    Mastodon played in my basement around 2001. I lived in a row house. The neighbors never complained. They came back a few months later and played our skate park. A really nice group of guys.

      @@WhyNotMN they were in town and their gig was canceled. My house was offered as an alternative because they wanted to play. Mastodon, Cream Jabul Babar, Delvic, Last in Line all crammed into my baesment in Western Mass. What impressed me is my wife and I saw them several years later in Seattle and Brent recognized us and said 'we're a long ways from the basement'. Brann talked our ears off. A really nice group of guys who work very hard at what they do.

    This series is great. Not many realize that this is not simply a song analysis but a production seminar. Many of the details you hear that make this and other songs great do not originate from the band itself, but from the producer. So if you listen to all the nuances Rick points out on every song, you will learn more about stuff you only really learn in the studio environment. Great job!

      Not my favourite album (mine is Blood Mountain), but The Hunter is better than Crack the Skye and Leviathan, and million times superior to the last two albums. The reason why I did not like it that much at first was the production, then it has slowly grown on me

    • @DreamPurpleFloyd
      @DreamPurpleFloyd 6 років тому +23

      To me Mastodon's weak point has always been the vocals. Most of the time they do the job but I never told myself "wow what a great vocal performance", as opposed to say, their drums or their guitars. And that's one of the main reasons I don't like The Hunter a lot : it's one of their most vocal-oriented records. Also the complex song structures and the creative riffs were toned down quite a bit on this one.
      So that's why, as an early Mastodon fan, who loved their progressive instrumentation and didn't care a lot for their vocals, I don't find a lot to enjoy on The Hunter.
      I would never say it's a bad album though, to me it's just not up to Mastodon's best (Leviathan, Crack The Skye).

    • @Arawadewiseman
      @Arawadewiseman 6 років тому +1

      I would probably say Blood Mountain is my second to these two. For whatever reason Leviathan always kind of fell flat for me. It just kind of drags along, a lot of the riffs and melodies don’t stand out to me at all (Blood and Thunder is one of the best rock/metal songs ever though). Crack The Sky is great but I can’t tolerate the production. It’s too cloudy and cluttered. I actually love The Hunter from a production standpoint. Also, The Hunter has their best hooks and catchy elements, I feel it’s their most concise album from a song writing standpoint.

  • @rycolligan
    @rycolligan 4 роки тому +18

    As busy as some of their songs are, the thing that always holds a Mastodon song together is just how unbelievably smooth Brann's drumming is. Of all the drummer's I'm into, he has this special ability to flow all the way up and down his kit at full tilt without ever sounding like he's sweating. It's so impressive when you see him live.

      They sound like on Genesis’ Duke album - excellent!
      Brann: I mentioned last time we spoke that Heart's "Barracuda" was the inspiration for my drum sound on Emperor of Sand, and for The Hunter it was Duke by Genesis.

      It's too rare to hear open, ringing, full sounding drums. Most things nowadays sound like different sized tupperware. Just thuds of different timbre, just the slightest tone if you're lucky. I've never gotten away from that open sound, haven't put a single piece of tape on a drum in 30 years.
      Plus, it always will help to have Brann on the kit...

And I really love the way Mr. Beato took everything apart while showing his obvious appreciation of this band and their music. This man clearly knows what he is talking about and the way he shares this with others earns my deepest respect. Thank you very much for this highly instructive and most entertaining video. Bit of a long shot as they're an unsung hero: Failure have released their new album today, and it's another absolute blinder (So, Rick STRIKE NOW!!!). If you're not familiar then Fantastic Planet is one of those albums from 20 years ago that people are finally going "Oh yeah, this album Marshalsea's been yanging on about, hey he was right all along".
    So, either "STUCK ON YOU" or one of my personal favourite songs ever "ANOTHER SPACE SONG".

    • @oliverjones86
      @oliverjones86 6 років тому

      In the old records (Remission, Leviathan, Blood mountain), Brann had more space to do crazy fills and quirky timings! His style and, that of Mastodon in general, changed in a kind of drastic way with Crack the skye and the following records. I like both styles but prefer the old one. More dislocked, more dissonant and more "contemporary art" to me :)

    i think there’s a lot of beautiful, yet brutal ambience on Remission, between the bits where they let loose their hardcore roots. Thus why it’s my favourite, there’s space and thoughtfulness, but there’s also incredible tightness and technical prowess. Not to disregard the other records, Blood Mountain is tied first place, but i think now that Mastodon have kinda eschewed a lot of what fuelled them during Remission for something less aggressive, yet warm, it’s nice to look back and be proud.
