If you try to run openMW and run into an "flora.bsa not found" error message, here is how you fix it. This problem can occur when steam automatically synchronizes your morrowind.ini file (in your morrwoind folder with the data files). In your ini file there is a line that says something like Archive 3 = floraglow.bsa (probably because you needed it for a mod of one of your previous playthroughs). Chances are your ini contains stuff from mods you cannot even remember so it's best just get a vanilla ini file. The easiest way for me to fix my morrowind ini file was to deactive my steam cloud synchronization, download morrowind again and then to tell my openmw in the settings bar "Run Settings Importer" (the last bit is crucial because openMW still remembered the settings of my old ini file). Now it works for me
I soon as I saw this in my top recommendations I instantly clicked on it! Thank you, GamerZakh, for doing a new Morrowind video! And with OpenMW too! I'm excited to see how well it performs on your RTX 3080. 11:50 I never thought about it like that, but you're right. Next gen graphics would run optimally for next gen hardware, which has yet to be released.
I'm doing the total overhaul modlist right now in openmw 0.47. the game looks soooo good after 200 mods and I have about 160 mods to go. It's awesome what they did so far with this engine.
This is one of my most anticipated projects! Old games are such a hassle to get running on modern hardware, not to mention with ultrawide... Can't wait to finally play Morrowind for real. I've only ever went through Seyda Neen. The state of OpenMW encourages me to at last try a full run.
It's wonderful to see how much better OpenMW keeps becoming! I'm now even more excited to start exploring Vvardenfell again with a new character in the near future.
I'm surprised Bethesda doesn't release a "remastered" version of Morrowind with graphics and QOL fixes like this, and make $$$, I know many, many people who aren't technically minded and would never consider modding, or even know what modding is, who would see a 30 sec teaser and be like "Shut up and take my money!"
This looks fantastic 😳. I usually avoid these kind of projects because they try and use the Skyrim or Oblivion engine and end up destroying the aesthetic of Morrowind. This looks quite honestly …perfect. And given that I would always give up on the game due to the intolerable lag of poor optimization, this remaster might actually get me to complete the main quest. What a gift ❤️
After watching your video I decided to use OpenMW 0.47 and I love the power and speed that this engine has. Thank you for creating this video and showcasing this AMAZING Game Engine for Morrowind. I particularly love the Scalable U.I. and how I can now see the U.I. Fonts on my 4K OLED T.V.
Morrowind released on the day I was born and I gotta say I'm a huge fan of the games that bethesda publish (Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 4 / New Vegas, Doom etc) and I realllyyyy wanted to get into Morrowind but I just personally couldn't handle the graphics. Seeing this, I'll be getting Morrowind today and Install OpenMW. This is sick if I'm gonna be honest. Would never imagine something like this, crazy how I'm just hearing about it. Glad you found it useful! Have fun playing! Morrowind takes a bit of reading but you'll be rewarded for reading all it has. The lore and story is really developed well.
@@GamerZakh yeah honestly, main reason I want to play Morrowind is for the lore. It makes it so that when you’ve said something to someone, that option gets grayed out indicating that you’ve already selected it previously. But yeah I feel like this game is kinda unplayable with mods. I think the only reason I Love this game is because of better balanced combat. It removes the dice roll mechanic and balances out out the combat with the dice roll mechanic removal in mind

OpenMW is a free and open-source engine made from scratch to reimplement Morrowind's original engine. It is much more stable, multi-platform, usually provides better performance, and is compatible with all Morrowind mods except those relying on third-party software (e.g., MWSE). We also have an Android port, a multiplayer port and a WIP VR port. In short, if you want to play Morrowind, there is virtually no reason to not use our engine (unless you want to use MWSE mods, of course). Damn it, I missed the "yet" in your post. I'll post this response anyway. Might be useful to you or others. :-)
I've never played Morrowind - started with Oblivion on Xbox (argh no console commands!). This has got me really interested in finally giving Morrowind a go. I'll be sure to check out your 30min modding video too. Thanks for making the video!
Thank you for that guide video! I uprgaded from an older overhaul (I think you did a video on that one too lol) and now it looks utterly amazing. I have this game on the original xbox and it's like a brand new game.
I’m loving the controller support that comes with OpenMW. I’ve also heard from others that they’ve played hours and hours with tons of mods and NEVER crashed, which is pretty much impossible with the original engine.
Yeah I'll jump into Skywind the second it's available, but this is going to make the vanilla experience top notch too. It'll be nice to have the two branches once they're both finished.
Wow, this looks fantastic! Ive never played Morrowind before, I started with Oblivion when it came out, then Skyrim. But after years of hearing how good Morrowind is, Im jumping into it but am also looking for a UPDATED experience while retaining a vanilla/original experience. Im excited to get immersed into Morrowind and fall in love with the game!!
Have fun! If you want more mods, you can check the description on this video: ua-cam.com/video/O5CorCqMfaI/v-deo.html Also, if you want to change combat, you can look at accurate attack, if you hate the dice rolls anyway.
Mods are continuing to develop too, every year I make a new modlist and it just keeps getting better. Making a new list now because some new tech has been made.
I followed your Easy 30-minute modding tutorial video to the tee and I can say that it still holds true, even a year later. Two differences => First, was that I had to use an older version of Rebirth (v5.6) because the Rebirth Grass mod is currently only up to that version release. Second, installing OpenMW v4.7 on top of your 30-minute guide, you need to re-select the 2 grass files when running through OpenMW. It's still amazing how different this game looks now compared to 2002!! 11:02
OpenMW in his current state is a whole new world, i switched to OpenMW last week, and i will never go back, smooth, no crash, almost instant load on M2 SSD, in the video, the load time is long, i think he has a slow hard disk ^^ , i have nearly absolut no loadtimes with heavy load order, The best things, you dont need to generate grass, you can change grass setting at any time, you can mod the hell out, 400+ mods, no crashes, no stuttering, you have normal maps on everything, it is to much to say, install OpenMW, you will see it is absolutly the future for Morrowind modding.
it's a year later since you've made this and I'm finally going to take advantage of all your hard work here and play this again for the first time in 14 years! Thanks in advance, I should be able to start in the next couple of days...YAY 🍾😎🎉
The latest version of OpenMW definitely brings a performance boost. I tend to use Tamriel Rebuilt as a benchmark, as there are some areas that cause problems, specifically the city of Old Ebonheart. With the newest version of OpenMW, the performance is a lot better in that area. However, the water shader seems to be the biggest source of fps drop.
I got bitten by the nostalgia bug for morrowind recently and only just found out about openMW. Gonna try the mods on your video (I haven't decided to go the 30min or heavy one), thanks a ton!
Mod compatibility is great in OpenMW. I installed hundreds of mods. I even deactivated some mid game that made major changes and I did not have a single crash or game breaking situation. With OpenMW, Tamriel Rebuilt, Skyrim Home of the Nords and Province of Cyrodiil Morrowind is as definitive as it can get atm.
Dl'd OpenMW because it's been - gulp - 19 years since I played Morrowind. And tbh? Everything looks like I remembered it... (not like vanilla, I didn't remember that at all!) Then I decided to follow your 30 min guide because grass would be nice... I didn't do the npc models because I remember them how they look, What you did with the other engine I did with openMW (wow, that made a change!) And did all the other mods...Dude? You dropped it like a BOSS! Holy molly! The game looks so different yet so familiar...? (after doing all the link things in openMW Launcher) It's messing with my head - in a good way! You are now worthy of the title: Diamond Gezer! Thanks fella! Gaw... Look at all this grass...! Wow, these textures are much better! And shadows! You can actually see shadows! And what's that... Enemy! Attack!!! I keep missing - ah how I remember you Morrowind - I'm dying! Run!!! Aaaand I'm dead. Good old Morrowind, how I've missed you... :)
The Oblivion engine is really the worst. Even basic things like increasing shadow distance is impossible. Closest thing I can think of is Skyblivion. At least that's in the Skyrim engine.
My favourite game of all time. I remember seeing it when it came out I had just got a PC (my first) I was blown away with the vanilla game and enjoyed it for years. Only recently got into playing it modded and this engine helped me do that stabally.
You are absolutely my favorite gaming channel and game-modding channel. I find your vibe so relaxing. Its like settling down to a story time. Thanks for this great video. I just got this game and want to get it looking good. After some Googling I came across OMW but I didn't really understand what it was or how to use it. Well after seeing this video I do! Thanks very much! The default out-of-the-box game wont even detect my graphics card. So I'm gonna get OMW. What a fantastic project it is. The modding community really blows my mind. Id like to also say one more thing - Bethesda gets slammed a lot these days but not by me! I say this because they THROW open the doors to modding in their games. They even provide the tools they used to make the game to modders. They also dont go after modders like some others out there.
Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoy the style. And yeah, Bethesda is very generous when it comes to modders. Their biggest act is simply not acting. By not going after projects like OMW and Daggerfall Unity, they just allow the community to do what many other communities can't.
@@GamerZakh Well said,, you put that nicely (the not acting bit). This is how it should be. Modding is open to all in their games from making a 4K door handle to a whole new level! Openmw is the modding monster of stability and the cell loading time is cut into merely a quarter or less, can confirm, I have over 250 mods with 170 esps or more on my game and it still runs smooth as butter, hopefully they integrate openmw into all Bethesda games and beyond.
Bethesda are pretty adamant about their Creation Engine, but hopefully when Starfield releases we'll see some significant improvements. They *say* it's a big jump this time.
@@GamerZakh yeah well see, I'm happy to see people still improving the classic games and coming up with ways to remaster them like their creators don't lol Gotta hand it to Bethesda though, atleast they've been fairly open about the whole idea.
I've been on the OpenMW train for a while simply for the fact that the game crashes way less often. It does still happen, of course, but much less frequently. And it's less frustrating because the load times are so much shorter. Edit - It's also probably worth noting that with OpenMW, I'm pretty sure you don't use MCP and MGE XE, which your other guide suggests.
OpenMW is the way. I had had one single bug and that was some sitting meshes that were used in Clothiers of Vvardenfell and Arena and The Rusty Swordsman(my own mod). I went through a back-path playthrough and killed Vivec to get Wraithguard, instead of going the Blades route.
Think I'll go and take a look at this as it looks very nice and I appreciate addressing the facts that massive draw distance is necessarily a good thing in morrowind in particular due to the small map. One thing which I wish someone could fix is the janky way the NPCs walk about. It always breaks my immersion. But that may not be possible with the mod tools.
In general, creating animations for Morrowind (or any Bethesda game, really) is awful. There are some animation replacers out there and the 0.47.0 changes to diagonal movement and animation blending improve the original animations at least a little bit. But for a full-blown animation overhaul, you have to wait until OpenMW supports more file formats and OpenMW-specific tools and workflows have been established.
@@MrOpenMW Thanks for advising. What you say gives me a little hope that the animations can be fixed. Love Morrowind - have done since it originally came out :).
Honestly, I'd be quite concerned if Bethesda announced plans for "Morrowind: Remastered", especially given their attitude towards Skyrim. I'd rather see OpenMW mature even more and become superior to Oblivion's or Skyrim's engine.
@@MrOpenMW Agreed. I wouldn't want to see it. Modders have been doing that pretty much since launch. Bethesda would highly likely simplify many elements of the game to cater the more casual market, defeating the purpose of it all. While there's on obvious crossover of the player pool for each, there's a very different, very dedicated fanbase between hardcore Morrowind fans, and hardcore Skyrim fans. You can't love Skyrim and assume you'd love Morrowine. They don't feel like the same series, mechanically speaking.
instead of, they recycle skyrim: legendary edition, special edition, GOTY edition, VR edition, anniversary edition, and then all the different console variants...
People should make more mod lists on Wabbajack for Morrowind, I believe last I looked there was only 2, and I would love to see more. I can't convince myself 90% of the time to spend a whole day or 2 trying to compile a working sizeable chuck of mods together anymore..
@@GamerZakh Well hey, thats great news in my book that you'll check it out. Hope your modlist might end up on there one day and many more can enjoy it effortlessly !
I do have an old playthrough but it's pretty outdated. I wouldn't mind going through this again using OpenMW, just gotta see what mods I can get working on it.
there's a new volumetric fog that came out. mix it with the render distance makes it pretty sick you can run a 5 times render distance and still have that classic feel to the game
This is my first experience of seeing the modded version of morrowind and the results look amazing! Just makes me want to replay this game again on seeing how good it looks. Is this only possible over desktop computer? Congratulations on the very impressive work you have done
When I first got Morrowind on my PC it ran at about 12-15 frames dropping to 9-10 in town on the lowest settings :-D Still loved it. I still have the 3 disk set ....not sure why I bought the steam version lol
People should start criticising teh bethesda engine instead of everything else. Most of the development time by bethesda is done on the engine, that's why they can't cram as much shit as they wanted to. That's why morrowind was so rich in aesthetic, lore, gameplay, and story because the morrowind engine was just bought by zenimax and they didn't have to spend time making an engine.
I think most people do criticise the Bethesda engine. It's worst in Oblivion, even simple things like shadow draw distance can't be changed because of an engine limitation. OpenMW is all about replacing the engine and even Daggerfall is played on the open Unity version now.
@@GamerZakh I can assure you, the people who criticize the engines are those who actually mod the game, such as you and me. Most people on youtube and the internet criticize the content, lore, etc. of bethesda games, not taking into consideration the many constraints out about by the engine.
So if I follow the steps of the easy graphics video and then run open mw it'll work out of the box? I always thought I needed mod manager 2 and messing with the config files. Do you plan on making a openmw modding tutorial for your graphic mod setups? great video as always!
If only they could have. One of the main reasons sparking OpenMW's development in 2008 were hardcoded parts of Morrowind's original engine limiting the modding capabilities. Even with great community efforts like MGE XE or MWSE, there are still severe limitations to what can be done with original Morrowind.

@@Vurt72 Have you experimented with the cell-preloading settings? My last comment containing a link got swallowed by UA-cam, but just check out the "Advanced Settings Configuration" section on our readthedocs page.
Anyway, this should minimise the nasty micro-stuttering which occurs when cells are loaded.
@@MrOpenMW Thanks, i'll try that!
I was actually watching your old morrowind mod video a day ago....Thanks for releasing an updated video.
Glad you're finding it useful! The great thing about OpenMW is that it just launches with all the mods no problem. It's actually surprising how easy it is.
@@GamerZakh so just install openMW and send it??
@@Xantosh82 Mods you've installed for Morrowind mostly work in OpenMW without any changes. Only special mods which use scripts won't load right now, support for those will come next version.
Now it works for me
Thanks for the info! Yeah Steam tends to have these kind of problems because of the syncing and sometimes different file structures.
Omg... now I know what my Xmas break is going to be all about. THANK YOU, SIR!! :-D
Have fun playing!
Morrowind is a game that starts as a chore, but gets incredible as you go on and get more and more powerful!
@@subtledemisefox And then you feel like a God and become sad that Skyrim just sucks in comparison to what you can do in MW? :P
This release is a significant upgrade from the previous version. Very impressive and absolutely worth trying out.
I really love watching your videos. No screaming, no clickbait bs - just super chill to watch.
I discovered your channel with your old Morrowind modded videos. And oh boy, this did not disappoint
Glad you enjoyed it! Morrowind is now officially in a new era.
Great video, love me some Morrowind! Also, I can't believe it's been almost 20 years, I just can't wrap my mind around it!
Dear god this looks lovely. Can't wait to get this set up
Wow this is beautiful, absolutely incredible work! I'm definitely going to try this out once i get a PC that can run it
After watching your video I decided to use OpenMW 0.47 and I love the power and speed that this engine has. Thank you for creating this video and showcasing this AMAZING Game Engine for Morrowind. I particularly love the Scalable U.I. and how I can now see the U.I. Fonts on my 4K OLED T.V.
Oh mannn i think i picked the right time for my first morrowind playthrough ever. These visual mods are insane
And yeah, great video like always. Enjoy all the content you post, keep it up :D
Glad you found it useful! Have fun playing! Morrowind takes a bit of reading but you'll be rewarded for reading all it has. The lore and story is really developed well.
@@GamerZakh yeah honestly, main reason I want to play Morrowind is for the lore. I legit bought ESO becuase I wanted to explore the different provinces of Tamriel and just have fun doing quests with my friends.
And yeah, NPC's might not be voice acted and I feel like that's the biggest reason I haven't gotten into it yet (other than visuals ofc) but as long as the writing is good and not repetetive I think I'll enjoy it a lot :D
@@Yucci I'm 22, the biggest problem for me was the UI. The nondescript icons for items, clicking back and forth for inventory management. Just nasty. I don't want to be fiddling with that for hours of gameplay.
@@Frygonz yeah I don’t like the UI but there are some mods that improve on it.
I’ve gotten used to it tho and it’s not a problem for me anymore. Make sure you check the box for colored dialogue options or whatever it’s called in the OpenMW launcher.
This vid is deff a gift for new/old players. Helps ppl figure out how to breath new life into this wonderful game. Along with texture mods; I can't play without Morrowind Rebirth, Children of Morrowind, Sabregirl's Ecology of Morrowind and...a mod legit called Terrible Mod (its just silly, like it replaces blood splatter with candy). OpenMW is just fantastic, and its amazing you can use it to join players in servers!
I swear I can't watch people playing Morrowind without shouting in my head "WHY AREN'T YOU JUMPING EVERYWHERE YOU GO?! IT'S FREE EXP!!!"
I totally forgot about the smooth polish the middle of my space bar got after a year of morrowind as a kid
I dont even know yet what this video is about but I already smashed that like button because... its morrowind goddamnit.
Thank you Zakh, this looks amazing!
My first video of yours was the Morrowind mod vid, here we go again :)
I've never played Morrowind - started with Oblivion on Xbox (argh no console commands!). This has got me really interested in finally giving Morrowind a go. I'll be sure to check out your 30min modding video too. Thanks for making the video!
Glad I could help! Check the description of the 30min video for extra mods too.
Thank you for that guide video! I uprgaded from an older overhaul (I think you did a video on that one too lol) and now it looks utterly amazing. I have this game on the original xbox and it's like a brand new game.
Glad I could help! The mods really are coming a long way.
I’m loving the controller support that comes with OpenMW. I’ve also heard from others that they’ve played hours and hours with tons of mods and NEVER crashed, which is pretty much impossible with the original engine.
Waiting for the Skywind community supermod here.
Still, it's kinda cool to see what can be done with the old game.
Yeah I'll jump into Skywind the second it's available, but this is going to make the vanilla experience top notch too. It'll be nice to have the two branches once they're both finished.
daggerfall unity and openmw its just amazing community work
hope oblivionto get same level support
Gosh, i've never thought Morrowind can look like this! Awesome.
Have fun! If you want more mods, you can check the description on this video: ua-cam.com/video/O5CorCqMfaI/v-deo.html
Also, if you want to change combat, you can look at accurate attack, if you hate the dice rolls anyway.
I havent played morrowind for years. Finally got it on PC and now i wanna play it again but fully modded out. Excited :D
As soon as I saw OpenMW’s update my first thought was wondering when Zakh was gonna cover this
OpenMW in his current state is a whole new world, i switched to OpenMW last week, and i will never go back, smooth, no crash, almost instant load on M2 SSD, in the video, the load time is long, i think he has a slow hard disk ^^ , i have nearly absolut no loadtimes with heavy load order, The best things, you dont need to generate grass, you can change grass setting at any time, you can mod the hell out, 400+ mods, no crashes, no stuttering, you have normal maps on everything, it is to much to say, install OpenMW, you will see it is absolutly the future for Morrowind modding.
I already responded to your comment under our release announcement, but again: thank you for your kind words! :-)
it's a year later since you've made this and I'm finally going to take advantage of all your hard work here and play this again for the first time in 14 years!
Finally ! Been holding back on morrowind despite beeing a massive oblivion fan because it looked clunky but this is great !
Did you install any groundcover mods? I don't think I installed them correctly. Hell I don't even know if I installed any correctly.
@@BebehCookieIcecream I hope my answer to your other comment helps.
If they made an Open Oblivion engine I'd lose my freaking mind.
The Oblivion engine is really the worst. Even basic things like increasing shadow distance is impossible. Closest thing I can think of is Skyblivion. At least that's in the Skyrim engine.
Perfect time to do a new playthrough of Morrowind :)
Have fun!
best Morrowind modding video ever, this is a fantastic resource.
My favourite game of all time. I remember seeing it when it came out I had just got a PC (my first) I was blown away with the vanilla game and enjoyed it for years. Only recently got into playing it modded and this engine helped me do that stabally.
Waiting so much for Skywind
Absolutely binge watching your videos and I leave them playing on the second monitor as I follow your guides to Morrowind modding!
Happy Holidays Zakh 😃
I agree with you on view distance lol, I just like the old school fog aesthetic.

Zakh, I really appreciate your modded Morrowind videos, and I know that you have one that is even more recent than this.
I totally agree with these "next gen" claims. You're exactly right.
But what I would really like to see is a new play-through with your full stack of mods, maybe a thief or archer build, something different. But a chance to watch you progress through the game in this beautiful world...
I’m playing this game for the first time after seriously going deep on oblivion and Skyrim (100% over the course of a decade ). This game definitely has its own vibe. Feels like a very cool old computer game. I can safely say I missed out. Amazing

I looked at OpenMW a while ago, but didn't end up playing because of the lack of shader support. Looks like I'm gonna have to try morrowind again :D

Holy fuck am getting old 19 years ago this game came out i remember telling my friends i cant chill on the weekends need to work to get a xbox feels like yesterday...........
Your Morrowind load out looks like a mix between Morrowind and Oblivion... in a good way
Openmw is the modding monster of stability and the cell loading time is cut into merely a quarter or less, can confirm, I have over 250 mods with 170 esps or more on my game and it still runs smooth as butter, hopefully they integrate openmw into all Bethesda games and beyond.
Bethesda are pretty adamant about their Creation Engine, but hopefully when Starfield releases we'll see some significant improvements. They *say* it's a big jump this time.
@@GamerZakh yeah well see, I'm happy to see people still improving the classic games and coming up with ways to remaster them like their creators don't lol
Gotta hand it to Bethesda though, atleast they've been fairly open about the whole idea.
Yes, it's explained under the pinned comment. Basically, OpenMW should ignore MCP and MGE XE since they directly modify the original EXE.
I've been following this for al ong time too I gotta try it now!
Mirrowind is the best es of all.
I would like to see a remake from Bethesda.

Damn, now I have to replay MW again to satisfy my nostalgia.
People should make more mod lists on Wabbajack for Morrowind, I believe last I looked there was only 2, and I would love to see more. I can't convince myself 90% of the time to spend a whole day or 2 trying to compile a working sizeable chuck of mods together anymore..
I've never used Wabbajack before, I'll have to figure it out. Working on my modlist for OpenMW now though.

there's a new volumetric fog that came out. mix it with the render distance makes it pretty sick you can run a 5 times render distance and still have that classic feel to the game
Oh nice! That's exactly what I wanted for the view distance so there isn't any cut in.
Amazing Work! 🥂
Great video I also recommend talky morrowind for me it made the game feel more alive
I love your videos with morrowind :D
Most people on youtube and the internet criticize the content, lore, etc. of bethesda games, not taking into consideration the many constraints out about by the engine.
the game that got me into all games
This looks perfect, It looks great but still kinda keeps the old-school charm.
Morrowind is on sale right now on Steam. Going to pick it up and try out OpenMW :)
Goddamn, friend, I wish I could like this video more times...
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
So if I follow the steps of the easy graphics video and then run open mw it'll work out of the box? I always thought I needed mod manager 2 and messing with the config files. Do you plan on making a openmw modding tutorial for your graphic mod setups? great video as always!
I love how everything is on par with vanilla skyrim graphics wise, but the mobs and npcs x.x
Modders over the years have essentially rewritten the entire game code several times over by now.
If only they could have. One of the main reasons sparking OpenMW's development in 2008 were hardcoded parts of Morrowind's original engine limiting the modding capabilities. Even with great community efforts like MGE XE or MWSE, there are still severe limitations to what can be done with original Morrowind.
This game literally 'Blew Me Away' with it's directional wind. It was the first game I played that had it.
Yeah when it came out, it used to take like 2-3 minutes to load a game save, ugh.
I remember those days.
