- If you own a modern BMW, you need to learn this!
3-series E90 range, E82 and more.
IBS - Intelligent Battery Sensor.
Part 2.
In this video I talk more about IBS related issues and specifically - about the jumper cable / adapter that most repair jobs will require.
If your car develops battery-related issues, you may want to verify that this device is functioning properly.
E9X and E8X cars.
E82 has a bit different battery placement.

Good job educating us!
oh yeah.. very much educated in : how to share confusion among peers.
THANK LORD, 4 FKING YEARS I HAD THIS PROBLEM !! THANK YOU STRANGER FROM UA-cam !!!
Haha, I'm glad you finally got it figured out. And fixed it too?
@@maxsam201 totaly fixed !!
Can you maybe say what faults you had or saw? Instead of just saying that you had IBS issues. Thanks!
I will do another video on this, with a better explanation.
Thanks for sharing that you don’t know what you’re doing and for wasting everyone else’s time. Somehow under the impression this was going to be educational. I thought you were going to tell us that it also needed to be coded or something and a how to because the cable was different . But instead, I think we learned how to work backwards and the square peg goes in the round hole but think you for helping everyone understand how you find this all very confusing. So thank you for pointing that out to us, many times.👌🏼 I just subscribed to your channel so thank you very much. I’m gonna go grab some juicy juice and my sippy cup and wait for your next video.🙏🏼
Thanks anyway. I had to ask someone else so I could understand your comment. Here is the answer -
It sounds like the commenter is being sarcastic and critical of your video. Here’s a rephrased version:
“Thanks for showing us that you don’t really know what you’re doing and for wasting our time. I thought this video would be educational and explain how to code or handle the different cable, but instead, it seemed like you were confused and didn’t provide clear instructions. You kept pointing out your confusion, which wasn’t helpful. Despite this, I subscribed to your channel. I’ll be waiting for your next video with my juice and sippy cup.”
It seems like they were expecting a more detailed tutorial and were disappointed with the content. Don’t let this discourage you! Every piece of feedback is an opportunity to improve.

I have my e60 m57 with a fault code about no communication with the IBS but other than a "charging fault" message that appears at very random times I have no other issue with the car. It never failed to fire, all the electronic has always worked. Would this narrow down that the sensor itself is faulty? Alternator seem to charge just fine even under load
yes, It basically indicates that the dme is not getting any expected data from IBS, which could be a faulty communication line (2 wires / can line, there is a connector that could be checked) or the sensor itself is dead. I would be a bit concerned with that random charging fault. Potentially a faulty IBS could produce that fault too. Or the alternator is on the verge of going kaput. hope this helps.
@maxsam201 thank you I've actually found that the sensor has been bypassed so I will have to buy a new wire as the one in place is also damaged, I can't believe the dealership didn't see it
I'm glad you got it figured out!
Does having a bad IBS cause the EKPM not to get power? I replaced my fuel pump the other day, disconnected the negative terminal on the battery while I did the job. Afterwards, I reconnected and my car would just crank and not start. Everything is connected properly. Tested the fuel pump by connecting a 12v to it and it works. I replaced the ekpm already nothing. I did a multimeter and looks like the ekpm box isn’t getting power. Checked the fuel pump fuse and it’s good. Currently at a loss and was wondering this would be the problem.
It is remotely possible in some situations, yes. So the fuse f35 is not blown? Bad IBS also shows as a fault code if checked with a scan tool. Did you check for that? Think it's important to check and see if there is a code stored for a defective IBS. some people advise to default-code new EKPM, if replaced, but if you are not getting power to the module itself, then it's somewhere in the wiring. Let me know how it goes.
@@maxsam201this is my moms e90 which she lives far away from me. I plan on visiting her again to try and fix the car. But to answer your question, fuse is not blown. Which is good. Double checked that. I do remember checking the car to see if there are any codes, I do recall seeing IBS Error or some sort like that and I cleared it. And still no start. My foxwell scanner has a feature to initiate the fuel pump, when I do that, nothing happens. And again, when I connect a 12v to it manually, it primes. I’m not sure why the EKPM is not getting power though. I’m really wondering if it’s the IBS. Or if I damaged it, because after I replaced the fuel pump, car had no more battery to start. So I tried to jump it by using another car. Just cranks. Until I replaced the battery. Still just cranks.
@ These cars can be a pain. Have you resolved the issue?
@@Jethrumidid you get it going. If so what was it I’m having the exact issue with my car
I have a similar problem. My IBS is down and I disconnected it from the negative cable, now I m running without it. But before that, my car had jerk everytime at cold start, engine almost died from loss of power, I thought it was a bad compression or valvetronic motor and I checked each of this but no problem, only thing remain is EKPM not working properly because of lack of power from battery. So my car had to stay parked one week, after that i tried to start but nothing, I inserted the key I press start button and nothing, only a weak light from the clutch,I tried to remove the key but it was stuck , I went to the battery and a tincking sound came from a black relay in the trunk, I gave my car power from other car and it started, before that I removed IBS cable and airbag cable, now my car is running but the cold start is the same, lack of power and jerking for few seconds...What should I checked, I have ISTA , INPA no error code from this problem only from IBS because is disconnected.
Today I went to a shop and I tested my battery and alternator life, my battery is 100% but the green eye from the battery is now black and my alternator seems not to recharge battery , but in ISTA the voltage from alternator is above 13.6 v , strange problem...
So I have a 2011 bmw 550ixdrive I had a charging malfunction pop up one day when it started getting cold it would appear for 10 minutes after I started up the car then go away after I started driving, now the message keeps popping on and off while driving 2-3 times depending on how long I’m in the car ,is it the ibs?…mind you everything else in the car is still working fine as before it popped up
Hi. If it was on my car, the first thing I would think is that something is not right with the charging of the battery - that is the alternator going out, or something simple like oxidized battery posts, in that line of thinking - that the charging system not working well. If all that checks out good, I would look into other components, including the IBS. IBS is more of a battery status reporting device, in simple terms. I would check if you get about 14V at the battery while the engine is running, if INPA or ISTA or other diagnostic equipment isn't available. Any specific fault codes you could share, associated with that charging malfunction message? Let me know.
my blue part to unplug is no where to be found is it wrapped up in the electrical tape cus i cant find it on my e60 2008 530i
I don't have a personal experience with E60 chassis, but there for sure is a blue connector on the negative terminal wiring. it may be hidden in the harness and wrapped in cloth tape. if you look through this article you may get some ideas - bmwrepairguide.com/bmw-e60-battery-sensor-failure-repair-2004-2010-5-series-all-models/
Are you able to communicate with dme small blue lead is dme lead ?
yes those two wires are the data exchange line, probably part of CAN system.
I have a same issue with this cable and the car sometimes turn off on the road but it’s possible because of this ?
Turns off at speed while driving?? or when idling? In any case, it's almost a 0% chance IBS malfunction would cause the engine to shut off. Especially at a speed - when your car is in motion. Are any other codes present?
@@maxsam201 it’s depends ,usually at speed while driving and before when the engine turn off i didn’t feel anything just same than when u press the start/stop button on random time
I made a lot of test and only wrote the ibs communication , nothing more fault code
Now im thinking what’s wrong 😢
Sounds like something just disconnects electrically - like a loose connection. Battery cables are tight? DME would not turn off the engine at speed if it detects a problem with IBS. But if it shows a fault code for it, I think it needs to be fixed first, before looking anywhere else.
@@maxsam201 now i checked the cables but i don’t have any senzor on negative battery cable , it’s just a regular cable
Interesting. It is not a factory cable?
