Hey, Alex here! Sorry I'm so late to the party, I haven't checked my notifications in a long time hahaha. I'm glad you found the time to do an analysis on this album, i knew at the very least that it would make a pretty sizable impression but it also seems like you liked a good bit of it! There's so much to unpack with this album and I still notice new things on re-listens even to this day. I think a lot of Mastodon's appeal for alternative rock fans, is that they don't often fall into stereotypical "Metal tropes". Like over-reliance on double kick drum and knuckle dragging breakdowns in every song, they're able to keep things fresh because everyone in the band is involved in songwriting, though some songs and even albums tend to lean in the direction of 1 or 2 members primarily. (This album was primarily musically composed by Brent Hinds, the lead guitarist) Though generally the themes and concepts are written by the drummer Brann Dailor, there's a large overarching concept to this album as mentioned by other commenters. Doing your own research on the concept and themes will definitely enhance the listening experience on subsequent listens, and brings a lot of context to the emotion present on every song.
I should also note that there is a QOTSA connection to this band as well, Josh Homme sung on "Colony of Birchmen" off of the album "Blood Mountain" which was released directly previous to this album. While BM is my second favorite in their discography, it's definitely heavier and faster than this album. I would also describe it as experimental at times, so if your interest is piqued I would try to go into it with no expectations and an open mind, however Colony of Birchmen is relatively accessible comparatively to most other songs on that album.
If you're interested in some of their slower music, i would recommend the EP "Cold Dark Place" released in 2017, which I think the single best project that they have released since CtS.
Thanks again for making the video!

Brent Hinds wrote a lot of this album while he was hallucinating recovering from a brain hemorrhage, no joke.

Welcome to the realm of progressive rock/metal. For me, the best subgenre of all the earliers I've mentioned and the most complex, demanding and sophisticated one (Opeth and Enslaved are my favourite metal bands for that reason, they're masters of sound and compositions).

Glad you loved that funky ass interlude in The Last Baron, one of my favorite pieces of Mastodon writing. They spun off into the ether and still found a way to wind it back down on beat and mesh it flawlessly to the rest of the track. The Last Baron is probably my favorite overall Mastodon track; as much as the album is a journey, The Last Baron is an epic unto itself and just bookends what makes the album great

The Album is a dedication to the drummers sister who died when they were both quite young. Won’t say anymore about it as youtube will erase my comment. Her name was Skye.

A masterpiece, one of the best prog metal records ever and one of multiple masterpieces from mastodon, leviathan is a god tier album and an iconic concept album about moby dick. Their whole discog is so good and diverse, best discog in metal since 02 imo. Anyway you’re correct they have 3 lead singers, on oblivion for instance Brann Dailor the drummer starts out then it goes to troy sanders the bassist and the the chorus is done by Brent hinds the lead guitarist. One of the things that makes them so unique is having 3 very distinct lead singers. Anyway hope to see you do more mastodon in the future, leviathan is also a masterpiece but it’s a lot heavier and not as proggy, blood mountain is insane too and pretty much received universally acclaimed from critics and audiences just like leviathan, if you’re looking for more modern mastodon with main clean melodic vocals then I highly recommend their album emperor of sand or their recent double album hushed and grim, both fantastic album. Everything in their discog ranges from very good to masterpiece, if you want to hear super heavy crazy mastodon their first album remission is the way to go, anyway nice reaction, mastodon rules, Brann Dailor’s drumming especially on early albums like remission is so insane and hectic but so enjoyable to listen too. Anyway I’m rambling but mastodon rules and happy you did this

Progressive metal in general is like that, especially with first listens. It’s hard to grasp and tie down because of all the contrasts and changing themes. But once you have a few listens it starts to jell nicely and you start to really appreciate the creativity and uniqueness. This is definitely one of their more progressive albums. Definitely recommend hearing some of their earlier and later material, this band has grown and changed up the sound so many times while remaining paradoxically mastodon while doing it.
Love your reaction man, you did it justice, respect.

This was fun! This is one of their most ‘concept-y’ concept albums. It’s amazing, but I feel like some of it is long winded, and they definitely have more easy or approachable albums with more bite sized songs that I think you’d appreciate. Each album has a unique vibe. Also, what’s great about this band is that 3 of them do lead vocals, including the drummer.

Late to this reaction but glad I came across it. I love CtS, it’s truly epic. 2nd only to Blood Mountain for me in terms of Mastodon albums. There is a sad side to it though, as it’s partly a homage to drummer Brann Dailor’s sister Skye who sadly committed suicide when only 14 years old.

It's probably been mentioned, but the talent of these guys is insane. Three of the band members are playing an incredible prog soundtrack, while also taking turns singing. The drummer does all the clean vocals, the bassist does the angry brutal vocals and the lead guitarist has the cool distinctive voice that kind of sounds like a southern Ozzy Osbourne.

Nice to see a solid reaction to my favourite album by my favourite American band LOL, but they are still only fifth on my list; you may find appeal in the rest of my top five and probably the sixth as well if you say you like progressive musically complex stuff but prefer your vocals either completely melodic or completely harsh because that's what most of them do... my favourite band Ne Obliviscaris from Melbourne, Australia actually has two separate vocalists for each of those and their clean vocalist also plays the violin usually when he's not singing. I'd recommend either their first album Portal Of I from them or their most recent fourth one Exul depending on how you like your harsh vocals, as I know a lot of people tend to like one type or the other and those who do seem to prefer the lower Death Metal style growls much like I do which Exul mostly has whereas Portal Of I does about half those then half the higher pitched Black Metal style screams but there's a song on that album called Forget Not and I think it could be not only the most beautiful metal song ever written but possibly the most beautiful song ever written in my opinion; number two and number four out of my top five kind of sometimes do the combined vocals but they're just batshit insane genre mashing bands in the first place who are respectively Igorrr and Twelve Foot Ninja for whom I recommend the albums Savage Sinusoid and Silent Machine... Twelve Foot Ninja is a lot like Mike Patton's musical projects particularly Mr. Bungle and Faith No More whereas Igorrr is just weird almost defying explanation beyond avant garde French strangeness XD My third and sixth favourite bands are more in line with standard Progressive Metal again, but they do it like almost nobody else; Opeth and Amorphis being those bands for whom I recommend the albums Ghost Reveries and Queen Of Time respectively... the former is a lot like what Ne Obliviscaris puts out but without violin and a more traditional metal style with probably the catchiest riffs in all of progressive music beyond maybe Mastodon here and Amorphis has some catchy riffs too but they're more on the epic soundscape side of things plus their vocalist Tomi Joutsen is probably the best in the business at both harsh and clean vocals at least of those who only focus on singing not playing instruments as well. I'd recommend anyone reading this little story I've written check any and/or all of these out, and also one of the last concerts I've seen was these guys Mastodon playing the middle slot after Khemmis but before Opeth as the headliners which was an absurdly wicked show for which the highlight of seeing Mastodon was definitely getting to hear The Czar off of this album after waiting seven years since the only other time I saw them for them to play something off of this magnificent musical masterwork.
