Hey Dusty, I wanted to take a moment to extend my gratitude for the incredible day of 1:1 instruction you generously provided. Your dedication to helping me consolidate my fundamentals was beyond brilliant, and I can't thank you enough for your patience and expertise. Not only did I learn a bike load from you, but I also had an absolute blast! Your sense of humour and teaching style made the experience unforgettable, most amusing and educational. I couldn't have asked for a better mentor to guide me through refining my skills. And let's not forget about that priceless moment when I made you "dab"-even if it didn't make the final cut, it's a memory I'll cherish! Until our paths cross again, I'll be hitting the sand with newfound confidence, thanks to you. "Rubber down," dab when you have to, and looking forward to the next adventure! With deepest appreciation, cheers and gears Lisa 🤙 youtube.com/@fourwheelednomad 🙏
This a great video. I also need to “consolidate my fundamentals.” 😉 A great attitude can overcome anything. You learned those skills and look like a pro!
Couldn’t agree more-would highly recommend this chap to one and all. Totally understood my comfort zone and just how far to evolve it without setting me to Survival Mode. We had a lot of laughs that day. 😝
Grateful to be Dusty’s sand-fearing student and genuinely come out at the other end feeling more comfortable, equipped with the fundamentals dialled in. Cheers and gears! Lisa
Hi Dusty. I am a motorcycle instructor here in the UK, and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. I know very little about off road riding, but off road or on it the fundamentals are always so important. Keep up the great work. Andy
Dusty had a rather dandy way in knowing how to handle my developing skill set in sand. Totally rave about the experience, everyone should have at least day of Dusty. 😎
This was so good to watch,❤ Lisa's smile getting increasingly bigger thro' out the lesson. An enormous help for the future adventures of Lisa and Jase with seeing Lisa not knackering herself and giving up and Jase saving on boot soles 😉 doing recovery. You two are going to have even more fun on your trip from now on, 🤔 us too watching. Big thanks to you Dusty for helping them both in a happy place, another great video from you pal 👍👍👍
Sand was my undoing years back when I was trying to learn how to ride dirt. I didn't have anyone skilled to learn from, and was just winging it. I lost all confidence and went back to just riding street. Now I recently moved to Arizona, and our house is literally backed up to open desert. I HAVE to get a dirt bike and take advantage of this amazing landscape. These videos are so incredibly helpful and give me hope that I can get back out there and have a better chance at success.
Excellent lesson Dusty. Even though I am experienced, I took away a few good tips. Lisa and Jason have always had my respect and good on her for increasing her comfort zone on sand. By the way, what and where did you get those two toned riding pants with nice pockets? Thank-you, Dave from Nova Scotia Canada
Invaluable techniques and love Lisa's enthusiasm for challenging her fears. I rode a pebble-covered beach in Wellington, NZ today that's like being stuck in a ball pit, every rock rolls over the next rock and so on, which makes it practically impossible to move from a standstill regardless of your tire grip. Even 4x4's are practically useless without the benefit of momentum on this kind of terrain, but it's a huge amount of fun once you get the hang of it and loosen up.
Thanks for saying so, spending time with Dusty was joyous from start to finish. Laughed my socks off while becoming a much more competent off-road rider! That guy’s a hoot.
What an excellent video and thank you. I love your teaching style and can see the transformation not only in Lisa's skills, but in her confidence in applying them. Off to practice on my own bike now! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
My dang T7 gets stuck in 6” of sand all around the SoCal. Ocotillos weeks especially 🥵 Factory tires just don’t cut it in the soft stuff. But factory tires got me into the devils hole, pumpkin patch, all over anza borrego. True knobbies and it’ll be a great time! Terra crew 💯
An expert rider can ride just about any tire anywhere. But notice, they almost always choose to have an aggressive tire off road and especially with a lot of sand. Like the Motoz RallZ or Motoz Adventures. These work fantastic all over Baja and Ocotillo. They perform wonderfully on the highways between trails also.
Great info i rode death valley two years ago with a family member who has alot of sand exp, i was on my honda 650l fully loaded for 8 days of camping and riding i had to learn sand! There is alot of it never crashed i did fall going over Mengel pass that was ugly now im riding a bmw 1200GS 06 model love it have not done sand yet more weight! I love the bike ill over come the sand!
Fantastic to hear, glad you liked the episode of me giving sand a red hot go! Tons of fun with Dusty, learned a bike load about the soft stuff and can’t thank him and Tim enough for their expertise and making me look good! 😉
The British are a world renowned, world class bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts. Pretty sure they ride almost year round in the UK. Any weather day or night. I am fearful of deep sand as well, I hope I have the skills to tackle sand someday. I hope to ride in the UK as well someday. Great video, very informative with great info for a new rider. IMO, a skinny front wheel/tire probably adds to the instability and the nervousness on low friction surfaces.
Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Was wondering if you guys have ever tried the GT216AA "FATTY" FRONT 90/100 from Goldentyre. We live near the desert and my wife hated taking her KTM 350 into the sand. She is barely 5 foot so when it comes to sand she is either riding or not...there is no padding, etc. After we put the fatty on, her entire attitude and confidence changed. She loved it so much, I put it on my 250 trail bike and what a difference. The float in the sand is outstanding and even rocky washes and creek beds are improved. If I was a competition enduro rider or something, maybe I might not like the slower feel, but a weekend warrior bouncing from a 990 to a 250,, it was a great addition. I've heard others complain about road behavior, but I don't buy it. Safe travels!
For me it was due or die regarding sand the few times I have gone on specific off road trails. Michigan is just a sandy place. And still only have street tires on my 1200gs >.
this isn't deep sand though, is it? to ride on deep sand you need a light bike, 250cc 2 stroke at least and you need to go fast to get up on top of the sand, when I was a young fellow I had a RM 250 t and that thing got going on the sand, we had been on the sand all day and a guy showed up on a XL500, he tried to ride on the dunes but his bike just bogged down, he cleared out after a short while because he just wasn't plaining. he was just fish tailing with the front wheel. we do fish tails but not with the front wheel :) and not on sand.
@@a2dskins I have never ridden a Harley but I'd imagine with that low C of G they would handle well and they have reasonably fat tires which would help in the sand, a friend of mine owned one and he said it was a very nice bike, he liked it.
Keep doing what you are doing, its fantastic. Some suffer from the "I know better than anyone else" syndrome, you dont seem to have cought that virus yet 🤙🤙
@@fourwheelednomad thank you for being willing to make this video. I really appreciate it. I'm going to try and not be scared out of my head in honor of you. Thanks Lisa
Practice in a deep sand with a proper light dirt bike and you will see how much difference it makes. The problem is that people pick heavy overpowered bikes which is not a good starting point for learning off-road skills
Question on tires for sand riding. True lightweight dual sports have relatively narrow knobby front tires while larger adv bikes have fatter profile tiires typically with a milder tread pattern. For riding deep sand is narrow better than fatter?
Id prbably descride that sand as wet sand. Top end Australia cape york. Has an easy bypass to gunshot creek. Well thats what the map says. Its in reality 17km of 6 to 12 inch super dry and soft sand. Pure hell! Great video. But im gunna also say. "That's not deep soft sand". "This is deep soft sand" in my best Mick Dundee impersonation. Sounds like the BAHA boys are thinking the same.
You might think it's a bit of a joke falling of sideways but if you are on a slope and you can't touch the ground you have a lot further to fall and there may be obstacles on the ground you could hit your head on or your shoulder, I can flat foot my xr250r but I have fallen off it sideways just sitting on it because there's not much flat ground around here, that bike is way to tall for that girl.
the elephant in the room is even as a grown man you have to take the blow to your ego and lower your bike if youre not going to ever use the travel that fits your skills. She struggles because there is no second chance for her once it starts to tip, not tall enough and not skilled enough. She needs to take four inches out of that suspension at a minimum, she's not riding hard enough to need it. I don't have the skills either so lowering mine to be able to save myself has saved me on new radiators and levers.
Admittedly, my standard height KTM 500 EXC-F is tall for my inseam-challenged legs. That said, once I’m up on the pegs and unladen, I’m happy as a clam. It’s all about staying in balance, right? There’s no unicorn bike and I wouldn’t swap this capable beast for any other just now. It’s doing everything and more I need it to in this application of riding for my current full-time trip-predominantly on dirt and some slab. Soldier on, I will! 🧡👩🏻🦰🤙
