As part of the safety crew on "that day", this interview hit me hard! After I cut the roof off & saw Sr. being pulled out, I knew immediately that we had lost a legend 😔
Because of this incident, many drivers owe their lives to Dale Sr. because of the safety measures that were put in place by NASCAR. R.I.P. Dale.

Never having the opportunity to have met Dale Sr. I was a serious fan of his back in the day and will always be. Long before his last race Dale was always NASCAR to me. I remember there were many races I had to miss because of work, actually duty since I was on active duty at the time where weekends were just like any other day you worked. As with most of the time it was without having a TV or radio around. However I remember as soon as I got off and found someone that had watched the race I would always inquire, “how did Earnhardt finish”, instead of the usual how did the race go? With that you can probably guess the major effect that day had on me and about NASCAR.
Hearing Dale tell this story, watching the look on Danny's face...brings me rite back to that moment I will never forget. 😰 And bang on with the font Dale.
To this day, it seems it bothers him to even say it or bring it up. I can definitely sympathize with him on a personal level. 😥
It still feels like it happened yesterday. I was reluctant to even watch this one but did. It's always difficult when I know it's going to be about that day.

I thought it’s at his house and it belongs to his son Danny Jr & if Dale wants to use it Danny Jr will have to agree to letting it go to the HOF. I may have been mistaken though.

The fact that these two sat down and openly talked about all of this for all of us to see is amazing. I hope they know we all really appreciate it and that we loved Dale and all the rest of the Earnhardt's

I think Dale understands the feelings that so many of us had for his dad. Thank-you for letting us in this way. My wife and I was traveling the night Jr. won Daytona we listened to the race on the radio. The last few laps I pulled over and my wife and I just set there and looked at each other when he won. We couldn't talk. That was an important night for a lot of folks. Big E will never be forgotten in this house.

I stopped at the drive thru on the way home and got tacos. When I got home I opened UA-cam on my phone as I sat down to eat. I clicked on this video and by halfway through it I was crying. My dad died in a car wreck when I was 5. I was to young to know him or even remember him. I was watching when Dale Sr died, blocking for Michael and Jr. I was crushed knowing Dale was right there when his dad died. Crushed. This discussion made me feel some of that again, as if it was fresh. I love this podcast. These Earnhardts are a treasure.

20 years later.. and it still feels weird thinking back to what happened in February of 2001.
I enjoy listening in to these types of stories.
I worked at DIS 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. Our team was the first to arrive at that wreck scene. I wish that I could erase all memories from that February 18, 2001 day.

During this time l had just got home from the hospital in Goldsboro. I had an operation and couldn't sleep in the bed. I watched the race in a recliner and that's where I had to sleep for over a year. After the race I went to sleep because of the medication I was on. The next morning my wife came in the den and was talking about how sad it was about Dale. I asked what do you mean and that's when I found out what had happened. I remember Michael on the roof of his car celebrating and remember seeing Schrader going to Dale's car. The wreck didn't look that bad on TV. I went to sleep and l just couldn't believe when she told me the next morning. My wife just assumed l knew what happened. Oh man what a terrible shock. NASCAR has never been the same. So so sad for you and all your family ❤️🙏
I’m not sure I will ever get back the passion I had for nascar before your daddy died, but I love listening and watching your podcasts. I love history and the stories from the past are awesome.
It faded for me as well. I fell back into dirt late models and became a bloomquist fan. He’s been called the earnheardt of dirt.
I'm a young guy but I love the sport. It's history. History builds the stories of today. We can remember but realize the blessings we have now. This next gen car is an animal on the track and they sound awesome. I love turning on the TV on sundays again.

The baseball car was flying that night, I think the whole racing world stood still when you came to the front and won it. I was screaming at the top of my lungs "COME ON JUNIOR" for every car you passed and when you crossed that finish line I cried like a baby. Hearing Ned Jarrett say he was speechless as he choked tears and then seeing you and Michael on the roof of the car hugging really was the best part, thanks for that moment and God Bless

I dunno maybe, there’s something wrong with me… I know people don’t want to relive that day… but to hear different perspectives and tidbits of info from Dale Jr., Danny, Kenny, etc. about what happened makes me feel like another page turned, getting closure to complete the book. As a selfish fan, I give them so much respect for even discussing it because I honestly think that guy basically threw the weight and grief of the whole racing world on his shoulders. I was just a young kid getting ready to deploy (April 01’)… but I remember so much about that day. It still sucks to think about it, as a fan… but to be his son, or brother, or friend… and for Jr. to come out the other side a better person after all of that and still share it. That’s incredible, that takes guts, it takes big a$$ balls to look at that say I’m still racing, I’ll carry the load for my dad, I’m not gonna give up, I’m not gonna fail. As just a young punk kid close to his age and not really have it figured out yet… if there’s a reason this guy is going to HoF, that’s it. End of story. Period. He did what no one else could, and kept the sport vibrant, when even Superman would have trouble carrying that load. Credit where credit is due, Kerry, Kelley, Dale Jr., his family, RCR, DEI… they all held there head high and plowed forward. That’s what makes it so tragic but so incredibly special.

It’s been twenty years since Dale’s death and it still hurts to hear you guys talk about it. Your Uncle Danny is a cool guy. RCR shouldn’t have used the 3 with Dale’s font. When I see that black Chevy with that style 3, I think of Dale and Richard. I don’t think about Dillon. That’s the way it is, period.

I've been dying on this hill forever. If Dillon wanted to run the 3 (Because it was Richard's number) then why not stylize it back to Richard's day or even the Ricky Rudd RCR days.
Right I wouldn't be mad about the 3 if they changed the font and color scheme.
Junior Johnson ran #3 too. I'll be a Dale Sr. fan until I breathe my last but, it's just a number. He won rookie of the year in 1979 and his first Winston Cup in 1980 running the #2. Dale Sr. still would've done everything that he did no matter what number was on the car.

This is an amazing story and interview between an Uncle and a nephew. Junior does a really sincere and respectful job of asking about a horrible event. Even from a longtime ago.
The emotions will never go away. It's amazing the love and respect for your Dad and brother. That carries on every day that a track is open and cars are racing..... there is always that black and silver 3 somewhere being worn or flown by someone. The hurt, loss, emotions are always there but the smiles, good times and good memories are also there. God Bless you all who lived that and suffered those hard times. Our hearts are always with you.
Dale Earnhardt gave life to the 3. That's the main difference. People called it: The Black Number 3, and it was Earnhardt behind the wheel. A storied history. It had meaning. I think that's why so many of us are still bothered. I know it may sound silly, people say "it's just a number" but it was more than that. It's always felt awkward seeing it on track since Dale died. Great interview. Loving this series.
Like Jr said though, change the font. If Richard would’ve changed the font then it would’ve been Austin’s own 3 instead of Dale’s. Richard could’ve used the font style when he drove the car before dale got in it.
I've never been into nascar or racing a day in my life but this podcast has some of the most incredible and authentic conversations between decent men allowing themselves to be vulnerable that I've ever seen or heard.
You can really see how this generation of Earnhardt men keep their emotions in check.

I sort of agree with Dale that maybe they could have changed the font for the regular season. Then bring it out for a throwback or special occasion. Very cool to listen to you guys talk!

I love to listen tothe race way stories. I was in the country in north Georgia in 2001. Kingston to be exact.I like to watch and listen but that your dad lost was heart breaking. sSo many of us tied our own efforts to your fathers. You came along and triedwith little efort into being the sports most popular driver. tword the middle and end of your career I was glad to see you give the effort you did. Your wins only added to yhe legacy. You know there are many of us who could beat "Stinky Crashhouse " but will never grt the chance thanks for winning and thank you for sharing. we love Dale jr. and we loved your dad.

So reminded me of my father’s sudden death. I received word he was in the hospital, I knew it had to be bad, had a gut feeling. I don’t remember my 15 mile drive only that I drove a 1/2 mile going the wrong way on a one way street.
The 3 days in the hospital before his death are snap shots and short memories.
The hard part was I had to make the calls to friends I knew my dad would like to say goodbye to.
I enjoyed this episode a lot.... definitely more than I anticipated.

The absolute strength shown by these men is immeasurable. I lost my mother to violence, and it is incredibly difficult to say much more than that. It is sometimes necessary to do so in order to make a better world. Love and respect to my fellow humans.

I would’ve thought Steve Park’s DEI Rockingham win would’ve been much more satisfying than the Harvick Atlanta victory, knowing that the same team Dale created with his own 2 hands won both the 1st and 2nd races of the ‘01 season, despite the Founder and namesake being gone...
Anyway, it was a very emotional win for me. I’m sure other Dale Earnhardt fans were crying when they saw the #1 Pennzoil Chevy win, just a week after the #15 NAPA and Mikey took Daytona...
Both DEI cars...then the week after Gordon won at Vegas, the re-numbered #29 RCR car with Harvick wins Atlanta...
Very appropriate that the early 2001 races had such a significant DALE EARNHARDT connection...and that Dale Jr. had THREE WINS that season! I’m not into numerology, but the coincidences seem “other-worldly.” Long live Dale Earnhardt’s Legacy. The incredible accomplishments and the numbers are just staggering...
Dale Sr formed DEI for his adult children. Kelley handled most of the business aspects. Teresa's education was for commercial art and interior design. She didn't know squat about managing a business. Kelley earned a B/A degree for business management.
@Shannon Rehwinkel Dale Sr never owned the #3 car. RCR did and Dale Sr drove it. NASCAR teams have several different race cars depending on which track they go to.

I feel like they are pointing out the fact that the 29 wasn't a new build for Harvick, it was one of the cars Dale drove, yearly. As for the team, it was the same set of guys (presumably un-chanhed or barely at all) that built, maintained and were the crew that supported Dale for the final handful of years he raced.... VS the car being a new build and the crew being completely replaced.
@@WikidRacer Each season, teams build many cars. Each one for specific tracks. Cars for Daytona and/of Talladega are different than for Martinsville, Bristol, etc. Car numbers are owned by NASCAR and licensed to cars each season. RCR had paid the license fee for the #3 each season since 1976. RCR chose the font style but nobody owns that font style. Teresa wanted to sue teams that used it but that nonsense went nowhere.
I had the pleasure and honor to meet Danny Earnhardt. Talladega in October 2001. He is a really cool guy to talk with.
Love how Jr lit up when Danny said he had the baseball helmet. Would be really cool to have that in the Hall of Fame
I have to admit, and I didn't even realize it until it happened, but I NEEDED Jr. to win the July race. I was at Daytona in February, and that's one of the first time I seen my dad cry, and we didn't talk the whole ride home. But when Jr went back, and beat that track the very next race....I didn't even know how bad I needed that to happen!!

I know you do but man I miss your dad. I quit watching it for a few years. Me and my brother in-law really where upset. I'm sure a lot of men shed a tear and had a beer that day. I've watched nascar since 1999 & since then I've been a EARNHARDT & Nascar Fan Of Both SR. & JR. and when Dale JR. Won the father's Day Race after not winning any Races for Rick Hendrick for awhile in that Black Batman Car Laps Before you Won Dale goosebumps over came me & hearing the fans & watching you Drive to that VICTORY made me Cry I'm 46 going to be 47 in 9 days I've watched over three Quarters of your career. And watched pretty much every lap and race after you came into nascar as a Rookie..years have passed but I can speak for all of us fans when I say we ALL Miss you..I feel like your family I know your story by heart the things that's allowed to be known from the air waves. I was in the stands this terrible day, I have never ever watched or went to another race since!! Will never ever be the same for me! I was a true Dale fan for life!!

I just started listening to your podcast and I have really enjoyed the episodes, after I listen to this one, I had found out that Danny had passed away. It was great to know you where able to bring Danny on and let him share his experiences before he passed.

Thinkn and talkn about that Daytona race...it was my very first NASCAR race I watched start to finish. It was my senior year of highschool. Of course I knew who Dale Sr was and I was immediately a Dale Jr fan. I was so excited because those DEI cars were running so well. It was my first emotional connection to NASCAR or any driver...i cried at the end of that race. I felt terrible for the family and for the teams. 20 yrs later and I still can connect to those moments as if it happened yesterday.
It feels the same to me today as it did 20 years ago the day after was even worse then the day it happened there was only one no one in this world will ever come close ever again he was truly loved by his fans
July 7th 2001 was one of my best days of working at DIS.

Great way to have said Dale, just change the font of the #3 I'm a die hard fan of your dad to this day! If I'm able I buy anything I find with your dad and I if able even offer higher than the person may be asking depending on condition of the item. Very rarely do I try and talk someone down in regards to your dad's collectibles. I miss seeing him race, as well as you on a weekly basis! Props to you though for making the decision you made. DEI AND JR racing fan forever!!!

I got to interview Jr in 2001 at the all star festivities in Seattle, WA. Some "sports" guy asked if the race was fixed and Dale Jr read that man the riot act. I bet Dad was proud!! 2001! They craziest year on record!
