- Mac was adopted from a nearby animal shelter. He is a gentle dog with an old soul personality. I was surprised he had no interest in toys. I suspect he either never had any toys as an adolescent or he may have been punished for mouthing, now avoids.
This video is about Teaching an Adult dog to play while engaging with a human. Watch as he learns he is safe!

Great video. I had a lil yorkie who was rescued from a breeder at 18 months of age. He was afraid of most everything including toys. We put treats under toys which we had scattered around the room. He never really played and was afraid of the squeaker still but at least he learned to tolerate the toys which were all around from other dogs. He is gone now and I miss him terribly.❤️

We have a rescue dog that also shows no interest in balls or tug toys even when rewarded with food, just bought a squeaky tug today so let's see if that helps
Trying this with my small maltese rescue. She was in a puppy mill so prob never socialized. Shes not interested in play or toys but I will not give up. Thank you for giving us hope that is possible to reintroduce play.

Saying Ow! with a high pitch is the best way to teach a dog that their teeth can hurt. In fact it should be the only way.
@@gamerjunction5335 True, that works with an aroused mouthy adolescent dog. Mac here is passive in nature and wouldn’t put his mouth on anything. I was using the high pitched voice to get him excited and motivated to engage with me. Baby talk worked with him!
My Rescue Dog, who vary rarely plays, has just got up to look for the toy you are squeezing. When we first got her I got a squeaky soft toy that she never played with but always would pick it up off the floor, walk backwards with it in her mouth so that she didn't have to turn her back on me, and go and put it in her bed. Then if you picked it up she would follow you as long as you were carrying the toy. She still loves squeaky toys but I just can't get her to actually play with them. If I throw the ball on the beach for her she will run to it, then she will "mark" the spot where it is so that I can go and Fetch it!!!
Well done engaging her, she is having fun as you can see! It may be that she was never taught to play, don't give up trying. It may be that she is afraid or simply does not like the feel of the texture on her tongue. I just uploaded a new video on Toy Preferences you might like!
