  • Stories From The Battlefield // Jerry Deitch, #USNavy, talks about the action he saw on Utah Beach in Normandy, France on #DDay
A big part of what the Best Defense Foundation does is bring #WWII veterans back to where they fought and served. We have brought hundreds of veterans back over the years, and have no plans on stopping.
One of our favorite things that we get to do while on program, is taking veterans to specific locations where they personally saw #combat. It’s amazing to see the memories and stories that all of a sudden start pouring out of them. In this series, we will share with you all these great stories that we have captured, and will continue to capture as long as we have veterans that are able to go back.
We took Jerry Deitch, 94, to #Normandy for his first time since the war. It was a very emotional experience for him after 75 years. We visited Utah Beach, where Jerry saw his first combat. "I remember it like it was yesterday" he said. While we were filming him, some young #Army #Veterans were passing by and struck up a conversation with Jerry. Jerry, who is usually pretty quiet, lit up like a Christmas Tree and starting sharing his story with them. We then found a restored Higgins boat at the Utah Beach Museum, which is the boat Jerry came in on. Please enjoy as Jerry walks the beach that he hasn’t seen for 75 years, and tells stories that changed history.
Thanks to our friends at ‪@sigsauerinc‬ for making this series possible!
Help more veterans like Jerry get back to their former battlegrounds for some closure by donating to BDF.org

While it takes courage to be in an armed conflict, what's more amazing is the amount of courage it takes to revisit a place that caused a lifetime of trauma. I hope visiting Utah Beach allowed him to lay whatever demons that haunted him to rest so he can be at peace for his final years.

Those other guys came around at the perfect time. I think they helped to tell his story and unload some of the grief.. Is there any way to thank the ww2 men and women enough? God love and bless them all.......

Sir I am not able to adequately express my sincere appreciation and now condolences. I apologize for what our country is becoming. Your fellow soldiers did not die in vane. We had a wonderful country for 75 years. Unfortunately it is changing. Socialism appears to be winning. Its a sad terrible day. But seeing you reminds me how great we were

Nice story. These vets tell their story now, but you know its only part of the horrors they saw & went through. Can you imagine some of today's generation who refuse to wear a mask in these unprecedented COVID times saying, no I refuse to wear a helmet, why should I its not a problem........To all those who served, be they American, Canadian, British and any other nation....God bless.
