This actually happens quite often in Metal...
Amorphis do that a lot, Orphaned land have songs where the singer, lead guitar, bass and even drummer (with a small hang-on mic) sing, Epica's bass player and keyboardist also have some singing sections, Moonspell lead guitarist sings quite a lot, etc.

Actually the brighter more clear vocals are the drummer who sings. He sings more on last record than the previous ones. Otherwise it is the base player who sings. Unusual that rhythm section handles all the singing.

I think it would really cool to do a follow up of this examining songs from the Mastodons other 4 studio albums. If I had my choice it would be as follows.
      March of the Fireants
      Colony of Birchmen
      The Sparrow
      Steambreather
The four albums you pulled from here are albums #2, 4, 6 and 8. It would be cool to go on another career spanning journey with you hitting the odd numbered albums. Cheers!

@Jonathan Sobol yeah I read or heard that banjo was his first instrument if I remember correctly. I think that's where he learned the hybrid picking that has become a huge part of his sound. His side project Fiend Without A Face has a heavy bluegrass influence to it. I just love that in Megalodon he went full country for a couple seconds. One of my favorite parts of the album lol.

Mastodon does have the same members as when they first formed. They have multiple singers, but the vocalist you mentioned in More Than I Could Chew was their drummer, who didn’t do vocals for their first few albums. I don't know if you'll read this Geebz, but I just want to say how much I enjoy how you present these videos. Before "More Than I Can Chew" you say "let's sit back and enjoy" and that's really the key for me; you let the music do as much talking as you do, and it's so much easier to appreciate the craftsmanship of the song that way. I've watched a few different reaction channels and most of them are pausing the songs every 10 seconds to gab about some such and it hurts my soul to hear these songs that I adore all chopped up and broken. But you let them play, and I thank you for that, because it means I can enjoy the song so much more, and enjoy your input as well.

You're correct about the songs rolling into one another on Crack The Skye. This is part of the genius of the album. Mastodon wrote the album in such a way that it's really one huge musical story that moves fluidly from one song to the next. I'd love to see a reaction to this album in its entirety and their latest release Hushed and Grim, which in my opinion is their Magnum Opus and truly shows how far their technical abilities have come and how much range they have as a progressive band. In my opinion, they're the greatest band of the 21st century so far........and quite possibly ONE of the most important bands too. My favorite band for almost two decades now, so glad you did this one. Two things:
    - It’s shocking that you’ve yet to check out (as far as I can tell) anything from their Remission album; “March of the Fire Ants” is the song off of it that introduced me to the band, and is still my favorite song of theirs.
    - Looks like you had a lot of people pushing for “The Czar” and “The Last Baron”, but their true epic masterpiece is “Hearts Alive”, from what I consider their magnum opus, Leviathan. It’s my 1B to “Fire Ants”, and I hope you react to both at some point.
Now you’ve done Mastodon, BTBAM and Opeth in long form; do Meshuggah and you’ll have covered my personal Big 4 in depth. Thanks dude!

I still remember, to this day, my buddy passing me one of his earbuds as we rode the bus to our UIL One-Act Play competition, back in 2009, senior year of high school. He just said, "Listen to this shit" and hit play, and I was hit with the opening track of Crack the Skye. I had heard Leviathan and Blood Mountain already, so I was expecting to hear Brent or Troy's usual vocal fare, but that opening track, Oblivion, opens with verses from Brann. It was the first time I had really heard him sing, and it was amazing.
We listened to the whole album on that ride, and even in mono it was magnificent.
Crack the Skye really cemented Mastodon as one of my all time favorite bands. Brann's lead vocals on that album was really a treat, and I think the decision to give him more and more focus as a vocalist has been a huge part of the bands more mainstream success. He's a much more traditional style of vocalist than Brent or Troy, and that has allowed them to expand their music.
Thanks for the video as always Geebz!
