Today, lemme explain WHY these 'cute', viral animal videos are problematic. I'll break it down for you so you understand the impact of these videos and why you should look past the happy music paired with these videos to really consider if what you're laughing at and sharing is cute or cruel.

I'm so glad you addressed shaving double coated dogs. I'm a dog groomer and where I work I can't turn away a client we can only inform them why it's bad and we have two German Shepards that come in and get shaved to stop shedding. Which it doesn't! We have a great Pyrenees that use to get shaved and he developed alopecia and liver spots bc his skin shouldn't be getting direct sunlight. People need to be aware of this and I'm so glad it was addressed. There are dogs that do need grooming but if you have a good groomer they will tell you if your dog should be shaved or not.

I passed this video twice while scrolling through my recommends because I wasn't sure what kind of video this would be. But, I'm really glad I took the time to watch it, very important information. I had no idea about double coat shaving, now I know better. Thankfully I've never had a double coated dog before so I haven't made the mistake of shaving them. However, I've definitely had/made negative thoughts and comments about pet owners who don't shave their dog, especially when they've brought a dog that appears to be bred for cold weather and is now in a hot climate. My family lives in Las Vegas, it gets really hot here, and I was seriously concerned about our new neighbor's husk possibly overheating with a full coat.

Thank you for this video! Seeing children abuse dogs gives me so much anxiety. I've seen *several* videos where children step on dogs, the dogs tolerate but "whale eye" or eventually move, and the parents/guardians just stand there and laugh. Child endangerment and animal abuse, so "cute" 🙄 It's definitely about a lack of education/understanding but also empathy. A child standing on a small dog is the equivalent of an adult standing on another adult. That's uncomfortable at best, and life-threatening at worst. People really need to be educated on animal behavior. This is how dogs get put down. Irresponsible ownership/parenting.

I saw one a while ago about a rabbit and a dog 'playing'. The rabbit is clearly showing aggressive responses to the dog (who is definitely showing play behavior), but everyone in the comments is just talking about how cute it is they're playing together.
Like no. That rabbit is fearing for it's life to the point that it's risking death to try and chase the dog away.
Same with the "bunny playing with leaves" video. The bunny is leaping up and striking at/attacking the leaves in an aggressive response to a perceived threat. It is SO stressful for them!

The only time we shaved our husky when I was a kid was right after we got him. Eli was a stray that wandered around on base but he was friendly and he didnt have a chip so we kept him. He was badly matted and miserable, he kept him inside as much as possible while his coat grew back. It grew back fine but it took a lot of time.
When dad was restationed to Texas we asked a professional groomer if we should clip Eli and he said no. Eli managed just fine in Texas with one of those inflatable pools in a shaded place to cool down in on very hot days. He managed for seven years until he got hit by a car and we put him down.

The local animal shelter I volunteered at for years would always do a care meeting before anyone adopted their pet which included general things like diet, housing, walking/potty, etc but we always included pet specific information like grooming so I remember for double coated dogs we always stressed not to shave them (esp because I lived in Tampa, Florida). Our vet told us whe we told her our dog was a husky. She stressed not to shaver her unless it is medically necessary. During summer, we always used a small plastic pool filled with cool water and she loved it. She would run through the pool or the sprinkler.

There's an amazing substitute for shaving your dog in the summer. It's absolutely revolutionary, it's incredible, it keeps them from shedding everywhere, and it keeps them comfortable. Plus, it's super affordable. It's: Brush Your Dog Regularly (tm). It also helps prevent matting and skin issues as a bonus! What an idea!!!

Natalie Carrillo Their coats are double for a reason. It’s awful to shave them because it takes away the dogs ability to cool and heat itself. If you have a double coated breed and you live somewhere hot, it’s best to clip them a little, ensure their undercoat is groomed out, and walk before it’s too hot and after it’s cooled down

    • @j.ashley9152

Emzotic yes, and just FYI I’m no
Professional but anyone who sees this and wants a husky.... do ur research!! They aren’t just beautiful.... they require a lot of knowledge on the breed. Jade Hansen no it’s not. If u live it in a hot climate. It’s just fur. Huskies don’t have any more special need than any other breed. But actually it’s the fur that gives them the special need for colder climates. Not the other way around. These braindeads...

I'm glad you made the distinction of "double coated" breeds having issues with being shaved. I've gotten some comments for cutting my yorkie mix's hair short. I'm not sure I could keep up with a few feet of hair all over his body or how much he'd enjoy that. Then there's those pictures of tiny dogs a couple times bigger than they would be without tons of matting. Idk. Dogs have different kinds of hair, some that will grow effectively indefinitely. .-.

I had a Pom/Eskimo mix that so many ppl suggested to have shaved and his entire life my family has always said no cuz it damages their coat and health so much. Also I guess there are some ppl that don’t even know their dogs are double coated. I have a cattle dog mix with super short dense hair, and over 7 years of working with dogs and groomers. Apparently the poor treatment of sugar gliders is super common and it makes me so sad. My ex GF wanted to get 2 sugar gliders but she couldn't. She still did extensive research and knew all these things like their proper diet, climate, companionship, bathing/cleaning care, all that. And she was willing to literally turn her bedroom into the sugar gliders bedroom. She'd change everything for these little guys because she loves them so much and it makes me so sad that many people who get gliders aren't like that. They just want a cool creature that looks cute, not a companion, a living breathing thing to care for and love and make comfortable. It's sad.

And a lot of the times, they criticize others for not doing it their way, because they think it’s the only right way. Those are the ones I dislike. Example: They say you should only use water bowls for hedgehogs because their tongues can get stuck in water bottles. But they don’t realize that their tongues only get caught in water bottles with springs, and that bowls often end up having feces in them due to the hedgehog dipping their paws in.

It is true any dog can snap. Mine did. A year ago, I was at my friend's house with my dog because my friend has her brother. Anyways, the next door neighbor's younger kid came over and started to "play with the dogs". She pulled on their ears, tails. We told her to not do that but she refused to listen to us. My friend even asked the child's mom to tell her child to stop. But she didn't. It was then that I heard a small cry from my dog that I got pissed. But before I could call my dog's name, she turned around and snapped at the kid. I was in shock. My dog is normally a very laid back dog so seeing that surprised me. The mother then yelled and ran over to her child that was now crying. She called my dog "aggressive" and took her child home.
After that, she never came over to the house and my dog became afraid of other people.

I'm no zookeeper, but I always get triggered when people do the exact opposite of what signs say. I only touch animals I am told I'm allowed to touch.
I once went to a zoo where an exhibit houses spitting cobras (which the printed info in the zoo said was a species known for being nervous), and there was a sign that says, "DO NOT TAP THE GLASS." Guess what the idiots did, which scared the living daylights out of the sleeping snake. The poor thing suddenly stood, showing the hood, looking like it was breathing fast (hyperventilating?) like how a person would when they're in a close to death situation.
This is the only message I have for them. 🖕

@@tracyjacobson3510 Well, I visited the Crocodile Farm on Davao. I still get the impression that it's like a zoo, but whatevs. I admit that the care there didn't really reach my standards (pond water ain't deep enough), but people who visited had to ruin the one good thing, which is the signs that tell visitors to bugger off and leave the glass alone (for the snake enclosures).
If I ever make a zoo, then I'm literally gonna put some fencing that will keep their distance from the snakes enclosure. 8/ Because, these people will just outright ignore everything you tell them.

I both wanted to smack my hands very loudly and scream in the kids ears, as well as tell the parents to knock some sense into there kids.

I recently was at the Boston aquarium and while there, I saw a little girl tapping hard on the glass of a smaller tank with only one fish in it. I hurried over and, careful as to not make her sad or something (especially since her mom was right there looking at other fish), i gently moved her hand away and calmly reminded her to not tap the glass, as it may scare the fish even more. She stopped tapping and simply watched the lil guy swim n stuff, until she and her family went somewhere else to see other fish. Though i probably looked over protective to anyone who may have noticed me, I felt happy inside, like I did something really good. Ill admit it, even i have to work hard to hold back from tapping the glass to, say, get the attention of a brightly colored moray eel or make the octopus move around some more, but ive learned over time that its not what you should do, especially for the sake of the animals.

On a side note I find it interesting that rarely anyone gets sad when a shark gets killed, when they're truly one of the least dangerous animals in the world. Then if that hippo had gotten killed everyone would have a fit even though they're one of the most dangerous animals ever simply because they're cute.
Either way I'd be very sad and a bit ticked off. Animals are being animals, wild or not, they're just following their instincts and just trying to survive. If someone gets mauled by a lion, replacing that lion won't do anything, a lion is just being a lion. That new one could very well kill someone too.
Zoo's should preach about respect for animals, yes a wild animal is dangerous, they can kill you. Executing them makes it seem unnatural for that animal to act that way.

We knew it was bad to shave a double coated dog so we never did, but we had an old golden retriever who really loved getting shaved, it was her favorite thing. So, we shaved her every once in a while because it made her so happy, and she loved having shaved fur. And, since she was too old to go for walks or spend too much outside we decided that it was worth the risk (we only started shaving her in the last two years of her life to try and make it a little more happy for her, cause we were trying everything and she just wasn’t having a good time towards the end)

They barely want to teach children about taxes and actually useful things when they become an "adult" and they are now deciding to teach them how to react to other people so animals are the not even on their mind. What they need to do is give a class to every potential owner and what's stopping people from just ignoring lessons. Like the people who ignore the signs at the zoo and still mess with the animals in the enclosure. Even if the sign stated the reasons why it is bad there will still be people who don't listen. Just like there have been so many people who ignore the "Don't Drink and Drive" warnings even by people who went to jail for drinking and driving.

      (TL;DR at bottom)
That's only if you implant these classes at a young age. And most cases where children need to learn how to treat an animal they aren't even in school yet. So classes for Adult pet owners with knowledge of how to teach their future children if they ever have any. Or Parents of young children who are looking to buy/adopt lessons with said children before they can get said pet.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm putting down, but I guess I kind of am. I am a language major and have taken a class for teaching a language which has given incite to teaching as a whole and the efforts put into the schooling system in America. I say that cause school can be different in other countries and can have some differences even within America. It takes a lot to get new subjects added to curriculums as mandatory or necessary. Unless people who see the benefit of people learning how to appreciate an animal becomes the head of education in every county within America it will just be a well-meant option. I say this because so many people try to get other languages added to foreign language and to be seen as beneficial but they are shut down. Firstly because the heads of education don't see the benefits of a language that does not pertain to a country where America has exchanges with. The other is if it passes that first step there is not enough people willing to teach it or they do not want to cover the books that would have to be made for students to learn with. Teaching is much more than what people think and I've had that idea before I even got into that class and didn't want to teach and my thoughts solidified after taking that class cause it gave me a glimpse of what teaching is like and I still don't know everything.
Teaching can be rewarding and with the right people teaching, very beneficial, but there is a reason why people and teachers complain about being underpaid for their job.
I just realized I sent an essay at you and I apologize for that.
TL;DR: Education systems are gatekeepers. There is more to teaching than people think. Well-meaning gesture but most won't view it as necessary. Possible classes for people who are about to get pets with all involved attending.

Like, the other animal, sometimes hurt, is usually getting jerked all over the place and both are getting super stressed out while whatever is happening. Just put down the damn camera and help the animal.
One I really flipped out over on Twitter was a dog dragging a cat by the scruff of the neck in the snow, into the dog's dog house. That dog dragged that nearly catatonic cat FAR. The cat could have been hurt in other ways, but I've been hyperthermic before- before your muscles stop trying to keep you warm and totally give up- they fight for warmth, they get tight, you're shaking so hard you lock up, any step, any jarring motion and you feel like your muscles are tearing.
I can't imagine me being back in that agonizing state getting dragged around and jerked around... put down the damn camera and help the damn cat.
Or the one where there's an upside down tortoise and another one flips it back over on it's belly... it takes the other one a while to do it- the entire video I'm fuming because the one on it's back can't freakin' breathe.
But yeah, when I flip out over that I'm a snowflake that doesn't realize they're just showing how much animals care and I should lighten up.

That’s not always the case. Have you ever met a caique before? Those birds can NEVER be trusted around small animals or children or even another caique it wasn’t raised with. Birds can easily snap a hamsters neck and caiques although being relatively small compared to a macaw can snap all the bones in the hamsters body.
No smart vet recommends caiques to be kept with any other birds even ones twice it’s size unless it’s another caique that the bird grew up with.

We once brought our Aussie to the groomer and picked him up HORRIFIED that he was shaven down without asking us. His coat has never been the same. The grey undercoat is the same length as his top coat and much fluffier, and the top coat is now coarse and stringy vs how silky it once was. He is a black tricolor aussie, and now much of his black coat is grey due to so much undercoat being visible. This was about 2 years ago, and it seems to be permanent damage.

@@rainyday1928 Yeah its really sad. I've heard stories like that. At my shop if we have to do anything other than what was discussed at drop off we call the owner before and confirm it's ok. I'm sorry about your dogs coat :(

Some of these videos were horrifying! The hamster one was just scary to watch and the poor basset hound... I don't understand how people can find these videos cute or funny, because some of these are torture and some can end really badly. I think your reactions were quite reasonable and I completely understand the negativity you felt towards these.
