Hey all, I just wanted to share my experience teaching my puppy to fetch. I started off following the instructions in this video but was having trouble getting my dog to hold the ball for an extended period of time. He would take the ball, but then kind of throw it aside almost immediately. Eventually he figured out that the important thing was that he pick the ball up in his mouth and would pick up and drop the ball from the floor. After this, I just started rolling the ball to him and rewarding him for picking it up. I started to roll the ball a little farther and only rewarded him when he brought the ball most of the way back. It only took 1 session of this before he totally got the idea. Were sitting here playing fetch as I type this. So if you're having trouble moving you're dog past the first step, you might want to try jumping straight to retrieval.
Thanks a lot. On my way to teach my imaginary dog. I have no idea why i googled and see this video and comments. But your comment is definitely helpful.
I came here to ask this exact question. I'm playing with a rope because she is more eager to actually grab that, but she drops it on the floor immediately for the reward. As soon as I try to stop giving rewards when she drops it immediately because I want her to hold it longer, she'll look at me like "why don't I get the treat this time" and right after will be less inclined to do it again. Hopefully throwing the rope on the floor will work!
This is genuinely the best fetch video I've ever seen. I've always been a natural at training my dogs to fetch, but I haven't owned a dog in so many years and I'm getting a new puppy soon that I wanted to brush up on my knowledge. Every video I stumbled upon didn't seem to really explain it in the way it made sense. This is the best video explanation on how to teach a dog to fetch it. I saw Zak's video which puts soooooo much emphasis on making the toy 'interesting' and it's just too high energy and fake, and unnecessary. Sure you could teach a dog like that, but it is just unnecessary. It's putting it down into these single components, and then gradually putting them together that makes it work. It doesn't have to be 'interesting', it just has to be rewarded and positive, for each little step. The dog starts to understand very quickly too (and will naturally begin to enjoy it), rather than having to jump through hoops for your dog to think some toy is interesting, and to think you are 'interesting', and to make everything so over the top. Dogs have these skills inside them, it's just a matter of 'setting them up for success' and bringing these skills out in the right way. This is the best video for that.
Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.
Try using a lower reward food. Play a game of chase on the floor with the toy to make the toy 'high value' and praise for any time he has it in his mouth, then use relatively bland but still interesting food. For example, pieces of kibble, pieces of milkbone, dry pieces of banana. You can also bake your own treats made from oat, banana, and peanut butter and cut them into tiny pieces.
They are all different aged and sized dog. Bob, Perry, Mike, & Chuck. Bob knows how to hold. Perry holds and gives. Mike knows how to stay, hold, and give. The oldest dog in the video chuck knows how to fetch.
Been trying to train our toy poodle to fetch and finally found this video that breaks it down to small steps. She now fetches very well at home - though not outside.
I taught my 4-month-old GSD how to play fetch in just a few sessions because of this video. She's not great at all the things I train her to do, but she LOVES to play fetch. No way we could have found one of her favorite pastimes without you. Thank you!!!
It worked after 2 sessions. My Cocker Spaniel pup used to run away with the toy, but breaking down the task into small components quickly helped to reach the desirable effect. Thanks a lot!

I really like this video because, even though I like other trainers on here like Zach George, Caesar Millan and Victoria Stillwell, they never break down anything and this gives you a step-by-step, very simple to understand process.
Thanks! This was easy to understand, broken down very clearly, and reminded me to be patient moving on. Now to get a good treat training pouch and a clicker!
Put your hand underneath their jaw and hold it for them. Start with only a few seconds and increase as they get more comfortable. Eventually they’ll get the idea.
Great video! I appreciate the easy break down into small steps - makes the instructions clear and it's easy to understand exactly what I should be looking for my dog to be doing. Thanks!
I have been trying to teach my Boxer to fetch for 4 years and had no luck, I finally come across your video and am finding your simple break down step by step instructions so easy and my Boxer is finally understanding what I want him to do. I found my dog driving down a isolated country road. A group of kids were doing something to a animal with sticks. I could see fur and stopped my car thinking it was a rabbit they were hurting. It was a 2 to 3 week old puppy. I had to restrain myself from doing something crazy and just scared those kids hopefully enough to stop them from ever doing it again. It was 2005 and I had just turned 20yo. I have always loved all animals and most people thought I would become a vet due to the way I just had a knack with all animals. I named my new little pup Roxy, a beautiful little border collie and lab mix. I had just moved out from home as my friend and me rented a old farm house on a acre of yard surrounded by farm and only 1 other house on our mile stretch of road. I had never had my own dog before, but my fascination and love of all animals, finding Roxy was one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me. On my way home with her, I stopped at a small store and bought her a couple cans of wet food. When I set her down in my yard, it took everything she had to stand up and walk. I set a little plate with wet food by her and she could find it. I thought she might be blind and those kids had hurt her more severely then I originally thought. Just as I was ready to run her to a 24hr vet she found the plate. I put less then a quarter of the can on the plate and it was still bigger than her. She could stand up on my hand, that's how small she was. She didn't start eating instead she kept squishing her face into the small pile of food on a paper plate 3 times her size. I was confused for a minute and then realized what was happening. A small amount of liquid pooled by her feet and she tried to drink it by puckering her mouth like she was nursing. I didn't have much money, but remembered a family friend who bred boxers. I tracked her down and she came to my house. She said Roxy was at the oldest 3 weeks and it looked like she had just opened her eye the day before. She helped me make a list of things I needed, newborn bottle, formula and many tips on raising her. It was 2005 no youtube. But our bond was so strong training just came natural. I love watching these videos. It validates that I was doing something right. Roxy passed away in 2020. It left a huge hole in my heart. I miss her everyday. I've just started think about funding another dog. I'm not ready yet. But when I am, this video and others like it, give me confidence in training another. Thank you for the great video....sorry for the long comment. I haven't been able to talk or write about her without starting to cry. It felt good to write this out. I know realize the tears aren't just sadness, but also happiness too. She was such a special girl and truly my best friend. I'm not a religious man but the light she brought into my life felt truly like divine intervention.
Dude, you rock! This kind of step-by-step teaching style is absolutely incredible. Some seemingly simple videos elsewhere don’t actually start from square one, and the way you break it down is perfect. Thank you!
thanks so much for the concise, easy to follow videos. I have a 1-yr-old Borador who I can get to "take it" with pretty much any object only for him to immediately drop it out of his mouth. He won't hold it longer than a split second in anticipation of a treat coming. Watching you, I see that I need to try to increase the length of time he holds it by tiny increments, getting him to wait just a little bit longer for his treat. A very subtle thing, but likely the difference between him successfully learning this or not. I'll give it a try!
You need to teach "drop it". In the house, hand him a toy he likes. Then put a treat right in front of his nose while saying 'drop it.' Hopefully he will drop the item to get the treat. Repeat until he learns what it means.
Thank you! I (re)socialise "problem dogs", Soon I get a young sheperd only for training purposes. Much of the content of your videos I use also in rehabilitation, and it's very helpful! All of my English speaking clients I recommend your chanel, because it's one of the best far around!
I'm stuck on take. Be will bite it then let go immediately. He won't hold it. Then I try not rewarding till he gets it right then he just lays down. 2 days in a row stuck. Very frustrating
I'm in the exact same situation. Tried various objects of size and material. Balls he drops immediately. Rope toys he takes to the ground to play with.
Having the same issue... I just trained the dog that she will get food for putting the object in her mouth, she has to drop the object to eat her treat... It seems like it will be impossible to train her to hold it now.
Nicholas Simpson I think you guys will eventually get it if you stay consistent!! The part where your dog bites is already great progress. Start clicking and rewarding him just for touching the toy. Once he catches on increase the duration. It will take awhile trust me my dog did the same at first too.
Yeah I'd recommend just being patient and rewarding for tiny bits of progression before giving the dog a chance to drop it or start playing with the toy. Dogs get frustrated easily so start with a couple seconds and increase the time second at a time. You'll get there, good luck.
AnotherMakeupWorld if your dog looks unmotivated there could be a lot of reasons for it. Try to keep the training sessions short and positive with lots of praise. Mix it up and teach your dog some other tricks also to get her excited about working with you. You can also try using a different food reward that your dog really likes.
Maybe imo 7 months is still young maybe you should wait awhile and work your realtionship between your dog. My dogs were like that too when they're young
I have watched your video of an awesome heel command with your gsd long back Now just watched video found great help Subscribed to your channel ❤️ From Pakistan.
HEY you're back! My dog bows how to roll over because of your videos haha. I always refer new dog owners to your videos. Glad to see you're still making them.
Thank you for your videos. They are helping me with a rescue dog I just adopted who I need to do some training with like come, stay as her previous owner didn't teach her.
For my puppy, I would walk away and crouch down, squeaking her toy, calling her over and she'd run to me, grabbing her toy and running back to her bed/special place. No training beforehand- she just knew how to do it! Smart pup. Kind of the opposite of fetch but it's somewhere, now I just have to train her to actually fetch. Thanks for this video!
I love you and your pups. Solea is incredible and has been instrumental in teaching my pups, although they'll never be as accomplished. I know she's getting older but please continue to showcase her as much as possible. She's incredible and I would love a new video much more frequently when you have time. You are the true dog whisperer!!!
Get a bag of treats and get a ziplock bag pour about 10-20 treats you don’t need to count then put the ball in close the ziplock and shake it for about 1-2 minutes then let your pup pick it up and then get it from them then you wanna throw it! My two pups loved this and it was a great idea! Try it yourself!
I think Solea already knows a ton of this, so maybe he just wants to train his new pup & make basic videos where Solea can't really help, but she seems fine :)
Elinore Koenigsfeld you should be able to do all of this sitting in a chair. I chose to kneel because it was easier to demonstrate for the camera this way. You could also consider having the dog on an elevated surface like a large steady table. Just be sure that the dog is comfortable and secure. Good luck!
Thanks for this, videos for teaching cats to fetch weren't all that instructional (or used a clicker). The big problem I currently have is that there aren't many toys my cat carries in his mouth for long periods of time. Generally for cats, carrying the toy AWAY from you is like saying "I'm done with this". Hopefully, this method will work.
Appreciate the video. My only comment that I would like to see, is the difference between how this looks when you show us the steps on a dog that is not already trained. Thanks.

Training starts @ 2:21. You're welcome 😊
Dude, you rock! This kind of step-by-step teaching style is absolutely incredible. Some seemingly simple videos elsewhere don’t actually start from square one, and the way you break it down is perfect. Thank you!
Zathena will now take an object but she then immediately drops it to get the treat any tips for longer duration of holding?
thanks so much for the concise, easy to follow videos. I'll give it a try!
also... is there a particular reason you drop the treat on the floor rather than him taking it from your hand?
Excellent! Concise and well structured. Thank you.
My dog when we played fetch he would take the ball and chew it up he sadly passed away in 2018 and I'm thinking of getting a new dog and teaching more
Thanx for the info. I’ve never been successful with this and now I know why.
My dog never let's go unless I give him a treat 😂 😂 😂
Very helpful technique! Thank you!
I dont know... my dog knows fetchs but when i throw the ball he comes back to me but dont give it to me..
Cooper The German Dog same she just runs after
Same
You need to teach "drop it". In the house, hand him a toy he likes. Then put a treat right in front of his nose while saying 'drop it.' Hopefully he will drop the item to get the treat. Repeat until he learns what it means.
You will need a month
Lol 😂 my dog claims full ownership of the ball and just runs away with it....but I’m gonna try this method!

This was a great model of a TA for teaching fetch! Thank you!
I have a Belgium Shepherd, she is 7 months old. She is bored to play fetch, even if she likes biting her toys or to be rewarded. What can I do?
AnotherMakeupWorld if your dog looks unmotivated there could be a lot of reasons for it. Try to keep the training sessions short and positive with lots of praise. Mix it up and teach your dog some other tricks also to get her excited about working with you. You can also try using a different food reward that your dog really likes.
Maybe imo 7 months is still young maybe you should wait awhile and work your realtionship between your dog. My dogs were like that too when they're young
I have watched your video of an awesome heel command with your gsd long back
Now just watched video found great help

HEY you're back! My dog bows how to roll over because of your videos haha. I always refer new dog owners to your videos. Glad to see you're still making them.
He looks like the meme guy that goes "nice"
Thanks for sharing this educational video for dogs🎉🎉🎉🎉
That puppy is adorable 😍
Thank you for your videos. They are helping me with a rescue dog I just adopted who I need to do some training with like come, stay as her previous owner didn't teach her.
Thank you for much help Watching this Puppy how to step Learn😊
Thnx..............Very helpful video
Followed these steps and my puppy has learnt fetch in 4 days. Thanks 👍🎉
My puppy was not following my orders, she is going straight for the food and tearing my pockets for food. She was biting me too
lol xD
Hahahaha
That's funny
Everyone's dog :Yes siiiiiir
My dog: What ya want i am playing get tf outa here
He makes it look so easy lol and I love how we saw the dog grow 😭🤍
My dog is just interested in the treats, he’ll mouth it and when I give him the treat he’ll stop mouthing it and look for treats
I loved how you taught me how to train my puppy, thank you 😊, from Melbourne, Australia
Yes I’ll teach this to my imaginary dog
I like how you talk to that adorable little puppy
My puppy always comes and licks my hand, pretty much ignoring the toy.............
Yay! Sooo happy you are back! You are my favorite of all dog training youtubers, by far!
I love you and your pups. Solea is incredible and has been instrumental in teaching my pups, although they'll never be as accomplished. I know she's getting older but please continue to showcase her as much as possible. She's incredible and I would love a new video much more frequently when you have time. You are the true dog whisperer!!!
My new dog is lazy it looks at the ball and walks off
Get a bag of treats and get a ziplock bag pour about 10-20 treats you don’t need to count then put the ball in close the ziplock and shake it for about 1-2 minutes then let your pup pick it up and then get it from them then you wanna throw it! My two pups loved this and it was a great idea! Try it yourself!
One question tho - what happened to the German shepherd??
Check out his instagram "tab289". Solea seems doing pretty well. :)
I think Solea already knows a ton of this, so maybe he just wants to train his new pup & make basic videos where Solea can't really help, but she seems fine :)
caos h
I wondered that too.

Great video, keep up the hard work!
You are simply awesome. The most reliable explanation I could ever find in whole UA-cam. Thanks a lot.
You are one of the best content video makers on tutorial video for dog training, in UA-cam
I am so happy to suscribe to you channel
This helped a lot! ( They get the ball and bring it back but sometimes they don't bother. ) Thank you!
Thanks! (But what if you're 71 years old and can't put weight on your knees? ;-) ) I'll find a way. Well done.
Elinore Koenigsfeld you should be able to do all of this sitting in a chair. I chose to kneel because it was easier to demonstrate for the camera this way. You could also consider having the dog on an elevated surface like a large steady table. Just be sure that the dog is comfortable and secure. Good luck!
0:28….I like playing “Fetch your Life back”😂😂😂😂
Thanks for this, videos for teaching cats to fetch weren't all that instructional (or used a clicker). The big problem I currently have is that there aren't many toys my cat carries in his mouth for long periods of time. Generally for cats, carrying the toy AWAY from you is like saying "I'm done with this". Hopefully, this method will work.
wtf is this dog ! he is very clever
Bitar's UA-cam It's a labrador
It's a labrador retriever. Yes that's its specific breed. They are bred for retrieving.
Congratulations on new golden retriever 🐶🐶🐕🐕
My dog is motivated by food..
Thanks man! Now our dog does the groceries!
How nicely you have explained everything :) Thanks.
Thank you, I showed this to my dog and he immediately learned it
Genius!
Appreciate the video. My only comment that I would like to see, is the difference between how this looks when you show us the steps on a dog that is not already trained. Thanks.
How to Train a Dog Attack
Mahmoud Elpop Thank you. Finally one with common sense!
Kristin Poltermann 😂😂
Very well explained thanks
Is this taught all in one day or over the course of a few days?
Thanks so much for this video, it will be really helpful with our rescue Lab
Thank you! I will try teaching my 4 months old pug now!
He's a beautiful doggy 😍🥰
Excellent...thank you for posting
