Stevie was just warming up at this time in his career. One of the top ten artist of all time.
#1 for me
#1 for sure
I agree, n by the time the 70s rolled around he took flight. All his albums during that era are golden. He's 17 here n said he's planning on majoring in 'Loveology' lol He has always had a great sense of humor...
Stevie Wonder has so many hits, I lost track...🎵🎵🔥🔥
The man has 25 Grammys...🏆🏆
Ten? Sir, you fallaciously assume there are at least 9 others worthy to stand in his shadow?
I almost cried when Stevie Wonder said he only writes melodies and isn't good at lyrics. He was the greatest wordsmith ever
back then Sylbia Moy and Hank Cosby were writing lyrics while he did the music...most of his 60s compositions were co-written
Pretty wild, huh? If he wasn't good at writing lyrics then, he surely became the ultimate master, right? :-)
He is still alive, you know...
Absolutely
Was ?? Still is the master of music. His soul is blessed with mastery
Stevie Wonder and Prince two of the most talented musicians of my lifetime.🎶
Two of the most talented musicians in lifetime!!!
Wow he was 17 no computers no social media platforms no sycophants around him just TALENT.🤗🤗🤗🤗
Hard to believe he was only 17 here. Genius! Happy birthday Stevie!
17 year-old Stevie sharp like a No.2 pencil!!!
CRAYONS ARE NOT SHARP. LOL.
@@91dodgespiritrt lol
@@91dodgespiritrt ....Dave said a #2 pencil not crayon! LOL
... Truly touched by the Almighty with talent !
One of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs & to think he only 17 is amazing! Whitney also did a nice rendition of this!
Stevie in ANY decade gives me the chillz. This man was talented at conception.
This live version is awesome and untouchable! Nuff said!
I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. It was nice to hear a different version from that of the studio that was just as good.
No one can play the harmonica like Stevie
17 years young! Wow! I just saw another clip when he was 16! He’s just always been a genius!
We don't get true artistry like this anymore....
Jesus! The bass.. the drums.. the trumpet.. the nostalgic storyline.. the performance.. this is just about the perfect song! Man oh man.
Fact
It is great... but keep in mind this isn't even Jamerson's playing nor his bassline. The recorded version, with Jamerson on bass, is the perfect version of this song.
Thanks for the great video...👍👍
Stevie Wonder ....🎵🎵🎵
The recorded version of this song is great. But live, Steve takes it to an even higher level. Just utterly blown away by this performance. There is like a source of light and energy that came out of this person when he let the music take over his body and opened his mouth to sing.
Amazing
What a genius.
Wow.. I've never heard this song before, but now I can't stop playing it! When he sings, he's really feelin it - he almost wants to jump out of his skin. Hearing and watching Stevie Wonder is one of the single greatest pleasures of my life.😢 😁
I heard this song for the first time days ago at a Walgreens and fell inlove with it, i also can't stop listening to it.
I am over sixty. Have heard this tune many many times over the years. Am still listening to it. It really is a beautiful tune!
Huh ? Where have you been ???But you’re right . It is pure gold
beach boys have a great version too my friend.
@@dudecafe Sister Sledge do too
Wow, what were we doing at 17? This man was just born awesome. So glad he shared his talents.
All singers should hear Stevie was hoarse in the beginning and pushed through it!! Real Legend💯😇🙏🐐
He did sound hoarse but it's still him
Yessssss
This song is so powerful it always makes a sobbing mess out of me. Genius.
It makes me emotional too!!! It's so honest and sincere. I can only listen to it every once in a while. When he says "Build my world all around her" I'M DONE!
Yeah , Yeah, Yeah !!!....
It’s one of those classic American love songs
Stevie is the G.O.A.T. THIIS MAN IS A 🤴🏿 AND PROLIFIC WRITER, SINGER. SO GLAD 2 HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH HIS GUFTS. SO PROUD OF HIS CONTINUE SUCCESS. GO 🤴🏿.
LOOOOVE THIS TALENT HUMAN. HE STAY TRUE 2 HIMSELF AND THE COULTURE.. 🙏🏽🤲🏽💪🏽❤🖤💚💐
I was 7 years old when I first heard this song in the summer of 67 on AM radio and instantly loved it. God it is so motown. Great song by an awesome singer.
Joseph P Liptak, I was born in the summer of 1967!!!
One of the best musicians of all time. His music and voice will always have a special place in my life.
THIS MAN IS A GENIUS!!!! AT 17, HE HAD THE VERNACULAR AND MANNERISMS OF A 40 YEAR OLD (educated) MAN!!
Please say you don't know any 40 years olds. "Please".
I seen Stevie Wonder's first televised appearance. I'm 70 years old now he is the most dynamic Talent that God has given us on this Earth
My all time favorite Stevie Wonder song and I'm a big fan of his music. Yet this one stands above the rest for me!
Same here, my favorite
He was just at the start of one of the most prolific and illustrious singer /songwriters who has ever graced this planet!! He turned 74 yesterday and still going strong!! 💋❤️🥂💐🎊🎉
The band is KICKING!! @ 3:05.. 'bring down a little' - bass player said ' yup Imma run my lines now'...hot damn.
Young genius mind. I smiled the whole interview. Priceless.
If you want to know what soul feels like just look at Stevie. No mirror to practice moves...just all soul! "The Prophet Of Soul" Love this ! Miss this!
His body of work is nothing short of genius
genius, music legend . this guy was born to play. such an amazing man! he cant and should never be copied
STEVIE GETS THE MONEY WHEN PEOPLE SING HIS SONGS. COPY HIM, PAY HIM. STEVIE IS GREAT CAPITALIST ENTREPRENEUR!
HE MADE MILLIONS FOR VEGAS COVERS OF YOU ARE THE SUNCHINE
For me the most gifted soulful singing musician ever to be “ladies and gentlemen I give you Stevie wonder “
And people who have sight, complain about all the things they (think they) Can't do...
U.B. Fishin Even some are posting videos and spreading stories that he can see.
Anyone says Stevie is/was sighted, been snortin' too much pixie dust.
fucking people who have sight
YOU - IN FULL SIGHT AND WITH FULL SIGHT - HAVE BEEN BLINDED BY HIS SO-CALLED "BLINDNESS" FOR YEARS. SAD.
Just a Genius. I've been listening to Stevie since I was a toddler. Older siblings records, etc.
He is a gift from God
Stevie Wonder still have that great smile and sense of humor today! Proof he is down to earth genuinely.
I have seen this video more than 25 times, ... live performance, AMAZING, spontaneous, humble, happy, and most importantly enjoy what he does, ... just 17 years old, just WONDER-ful
Bruh! Stevie is the fkn pinnacle of music. Amazing.
My favorite song by him❤
One thing I know for sure is that I'm going to bawl when he passes away. 😭😭😭😭. I love him so much
Even knowing the reality of this happening I still will never be ready for it. I just know I'm gonna feel a hole inside my chest for quite some time.
i sometimes think about that happening during my lifetime and i get super sad. he’s done soo much for the music industry
BOO HOO...BOO HOO. HA, HA
Don’t say that!! 😧😧
This is So Powerful. One of my FAVORITE ARTISTS OF ALL TIME ❤
This ballad rocks!☺️
I love the fact that Motown really groomed them well. Made sure they still got their education. Thank you Berry Gordy
It was the same with the Jacksons, they had private tutors when touring.
Fun fact Berry Gordy really didn't like child performer's he saw them as too much of a hassle (which they inherently are in some ways) but with Stevie and the J5 he saw something very special in these young boys as well as the enormous potential they had so he took a chance on them and it paid off in the end since Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5 went on to be 2 of Motown's most successful acts.
WHAT YOU ARE REALLY SAYING IS MOTOWN WASHED THEM UP AND TAUGHT THEM HOW TO SPEAK. "THAT'S SOOO RACIST". AFTER THEY WERE CLEAN AND ABLE TO SPEAK CORRECT "ENGLISH", MOTOWN EXPLOITED THE SHIT OUT OF THEM. HA, HA!
@@nappyk96 "FUNNER FACT" STEVIE WONDER WROTE THIS SONG WITH HIS MOTHER AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE. HA, HA!
@@91dodgespiritrt I know your trying to be funny but that doesn't make this comment any less racist.
That horn section gives me the chills. Great orchestra!
Not bragging but I was 16 with transistor radio heard this it moved me like the Beatles did in 63. Never get tired 8f hearing it till day
Great interview, Merv was very appreciative and respectful to black artists.
This has been one of my all time favorite real love songs! "Suzie was in pigtails, I knew I loved her even then"... HOW SWEET IS THAT!!!. Did not know Stevie was called the "Prophet of Soul" but it fits and there is no argument here. Thank you so much for the post, this is and will be a long time classic.
My God. Happy Birthday, Wonder Brother!!!!
Aww Stevie your music is happiness 🥳
That bassist! Obviously Stevie is wonderful, but listen to that bassist go
It was James Jamerson on the record ... not sure if he was also on this live performance.
@@jprg1966 I don't think it's James Jamerson here, but it sounds like he's playing a note-for-note chart of Jamerson's parts. House bands were/are generally amazing esp on TV shows.
The drums are a bit echo-y and I can hear them in the cymbals (would be isolated if recorded, tighter-sounding), and there's a few parts where it deviates from the record. One's around 2:48, but it makes more sense if you listen to the phrase just before that one too. Sounds like a guy having a bit of a laugh and playing it elsewhere on the neck.
No source for this, just my ear.
@@GdThngUrPretty He definitely tried
Didnt Bob Babbit tour with stevie before he was taken into the studio as a recoding Funk Brother.
James Jamerson did the recording , this is note for note identicle.
pure joy
THIS IS AMAZING!!!! I always felt this song was just good. But this live version is so much doper than the original. I have a new found respect for I Was Made To Love Her. And it's now one of my more favorite songs from probably my favorite artist, next to the King of R&B. Thank you for puttin this in my spirit
Stevie Wonder is the best entertainer I have ever had the pleasure to listen to... Stevie started singing at a very young age and still today and he is reaching out to each and everyone of us... His voice gives so much compassion and love to us all... God bless you Stevie...🙏
Stevie you are a gem to this world.
And to think that this humble teenage Stevie would turn out to be one of the best lyricists of all time.
Its a hot afternoon here in the uk and i just saw this and as i played it i was taken back to the very first time i heard it way back in 67 when i was a girl of 11...i was stood on the caravan steps at a site called mablethorpe in lincolnshire at our week long seaside holiday and i think that was the exact moment i felt i had grown up..well a bit anyway..I'd never heard anyone sing like him before as it was all the stones and beatles here and i fell in love with that song and stevie from that minute on.im 65 soon and im sat propped up on my bed in utter pain in my legs from diabetitis but i just blanked it out for those few minutes, as by a bit of alchemy or hypnosis, i was back on the steps as that young girl hearing his soul touching magical song for the very first time in my life.hes still my all time number 1 singer as every single song hes ever sang holds a special place and memory in my heart and soul and will till the day the music stops and im a wisp of air....wonderful mr wonder...luv denise..old,over but not out...just yet..
Wow I've NEVER heard him hoarse! Still great!
Yes; I noticed it too. The top Motown acts were in such demand in 1967 (only the Beatles and Aretha were as big).
I'm sure that Steve stayed on the road at that point, and was probably hitting the high notes of that, and other songs, 2-3 nights a week.
He was no doubt flown in from a concert tour to do this comparatively rare (for then,) and important TV show, and then flown right back out to catch up with the tour. So yeah, the golden pipes were taking a serious beating.
Despite the obvious stress on his voice, he was still smoothly switching up, and improvising on the melody.
Me neither he still sounds good
I was wondering what was going on with his voice. BUT his vocals were still on point.
spoils it a bit
YES HE WAS HERE . STILL SOUNDS GOOD
The hooks in this tune are so plentiful! This tune grabs ya hook, line, sinker….👍🏻 the Fabulous Stevie Wonder
Thank You Lord, For Stevie Wonder In Our Lives. Hey Guys! Check Out His Collaborations With Sting. Amazing!
A sweet genius
His greatness always makes me tear up. Love him so!
Great live version! Little did he know he would dominate the grammies in the 70s.
Even Prince said he could only win a Grammy if Stevie didnt make an album that year!
One of these rare talents that arrive fully formed. He's amazing.
An amazing and stunning musical genius. If we can turn back the clock...!
OMG, so great.
Happy Birthday King Stevie!❤😂
To the 53 Elect, I was made to love you, and I do!❤
Genius and living Legend
There's only ONE.The incomparable ONE....One of our true musical geniuses left in this world....STEVIE WONDER
This live version is so awesome! King Stevie.
If I had to choose my all-time top 10 favorite American songs, this would be in my top 5. What a thrill & rush to watch & hear Stevie Wonder perform like this live at 17. Thank you so much for posting & sharing !
17 years old. 💋
Awesome intense version of this song. Love how the tempo and feeling builds in waves.
well put Shaman. The band backing him is fantastic. There is a complete horn section to the song that doesn't even exist on the original recorded version. In this extended version he has the band to bring it down at around 3 minutes in, just to let the drums and baseline drive the song. Finally, Stevie dips and smiles as he ghosts a note at 3:33, probably just to prove that he is singing live.
This man's talent never fails to give me chills no matter how often I hear his music. It's not fair to call him a genius and afterwards carelessly throw that word around to others nowhere near his level.
Aww Stevie was going through vocal changes due to his age. He did so good! Such a genius.
yo and the band is absolutely killing this shit !!!
That was damn good.
This was the smoothest person ever
Stevie Wonder. Is a awesome and talented artist. In that, he is a musician also. He can play NUMEROUS instruments in spite of being blind. A true under dog and over-comer. Had every reason to give up, but did not. Instead he soared in spite of the obvious obstacles. He is a authenic inspiration and all whiners need to take note. His music has stood the test of time, which alone speaks volumes. Now. This is evening talk show host, Merv Griffin. He was behind a lot of the game shows we have today. Just a lil bit of trivia for the young-uns. 😁
Guy is a phenomena, such a sweet heart, is really touching
I love the album version more. It haz 10 time more feeling and soul in it.
King!
My word that bass line is giving me goosebumps
j'avais 14 ans , pour moi STEVIE est une légende !...
That was awesome all the way around.... the harmonica playing... the passionate delivery... and the interview!!! Thank u Stevie for all the music!!!
Even as a child this song made me cry...its tooo beautiful..my God....we are too amazing.love my people.
God had MAJOR plans for Stevie's life.Steve didn't think he could write lyrics. WOW!
it just doesn't get any better than this. 17 yrs old!!!
His definitely got the Talent.Blessed
one word: timeless
I love this song
One of my ten personal favorites from his enduring career thanks for that classic upload I haven't seen in years
That's classic old school Motown forever
Growing Stevie. No facial hair, voice changing, can’t even hit the high notes anymore but God he’s still amazing.
Watch it Sucka!
The bass was getting after it here. Pretty hip band.
I wonder which song was in the no.one spot.Bet u that doesn't even sound so sweet as this .I was made to love her. Real classic and done classical. Woow!
At 16 - Stevie writes and composes this song.
