    My first solo landing was amazingly smooth especially when my instructed landings were bumpy. The Hersey Bar laminar flow wing of my Cherokee 180 would abruptly quit if I didn't hold it off correctly. Took awhile to learn this. That landing was so smooth, I could hear the wheels rumble when they touched the runway but I actually didn't feel the landing. My confidence soared after that experience. I have to say that my instructor was a distraction during those first attempted landings. He didn't know when to shut up. He was a good pilot but didn't know how to teach. I changed instructors.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Рік тому

      Nice! I'm glad you've figured out landings!
      I eventually had to change instructors also. So I can relate.

    • @kimskislalom
      @kimskislalom Рік тому

      Yes, the 180 is a bit nose heavy and you have to pull a bit harder to keep the nose up in the flare.

    Brings back a lot of fond memories. All my cross country's were done using pilotage and VOR's (there was no GPS back then). Interesting part was getting invited into the tower to get my logbook signed. All my flight training was in Cherokee 140's and 151's.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  Рік тому +1

      I need to do another pilotage and dead reckoning flight. I hated all the planning when I was in training, but I really enjoyed the sense of knowing where I was during the flight.
      Cool to be invited into the tower! With covid, I've asked to come up a couple of times but been denied.

    You asked “what’s your Favorite part of human flight”, I’d say what you just showed in you video. Climbing into an airplane, either solo or with pax, cranking her up and climbing into the blue sky. Going wherever I wish, when I wish and how I wish is just awesome. Nothing (for me anyway) can compare ✈️😁. Scott. KLZU

    Great job. I remember my first solo cross country's well. A good feeling and accomplishment. I eventually went on to fly my PA-28-181 coast to coast and in all types of weather. The little place is a work horse.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  2 роки тому

      Thanks! I love flying to travel. I now own a PA-28-140 that is not likely to be able to get coast to coast - at least not over the mountains. But after I complete my instrument rating in it, I will look to change to a more capable cross country machine.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the encouragement. I agree that I handled it, but I still don't like that landing. There were very low winds that day and I was not pointed down the runway until right before touchdown.
      That's not something I want to become a habit.

      Welcome!
      XC was my absolute favorite part of training! XC flying is still my favorite part of flying. I just flew solo from NC to WI to land at my hometown's GA airport. 637 nm, 6.5 hrs logged. Was absolutely awesome!
      And don't worry too much about the struggle. It took me 175 hours to get my private. I thought I was never going to be able to get there. If I can do it, you can do it.

    I tried to do this way back in the Fall of 1980. Lasted for two semesters, dropped out and joined the military instead. Just turned 60 and soon to retire and feel what you are doing is what I could try again. I'd always felt I left something undone and has been in the back of my mind for a year now. If only I could commit to the $8,000 to $10,000 I'd need to spend.

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  3 роки тому +3

      Yeah it's definitely expensive. And I'm not stupid rich or anything. For me it was just a matter of deciding what other things I'd have to give up in order to be able to afford flight training. it's not been easy, but I'm happy with the choice.

    Did you shut down at all and go to the bathroom. I did my second solo last week. I made sure I took care of business before I started back. Also, make sure you have extra water. I did not have enough water and was thirsty and dehydrated after I landed at my final home airport.

    isn't dead reckoning. just looking outside the plane and using land marks to determine where your position is?

    • @1dullgeek
      @1dullgeek  2 роки тому

      No. That's pilotage. Dead reckoning is the calculations you make based on wind and airspeed and time to figure out how much fuel you have left to get to where you're going.
