My name is Kristin O’Malley Garrett and I am Bernard “Ben’s” great-niece. Ben was my grandfathers older brother. They enlisted on the same day along with there youngest brother, Edmund. Ben went into the Army along with Edmund and my grandfather, Vincent went into the navy. They said goodbye the day Ben had to report and that was the last they saw each other. I have letters that they sent each other while both were training.
My husband and I bought my grandparents house and found this flag and telegram. We don’t know where the Purple Heart or dog tags are. It’s possible they were buried with my Great-Grandfather.
I asked my grandfather about him and he told me he was killed on the beach but didn’t know exactly what happened. Only that he never made it off the beach.
Yes, we could have kept the items but as a family we wanted to make his story known and it be used as a teaching tool. On behalf of my family and in honor of Ben’s memory we are moved and so thankful to Erik for bring the items to Normandy. A true man of his word. And to JD for encapsulating this moment for myself and my sister to show our children so our history and Ben’s legacy will live on. I hope we did right by Ben and he is proud to see his scarifice wasn’t made in vain.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Erik and JD. To Ben and the countless WWII sailors and soilders who fought and survived and fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

This video represents why history education is so important. A family and it’s generations have kept the memory of their lost loved one very close to their hearts and to share the story of their solider with all the world, is truly a gift. The flag was received in honor. But, still has sadness felt by those who knew him. To have the flag brought to his final resting place, after so many decades it very honorable. So many young lives sacrificed. May peace be upon him and his family. Great work Eric and JD of keeping history moving forward.

I visited that cemetery in 1986 while stationed in England with the USAF. For many years D-Day to me was always about units that landed, the casualties and the men buried there. When I would look at a cross and read the name it was just that, a name, of a life stopped, never to be fully lived. Your video has brought home the fact that each life lost on D-Day, had a story and a family behind it. Can't thank you enough to let us get to know Private O'Malley and to thank the family for making this happen through your museum!

Going back and watching what I missed along the way. Great channel ! My mother was a 10 year old German girl in 1944 and she never talked about that time until she was much older. At first I didn’t think she remembered much or wasn’t close enough to anything significant. Many years ago when cable television started documentaries she would watch what she came across. One day I was sitting next to her and a little behind and never saw my mother cry until then ( maybe 70yrs old ) and small tears came from her eyes and she broke down about a time when my grandmother, my oldest uncle, my mother and the 3rd uncle were boarding at a train station to move Germans to another area not as effected by the war at the time. She said she was holding my grandmothers hand and dropped her doll and let go to pick it up and in a quick few seconds lost sight of them. She panicked and a young German soldier noticed what happened and whisked her up and caught up with my grandmother and returned her to her family. She had had several brief stories about that time. She was closer than I imagined and she was able to talk more openly after the first time. My grandfather was a German soldier that was a captured POW and was in a camp in New Jersey for a duration and served as a cook. I have a US mess kit spoon that was issued to him for personal use that her game me on a trip to Germany in 1973 shorty before he passed away with en E engraved in it for his first name Emil. My father was stationed in Germany in 1957 and met my mother. They married on May 4th, 1958. They resumed to the United States in 1961 where my mother became a citizen with with my 2 sisters and brother. She had some slightly different accounts of what happened than told in some history books. First hand knowledge is invaluable. Your channel certainly brings light to the truth as told by the many that were there. Keep up the awesome channel !!

I absolutely love this serious. And I thank Erik for bringing these artifacts back to where they came from and to JD for capturing its story. when you go to a museum and you see an artifact and learn about it its really cool and you learned something new but when you bring the artifact back to where it came from and you tell the story behind it that just brings more meaning and emotion to the piece. And when you capture it for others to see it brings out way more emotions then it would seeing it in a museum. and I absolutely love what you two are doing. as a history buff myself I appreciate it. Cause for me it just brings so much more meaning to everything when you bring things back to where they came from or where the story happened. and it takes living history to a whole other level. I hope you continue this serious maybe with some things in the U.S. or other places. Because to me this is a great learning tool one i think people would love to see including me because your not just in a museum telling us about a dog tag, or a piece of a parachute, or a part of a plane, you are bringing them back to where they came from and you are telling us a story of what happened to the person or people behind the artifact. Not only that but you are visiting some of their graves too. And placing a flag next to them which shows so much respect and truly brings these artifacts to life. brings them to a reality of this really belonged to this person. Like it’s not just an artifact but an artifact that once belonged to someone who gave the Ultimate sacrifice. or an artifact in the story of someone’s life and what they did and what happened to them. It keeps all their memories alive. and it’s just truly amazing. from one history lover to another thank you both for all that you are doing with this serious it’s truly amazing and on a whole other level. and it is done so respectfully as well.

I have letters Bernard wrote home and in one of them to his aunt (his mother died when he was 13 giving birth to his youngest sister) he enclosed money to his aunt-who was likes his mother-to buy his sister a graduation high school graduation present for her. His aunt bought his sister a watch and she had it until she passed away several years ago. He had a big heart and was always making sure everyone else was okay. Seems kind of perfect he ended up being a medic.

@@TheHistoryUnderground definitely, I’m very proud of both my grandads , one the Royal Navy joined at 14 faked his birthday to join up , the other fought Rommel in North Africa a desert rat. He was caught at Tobruk was also on the long March . I just have to remember those blood lines are in me and I try my best to make them proud . Everyone of those blokes are hero’s .

Thank you for bringing forward a bit of the awareness of the human cost in freeing Europe and the rest of the globe from tyranny. Many folks "know" some history they have been taught, but it's things like your videos that show the cost of those actions. Living people lost all of their tomorrows to save ours, may they rest on the arms of their God forever.

I was born in September '43, and I clearly remember being at Union Train Station in Houston, TX in late 1945, seeing many uniforms as I was being led by my hand through the crowds of soldiers coming home!

I can't say enough how great of a job you are doing by sharing these stories with us. They are touching and have great value to us history buffs, but more importantly, stories like this one, are so special to the families. Teaming up with Erik has been a homerun. So many stories, so many great artifacts and really, for you, a blessing of opportunity to share with us. I think what you are developing here could be turned into a great series on the history channel and even a stand alone documentary. Well done Ben!

Yet again and again and again another fantastic vid in this series.
Seriously man, you need to move to France, maybe for a year and continue on this journey, maybe the whole way into Germany.
This is stuff you just don't see anywhere else. Once again a fantastic job.
