      How do you tell the difference between a male and female Buenos Aires Tetra? I am looking to breed mine, but I just can't seem to find the difference between them.

  • @Teddzworth
    @Teddzworth Рік тому +10

    Personal experience: Got six for a 55 before i knew they were plant eaters.. they chew on my amazon swords a bit. Which at first was a little heartbreaking. But their activity is absolutely incredible and outweighs the plant nibbles.. 6 buenos aires, 4 skirt tetras (would be more however i had to remove a few of the longfin variety) and an EBA. . They keep the skirts moving and sometimes the skirts will "school" with them when they swim in a group,
    the aggression is obviously there in their nature only amongst themselves but i believe i have 4 females and 2 males and that perhaps may also be why they seem to get along pretty well, they appear to be playing more than true aggression towards each other. Adding them into the tank appears to have helped encourage everyone to be more active.
    They have not eaten my anubias, bacopa, pogostemon, and valisneria.
    They nibbled on each to check it out. But i suppose theyve opted for amazon swords as preferred plant of choice. Which im ok with growing more/buying some more if that time comes.
    chainswords stand 0 chance and dwarf sag doesnt really, unless its fully established and filling up a tank, then theyll appear to keep it "trimmed" at the very least.
    Thank you for highlighting this fish!

    Jason,
    Everything you said was dead on these fish are relentless on plants. I had them in my 55 gal planted aquarium and they destroyed my plants. I moved them out and into my 90 gal Central American Cichlid tank and wow what a difference. I had a school of 12 but you are right they kill the weakest tetra and it’s crazy how aggressive they are to each other. They are a good dither fish for big fish. And do need a lot of room I think there pretty but definitely not for planted tanks and a 4 ft aquarium or larger. They don’t mess with the bigger cichlids and the other cichlids don’t mind them either.

    These fish are tough. I have driftwood I collected from the Sierra Nevada mountains, and one had a little piece sticking out maybe the diameter of 2-3 toothpicks. They spawn a few times a week in the morning and one was punctured through the belly by the piece of wood. Looked a little rough for a few days, and then bounced back like it never happened. They're also a pain during feedings, as they will outcompete most tank mates for food. Like little piranhas. I have mine in with Serpae tetras, Geophagus pyrocephalus, and a festivum.

  • @Big_Jims_American_Dream
    @Big_Jims_American_Dream 10 місяців тому +4

    I added 3 of these guys to my tank with 12 Serpae tetras and a few roseline sharks. The Buenos Aires harassed everyone else nonstop for days before finally chilling out. Everyone in the tank gets along now that the pecking order has been established, but the Buenos Aires are the only ones allowed to swim to the top at feeding time.. everyone else has to let the food drop. Interesting to watch.

    Are those Archer fish up on the top? Impressive! I currently have 3 remaining BAt's with 3 remaining black skirts and a large angelfish in a 55 gallon tank. No issues but these are all quite old fish and have been together for at least 4 years (angel is even older). Originally, I had 6 BAt's and 5 black skirts. BAt's are great fish but I would think a 55 gal would be the minimum size for a small shoal of these fish.

    Great video and info as always but i have a 75 gallon Stocking question...
    I currently have a 75-gallon aquarium with 7 huge congo tetras. My stocking ideas were to have 1 good-sized piece of driftwood and a ton of live plants. For fish, I was thinking 3 angels (possibly different colors) 2 electric blue acaras, 1 apisto (probably one of the red kinds so no aggressive behavior from the acaras), 1 corbensis (is that a good idea?), and possibly down the road some cory cats or a bristle nose pleco.
    Is this a good stocking list? What would you change up? I'm open to suggestions. (And I want the ton of plants because boy I get an earful about the water bill 😂)

    • @TenorCantusFirmus
      @TenorCantusFirmus Рік тому +1

      The Acaras would be ready to sl*ughter all other fish on the list... Expecially in a not-so-large tank like a 75 gl.s .
      As a general rule, one pair or "harem" (one male plus two or more females) of Cichlids per tank should be enough, choose between Angels, Apistos or Kribensis (did you mean that for "Corbensis"?...) and monitor the situation - I have Congos too, and given how shy and skittish they are, I'd be cautious when having Cichlids around.
      The Bristlenose is a fantastic "cleaner" - Mine is keeping algae at bay very well, and so far he has done well just on them plus half Spirulina tab per Week and the Ketapang leaves. I'd go for it instead of the Corys, which given Apistos and Kribensis tend to also dwell on the bottom might be in for being on the receiving end of aggression.

    • @carlwagers9829
      @carlwagers9829 Рік тому

      @TenorCantusFirmus ya know I've actually found the congo tetras I have, which are full grown, tend to be the boss of the tank, so I thought that they would make a great dither fish. I was thinking that the angels I could do different colors and get them all as juveniles for them to grow up as the centerpiece of the tank. Next, the eltric blue acaras I was thinking 2 would be good, and I've seen that they do great in pairs, especially with angels and tetras. And I was just skeptical if a corbensis would work with an apisto. If not, what other fish would you choose in that setup?

    • @TenorCantusFirmus
      @TenorCantusFirmus Рік тому +1

      @@carlwagers9829 I repeat, I'd stay with just one pair of Cichlids... Congos as "dithers" are ok, but with Cichlids carefulness is always a must.

    I had an extra 10 gallon tank and a friend of a friend had a fish that needed rescuing (all other tank mates had died due to improper care because of medical issues). I was told it was a tetra so I figured the 10 would be alright for a bit until I could get a larger (20 gallon) tank set up and then get some more tetras so I would have a school. When the fish was brought to me I then learned this is not the tiny rainbow tetra I thought but a Buenos Aires tetra… so I guess I’m just asking what my best course of action is… I don’t have room for a big tank (larger then 20 gallons) but I can’t send the fish back because he would very likely die.. any advice?

No salt, though. Just tropicals. Huge selection of fish... used equipment...I've not had any issues with any of the fish I've bought there.
