Band heads need to understand one thing: B-CU's band is not run based on y'alls opinion. At Bethune-Cookman, the focus is squarely on the school's student and alumni base. What band heads want does not matter to leadership. The band plays those stand tunes because the B-CU crowd loves them. The band will add routines to almost any stands tune. It works for them and for their crowd, but it doesn't work for others.
Yall can't be serious?!?! B-CU has an UNDENIABLE SOUND OF POWER dega is in a class that is way too low to be compared to a great band such as Cookmans. "Cookmans songs are old that's why they sound good" are you serious?? If you're gonna battle youre gonna show up and play your best regardless to how new or old and if that was degas best... then...tragic... this shouldn't even be a topic of conversation. but since it is from a musicians stand point Cookman is waaaay cleaner and waaay better presented dega tried *and failed*, to crank that's it. their stand point was 'who's louder ' not who plays better or whos the better band. Cookman won hands down. Come better next time

I wish people on here would understand the concept of musicianship! Just because a band sounds loud, doesn't mean that they're a great band. Bringing the heat to a band doesn't make them great, it just show how ignorant they can be like TC. TC has no control over their sound, so why are they even considered great in the first place. Yes BCU is loud but what they have over TC is that it's a controlled sound and its full. We need to seriously get it together.
I notice that Talladega is being more energetic this year which is real good. The dancing and the sound is wayyyy better and balanced. They have new drums also. I'm loving them.

Bethune is obviously gonna sound incredible on songs they've been practicing/playing for years, especially when its pretty much their only go to songs for battles and zero quarters...
Cut the bullshit. Every band has songs they have been playing for years and still don't sound as good. What about the field show? most of that music was new, did that sound any worse?

I did not say that. Again, I'm arguing that their book sucks. If they're gonna play the same rap tunes for years and nothing else, then OBVIOUSLY they are gonna sound incredible ON THOSE SONGS. Also, any bandhead using common sense would realize when I refer to Bethune's book, I'm talking about their stand tunes, not field show/dance routine music they play a few games and never again. Maybe I could've worded it differently, or maybe you're a little bit sensitive when it comes to someone critiquing the so called almighty Bethune. Who cares? I said what I said and I stand behind it. All bands have certain flaws; they don't have to be musical.
I agree about the book but that is not what you said the first comment. Your over simplifying something much more complex than your making. Playing the same songs over and over wont make your band sound good, which was my point. I'm not a band head, I'm a musician. song selection is a matter of opinion and ALWAYS will be but a band should always look and good. There is no objectively good song selection or book. Sensitive? No. What you wrote was a big misconception and I replied.
BCU was the better band in this battle. Hands down. Dega is good at blowing but it's more to music than just playing loud.
Cookman is the one who needs a more to music than playing the same "rap tunes" in every battle. How can you people logically justify that? I don't care how good BCU sounds at this point because of how redundant they are. I would hate if all bands did that boring crap. What would be the purpose of watching them?!

with all of your opinions. You can say a
lot of things about BCU. You can say
they are too big, or they have too many DM, you can even say their actual
members of the band are Ugly, (Just playing…LOL), but to EVER say BCU is a
boring band, makes me question how much you truly know or understand about musicianship,
dynamics, precision, intonation, and performance as well as you credibility to critique
any marching band performance besides what makes you FEEL good. BCU is the epitome of consistency in
musicianship. I have nothing against TC and I respect their band, but to
even think TC is on the same level as a BCU or many other proven historically
dynamic HBCU marching band, is telling a lie. I believe BCU out played, outperformed,
looked and sounded better than TC in every category. I don't dislike any
band but I know people are amazed by how LOUD TC plays, but that is not the
true determination of a great band. In my opinion, TC plays every song on
level "10" with no dynamics and the percussion is over powering the
horns on every song. If you knew anything about percussion, you
would understand that percussions should NOT be Heard, but Felt. All of their
drums are nowhere near tuned as they should be and none of their cadences are
rudiment based. In addition, I don't think they see the importance or let
alone have the capability to play tunnel base rhythms. TC is a clear
combination of Southern and Jackson State. That's not a bad thing, but it
sure is not original. To not see that is to be blind to a fact. EVERY
HBCU band has something that makes them original and TC does not have that
yet. O no, wait a minute, TC does have something original about
them....THEY ARE JUST LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS...
The music BCU played is what they
always play. All bands do it…… Yes, it can make a band a little stale
playing the same stuff over and over, so we agree there. I have noticed
when people have nothing negative to say about a great band, the typical
response is that they need to play/do something different. BCU does play
a variety of songs but you have to keep in mind that the season has not started
and the version of each band you saw last week was the quick version because
they have not had enough time to learn a whole lot of knew songs or they are
saving their new stuff for game day. In addition, I challenge you to
articulate any other points of negativity about BCU besides the music is old
and they are boring. Even though I pointed out a lot of negative things
about TC, I can also talk about the good things I saw. Their showmanship
has improved from last year. They executed a full drill and preformed a
respectable dance routine which they did not do last year. I understand
TC is relatively new and has a long way to go before they are considered in the
class with the better known and historically sound HBCU marching bands.
At the end of the day, we like what we like and I do respectfully disagree with
your points, but it’s all good. At the end of the day, we are all in the
HBCU marching band family and I have nothing but love for TC. By the way,
I did not attend BCU but did march on one of the greatest HBCU bands. (In my opinion) To me, there is nothing better than HBCU
marching bands. Thank God for UA-cam…..

Cuz they are balanced. It's not that there not as loud as last year it's just there balanced now. They had to many baritones last year which made them unbalanced cause they were blasting over the whole band. And the basses are balanced as well. They stay down so that they don't over blast everyone else
The bass drums have power stroke head on the so no matter how loud your band is u will still hear the shitty bass drum players ndd those heads suck dey sound like someone's kick in your front door

That’s BS. A band should be able to achieve balance regardless of chemistry. They should NOT need to reduce certain instruments to achieve balance. That just proves how out of BALANCE their priorities are. They’re changing the chemistry of the band to enable as many people as possible to play as loud as possible.

The biggest thing people forget, is the band is supposed to play for their crowd, and their crowd loves their book. That's why they stay on it.

On this level, Song wise... TC Won It. But BCU Won it On Control and Balance. TC Can Crank but it takes Balance and control to play and not crack under pressure. Both bands are the same size and TC is way over blowing each other. BCU Balance because they don't force the sound out to over blow each other. Plus on a side Note TC Doesn't really need all them Bass Drums. Which i agree with the person saying they don't need all them Bass drums. SU has 4, which are the same Size. Only time you need 6-8 Basses is if you are playing treble basses which BCU has.

BCU is a great band but they need to be blowing, if they could really BLOW they could be on a higher level than they are now. TC gets off the staff, BCU stays within the staff. But both bands are Amazing

I played at Cookman and I HATE OUR OLD AZZ BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But sound wise there is no comepetion for us we are in a league of our own especially on the field .

Honestly Tc sounds better than last year I definitely hear improvement. Bcc sounds very good u can def hear the difference in musicianship, they're just boring and kinda square.
Dega sounds okay when there playing whole notes and half notes other than that they sounded HORRIBLE. TUBAS CANT STAY TOGETHER. Hell the second song was like they didn't even know it with people playing at the wrong spots. This will go down like always all the bands will sound the same blaring ass baritones, tubas trying to scream, trumpets hanging over, and bones riding chords.......AND THEN COOKMAN COMES THROUGH TO CLEAN UP THE MESS. EUPHONIUMS SINGING, tubas dark and rich, trumpets full in the lower register and trombones playing more than just chords
Dega was OK. I like the energy and intensity. However, musicianship was lacking. BCU was powerful but balanced,and inotation was great(typical BCU). Dega was blaring and balance was lost in the process. Trumpets were lost on some selections. I will say Dega sounds good for a three year band. However should focus more on cleaning up the sound and music dynamics. BCU is always good, but I think they're becoming too predictable. Please get some new music. Been playing Vice Versa since I was in 10th grade( almost 8 years ago lol). Energy and Song Selection are the only weak point of an otherwise phenomenal band.
