Megan, Only if though rumination affects your health consulting a physician is needed. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety-stress. For a relaxed life without sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath for around 10-15 minutes. Be as still as possible. Many thoughts will come which is ok--slowly negative thoughts will reduce and your mind will relax. During your daily activity keep observing your breath consciously. Best part is mood swings also reduce. Do the above meditation daily to feel relaxed. I literally just had this problem this morning. My sister disrespected me a few days ago and I have been ruminating over it for days. I couldn't focus on anything else. Luckily I had my mom to talk it out with today and I can finally let it go. But, like you said, I have to remember that I can't change her mind, and need to just focus on me. I love this channel, thank you!

Ruminating has been a massive issue for me for decades. It has severely affected my ability to fall asleep for many many years. There used to be situations from years ago that would come back again and again. Over time I found a couple of strategies that really helped. me get more control over it.
One of the earliest things I tried against persistent long term ruminations, was to play the situation out in my head in full colour and detail, then try to imagine it in black and white, then I pretend that the image gets smaller and smaller to about cricket ball size and I shoot it off into the sun. Then I would repeatedly send it off into the sun over and over. You really don't need a vivid imagination to do it. I think just the act of trying to imagine it can be enough. You need to repeat the process a few times but after a while the issue just fades away.
Something that I do now, for any new situations/confrontations, is to replay it in my head as soon as possible. While it is playing in my head I widen my attention/minds eye as it plays out. With my eyes open I try and take in the whole view at the same time, as much as I can see from the extreme left of my field of view to the extreme right. I try to notice everything in that wide field of view simultaneously as I remember the situation. I have found that it really helps to stop any potential ruminating of the issue from taking root. I guess I am too busy trying to take in this wide field of view that my mind kind of puts things into perspective and stops me blowing something up out of proportion?
I don't know why it works, I am not a doctor, but I do know that these tips do help me a lot.

Get the proper medication and get enrolled into a CBT ( Cognitive Behaviour Training ) class and apply yourself! You will get what you put into it. It also seems to happen, the negative thoughts, these thoughts can happen at the end of a very good happy day, or end of a "happy moment" and this thought can make you think you're whole day or that happy moment was negative since thats the last thought you had at that specific moment.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was imagining hypothetical plane crash scenarios and staying up all night being terrified. It got so bad I started to write a will (not a bad idea in general, but really?! Hahaha) and even contemplated cancelling my flight. What really helped me was bringing up my concerns to someone else. Speaking my thoughts out loud grounded me and helped me see how far fetched my ruminating really was. I definitely recommend it! If you have no one to talk to, online groups are really helpful too!

Thanks! This is one of the most helpful videos I've seen.
For years I railed against what I perceive to be the source of the world's ills (lack of empathy, animal cruelty, climate destruction, theism, inequality, etc), furiously trying to convince people to give up gods and intolerance in favour of empathy and altruism, especially in regards to animal rights and our ecosystems, but to no avail.
Other peoples' minds are generally very closed, or in comparison to my own at least, and folks simply don't want to evolve. At. All.
I've given up trying to 'educate' people (I don't mean to sound arrogant) as previous efforts drove me into a deep, suicidal depression for years, and instead I'm focusing on myself for once.
Good luck to you all. You can only change yourself and hope to be an inspiration for others.

Man, that is right good stuff.
I very much relate to your "number 6".
I tend to visualize every thought/feeling as a bubble that grabs my attention and that I can analyze the daylights out of it. Dissect that thing to pieces, relate it to other bubbles I've dealt with before: total paralysis by analysis, fully in the moment, for a brief instant before that bubble "pops" (i.e. I've fully dissected it and can move on). When the opportunity strikes, I'll journal anything noteworthy.
It is often like I am racing from ruminating/feeling (and possibly reacting), to quickly getting at the recognizing of what "it" is and then doing something positive and useful about/with it. I find that with time and practice, it becomes easier and quicker to get past (i.e. not get stuck in) the ruminating/feeling (and maybe even avoiding any reaction).
I've found that when there are too many things competing for my attention, I have to put a pause on whatever I'm doing to process a rumination/feeling before some self-protection-flight-or-flight reaction to over-stimulation kicks in. It takes a little bit of time and space to focus on that bubble, to figure out what is going on internally, and then let oneself find a little peace and comfort in the knowledge that the subconscious mind will eventually unleash some "ah-ha" bubble, something for conscious processing as it gingerly floats by.

I was feeling very sad just before, but realising that I was doing it and focused on the problem and the positives about it really helped me calm down and the pain in my chest was gone. Some days it feels like a curse, but I know it can be conquered with enough willpower and strength. For anyone feeling like they’re in an endless cycle, please know that if you continue like this into adulthood, you will find it impossible to change.

Ruminating is awful. It's Saturday. I've tidied my house, ate a good breakfast, brushed my teeth, took my shower, made my bed. Got in about a half an hour's worth of exercise. And now I feel like I'm supposed to be productive for the rest of the day. I feel sleepy and I don't feel like doing anything.. But I actually feel terrified at the thought of giving in and reveling in a nap or some other self-soothing but non-productive activity. I have this problem a lot. I beat myself up for not being productive enough. Anyone else feel this way? Is it okay to feel this way? Is it okay just to spend the day looking at UA-cam videos or reading a book or taking a nap? Am I a bad person?

I'm 48 and I always had issues with ruminating over my mistakes. I could never shake it off. The only advice had to work with is just stop. Two weeks ago, I had a close friend point out that I have symptoms of both ADHD and Autism. It was a quite a shock, a punch in the gut, but I started to realize why I acted in such ways. Finally finding the reason why, my ruminating stop. I stopped beating the crap out of myself. My perspective of myself changed. I respected myself more. I now see myself more valuable.

Is ruminating part of emotional dysfunction? I take pride in my work. I boiled up inside when i was criticized/corrected. A lifelong trait i hate but am beginning to understand more as i learn more about my adhd. Now i had to keep working but i saw my self quitting right there and with low impulse control and everything else, i was on a tight rope. Things couldve went sour quick. I cant afford to quit. I focused on my smptoms, i prayed, i kept my mouth shut and within a half hour we were laughing about something. Im not a church/preach guy though im a christian. God helps me all the time. He's leading me out of my chaotic adhd life and i really believe he led me to these videos. So thank you and God Bless.

Spot on! We don't have control over others. We have control only our reactions or responses to the event. For some people it's easy to stop ruminating thoughts. For me it's harder. I was verbally shamed by a group of women today because my dog got in a fight (this is not his normal behavior). I think it is because he was surrounded by a pack of 12-15 dogs and got nervous and he just left the vet so he was still carrying some anxiety. Yesterday he was at the same park and behaved playfully as usual. I think it is the public shaming that sent me into a spin

I've got a severe rumination problem - most recently I had a run-in with authority and I made the situation a thousand times worse by doubling down and lashing out at this person when they were trying to do their job. I know what I did was wrong as I made a severely bad impression of myself and I'm not trying to make myself the victim here, but I just don't want this bad encounter with an individual to take over my thoughts

I got worse over the years since I was diagnosed late, early adulthood. My anger and low mood was out of control, I was an unpleasant human and I blamed the world for my situations.
Whether disorders like this are real or not, my ‘diagnosis’ helped me understand why I have felt like ‘the odd one out’ for all my life. More importantly, that I needed to change. My biggest mission was to become a better person. That meant managing to overcome, what I believe in, low frequency vibrations- anxiety, low mood, anger, etc.
It’s been a wholesome journey and a large progress has been made. I listen to all sorts of interesting talks and I have gained an interesting outlook on life. I take my medication, meditate and need frequent exercise to help further manage.
For my next step I would like to start cutting down on the usage of my medication. The routine I have is great, but I worry about becoming dependent and the long term effects of the medication.

This is my major problem with the education system, this os all based on a requirement of someone 'recognizing' their own problems, but there are many of us who have never had a negative thought that we can ever see ourselves as inappropriate.
Anytime I've ever been angry or gone off and thought about it again later, it is still felt like the absolute appropriate reaction. such as when I went off on the lady for leaving her dog in the car in the heat and it was obviously sick and other people got involved as well because they were angry about the situation also.
If it wasn't for the other two strangers I would have been just looked at as a ranting fool.
If I had decided to just go calm down then the dog would have died but it was my ranting they got the other two people involved.
Now yes this is the situation with a dog's life involved and there were other people that were clearly in agreement with what I was doing and saying however that doesn't seem any more appropriate than any other time that I've ever gone off about anything.
When would it ever be appropriate to self-soothe or to calm down other than when the situation no longer exists?
how is this method helpful who is this method helpful to and when and how could this method ever be used in a beneficial way because anyone that's acting out of line can't tell they're acting out of line and if they can tell they're acting out of line then they will not act out of line.

Well done for making as much progress as you have 👍 I’m sorry to hear you are not yet reaping positive benefits from your positive changes.
It can take time to effectively replace all the negative coping strategies with better, healthier ones. I think one of the hard things is that negative coping strategies generally give you a “quick fix”, so you instantly feel better, despite the fact that overall they are damaging. Bear in mind that positive cooing strategies may not be as immediately powerful, but can have a significant impact over the long term.
Being able to think and act based on long term is something many people with ADHD struggle with, so keep experimenting and learning about what works for you. I really like the channel “How To ADHD” - fantastic accessible advice for people with ADHD.
