This video helped me so much. My 7 year old german shepard spent most of her life in a shelter and is just not interested in any objects. Thanks to this video she at least sniffs at her toy (and this after just one session) thanks again
If you get like 100 times more exited and lots of pets, if you dog loves belly rubs that works, that's how O get my lab/shep mix to play with toys that have bumps and stuff on it. She LOVES belly rubs. I also love your breed of dog!
I am training my dog to be a therapy dog, and I want her to know some tricks, too, to entertain people. I am finding that different methods work with different dogs. If you really can't get one way to work, try a different way! I just watched this because I was trying to get my dog to hold a toy in her mouth, but she is so super interested in the treat, she drops it right away to get the treat. I thing the method you show here will work better than the one I have been trying with her, so I am going to give it a go!
Thank you for the video. I got a 5 year old chug from a shelter and she barely plays. Only with one cat toy mouse. Nothing else she will touch. This is great
Maybe try keeping the sessions really short, like 30 seconds to a minute. Everytime she looks at the squeaker ball, click and treat. Try this for a few sessions (maybe 3-5) and then start moving the ball around. If she follows it with her eyes or tries to get it, click and treat. Again, keep the sessions short, and maybe try 5 sessions with this. Within a few sessions, she should start pawing at it or trying to grab it. If not, let me know & we'll do some more trouble shooting. :)
this is perfect!! I'm so excited to try this with my dog! she's quite smart, like the one in this video, so I think she will respond well :) ps, your basset hound is so adorable!
That seems so helpful. I willl try that with her. I have a 5 year old cowboy corgi that doesn't like toys or playing fetch but she likes to "micro manage" other dogs as they play fetch, but I don't always get to take her around other dogs. So I will try this. Just purchased a clicker and will watch more of your videos. Thank You.
I have a husky.. I would really love to play with him with a ball or something for let's say 20 minutes, just to have fun and to make him do some exercise.. And I can make him do anything for a couple of times.. Let's say, play with a ball for a minute.. But when in comes to a longer playtime, he just losses interest very fast and goes and does his stuff.. He will do anything for a little bit, but literally just to get me of his back so he can do his rituals.. He doesn't care if I give him food or not.. Is there any suggestions on how to keep his interest a little bit longer.. He looks literally like "I showed you I know how to do it, why do you keep making me do the same stuff?"
My teacup chihuahua is small, he doesn't play at all... only when i pet him crazy and it lasts for like seconds. He's lazy, never plays with toys, takes a dump anywhere, sleeps all the time. like the only thing i trained him how to do paw. he's hyper but doesn't do like what i said in the 2nd sentence...
you did a geat job!! I am trying to train my elderly dog to play but she wont touch any toys at all. She wont ever put a ball in her mouth too! Do you know what i should start off using with her as a toy? :)
I may be wrong and translating this video wrong, but what I see is a dog that is touching a cup just because it means she gets food if she does. It does not translate that the dog loves the cup. Or am I getting it wrong?
@gimptech2009 That's an excellent question! With deaf doggies, you obviously wouldn't use a clicker, so you reward with a treat only. Use specific hand signals in place of verbal cues. :)
Is this teaching them to like playing with the toy, or just to engage with it. I want her to play with it for enjoyment not to perform or try to gain some other result
I just tried this exercise with my dog, but she still isn't interested in the object. She would look at it a few times, but then she would just lie down in front me of and watch my clicker hand. Any suggestions? I'm extremely frustrated.
i have 2 small energetic dogs i took one into a room at a time and tried this but they just went for the treats they dont even look at the toy they just jump up and try to grab the treats they can't focus on the toy and even without the treats they won't even look at the toy what should i do
isaiah burg I have some advise you sed your dogs were hipper and energetic so try a toy on the I'd they cashed it butt don't pick it up when it stops moving look up this vid how to teach dog to catch Crosby
@gimptech2009 Here's what I would do in that situation. I would start off by training the dog in a place with out any distractions whatsoever. Probably a room in my house. I would put a ball down and when he was barking, I would ignore it. When he is quite, I would treat him. Then once he got to the point where the ball had no effect, I would roll it gently. Again, when he's quite and doesn't bark, he gets a reward. Once he gets that down, I would take the training outside.
Instead of a clicker can I click my tounge or snap my fingers? And what oif your dog is really smart because mine is a spinone italiano one of the smartist dogs
I am trying a kong squeaker ball that's attached to a rope. I've also tried another squeaky ball that has little legs on it which someone said small dogs usually love. She likes squeaky things .
Ponky Instead of using a clicker u can simply just say YES in an excited voice and give him or her the treat, I switch out on the clicker or saying YES to make it more intresting and to see if my dog is paying attention
I just rescued a 2 year old basset hound that has 0 interest in toys. I tried the above and it got me no where, he learned nosing the toy got him a treat but he was not willing to work any harder than that for a reward. Has anyone ever had a dog that simply does not play?
My dog (a German Shepherd) as a puppy loved to play. He would fetch and tug-a-war but as he got older he wasn't playful anymore. We suspect he was terrified when he popped a tennis ball and wants nothing to do with it so :-/
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!! that whole time i watched that i couldn't stops saying "naw" hahaha but that dog kinda needs to go on a diet.... no afence, that not the normal size.
i can't get my dog to look at toy... anyone know what should i do? he just looks at my hand with treats and wait for me to give it to him for just sitting.... sorry for my bad english
Plz help.... All she does is look at me Becuz she knows I have treated as tries to look for it .... I thnk I jus need to take the treats out without her knowing
People, you don't need to buy a clicker, you can just download free dog clicker app ;) We had our first training with my Lucy today using this method and it worked pretty well for the first time. Anyways she is little bit stubborn - she knows perfectly what she has to do for the desired treat but she doesn't like to be manipulated so easily. Maybe I have to work on attitude and excitement little more :D We will definitely try this exercise for at least a week to make any conclusions.
Yeah, ha ha ha.... You make it look to easy. I sat on the floor with a tiny ball immediate after watching video. My terror of a terrier just went after my hand, then sniffing and going after my other hand that has the treats. :(.
Great technique!!! i just watched this video and it only took my dog 3 minutes to love two of his new toys!!!!!..... definitely liking this.
Good work

what if your dog really does not care if you have food? my shiba inu is not intrested in toys or food..

Ai- Chan you could try different treats maybe a little bit of chicken or carrot, you have to find the one "reward" your dog LOVES
find better treats
that dog broke
then you don't have a dog lol

ps, your basset hound is so adorable!
Can we still do this without a clicker? Is it possible just to do this by making a clicking sound of your own??
This is what I've been looking for. My dog used to play with toys all the time now she doesn't as much.
That seems so helpful. I willl try that with her. nice video, clicker training works so good. Thanks
you did a geat job!! I am trying to train my elderly dog to play but she wont touch any toys at all. She wont ever put a ball in her mouth too! Do you know what i should start off using with her as a toy? :)
Nice, concise. That will work!
also, she only pushes the object around if and when she shows interest in it, instead of picking it up in her mouth.
I may be wrong and translating this video wrong, but what I see is a dog that is touching a cup just because it means she gets food if she does. It does not translate that the dog loves the cup. Or am I getting it wrong?

I use lots of treats! Zukes, Stella and Chewy's, chicken, cheese, hot dogs and salmon paws are the ones I use most in training.
My dog used to play with toys but when she grew up she just stop playing or caring for them. Like after 2-3 years old. She 9 now
I got a problem my dog only wants to watch the treats even ive i try to get his attention to the ball he doesnt want to look at it
My dog is 10 as well 70 in dog years but I'm doing the same exact thing as you but he still does not like it what should I do
My dog always ignores it when me and my dad try to get him to chase a stick or he gets scared by the stick
@LaraJane2BCN That dog IS on a diet. I wrote about that in the description. :)
Is this teaching them to like playing with the toy, or just to engage with it. I want her to play with it for enjoyment not to perform or try to gain some other result

Do I necessarily need the cliquer?
You can use "YES" instead. The clicker is for the timing. As long as you say yes right when your dog does something you want.
Didnt work for me she just kept lightly biting the toy and never held ot
She still dosint like the toy lol she just wants the treat lol
Same here, what can I do
same. this went horribly for me lol
a basset round?ha,actually this breed doesnt like to run alot, just smelling the ground, believe me...A basset hound its my first dog breed i got
i have 2 small energetic dogs i took one into a room at a time and tried this but they just went for the treats they dont even look at the toy they just jump up and try to grab the treats they can't focus on the toy and even without the treats they won't even look at the toy what should i do

that should work because u only need a noise the dog hears to know its gettinga treat
I am trying a kong squeaker ball that's attached to a rope. I've also tried another squeaky ball that has little legs on it which someone said small dogs usually love. She likes squeaky things .
Interesting. What object are you using?
Why do you use the clicker?
Great video that really helped me how to get my dog to like toys
thanks
if the dog won't listen to you???
what should i do??
Pure Genius.
my puppy wont focus on anything but the treats when i attempt this please help
This is extremely helpful
my dog is afraid of weird freaky noises. so i think im screwed with the clicker. any other alternatives?
Ponky Instead of using a clicker u can simply just say YES in an excited voice and give him or her the treat, I switch out on the clicker or saying YES to make it more intresting and to see if my dog is paying attention
Wow i like your toy's :D
No your dog is cute

My dog used to play when they were about 1-2 years old but suddenly they have stopped playing. I have tried this as well and it simply didn't work.

That was amazing, thanks so much
This should have more 💘
why is the dog so overweight?
F1-ALAN-F1 it may be pregnant
READ the description!!!
That dog needs less treats
Its not treats. Its dog food, im a trainer and i know you ALWAYS use dog food.

That was easy. I'll try that. Thank you
ohh right sorry didnt see that.. xx
i have a 7 year old doberman. this was working for like a minute until she got annoyed with the clicker an used her snout to knock it out my hand 🤣
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!! that whole time i watched that i couldn't stops saying "naw" hahaha
but that dog kinda needs to go on a diet.... no afence, that not the normal size.
Great video !
i can't get my dog to look at toy... anyone know what should i do? he just looks at my hand with treats and wait for me to give it to him for just sitting....
sorry for my bad english
i have a question, how do you train a DEAF dog? thank you
You don’t really need a clicker, just have fast reactions
There is also the option to use a light flashing up when they did something well.
My dog won’t do this 😫😫 i need help😫😫. She is 2 i adopted her almost a month ago . She don’t like walks , don’t play or take treats 😫😫
where can you get one
My dog just looked at it and do anything.
ThNk you
I ment frisbee on that last one
Bit late to the party but my dog runs away every time I click the clicker. how can I stop this or is there another way.

Great !!! it will help me !
OMG. You monster, look what you did to that poor majestic creature:'(
Anna Santana READ the description!!!
my dog is scared of clickers...
Just say good dog instead. Clickers are a bit of a money scam. They just make you look professional.
Why tf would a dog be interested in a dam cap
Very helpful!
That dog is getting too many treats... can it even move?
MagmaSedusa READ the description!!!
Doesn't work
Plz help.... All she does is look at me Becuz she knows I have treated as tries to look for it .... I thnk I jus need to take the treats out without her knowing
does she have a raider helmate XD
My dog is so so good at it

Is the dog pregnant or is she that fat because of all the treats?
Thanks. I have a 2 year old terrier and I want to teach her how to hold a toy on her head but if she does not even like it it won't be a challenge
Thats awesome

good good goooooddddd
Do you need a clicker?
this dogo had soooo many treats while traning time that he gain 500 kg xD
Uhuh, sure he did
My beagle Herman is so much like that. He isn't very interested in toys as we believe he was abused before we adopted him. Hopefully this works!
I dont think she actully likes it in the dogs mind it says "if I sniff that cup ill get s treat"
@ShantifulAngel Thanks! :)
what if you don't have a clicker
Grab a pickle lid and bang something on it on the inside
Ummm 🧐 this way
i have everything exept a dog, any way i can make it work 😂
How did you get here then? lol
SHE! REALLY....um does this work with a male
my dog still dont like my ball!! can i put the treat on the ball so he would lick it and eat the treat?
