    Great video on teaching a dog who's never played fetch and isn't really toy motivated. I have a 5 year old terrier mix I adopted a year ago and I really want to teach her fetch. This video helped me understand the teaching process without being too complicated. Thanks a lot!

    Thank so much for this instructional video! I was having the hardest time for months trying to get him to come back to me with a long line. Your tip of jogging backwards was what really did the trick for me. Within 10 minutes my dog was getting the hang of it and was having the time of his life when i praised him each time he came back! Thank so much!
    I'm going to keep at with the long line for a few weeks to see how it goes.
    I had one question, how long do you suggest each training session be?
    We just got done with our first one and it was about 15 minutes long and he was pretty tired at the end.
    Thank you again for this great video!

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  7 років тому +6

      Then you have a serious attitude problem with him and need to address that first. He could just be testing you and almost playfully, dogs do that a lot with growling. Teach him a strong drop it with food and if he actually reacts towards you then you have something completely different to work on first before allowing him to have toys.

      Until I learned that if I have the exact same ball in my hand or bone in my hand when he gets back from fetching ..he sees it and drops the original one and allows me to throw the one in my hand ... and then the process keeps repeating itself so I can have a good time playing fetch

    My 11.5month old staffy x fetches and drops the ball sometimes but others she either doesn't fetch and/or drop. Worse still, if other dogs are playing ball, she will steal their ball and not drop - she sees it as part of play because she knows that they will chase her. Sometimes if no dogs chase her she'll lie down and start tearing the ball apart; if we approach her to take it (even offering treats) she will get up with the ball and move away. I've not tried using long lead to train esp with other dogs around as she tends to get tangled in it and then get frustrated and angry but I will try that at home and at the field.

    My 9 month old malinois when I start to reel her in she will just let go of the toy even after I run back and have her run toward me and tips??

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  9 років тому +1

      Jason Rodriguez I wouldn't worry about that too much in the beginning (it's really normal) But there are things you can do to speed up him understanding the concept. If you are using treats to teach 'drop it' simultaneously, find another method just when you are throwing the ball vs. tugging and teaching drop it. For now, when your dog gets to you, praise her (Good) then go back to the toy and point to it, if she doesn't pick it up wiggle it on the ground until she gets so excited she grabs it (if you are too animated she'll want to bite and chase you so find a balance with wiggling just the toy not your body) When she grabs it take a few steps back to get her to bring it to you and then get it and throw it and repeat. If you are still having trouble try bait and switch with two identical toys she loves. Throw one and when she gets it call her while showing her the other toy and act like your about to throw it in the other direction. She'll drop it like normal and come running towards you and when she does throw it and she'll chase it. While that is happening pick up the first toy and repeat. It helps her get in the habit of picking it up and running to you, picking something up and running to you. After several days of that go out there and repeat except don't show her the second toy right away, keep it hidden. She will likely turn and just run back to you excited for the next throw while still holding it. Now this could take a few times or a few weeks before you can effectively go to the next step...just depends on your dogs attention span. I would also make the distance shorter. If you are using 20 feet do 10 feet or even 5 feet. Bottom line there are always options :-) Let me know if you are still struggling in a few weeks or if all goes well.

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  Рік тому

      shorter distance throws, more confidence building (if she's nervous) and squeaker toy. Normally I'm not a fan...dogs are attracted to it because it sounds like a dying animal, but if a dog needs to build drive, it can be useful short term or long term.

    I can't get my dog to bring it back even on a long line and moving backwards and being as animated as I can. If he comes back, with or without the line, he drops the toy then runs to me. He won't being me the toy. Many times he lays down with it and when he feels the leash he right away drops the toy before running back. I think chewing on it is more rewarding to him then playing tug (he is a huge tug loving dog) so maybe that is why? We are struggling with this because not only do I want to be able to use toys as a reward during training (since he loves toys more then food) and that is a proper retrieval is a must before toy rewards can be used but I cannot start to teach him the task of picking up items and bring them to me (since he is a service dog in training and that is a much needed task) without this basic step of proper retrieve. I know you said if he drops it, it's ok, but he does it every time. In the house, off a leash, he jumps on the couches rather then back to me and if on a leash he doesn't seem to want to play or if I can get him to play, the min he feels the leash, just like outside, he drops the toy. Maybe I just need to be more patient? I have done this sitting on the floor and throwing it like a foot or 2. I have tried many different ways and he has brought it to me just a few times out of it all.

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  7 років тому

      have you tried holding a squeaky toy? Maybe when he picks up his toy he hears you squeak another and rushes back With the other toy? worth a shot... depending on how old your dog is you can also teach him to hold toys in his mouth and release on command...that will help to.

      Ruff Beginnings Rehab Dog Training and Rescue He knows "take it" but he backs up and drops it and wont hold it (so we have a few missing steps to this task) but I have not tried another sqeeky toy. i will try that. i want to teach proper retrival in a fun not at all forced way like what these bird dog trainers are teaching as forced retrieve. i dont even think i can do force hold either though i think i may try to capture it with the handle of a basket or hold it there with my hand for a min and try to capture that way. just the idea of forced retrieve makes me shutter as when watching the videos on how to makes me so sad of the state in which the dog is in. i will try the sqeeky toy thing. Thank you for the help!

    • @kelvin6931
      @kelvin6931 4 роки тому

      hijipikin try running away from him when he is running back with the toy, this could initiate the chase drive and he will probably follow you. Make sure too reward with treats every time he brings it too you. Good luck still working on my pup too but this has helped me a lot.

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  4 роки тому

      the other advice was solid. treats may make him disinterested in the toy. You can try another toy, but that can do the same thing. We like to teach a target like place command for the dog to bring it back to, but honestly, I'd cut your distance shorter...even 6-10 feet and lots of excited recalls and moving back or targeting. Also work on TUG! that is a great way to build some drive first then work on drop it and then fetch

    • @RuffBeginningsRehab
      @RuffBeginningsRehab  7 років тому

      It depends on the dog and the time you put into it...daily/weekly/5 minutes/30/etc.! Took this guy a couple of months because he was on the older side. But he was also ecollar trained to be off leash and have a great recall (come command) in combination with this training so two months and he was in good shape. It all just depends. You have a lab so your focus will probably just be also focusing on a great recall and a drop it command. Then you will be good!

      He may not care for the ball, try to encouraging some tugging with different toys. Squeaky stuff can also help. And work at really short distances in low distraction areas. It can be just a few feet in front of you to start.
