume he maybe had a double stack clip lol
@Sean Grant they mentioned how they would reshoot some scenes and edit down the shots because it was inaccurate but at least they tried. John wick has some realism but mostly it is for the central character. He is a badass after all. Still gets hurt and shot and stabbed. That suit that prevents bullets from penetrating in all areas should not be real. Even though suits do exist that absorb the kinetic energy. I believe there is a guy who makes it. Video right here on UA-cam. The suits get damaged and are with holes as well. Not a firearms expert but just pointing out what I know about this stuff based of other experts.
True, I have trained and competed in BJJ, Muay Thai and boxing for years. Huge boxing and MMA historian (as short as MMA history goes). Any MMA or boxing movie is so hard to watch. I think it was in the movie "Southpaw" where the boxer comes out of his depression and begins to train again with his new coach that teaches him how to slip rope. The guy was a fucking champion boxer and has never slipped rope before? Out of all the flaws, that was probably by far the worst
Being in the horse racing game my whole life, movies like SERATARIAT, DREAMER, and damn near every movie depicting the life is a farce. Although the story about the great filly, RUFFIAN, with Sam Sheppard was surprisingly spot on. Horse trainers are typically a**holes. The movies make em look like your milk man.

Say what you want about that border crossing scene in Sicario... it’s still one of the best scenes I’ve ever watched in a war type movie... the tension before and during that scene is so captivating, minus the mistakes I thought they did an incredible job capturing just how tense it would have been crossing the Mexican border given the circumstances. One of my favorite movies of all time.

I've been an editor for almost 25 years and one thing I notice about movies without even trying is lack of continuity. For example, if a guy has his hands free in one shot and then in the very next shot his hands are in his pockets, I notice that shit like someone farting in my face.
Or shots that are mirrored... I just recently watched Alexander (2004), and pretty much the entire intro scene with Ptomely is mirrored - even when they pull out the map of Europe / Asia Minor, it's all mirrored. That pisses me off.
I'm with you Dude. I drive my wife nuts pointing stuff out. One of the most rewarding things for me is when I watch an excellent movie over again, I start watching the actors in the background. To see them act their parts out even when barely in the scene makes me appreciate their craft. Or you see idiots who screw up. Try it some time and you'll be surprised at the errors you see with editing and just stuff they figure you won't see in the background. Probably not a guy's suit going from brown to blue, but someone's drink going from full to empty to full to half within a few seconds of screen time. That kind of thing..
Must have been a low budget project, most higher budget projects litterally have a supervisor to assure continuity/ consistency in the movie and make sure scenes match up.
as an editor, please, PLEASE, cut scenes short. EVERY movie i see, in the middle of a high-tense scene, where the protagonists have to HURRY, they stand there and look at each other to create this pseudo-emotional effect on the viewer. all i'm thinking is: RUN
I hate the scenes where they are briefing on the flightline as they walk to the plane. That plan has been written, wargamed, rewritten, rehearsed, re-rehearsed, and memorized. Nobody is briefing mission details as they walk to the bird.
The STI pistol he uses in John Wick is custom double stack 9mm that's a competition pistol and holds more ammo than the majority of factory handguns. So him shooting it 20 times isn't an oversight or unrealistic
Saw an interview about the movie too and they actually said they did take account for detail about every bullet fired. However because of editing we dont always see every reload or weapon switch.
He said with john wick they did a good job, also in the movie he never fires the pistol more then 15 times in a row before reloading, 3 times in the movie he reloads at 14 shots.

My two pet peeves in movies: 1. Drinking out of empty cups ... 2. Sports movies where the athlete isn’t athletic! Examples: Jerry McGuire - Cush isn’t athletic and can’t throw. Only a few minutes in the movie but almost ruined it for me. The Longest Yard - Adam Sandler looks less athletic than Jerry O’Connell in real life but for this movie, Adam took QB lessons from a former Pro QB and you can tell in the all the “one shots” of him throwing. Excellent form and some strength and accuracy!
Everything he said after 10:35 was spot on. Exactly what it was like fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Almost all of our time spent on mission planning, negotiating for aircraft, submitting requests through the JOC, working the logistics, and conducting briefs. Very little time you spend over there is actually kinetic operations.

I envied the grunts, because they were given an AO, launched and stayed in the field patrolling for bad guys for most of their deployments. We spent most of our time gathering intel, planning, requesting resources, briefing, getting approvals, launching, rolling up bad guys, egressing and then more mission planning, briefings, approvals...rinse, repeat.
In the opening scenes of Shooter, Mark Wahlburg engages a helicopter with a Barrett M107 50bmg rifle. He cycles the bolt manually for each shot, except the M107 is semi automatic. Blanks much?

Here's the issue with that: For decades now, certain movies, particularly war movies, have been marketing themselves as being realistic.
You can't really say "It's just a movie, it's not supposed to be realistic, it's all entertainment," when the marketing for the movie is saying: "This movie is realistic."

My father was a Master Sargent in the marine corps during WW II and Korea. He didn’t talk about war but once I asked him how he was able to get his men to leave those boats when they knew they had a 50% chance of dying and is answer was…..because they have 100% chance of dying if they don’t. The invasion of Normandy is the operation that I would have feared the most as far as I know. Imagine artillery landing with bullets pinging then gate dropping and men piling up blocking the way wounded or killed on the bow. Those still aboard have to get over those that aren't going any farther the entire time knowing 8 mm rounds are incoming still. It had to be chaotic and terrifying as well as disheartening. I guess that's why it burns me like fire to see such ignorant disrespect when someone waves a Nazi flag at a protest in the US . What could they be thinking.

Watch John Wick, he literally changes clips every 8-10 shots, every time he switches guns, he takes the clips off the dead bodies to match.... it's amazing his hand eye coordination. While John Wick 1 is a better film/story, 2 is even more technically proficient (I realize it's an imaginary world and he kills 100+ people every movie, but I mean his ability). They also avoid cutting away from him during those extended fight and shootout scenes. His judo/bjj is amazing too. No way I bought Common able to go hand to hand with him.

Lots of World War 2 vets have said the beginning of Saving Private Ryan is accurate. It was a different type of war than Navy Seal man is used to.
He said it was accurate in how they portrayed what the soldiers went through but not the actual combat

Saving Private Ryan was extremely accurate in the combat portrayal especially in the beginning of that movie. There weren't any real special tactics that he is most familiar with used in that invasion. Their plan was to use thousands of men with no real advance combat training beyond basic to run up the beach while getting shot at with machine guns and artillery with the hope that 1or 2 out of every 10 would make it past the beach and be able to clear the offensive line for the next wave. The plan was simply strength in numbers. Navy SEAL man has no experience with that and no U.S. service member since Vietnam has experience with that.

The thing about saving private Ryan is that its more realistic than other war movies. That doesn't at all mean that it's truly accurate to real life. Once you have seen real combat footage it becomes very obvious that Saving Private Ryan isnt that realistic, just more so than other films.

It's a long story so I'll shorten it up. When I was about 17 I was involved in some stuff I shouldn't have been involved in. It was at night time and we were out in the country. When the cops showed up I got away and I was running down a dirt road on a farm next to where the stuff was going on.
All of a sudden I heard someone rack a shell into a shotgun and I stopped dead in my tracks. All I can say is that with me anyway, that sound worked.
Turns out the guy with the shotgun was someone I knew and he let me go, but he did say he would talk to my old man about this later. Thankfully he never did. Well I guess he never did, because if had, I'm pretty sure my dad would have killed me... LOL

I am a regular soldier, and I thought I was the only one to catch the charging handle was still back. The same points he makes pisses me off as well. This dude is so true. The Navy seal stuff I can't speak on, but the training, practice, and briefings is something everyone in the military has experienced and is mind numbing and boring. We sit through 8 to 16 hours of PowerPoints to drive a damn Humvee, I can't even imagine an actual operation from beginning to end.

As far as the Navy stuff goes, Battleship was the most realistic depiction of the Navy that I've ever seen. That was pretty much every day for me.

I love the movie but I personally see it as being science-fiction as much as The Terminator movies,Aliens and Starship Troopers are.I I think it should have marketed itself that way(as science fiction and fantasy) because outside of the SEAL Teams being a real organization-there isn't anything else that's even slightly realistic about the movie.
Navy SEALs is basically a science fiction,action-adventure fantasy movie.
I think if you're making a movie or book and it's fiction and you market it as such,there won't be a problem with people saying it's unrealistic because that's part of the point.Former Navy SEAL Jack Carr writes popular fiction books and he just goes to town with it but it works because he doesn't claim that they're anything other than fiction.Same thing with Tom Clancy and Brad Thor books.
I'm going to be writing comics and books in the future and likewise,they'll all be fiction and fantasy.
I would love to see a sequel to Navy SEALs made(with different actors,obviously) but one that's either more realistic or that's just a full-on science fiction movie.

He also fought at Burma, and every minute I spent with him, I would ask him about the war, which he loved talking about. He was in the Royal artillery, and fought at Ramree island against the Japanese. He told me about the american, and gurkha friends he made. He used tell me some words in hindistani, which he learnt whilst he was there. I've got all his medals and papers from the war, including a bible he was given to carry around during the war. I miss him so much, and I am happy, that I made the most of the time I had with my grandad.
The fucking bullets in the landing scene are not realistic at all.
The only inaccurate thing that a D-Day vet at the War Memorial in Bedford, VA told me was the beach was about 400 yards wide while in the movie it's nowhere near that.

From my limited experience in Iraq as a Marine: Generation Kill (HBO series) is the most realistic representation of OIF I have seen.
My marine friend did 3 tours and said that’s the best one he has seen.

@@Goose21995 that depends on the trigger itself some nail guns require you to depress the front guard and then pull the trigger in that order for every nail shot .. although you can usually modify this with the different trigger (usually black, grey) that comes with the nail gun … I believe black is for holding the trigger down and tapping and grey is for depressing the guard then pulling trigger
But you just know when a nail gun is introduced at the beginning of a movie that someone is going to get shot through a wall with it later on.

True, I have trained and competed in BJJ, Muay Thai and boxing for years. Huge boxing and MMA historian (as short as MMA history goes). Any MMA or boxing movie is so hard to watch. I think it was in the movie "Southpaw" where the boxer comes out of his depression and begins to train again with his new coach that teaches him how to slip rope. The guy was a fucking champion boxer and has never slipped rope before? Out of all the flaws, that was probably by far the worst

Being in the horse racing game my whole life, movies like SERATARIAT, DREAMER, and damn near every movie depicting the life is a farce. Although the story about the great filly, RUFFIAN, with Sam Sheppard was surprisingly spot on. Horse trainers are typically a**holes. The movies make em look like your milk man.

Say what you want about that border crossing scene in Sicario... it’s still one of the best scenes I’ve ever watched in a war type movie... the tension before and during that scene is so captivating, minus the mistakes I thought they did an incredible job capturing just how tense it would have been crossing the Mexican border given the circumstances. One of my favorite movies of all time.

I've been an editor for almost 25 years and one thing I notice about movies without even trying is lack of continuity. For example, if a guy has his hands free in one shot and then in the very next shot his hands are in his pockets, I notice that shit like someone farting in my face.
Or shots that are mirrored... I just recently watched Alexander (2004), and pretty much the entire intro scene with Ptomely is mirrored - even when they pull out the map of Europe / Asia Minor, it's all mirrored. That pisses me off.
I'm with you Dude. I drive my wife nuts pointing stuff out. One of the most rewarding things for me is when I watch an excellent movie over again, I start watching the actors in the background. To see them act their parts out even when barely in the scene makes me appreciate their craft. Or you see idiots who screw up. Try it some time and you'll be surprised at the errors you see with editing and just stuff they figure you won't see in the background. Probably not a guy's suit going from brown to blue, but someone's drink going from full to empty to full to half within a few seconds of screen time. That kind of thing..

as an editor, please, PLEASE, cut scenes short. EVERY movie i see, in the middle of a high-tense scene, where the protagonists have to HURRY, they stand there and look at each other to create this pseudo-emotional effect on the viewer. all i'm thinking is: RUN
I hate the scenes where they are briefing on the flightline as they walk to the plane. That plan has been written, wargamed, rewritten, rehearsed, re-rehearsed, and memorized. Nobody is briefing mission details as they walk to the bird.
The STI pistol he uses in John Wick is custom double stack 9mm that's a competition pistol and holds more ammo than the majority of factory handguns. So him shooting it 20 times isn't an oversight or unrealistic

Saw an interview about the movie too and they actually said they did take account for detail about every bullet fired. However because of editing we dont always see every reload or weapon switch.
He said with john wick they did a good job, also in the movie he never fires the pistol more then 15 times in a row before reloading, 3 times in the movie he reloads at 14 shots.

My dad is a Vietnam veteran and he said that Platoon was the most accurate in terms of that particular war.
That may have had to do with the fact that Oliver Stone served in Vietnam.

2. Sports movies where the athlete isn’t athletic!
Examples:
Jerry McGuire - Cush isn’t athletic and can’t throw. Only a few minutes in the movie but almost ruined it for me.
The Longest Yard - Adam Sandler looks less athletic than Jerry O’Connell in real life but for this movie, Adam took QB lessons from a former Pro QB and you can tell in the all the “one shots” of him throwing. Excellent form and some strength and accuracy!
As a musician, I can feel this guy’s pain. Every time I see some actor holding a guitar, I get panic attacks.
Same with any medical scenes where they bring out the “shock paddles” …. I think I’ve seen it done correctly once. You can say … I was in “shock”

Almost all of our time spent on mission planning, negotiating for aircraft, submitting requests through the JOC, working the logistics, and conducting briefs. I envied the grunts, because they were given an AO, launched and stayed in the field patrolling for bad guys for most of their deployments. We spent most of our time gathering intel, planning, requesting resources, briefing, getting approvals, launching, rolling up bad guys, egressing and then more mission planning, briefings, approvals...rinse, repeat.
