Salvador Sobral will represent Portugal at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with the song Amar Pelos Dois

Important to note why he sings with such splendid emotion. He was very sick with heart problems, and his sister wrote this (amar pelos dois or, I will love for both of us) saying that even if he is to pass, she will always carry on his love, for herself and for others, ie. loving in his absence. So in the moment, this song and performance was essentially his goodbye. Fortunately he survived and is mostly well of what I've heard.
That made me cry again 😭
I'm Portuguese and I can say it is a true story guys... He received a heart transplant and survived.

Nice comment! The Portuguese text/poem doesn't say she will love for the 2 in case of his heart dies (it says she will love for the 2 even if he doesn't love her); but maybe it's really a message from the sister to her brother! (All the real life health conditions mentioned are true.)

I meet him 2 weeks ago at a concert in Faro, Portugal. He is a very humble person and he looks fine and healthy (besides the fact that he had to stop the concert to take his medicines on the stage)

As an American, this song reminds me why music can deeply touch one’s soul without language barriers. This guy’s way of singing coupled with the sound of Portuguese is simply unbelievable.

I still remember it clearly - I lay in bed and thought: when will a song finally be played that really touches my heart? No show, no effects, no make-up and dancers - Just simple, pure, honest. I normally root for rock/metal songs on Eurovision, but as soon as i heard this song it's had a special place in my heart. Everything feels more complete when i listen to this guy. Look at how his eyes shine as he sings. Him being goofy but also fucking beautiful at the same time is perfection

Not a wedding song. Ask your boyfriend what this lyrics means. The music is beautiful, indeed, but lyrics is sad because it speaks about the end of a relation.
One of the only songs recently that have had any true emotion and sung in native language that won. Says it all for a performer when people don't understand the words yet feel the sentiment. What Eurovision is all about. Unity in spirit not language.

this song was hated on for being UNIQUE and PURE. just look at the like-dislike ratio, it's sad how Eurovision is so mainstream now and people want it to be that way. he deserved to win, deal with it. i'm just glad that the only year i actually bothered to watch the whole thing, a song like this won. In 2017, I had a connecting flight from Frankfurt to Lisbon. He was on the plane. I saw him signing autugraphs but I didn't know who hw was. We arrived in Lisbon and there were crowds waiting for him. He is very talented. Fond memories.

It really is a great thing that not only is the winning song in the country's native language but in a style of music so close to the cultural heart of the country (Fado is as Portuguese as you get). This is what the Eurovision seems to have less and less of each year and it can all be so tasteless and monotonous because of that. So much respect to Portugal for sticking to their roots!

I suspect that Portugal didn't want to host it again so soon (it can get expensive!!!), so they deliberately sent in a poor entry.

It is not boring, it takes you away on a Journey, if you admit it. It is not a question of liking a song or not, that is o.k., but people with a bit of tenderness in their soul would never use the expression boring. Just my personal view...
